In this episode, the FAQ is: “What is air travel like these days, and what is different? Today's Destination is Acadia National Park Today's Mistake- My own car crash in parking garage   Travel Advice:  Travel pillows FOR SLEEPING on planes   FAQ: “What is air travel like these days, and what is different?   AARP is offering some airline travel tips that may answer this question. First, some facts. In 2019, the FAA reported 146 cases of bad behavior on planes, but in 2021, that number grew to more than 1,000. That was out of nearly 6,000 cases of unruly passengers.  Airplane etiquette is more important because we are all hyper-aware of those around us. Some people get to the airport these days, forgetting basic kindness. The first rule of respectful travel is to accept the rules: Observe mask mandates, boarding processes, and carry-on restrictions. Beyond that, there are steps you can take to make travel a little more pleasant for everyone and avoid conflict. Here are five tips: Don't hog the overhead bins Greet your flight attendant Prepare yourself ahead of time. Don't escalate a conflict. Don't bring stinky food on board. Source: https://www.aarp.org/travel/travel-tips/transportation/info-2022/flying-etiquette.html?intcmp=DC-TRV-MAIN-BB Destination: Acadia National Park, Maine Woodland Rocky beaches and Granite Peaks mark Acadia. It's a good destination for a Solo Traveler or with a friend. ALL seasons have something to offer. At 4 million visits a year, it's one of the top 10 most-visited national parks in the United States. Visitors can explore 27 miles of historic motor roads, hike 158 miles of trails, and explore 45 miles of carriage roads. A shuttle service runs through the park from late June through late October, so you don't need a car during those times. The weather is temperate due to the ocean climate, and it rains often. You may also see morning fog in the summer.    What is significant about the geography at Acadia National Park?    The highest point on the United States East Coast is Cadillac Mountain. You will find Wildlife such as moose, bears, seabirds, and Wales. You are close to Bar Harbor, where restaurants, shops, and entertainment are popular after your visit. You will like the smell of the salty air as you walk through the national park and along the streets of Bar Harbor. My favorite time of year is the fall, when the Fall colors are magnificent. I had trouble finding a hotel nearby on Columbus Day weekend. I had to drive quite a ways to find a hotel when I didn't make reservations that week.  Bar Harbor, Mount Desert Island's largest community, is a five‐hour drive from Boston and 50 miles from Bangor International Airport. It is the second largest on the eastern seaboard behind Long Island. https://www.visitbarharbor.com/ The springtime is lovely and cool. Do not expect to be in a very hot area this time of year. It is a bit of a drive to get there, but it's worth it. I suggest flying to Boston and driving 5 hours, or about 50 miles from Bangor, Maine. https://www.nps.gov/acad/planyourvisit/faqs.htm https://acadiamagic.com/   https://www.nps.gov/acad/index.htm   https://acadiamagic.com/schoodic/map.htm   Today's Travel Advice-Travel neck pillows reviewed.  Neck pillows are foam,  some with straps around the headrest, to help you sleep on the plane. I did a TWITTER POLL to discover your favorites.  TRTL pillow won.         It has a cushioned foam section that you can adjust to be anywhere around your neck, whether you like to fall asleep forward or to the side. The next favorite is the launch of the Trtl Plus. The new version has adjustable neck support, allowing Goldilocks-style comfort and the fabric wrap is vented with a breathable mesh.  https://www.travelandleisure.com/style/travel-accessories/best-travel-pillows   Connect with Dr Travelbest Website Drmarytravelbest.com Mary Beth on Twitter Dr. Mary Travelbest Twitter  Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Page Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Group Dr. Mary Travelbest Instagram

Join Michael Jaco as he welcomes the legendary Santa Jerry, who reveals the magic, challenges, and deeper meaning of spreading Christmas cheer across North America. From recounting his iconic appearance at the National Christmas Tree lighting during President Trump's last year in office to sharing his decision to steer clear of "naughty" venues—except for a Madonna concert—Santa Jerry delivers a heartfelt and entertaining perspective on this holiday season. Amid soaring demand for his services, Santa Jerry reflects on the renewed sense of joy and unity he's witnessed this year compared to the trying times of 2020. With bookings filling a year in advance and events from photo shoots to exclusive country club appearances, Santa and his Mrs. Claus have become pillars of their community. The conversation dives into uplifting visions for America's future, as the speakers praise former President Trump's leadership and share their belief in a brighter tomorrow. They also explore pressing health concerns, from boosting immunity with LifeWave products like X39 and glutathione to addressing controversial environmental topics like chemtrails. Along the way, they celebrate the untouched beauty of places like Acadia National Park and the healing power of nature. Santa Jerry sprinkles in heartwarming stories of children's innocent wishes and moments of pure magic while emphasizing the importance of kindness, love, and community in these transformative times. Whether traveling the country in his RV or inspiring the next generation of whistleblowers, Santa Jerry brings light wherever he goes.

What used to be called 100-year floods are now annual occurrences. Summer 2023 was the wettest ever in Vermont, with 2 feet of rain falling on the state. One storm submerged the capital of Montpelier. This July saw towns such as Plainfield ripped apart by raging rivers. In Connecticut this month, a storm dropped more than a foot of rain, leading to deadly and destructive flooding.Author Porter Fox says the source of these deluges — as well as heat waves, fires, and floods — is the ocean, where about 90% of global warming is occurring. This is the inexorable consequence of human-caused climate change. The top layer of the ocean has warmed about 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit, which is “large enough to transform marine biodiversity, change ocean chemistry, raise sea levels, and fuel extreme weather,” reports the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.Fox explains the connection between oceans, climate change and extreme weather in his new book, “Category Five: Superstorms and the Warming Oceans That Feed Them.”Fox has a personal connection to the ocean. He grew up on Mount Desert Island in Maine, home to Acadia National Park. His father was a renowned boat builder, and Fox learned the craft of ocean sailing by trial and lots of error. He later attended Middlebury College and wrote about skiing adventures all around the world as an editor of Powder Magazine but has now returned to his first love, the sea. Fox's other books include “The Last Winter” and “Northland.”In “Category Five,” Fox captures the awesome power of the ocean by profiling a legendary storm sailor, a mapmaker and a maker of sailing drones, among others.“The ocean is the mother of all weather. It's like a battery that is getting charged up by this excess heat that we have,” Fox said. This is creating squalls and hurricanes with “metrics that we've never seen before.” These monster storms are “traveling farther while moving slower, thus dumping more water and the ferocity of their winds has more time to wreak havoc as they go,” Fox said.“A full throated ocean gale is absolutely terrifying,” he said. These storms have an “explosive sound and shrieking and raging wind and waves that are so powerful they can toss around a 30,000 pound boat like it's a little toy.”Even landlocked places such as Vermont are experiencing the power of the ocean. “Most of the rain that you see in Vermont comes off of the ocean and evaporation. So we have a hotter climate over the ocean. We have more evaporation. We have more energy being infused into the atmosphere,” Fox said. “So every front, every thunderstorm, every squall, every rainstorm is directly connected to the ocean.”The warming ocean has transformed how and when storms occur. “Hurricane season used to be roughly from June to November,” Fox said. Hurricanes have recently occurred in January and May. "Now there is no off season,” he said. What would it take to fix what is broken? “It's kind of an obvious answer: just a little bit of everything,” Fox said. That includes “changing how we create and consume energy around the world, closing down coal-fired power plants, changing from gas cars to electric cars or hydrogen batteries.”“Without the ocean, we'd be gone by now," Fox said. "That 90% of the heat that it is absorbed (by oceans) would be right up in the atmosphere. Temperatures would be unbearable. Storms would be so much more powerful. And yet the ocean is this buffer.”“There's a lot of checks and balances, and it's perhaps the reason that this little blue ball of a planet has maintained life for so long,” he said.“If we can just be aware of that and kind of nudge some of those balances," Fox said, "you could bring the planet back to the way it was pre-1800s.”

Our podcast title is “How To Write a Book Description That Gets Readers Tingling All Over” and that just sounds naughty, doesn't it? And it is a little naughty because this, my friends, is about selling a book, your book, and that requires being a little bit sexy. Sexy is something I, Carrie, am very very bad at. Let's start by thinking about it this way: A book description is an adverstisement for your book. Writing a bad ad for your book doesn't make you a sucky novelist. It just makes you unskilled at that. And that's okay. You've been learning character development and plotting and novel structure and pacing. It's okay to not know this part of the book world too. Yet. Here are the things you need to know about how to write a book description MAKE IT BETWEEN 150 AND 250 WORDS You want it to not be as long as the book. Or even as long as a novella. Or even as long as this post. Any longer? People apparently stop paying attention. FOCUS ON THE BARE PLOT MINIMUM AND THE HERO/PROTAGONIST Show us how the main character's decision has set them toward the adventure of the book. MAKE IT IN THE THIRD PERSON The third person is when you talk about other people and don't use the “I.” So, Carrie Jones and Shaun Farrar decided to adopt a hamster, little did they know, it was a zombie. Not We adopted a zombie hamster. DO NOT BE CHEESY You don't want to go all fancy-pants on the book description. Stay away from adverbs and adjectives and a zillion clauses. Simple wins. So, don't write: In the adorable town of Bar Harbor, Maine where tourist avidly romp in the summer and locals stoically manage the hard winters beneath the mini mountains and rocky coast, two hard-working podcasters tried to adopt a small rodent. HOOK THEM IN Book hooks happen in the first pages of the story, but they also need to happen in story descriptions. A good way to do this is to show how your hero is unlikely to achieve their goal on their adventure. Absolutely clueless podcasters Carrie Jones and Shaun Farrar decided to adopt a hamster, hopelessly hoping for something easy to love. Little did they know that Hammy the Hamster was a zombie. MAKE YOUR WORD CHOICE COUNT AND WORK FOR THE BOOK If you use one or two words that are emotional and full of power, you can impact the reader and make them want your book. Our book looks like some quirky fantasy, right? We know that from the plot. If it was a mystery, we might use a word like MURDER> Two podcasters. One zombie hamster. And a little Maine town about to host a million tourists. Carrie Jones and Shaun Farrar weren't expecting that the hamster they'd adopted to help their podcast ratings would end up a zombie. Or that it would threaten all the tourists heading in to celebrate Acadia National Park's bicentennial. Now, these clueless podcasters, looking for a way out of their podunk town have a choice: find a way to get people to listen to them and protect both the tourists and Hammy the Hamster or just give up and hunker down with some Doritos (Hammy's favorite) before it's too late. The future of Bar Harbor, Maine—and a million tourists—depend on them. DOG TIP FOR LIFE Hook ‘em and they'll buy your book. In dog world, they'll give you a treat when you hook ‘em. Show them what they need but bring them along, wanting more. PLACE TO SUBMIT These are from Duotrope which has an AMAZING list. In S4Ep9 of the PRP, Adam breaks bread with seasoned long distance runner, eccentric Afghanistan native, passionate women's rights advocate and charismatic socialite extraordinaire Zahra Arabzada, who has been preparing for the Colorado Marathon on Sunday May 5th, 2024. Zahra opens up and provides the PRP listenership with some eye opening insight surrounding what it's like to come from a culture that has a different outlook on running than most of the world. In her home country, running and movement aren't things that are prioritized, encouraged or celebrated, especially if you're a woman. As such, Zahra reflects on what running has come to mean to her over the years and explains how powerful her sense of gratitude towards it has become.   Things get vulnerable when Zahra reflects on the collective strength it has taken to get her to the place she is now. From her amazing parents, who prioritized their children's access to education above all else, to the mass evacuations of her family from Afghanistan in August of 2021, Zahra has not only held on to her identity as a proud Afghan woman, she has embraced it and leveraged it to help spread awareness and raise money for a variety of different women's rights organizations. Her tremendous courage, her unique outlook on life and her ability to embrace her realties while holding on to who she is and what she represents all whilst empowering others through the sport of running is something we can all learn from. Her story, among other things, serves as an important reminder to us all that next time you're down out and about your relationship with running, remember what a blessing it is to have access to this wonderful sport and shift your perspective to realize just how lucky we all are to be part of a society that encourages us to participate in it. Ski masks in race pictures?! Altitude or attitude, who do ya got?? Was Zahra once the Kobe of Afghanistan?! Ice Hockey?! #vibequeen?! Protect those flip flops at all costs!! Acadia National Park?! Officials there say that the fires, once rare, have caused billions of dollars in damage, and the Biden administration has made federal disaster relief available. The fires were driven by strong, dry winds from nearby Hurricane Dora, and were made worse by ongoing drought conditions. The region has grown hotter and drier, and highly flammable invasive grasses have been crowding out native vegetation. Bethany Brookshire, freelance science journalist and author of the book Pests: How Humans Created Animal Villains, joins Ira Flatow to talk about this story and others from this week in science news, including an investigation into unknown genes in our genome, a 390 million year-old moss that might not survive climate change, and a fish that plays hide and seek to get to its prey.    A Tuna's Reel Life Adventures Bluefin tuna is typically sliced into small pieces, its ruby red flesh rolled into sushi. But don't let those tiny sashimi slices fool you. Bluefin tuna are colossal creatures—on average, they're about 500 pounds. The biggest one ever caught was a whopping 1,500 pounds. They can travel thousands of miles at breakneck speeds, and their skin changes color! The fish, once in danger of extinction, have now rebounded due to a combination of scientific advances and possibly as a result of climate change. Ira talks with Karen Pinchin, science journalist and author of the new book, Kings of Their Own Ocean: Tuna, Obsession, and The Future of Our Seas about a tuna nicknamed Amelia who traveled across the world, the fisherman who tagged her, and what their stories can help us better understand about the mighty fish. Read an excerpt of the book here.   Preserving Acadia National Park's Vanishing Birdsong Acadia National Park in Maine is home to more than 300 bird species. Climate change is affecting the range of many of these birds, to the extent that some may not be found in the area in the future. A team of volunteers has made it their mission to record as many bird sounds as possible—while they still can. Laura Sebastianelli is the founder and lead researcher of the Schoodic Notes Bird Sounds of Acadia project. She's helped collect more than 1,200 bird sounds on tape, with the hopes of aiding future researchers. Sebastianelli joins Ira to talk about the project.    World's Richest Lithium Deposit Faces Opposition To Mining Five years ago, professional gem hunters Mary and Gary Freeman stumbled upon the richest known lithium deposit in the world in the woods of western Maine. Lithium is a silvery metal many consider to be key to the transition to a clean energy future, thanks to its role in technology like lithium-ion batteries. The Maine deposit could be a way for the United States to be independent in their lithium sourcing. But there's stiff opposition to digging up the mineral within Maine. Kate Cough, reporter and enterprise editor for The Maine Monitor, reported this story in collaboration with Time Magazine. Cough is a Report For America corps member. She joins Ira to discuss the debate.   To stay updated on all-things-science, sign up for Science Friday's newsletters.
