    What happens when a mortal challenges the mighty gods? This week I'm reading a great short story from icon of horror, H.P. Lovecraft. Originally published in November of 1933 in the Fantasy Fan Magazine. Best known as the father of Lovecraftian Horror and the Cthulhu Mythology, H.P. Lovecraft, in his short life, became a master of weird and horrifying fiction. In this story we see a man, Barzai the Wise, attempt to meet the gods.     A little whimsy, now and then, makes for good balance. Theoretically, you could find this type of humor anywhere. But only a topflight science-fictionist, we thought, could have written this story, in just this way…. This week is a story from another legendary writer, Philip K Dick, called They Eyes Have It. Originally published in 1953 in “Science Fiction Stories”. Philip K Dick is an American writer known for his fiction exploring everything from altered realities to questions around the human condition. Possibly best known for his story, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, which went on to become the sci-fi film classic Blade Runner. In this story we get a glimpse at a masterful shift in perception with a humorous twist as he examines some common phrases in the English language. Henry Slesar is an author known for his use of irony and surprise “twist” endings in his work and is most well known for his wide variety of work with the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. Slesar's story, ‘M is for the Many' was the first story Hitchcock purchased the rights to adapt, which kicked off a long and successful stretch of collaborations between the two. It's a tale of a fierce warrior's encounter with the icy daughter of a God after standing as the lone, victorious warrior on a bloody battlefield. Originally published in March 1934 in "The Fantasy Fan", then reprinted in Fantastic Universe December 1956. Robert E Howard is best known as being the author and creator of the fantastica tales of Conan the Barbarian, and this story is a glimpse into other times in this world.
