He loses consciousness and falls into the river below the bridge as the rope snapped. He awakens to a strong pain running through his body. Farquhar sees a light flash and fade before it grows brighter and he rises to the surface of the river. He is afraid that he will be shot by the northern forces as soon as he is spotted in the water, and makes an attempt to free his hands and neck from the rope. Once freed he finally breaks the surface of the water and inhales deeply and painfully. He looks to the bridge and sees his executioners standing on the bridge looking for him. A sentinel fires his rifle at him but misses, Farquhar notices his grey eyes through the sight of the gun. Farquhar then hears the lieutenant instructing his men to fire, so he dives under the water and swims with the current away from the bridge. A cannonball lands two feet away from him and he swims harder for the shore. He is spun round by the current and winds up on a gravelly bank out of site and range of the gunfire. He weeps with joy and takes in the beautiful landscape around him. He heads into the forest and follows a path, walking all day to his home. Time seems to pass without him noticing, and he rouses standing at his front gate. He makes his way towards his home and sees his wife come down the verandah to meet him. When he moves to embrace her, he feels a sharp pain in his neck and sees a blinding white light. Farquhar is dead. He is hanging at Owl Creek Bridge.

One day, while he and his wife sitting on their patio, a grey-clad soldier rode up to them and asked for a glass of water. The soldier appears to be a confederate. While his wife got some water, Farquhar asked some questions from the front and was informed by that the Northern forces took Owl Creek Bridge, and have repaired the railroad to prepare for an advance. Any civilian caught interfering with the Northern forces would be hanged. Farquhar asks how someone could help the southern forces, and the man replies that he could easily set fire to the driftwood in the area to burn the bridge down. The man then drinks his water and leaves, and we are informed that he was actually a Northern scout.

His wrists are bound and there is a rope tied around his neck. He is positioned on loose planks that have been made into a makeshift platform. Two army soldiers, a captain and a sergeant from the Northern Army are surrounding him. Farquhar observes the forest scene around him and takes in the army on the banks of the bridge while the men around him move to their final positions. Awaiting the captain's signal, the sergeant is about to step away to let Farquhar drop. Farquhar tries to stare into the water swirling below. He watches some driftwood get carried away by the slow water. He shuts his eyes to push away any visual distractions and tries to think of his family. He gets distracting by a ringing metal tone that seems to bang constantly, but slower and slower. Farquhar opens his eyes and tries to imagine himself freeing his hand and swimming away down the river to his family. These thoughts are barely realised before the captain nods and the sergeant steps off of the board.

IN THIS EPISODE: It's Thriller Thursday – and this week I'm bringing you three tales of fiction. I'll share a short story that has been described as "one of the most famous and frequently anthologized stories in American literature" – it's “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by the legendary Ambrose Bierce, from 1890. I have a classic creepypasta from 2016 that many people mistakenly believe is a true story because it is so well written. It's “The Strange Case of Edmonson Kentucky” by Joe Terrell. But first, it's a short story of fiction as told by one of the hardest-working writers I know, as she is always posting new stories on Facebook: Christina Skelton. It's a story from April 2020 titled simply, “The Ghost Bus”.YOUTUBE TIME STAMPS…00:00.00.000 = Introduction/Show Open00:02:08.463 = “The Ghost Bus” by Christina Skelton00:12:56.446 = “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce00:37:19.785 = “The Strange Case of Edmonson, Kentucky” by Joe TerrellSOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…“An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/uu4acekx“The Ghost Bus” by Christina Skelton: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/phupb8p4“The Strange Case of Edmonson, Kentucky” by Joe Terrell: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/sdtru243Weird Darkness theme by Alibi Music Library. = = = = =(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. "The Passerby" includes a wonderful Abraham Lincoln portrayal from Austin Green, while "Owl Creek" is a short-film that was purchased as a completed project and edited to become last episode of The Twilight Zone ever produced. [ARCHIVES] Ambrose Bierce was an American Civil War veteran. As a Union soldier Bierce fought in many battles, was wounded, and went on to become a pioneer in the horror genre, helping introduce the psychological thriller to the American story. American tradition is steeped in rich horror and veterans like Bierce who have taken their experiences in war and service and twisted them into terrifying tales for the public are a staple in that tradition. Edgar Allen Poe, a king of the American gothic, had a stint in the Army, enlisting under a fake name and age in 1827. Rod Serling, the creator and host of The Twilight Zone, fought in World War II, earning a bronze star and purple heart before going on to terrifying millions with dark, otherworldly frights on TV. These are some of the few, but impactful authors who have transposed the horrors of war into macabre fiction – and today, that tradition continues. On this episode of Fire Watch, we explore that tradition through contemporary authors – who are also veterans – in a reading of Bierce's An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. This episode contains adult themes, violence and swearing. Sound effects courtesy of Zapsplat.com. In this episode: Drew F. Lawrence, Briane Keene, Jonathan Raab, Dacia Arnold, Russell James and Weston Ochse.

Rebekah and Richard host local historian of African American history, Peggy Towns, and Limestone County educator, Chris Paysinger, for a look into Athens and Limestone County during the early days of the Civil War. Originally sympathetic with the Union, find out what triggered the turning point for the city of Athens. Also learn about the United States Colored Infantry stationed at Fort Henderson as well as speculation that the famous short story, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," may have been inspired from the Battle of Sulphur Creek Trestle right here in Limestone County. It is a time of Civil War and military justice is about to be served on a railroad bridge in Alabama. As the man waits for his execution at the hands of Federal soldiers, he looks down at the water below him and thinks of his wife and children. It's a story from April 2020 titled simply, “The Ghost Bus”.SOURCES AND ESSENTIAL WEB LINKS…“An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/uu4acekx “The Ghost Bus” by Christina Skelton: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/phupb8p4 “The Strange Case of Edmonson, Kentucky” by Joe Terrell: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/sdtru243 Weird Darkness theme by Alibi Music Library.
