Mardi Fuller has hiked all 48 of the New Hampshire White Mountain 4000 footers, twice, once in three season (spring/summer/fall) and once in winter. But being a Black woman raised in New England, it hasn't always been an easy journey to simply get outside and experience her passions. On this episode of the podcast, Mardi shares her experiences as a Black woman in the outdoors. She speaks to the historic invisibilization of Black people in outdoor recreation, breaks down the notion that Black people “just don't do that,” and talks about finding community and getting into hiking. Pull up a chair, pour a glass of wine or tea, and relax as we talk creating your own rules for success and taking big risks. After graduating college with a Business Administration/Computer Information Systems degree, Colleen Miniuk did what she thought was expected of her: she worked as a software engineer for Intel Corporation for almost 10 years. While the cube walls—and the paycheck—were safe, that’s not what she was built for. She walked out of Corporate America on February 28, 2007—a day she considers her Independence Day and celebrates like her birthday. Now as a full-time outdoor photographer, writer, publisher, speaker, and instructor, Colleen spends over 100 days a year hiking, camping in her Alaskan Camper, stand-up paddleboarding, or rowing down a river—an unexpected course for a woman who spent 40 years checking all the boxes for the American Dream and fearing swimming in water where she couldn’t see her feet! Through her photography, writings, and adventures, she hopes to help people, especially women, enjoy the Great Outdoors safely and comfortably. She’s written three guidebooks, including Photographing Acadia National Park: The Essential Guide to When, Where, and How after serving three times as an Artist-in-Residence with Acadia National Park. Over 100 years the bra hasn't changed much. Women spend $25 Billion/ Year on their bras and yet 80% are in the wrong size and are uncomfortable. For women in outdoor sports the struggle to find a bra that supports and is comfortable has been one more place that the gear industry has failed women and made them an after-thought. Catherine Betts, a mom of two small children, who spent her athletic life frustrated and settling with her bras, set out to change the problems women face. With a sewing machine, old sports bras, ace bandages, and saran wrap she made her first prototype. Now the Betts Fit bra is the first of it's kind and with her business partner Danielle Rees they are on a mission to change the way women are supported. Do you remember the first time you were rewarded for winning? Oh didn't it feel so good! You wanted to carry that feeling forever. I know I did. In fact, I love when I win medals in skating, have a successful stage appearance in dance, rock a class 4 rapid, or get a great review on something I wrote. Ooooh the feeling is intoxicating! We feel like we've gotten this big stamp of approval. Yet, when we fail, or even think about doing something we're uncertain if we can win at it, we tighten up, we become afraid, and we stop ourselves. Failure, usually means we want to curl up with a big thing of ice cream, hide under the covers, and binge watch television and sulk. Hey we all need that at times. But what if fearing failure was a learned response you've been carrying around in you, and it was controlled by the five-year-old part of your brain? That's right, the child brain! The problem is that you were punished for failing, and awarded for winning, and no one ever taught you how to fail. To get your daily E2T Morning Ignite make certain to subscribe. Have you ever noticed how much advice you can get in a day? From commercials that tell you what will make your house cleaner, to the people around you helping you with decisions, we get more advice than we even notice. Some of it helps us greatly, while other advice tends to lead us astray. Over Labor Day, I was following some advice, well truthfully, I was actually following someone in a river as we kayaked a rapid I hadn't run. I saw the line I felt I wanted to take, but circumstances caused me to follow someone else. What was right for him, turned into a bad swim for me, and some serious bruising to my leg. I realized that oftentimes, I look to others for advice when I feel uncertainty instead of trusting my own path and that I needed to change this. On this episode, Marci Nault discusses the hero's journey and how struggle may just be where you're supposed to be. If you look at every story ever written, and history in general, for anyone who's accomplished great or new things, they all went through the hero's journey. Truth, no one would go to movies if the hero didn't have to struggle a bit, grow, learn, and become the super being they were always meant to be. So if today, or any day, you're feeling like you're never going to make that goal, or improve, or find the path to happiness, know this. . . you may just be on the hero's journey. Look at what you're learning, how even the hero sometimes wonders if they will be able to get up from the hardest blow, and know that if you keep on going, something somehow will work out. Maybe you're exactly where you're supposed to be. . . learning all that you need to learn. To get your daily E2T Morning Ignite make certain to subscribe. We love our listener's participation. What if we had the power to feel ultimate bliss anytime we wanted? That's right. The ability to simply fall into a state of Nirvana? We think this pure bliss comes from a spiritual awakening, prayer, or in mediation. But what if it came directly from life itself? Think about it. All around us is this intoxication beauty, from tastes, to smells, to the feeling of touch, to what we hear, and the experiences these create. On this episode, Marci Nault discusses how in Italy, she realized, that if she became lost in her surroundings, and in the things that brought her joy, she could experience a state of Nirvana. A pure bliss of present moment. You can read more on Medium. So how do you reach it? Try today's exercise. Today's Exercise: Think about three of your favorite ways to enjoy life. On this episode of E2T Morning Ignite, Marci Nault, discusses how being an introvert is often misunderstood, and how giving into the need to hide away from the world can be a great emotional strength that encourages healing and creativity. Hiding, caves, not wanting to talk about something, for a true introvert — meaning you refuel in the quiet — is a sign that you may just need a little space, a momentary quiet, to listen to your own heart, to steal away in the silence, because when you return you're then able to give even more to those you love. Marci Nault discusses how as book readership has dropped, and device usage has grown, our attention span has shortened to between 3–8 seconds. This causes harm to our relationships since we can no longer listen for long periods of time. It affects learning, because the brain has overstored so much stimuli, and since short term memory can only hold six items at once, we can’t remember what we were doing five seconds ago, never mind long combinations of skills. Worse, it affects our ability to train our minds to commit to longterm goals, which is needed to achieve our dreams. In returning to reading the written word, even for entertainment purposes, we allow our minds to rewire again to learned focus. Getting lost in story allows us to calm our central nervous systems, heighten our awareness to our senses, and allows us to sit for long periods of time focused on one thing. In this episode of E2T Morning Ignite, Marci Nault discusses the missing link that motivational programs and law of attraction teaching leave out. A third level of making your dreams come true and creating lasting confidence, self-love, and change is one that is consistently left out of programs. Yet it's the most important one — the sensual experience. We are human beings having a living experience in bodies. We are not meant to be mental brains walking around, unconscious to everything we are doing, so stuck in our minds that we can’t see what’s in front of us besides a set of rules. The spiritual and motivational practices are head trips first, with the hope that it will affect the physical world around the person. Experiences, the ones that overload our senses, that we are so in the present moment because we are filled with joy, or we are in a state of overwhelm because something hard has happened to us, are the actual game changers. Marci gives a real way to start your journey to understand how to make your dreams come true even if every program you've tried in the past has failed you. On this episode of E2T Morning Ignite, Marci Nault explains how her encounter with a sloth taught her a great lesson, that it’s in the slowing down that we recognize how beautiful life can be. It’s in the moments when we recognize our surroundings and breathe them in, noticing the small details that we honor the gift of this incredible world and life. It’s in the slowing, that we have time to restore, to feel gratitude, and to know that it isn’t the checking off of what we see or experience, but how to be more present in those moments. On this episode of E2T Morning Ignite, Marci Nault, talks about how when we take a situation or ourselves too seriously, we tend to get overwhelmed, feel depressed, or hopeless. The sadness brings us down. When we laugh at the ridiculousness, or embarrassment, it turns a tough situation into — this is just another moment in life — a place where we can learn, grow, and realize that we're never going to achieve perfection. They say that laughter is the best medicine. Marci explains how laughter is what gives us strength to get through a tough day. It’s the place where we connect with our friends deeper, laughing so hard it hurts our stomachs and we’re wiping away tears of joy. Laughter brings about a physical response of happiness and healing where we can let go of what troubles us. It makes us ever present. To get your daily E2T Morning Ignite make certain to subscribe. The difference between the physical reactions to fear and excitement are closely related. With this subtle exercise, Marci Nault, explains how you can change the story in your mind that stops you, to one of fearless excitement. Every new thing we encounter in life causes some form of fear as we walk into the unknown. Our brains are wired to keep us safe. This one exercise, of allowing the brain a few minutes to fully have its story while taking deep breaths, and then changing the story to the exhilaration that comes when a new activity or challenge has been accomplished, creates a subtle shift from fear to excitement. Once excitement is reached, now that same energy created by a faster heart beat and adrenaline gives the extra edge to be better at whatever exciting challenge lies ahead. It's when the fear is fought, listened to as if it was the most powerful voice, that dreams are stopped, excuses are made, and challenges that force growth and happiness are relegated to "someday".To get your daily E2T Morning Ignite make certain to subscribe. Marci Nault talks about how saying the sentence, "Someday I'm going to _____." is the key to never having your dreams come true. By choosing to change your words and actions, your dreams become actualized instead of put off to the regret of them never coming true. The truth, you do have a magic wand, and I’m going to share it with you. Name your dreams. Write them down. Make a plan for when they will happen. On this episode of E2T Adventures, Marci Nault talks about the stories our brains tell us to keep us safe versus the facts of the true story. Oftentimes when we want to approach a big dream or to even speak up to our boss about a raise, our brain's tell us a story of all the bad that can happen. Further, we continually retell the stories of defeat from our lives, keeping us as victims. Marci tackles this topic of how we need to stop listening to the 'fake news' our brains create and focus on the facts of what we want to accomplish. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/marci-nault0/message
Marci Nault talks about how to overfill your beauty quotient for more daily happiness and self-confidence. Beauty is an integral part of our experience as humans. It goes beyond what an Instagram filter can create or what the latest trends may be that a “beauty industry” has created. When we change our definition of beauty from the external image, to how beauty in the world and on earth makes us feel, then beauty becomes more than skin deep. It becomes life’s way of wanting to show us how magnificent this earth and living actually can be. Marci talks about the natural beauty of smiles, nature, art, love, books, skies, colors, food, or your favorite coffee mug that makes you happy and how infusing your day with this beauty will make you healthier and happier. Beauty is something we should experience with all our senses. This episode contains practical advice and an exercise on how to overfill with beauty. For more information on this important practice you can read more Medium. To get your daily E2T Morning Ignite make certain to subscribe. We love our listener's participation. Have you ever wanted to go after a dream and either felt that you were too young, too old, or had been rejected? Have you ever been knocked down so hard you felt you would never get back up? On this episode of E2T Explore, Experience, Thrive, Marci Nault speaks with Aviva Cantor, a published children's book author, competitive figure skater and the U.S. Figure Skating Adult Skating Committee's youngest Chair. Aviva speaks to what it means to pursue your deepest passions and schedule your dreams as if they were as important as your work meetings. Listeners will learn how to take on your dreams at any age, even if you've fallen down 100 times (and in front of an audience), and how a little silliness can make things so much easier. Bio: Aviva Cantor is the ninth and youngest-ever Chair of the U.S. Figure Skating Adult Skating Committee. This committee oversees the Adult Skating Program, which offers meaningful opportunities for skaters throughout the United States. As a lifelong skater, Aviva’s goal is to continue to guide the committee and the sport in a direction where longevity is a top priority. As a competitor, Aviva particularly enjoys theatrical events where bizarre and flamboyant props are encouraged. Off the ice, Aviva is a self-published children’s book author with professional expertise in fashion e-commerce, branding, marketing, and search engine optimization. If she isn’t skating with unusual objects or writing a catchy tagline, it’s highly likely that Aviva is knitting, cooking, or listening to a true crime podcast.
