Prepare to be captivated as Anastasia effortlessly guides the conversation towards deep insights and invaluable guidance to enrich not only your connection with the natural world but also your inner self.Have you ever asked or thought:As a woman, how do I pee and poop in the woods? What are some tips to feel clean and fresh to boost your personal outdoor hygiene? (Hint, Kula Cloth!)How does time in nature lead to the discovery of clarity in life and its abundance? How and where can you find joy? (Think, the unexpected)Anastasia is not only the founder of an outdoor gear company, she's the violist in the heart opening, tear inducing Musical Mountaineers, shares her wisdom in the Kula Diaries, and is the Founder of the life changing, “Dance Experiment”. Hey everybody pees! You, me, astronauts, even lobsters pee. Sometimes pee smells like asparagus, or buttered popcorn. Sometimes it's clear, or yellow, sometimes the medication you're taking turns it blue. No matter what, you got to get rid of all that gross urea, but if you happen to be an orphaned baby animal, or like.. in space, peeing is gonna be kind of a big ask. Find out how they do it, and how many rats it takes to pee as much as a human. We also go on wild tangent about possums. And lobster sex. So, you know, a pretty typical episode. In honor of piss, we've partnered with Kula Cloth to host a giveaway! Clearly we are not okay - as a society, as a community, as humans. After a nice weekend with some friends, we realized we had forgotten how to hang out, but only after remembering how good it felt. This might blow your mind, I know it did for me since the time period shared is from the year I graduated high school until near-present day. This article in The Atlantic talks about this phenomenon: "From 2003 to 2022, American men reduced their average hours of face-to-face socializing by about 30 percent. For unmarried Americans, the decline was even bigger—more than 35 percent. For teenagers, it was more than 45 percent. Boys and girls ages 15 to 19 reduced their weekly social hangouts by more than three hours a week. In short, there is no statistical record of any other period in U.S. history when people have spent more time on their own." In this episode, Sydney and Barry discuss: Hiking Your Feelings' themes and the universal application of the lessons and topics within "If it all ends tomorrow, I'm grateful that we've been doing the work we've been doing, and that I've gotten to know myself this well." - Sydney Sydney and Barry have a moment where language moves to embodied understanding, and then Sydney unpacks in real time, how that transition happens - finding the language -> understanding in context -> embodied understanding The benefits of having conversations on the trail vs. our tendency to rush through it face-to-face Barry shares a skydiving metaphor for how he's been feeling lately How to not die in the wilderness (and why Mount Washington in New Hampshire is so underestimated) UPCOMING EVENTS: March 4: Intentional Hiking - join us for a chance to win a Kula Cloth and a signed copy of Hiking Your Feelings: Blazing a Trail to Self-Love! Welcome to episode 403 of The Outdoor Biz Podcast, brought to you this week by Fresh Books. This week Brittany Coleman, founder of a new women's outdoor and lifestyle brand called Tough Cutie joins me. ToughCutie makes premium women's hiking socks and has a larger mission of supporting women from the ground up and increasing diversity in the outdoors. Founded in 2019, Tough Cutie has become the first and only outdoor sock brand with a majority women-owned value chain, and joins an estimated 1% of founders in the outdoor industry who identify as a person of color. You can contact me here: email: rick@theoutdoorbizpodcast.com Or leave me a message on Speakpipe! Show Notes Where did the idea for ToughCutie come from? The idea for ToughCutie came from the experiences of being a woman in business and the outdoor industry. It's about challenging the idea that women can't be both tough and feminine. When did you launch? ToughCutie launched just over a year ago, but the founder worked on the business for several years before the official launch. Are you a member of the REI Path Ahead Ventures program? Yes, ToughCutie is a member of the REI Path Ahead Ventures program. How did you get involved with REI? Brittany got connected to REI through an Instagram live interview with a prominent figure in the outdoor industry. Several people at REI saw the interview and reached out to initiate a conversation. What stage of business development would you say you're at, still in the launch phase? ToughCutie has launched its first product and is now working on the next one. The business is continually evolving and launching new products. Who does all the design, product management, etc. - is it you? Initially, Brittany was heavily involved in design and product management. As the brand has grown, she's started working with designers and other professionals. Why socks? Brittany's background was in the sock category of the outdoor industry. She recognized the opportunity to create a women's sock brand that challenges stereotypes. Are there socks for guys in your future? While ToughCutie primarily focuses on women's socks, men have also purchased and appreciated the socks. There is no specific mention of developing socks exclusively for men. How many doors are you in, excluding REI? ToughCutie is in approximately 30 stores, excluding REI. Who was your first customer outside of REI? Title IX was the first customer outside of REI. They became a customer after the founder won a competition called "Movers and Makers." Where is your manufacturing? ToughCutie manufactures its products in the United States, primarily in the South, and works with women-owned companies in its supply chain. Tell us about your first outdoor adventure. Brittany's first outdoor adventure was a trip to Mount Zion with their church, where she did a baptism. It was a significant and authentic outdoor experience. Do you have any suggestions and/or advice for folks wanting to start an Outdoor Brand? Start by understanding your customer and what problems you're solving for them. Build a community and invite people to be a part of your journey. Get feedback early on. Do you have a favorite piece of outdoor gear under $100? Two favorite pieces mentioned were the Kula Cloth, a pea cloth, and the Lucy inflatable lanterns for ambiance. What are a couple of your favorite books? "The Song of Achilles" and "The Outsiders" are two of Brittany's favorite books. Where can people find you if they'd like to follow up (email, Twitter, Instagram, etc)? Brittany's email is: bcoleman@toughcutie.com and she can also be found on LinkedIn. The brand can also be found on Instagram and their website, toughcutie.com.

Anastasia Allison is our guest for this episode.Kula Cloth is Anastasia's company one that she has grown in a genuine and unique way. Hear her story and get ready to be inspired.Anastasia has always been passionate about the outdoors. She was sidetracked during college by heading down the path to go to medical school because everyone in her school was going to medical school. After realizing this might not be the path she wanted....listen to hear what Anastasia did next. We chat about Kula's origin and how taking photos of her original "pee cloth" in epic wilderness settings inspired her to make the the cloth "cooler" and an actual piece of gear. No where in her imagination did she expect to create a movement.Kula Cloth is more than an outdoor product. It is a community, a community that dances together five days a week at 6:30am. One that learns together at Kula Academy. A community connected by humor, values, and a commitment to leave the wilderness better than it was before.KULA MEANS MORE THAN JUST A PIECE OF GEARThe Kula Cloth® gets its name from Kula Khangri - the tallest mountain in Bhutan. Anastasia completed a trek in Bhutan in 2011, and it was a life-changing experience for her. In this episode we discuss the items we pack in our backpacks for camping in the backcountry.
In episode 27 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, we explore the idea of using pee rags in the backcountry in a bit more detail. If you are a person with a vulva, and you squat when you pee, a pee rag can be an excellent low waste option. If you want more information about pee rags, menstrual cups, and more, go back and check out episode 17 where we explore all things menses and peeing in the woods. In that episode, we briefly cover some pee rag options, one of them being the Kula Cloth. Because peeing outside is something many of us do, I was excited to sit down and chat with Anastasia Allison. Anastasia Allison is the founder of Kula Cloth, the first of its kind - an antimicrobial pee cloth for anybody who squats when they pee. Anastasia has been described as, 'mysteriously complex' - and when she isn't doing work for Kula or contemplating the vastness of the universe, she spends her time playing violin in the mountains, writing whimsical poetry or dancing. Representation is a key piece to making the outdoors a more inclusive and welcoming place. While seeing more diversity in the world of professional athletes helps, it's equally important to have this diversity in the groups we join in the outdoors. That's where the mission of Inclusive Outdoors Project starts, as they strive to bridge the gap between affinity spaces and outdoor organizations. In this episode, Inclusive Outdoors Project founders Sophia Bielsky and Vasu Sojitra discuss the philosophy and mission behind their organization, and how their clinics are helping to shift the perceptions of the outdoor industry. Topics covered in this episode: • What inspires us to get outside. • The importance of inclusive terminology. • The power of affinity spaces. • Establishing an organization during COVID. In this episode:Blissful is taking a new Gossamer Gear ultralight "Gorilla" pack and "The One" tent on this thru-hike.Also an Ursack XL Major to keep grizzlies from nosing into her food which was a compromise to get the bigger bag at 15 liters but not critter impermeable.New aluminum LEKI Cross Trail trekking poles will hold her upright as well as her tent.Really special on trail are merino tops from Ibex - two hoodies of different weights as well as a T-shirt. I truly loved talking to Anastasia Allison. Anastasia is the Founder of Kula Cloth, an "antimicrobial pee cloth for anybody who squats when they pee" (kulacloth.com). Since my interview with Anastasia, I now have a Kula. I absolutely love it. This is a must for all active, outdoorsy women. In this interview, Anastasia generously shares her experiences about being bullied, shattering suffocating beliefs around work and money, the acceptance provided by the outdoors, and the importance of daily dancing. Anastasia is also a talented violinist who is part of The Musical Mountaineers, where the love of music and the mountains is experienced in the most unique way. This is a conversation that really spoke to me as we all contemplate new chapters, what we are living for and how to be confident in our passions and dreams. There is much to learn from Anastasia Allison, and I truly wanted to jump through Zoom to go for a hike with her. Enjoy. Original broadcast on CIUT 89.5FM and www.ciut.fm. I'm thrilled to welcome Michelle Ellison to the podcast today. I first met Michelle in 2018 when we paddleboarded on the Thames with Active 360 and then went to Adventure Uncovered Live. Michelle Ellison has been an adventurer, author, speaker, film producer and podcast club host since connecting with her love of the outdoors back in 2015. She has since paddle boarded the length of the River Thames for citizen science, the longest fjord in Norway, the English Channel, and more recently the width of England for mental health. Describing herself as a non-runner, cyclist and mountaineer, she took on cycling the length of the UK, running the width of the UK for mental health and suicide, and climbing the highest point in every European country. A kiwi at heart, her mantra of ‘make sh*t happen' pushes her to create new experiences for herself and others, believing in the power of connection and getting out of your comfort zone. When she's not in the outdoors you'll find Michelle scheming her latest adventure, spending hours talking to her friends and family on the phone (Covid-times), binging on Netflix and tending to her career in HR. In this episode, Michelle tells us about her exciting new venture bringing the Kula Cloth, which sounds fabulous and could make a great difference to women in the outdoors! To get more information on Michelle's projects and how you can buy your own environmentally friendly, technical antimicrobial pee cloth for your next adventure, visit www.shellsellison.com or @shells_ellison on Instagram. If you have any questions please get in touch! Two mountains bookend Blissful Hiker's walk of the Te Araroa in the Waikato Region of New Zealand's North Island – the Hakarimata Range and Mount Pirongia, and she discovers that a hiker is both spectator and participant. In this episode: Blissful walks over slippery roots and deep pools of mud to reach the Hakarimata Trig before running down hundreds of stairs. It's an easy walk to Hamilton where Blissful meets Irene, her partner from the first days of the Te Araroa, then another easy walk to Whatawhata, where she uses up all the good weather and faces a big challenge in rain. It's a long walk over farmland and up on the Kapamahunga Range, then on to the giant extinct volcano, Mount Pirongia. In a storm, friends from around the world await at the Pahautea Hut on the summit, and she learns that she "actuates" her hike - and life - in every decision she makes. The Blissful Hiker is back on New Zealand's Te Araroa walking through the Waikato Region in the center of the North Island. She learns to face her fear – as well as ambivalence and irritation – and muscle through the bad parts so she can be open to surprise. In this episode: Blissful skips a trail detour and starts her hike in muddy wetlands and electric-fenced pastureland. She arranges for a whole group to camp at Cathy's Pies and learns that whatever answers she's looking for on the trail, is likely already inside her. Her hiking friends share many of her same feelings about the trail and remind her this is all building "character." Once she moves past fear and gets her rhythm, she camps alone high up in the Hakarimata Range with an incredible sunset and a morepork (owl) for company. Peeing, pooping and periods. Oh yeah, we're "going" there. The founder of Kula Cloth, Anastasia Allison, joins us to talk about how to do all three of these things comfortably in the backcountry. Do you 'drip dry,' or 'shake it off'? What about if you pop a squat and notice a trail cam pointed at you? 1:30 - 'Snain' - snow up high, rain down low 4:00 - unannounced sunrise concerts in the backcountry, courtesy of a packed in keyboard and violin 4:45 - going from working in parks, to becoming a police officer, to entrepreneurship - Kula Cloth is a non-microbial cloth that helps you "go" wherever you need to 8:30 - On stealing toilet paper from another camper's backpack, and realizing you don't actually know HOW to go potty in the woods 11:45 - PEEING. Drip dry? Or, the 'aggressive shake-off'? 12:00 - It's important to stay dry and clean in the backcountry. Otherwise you're looking at chafing, UTIs, or plain old discomfort 13:00 - When peeing, be mindful of water sources nearby. Try to be 200 ft away 13:30 - How to pee? There are all kinds of ways. There's the trusty 'ol squat, or if you're in a climbing harness or drysuit, products like the SheWee or TinkleBell or SheFly pants. 14:45 - Even if you shake off after peeing, you're probably still going to have some residual moisture 16:00 - Description of a toilet bag 17:00 - Kula Cloth and other pee cloths are there to help you pat dry 18:00 - Caring for a pee cloth on a long backpacking trip 23:45 - POOP. That moment when you ask for the trowel and everybody knows where you're going 25:00 - You should be packing out toilet paper. Is it awkward shoving it in a clear ziplock bag and toting it to and from camp? Yes. One tip: Cover your poo baggie with duct tape. 26:00 - Digging a 6- to 8-inch hole sounds super easy, but it doesn't feel quick when you really need to go. You can pre-dig a hole as soon as you set-up camp. 27:00 - Nobody wants to show up to a campsite with a bunch of small rock shrines, which are actually just small poop temples for people who didn't bother to dig a hole. 28:00 - Toilet paper doesn't just disappear, especially in desert and alpine environments 28:30 - "Blue bag" areas - places where you're regulated to pack out your poop. (Also a good idea to be blue-bagging in snow-camping situations.) 30:00 - Blue-bagging can feel a little weird. It's like picking up dog poop, but you are the dog. 30:30 - go2 Outdoor Essentials 32:00 - "CuloClean" squirt nozzle for water bottle 33:00 - On husband-wife intimacy when it comes to poo in the backcountry 38:00 - Burning toilet paper - yay or nay? 39:30 - PERIODS. 40:30 - Menstrual cups, like Diva Cup and Pixie Cup. If you've ever thought of trying one, the ease of having your period in the backcountry is a huge perk. 41:45 - If you use tampons/pads, you're going to need to pack out the spent ones, preferably keeping them alongside your food so they're not a wildlife attractant. 47:30 - South entrance to Yellowstone... the notorious sign, "Bears and Menstruation." It's scaring everybody! 48:30 - What's the evidence on bear attacks being correlated to periods? Not much. 48:45 - "Night of the Grizzlies" book 50:00 - Worst thing ever: Popping a squat and then seeing a trail cam pointed at you 57:00 - Knockin' rainbows on the Snake for a Fish and Game bounty 1:00:01 - Toilet paper shortage has been serendipitous for Kula Cloth

Today’s conversation is with Anastasia Allison. Anastasia is a woman of many talents and interests. Early in her career she worked as a park ranger (a dream job for her) and then as a law enforcement officer for BNSF railway. She had a near death experience in a car accident that turned everything around for her. It was then that she stopped letting her fears get the best of her and it was at that point that she opened up to new possibilities including her work now as an entrepreneur with a very innovative, yet much needed product for women hikers. Fair warning that we dive right into a topic that isn’t usually discussed publicly but is at the core of her company, Kula Cloth. Oh, and to top it off, she plays violin and calls herself a musical mountaineer – and you’re going to hear a beautiful story about that. Episode 2: In today's episode, we chat with resident Kula Cloth creative director Amanda McIntyre about what initially sparked her interest in the outdoors (hint: it might surprise you!). She talks about growing up in a suburban area and some tips and tricks that she still uses (and we hope all of you will use too!) to take in all of the sounds and the full body experience of being in the outdoors. Amanda is an award-winning artist and she is the genius behind the unicorn, fox, bee and s'mores print Kulas. She is a mom and full-time artist who recently illustrated her first children's book. Anastasia Allison was an unusual kid. She was into things you and I probably were not such as volunteering at a national park as an interpretive guide wearing period costumes performing hymns and folk songs with her violin. Sounds like a super cool kid to me in many ways but sadly, Allison suffered a great deal of bullying as a child. It might be for that reason she spent a lot of her life trying to conform to this “what should we be and do with our lives.” She finally realized after a near-death experience, that she can actually do whatever she wants to and today, she owns a gear company that sells pee cloths - it’s called Kula Cloth - check it out a t kulacloth.com , she climbs mountains with her violin and performs music in the wilderness with the Musical Mountaineeers and she basically has defined what success means to her and is living it, a major prerequisite for being on this podcast. We talk about: A childhood of bullying - and turning it into a positive experience Overcoming limiting beliefs The role the woods plays in all this. So with that, let’s listen in and gear up for what’s next. Join Me at Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=5262583The Kula Cloth is just what women hikers, backpackers and travelers have needed. Creator Anastasia Allison is on this week to talk all about her new product. She jokes, "My target is women who pee!"Anastasia started using a bandana to clean up with after peeing on hikes. She thought there had to be a better way.Kula Cloth is the result! She found many things to improve on the standard bandana.* Clips to your backpack* Folds and clips to itself, keeping the unsanitary side unexposed* Promote Leave No Trace* Made from advanced silver-infused textiles that are purposely intended to be in contact with the human body* Reflective detail added to the cloth so that if you are on a backpacking trip and you need to locate the cloth in the middle of the nightFrom Anastasia's website on how to use-Simply pee, just like normal (note: in a wilderness setting, good practice is to choose a spot at least 70ft from a trail and 200ft from a water source... pro tip: if you are squatting down, it can be helpful to hold one trekking pole in front of you for stability). Use the plain black dimpled side of the Kula Cloth™ to absorb any residual moisture. Since the clean/printed side is waterproof, you don't need to worry about any liquid soaking through to your hand. Note: the Kula Cloth™ is NOT for wiping anything OTHER THAN pee. Do not wipe from front to back like you might with toilet paper - keep the Kula Cloth™ entirely in the pee-zone.Website- https://kulacloth.comFacebook- https://www.facebook.com/thekulacloth/Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/kulacloth/Waymark Gear CompanyHeavy duty ultralight backpackshttps://www.waymarkgearco.comLuxe Tents!
