CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of deafness, blindness, ableism. If you've ever done theater, and we definitely have, you dread the thought of having to deal with anything related to this movie and this story. And you'd be right to, because all too often we tell a sanitized, ableist, overacted retelling of a very real story: the breakthrough Annie Sullivan had teaching her student Helen Keller to communicate. So you'll have to pardon our shock while watching the original film adaptation of the Broadway success, and finding it's in fact a brilliant film. Director Arthur Penn is brilliant in adapting his own stage production by showing and not telling, a move that seems impossible for most stage to screen adaptations. Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, reprising their roles from Broadway, are absolutely phenomenal. And sure, the supporting cast might as well be cardboard cutouts, but it doesn't matter when you've got a film as compellingly made as this one. We're staying in the 60s this week and with Patty Duke, but instead of sparkling as Neely O'Hara she's learning to fold her napkin and beating the crap out of Annie Sullivan in “The Miracle Worker”! Duke and Anne Bancroft deservedly both won Oscars in this portrayal of Helen Keller's arduous journey to learn not only how to read and speak but the concept of words and letters. And also discipline and table manners, much to the dismay of her coddling mother Kate (best supporting Inga Swenson) and Aubrey List inductee Captain Keller, which gives us the iconic 10 minute breakfast scene. We discuss the parallels with parenting children with special needs, and of course our own irrelevant experience as pet parents, we turn a corner on Helen Keller jokes and are inspired to channel our own inner Annie's. Katharine Hepburn - Long Day's Journey into Night Geraldine Page - Sweet Bird of Youth Lee Remick - Days of Wine and Roses - In 1963 Bette Davis was odds on favourite to win her third Oscar and become the first actor to have three for her performance in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. However on Oscar night Davis famously lost to Anne Bancroft for her physically demanding role playing Annie Sullivan in The Miracle Worker. To add salt in the wounds her on-screen (and allegedly off-screen) enemy Joan Crawford took to the podium to accept the award on Bancroft's behalf. It was viewed as a petty act of revenge toward Davis and to the Academy for not being nominated for Jane. Crawford also allegedly actively campaigned against Davis to ensure her loss. This was definitively a juicy year! You can't really talk about Bancroft's win without talking about the infamous feud between Davis and Crawford. Others nominated were Katharine Hepburn, Geraldine Page, and Lee Remick. This year really came down to Davis vs. Bancroft in our opinion. Listen to our new episode as we discuss! “A bend in the road is not the end of the road…Unless you fail to make the turn.” ~Helen Keller Most of us know Helen Keller as the deaf-blind woman who was able to break out of her “double dungeon of darkness and silence” through the teaching and determination of young Anne Sullivan, who herself struggled with partial blindness. But less well-known are other fascinating details about Helen Keller… and the equally admirable teacher who dedicated her life to supporting Helen's dreams.  Once referred to by Winston Churchhill as “the greatest woman of our age,” Helen Keller's story extends far beyond what we see in the classic play and film, “The Miracle Worker.”  From her breakthrough with language at the well, to her friendship with Alexander Graham Bell and Mark Twain, to her work as an advocate for social change, to the accusations of fraud, Candy and Ashley discuss how Helen was able to navigate the many “bends in the road” she encountered with strength and conviction.

Over the last decade, Helen Keller went from a saint to a hoax—which means the real woman has long been lost under the hagiography and now the TikTok deniers. Among other things: Helen Keller was a devoted socialist who starred in a silent movie about her life and had her eyes replaced with glass ones. But the most telling scandal involving Helen and her teacher, Annie Sullivan, is one that happened when she was 12 years old and newly famous. The story spiraled quickly out of control, becoming national news and resulting in Helen facing a hostile tribunal and eventually succumbing to a nervous breakdown and vowing never again to write fiction. What happened? Why was a 12-year-old subjected to this kind of treatment? And what did Mark Twain have to say about all this? Mark walks us through "The Frost King" debacle. When the ship stopped in Norfolk, Virginia, Noah ate some cherries for the very first time. He must have liked them because he later added cherry trees to his orchard. Noah Webster was a fierce gardener. He enjoyed his time in the garden, and he planted all kinds of vegetables, like parsnips, carrots, cucumbers, beets, and potatoes. In fact, in his dictionary, Noah Webster defined potatoes as, one of the cheapest and most nourishing vegetables. And then he got a little spiritual about the potato. Noah wrote, In the British dominions and in the United States, the potato has proved to be one of the greatest blessings bestowed on man by the Creator.   Noah Webster was also a fan of farming. He called farming, the most necessary, the most healthy, the most innocent, and the most agreeable employment of men.   Noah Webster had a property in Amhurst, and over the years, he gradually acquired the land around his property until he had around ten acres. On this land. Noah built a barn. He had a chaise house, and he also planted a magnificent garden. Everyone in Amhurst knew that Noah Webster's orchard was the best in the town. Noah grew pears. He had apple trees and peach trees - and even grew sweet white grapes,   1859 From The Diary of Calvin Fletcher, American attorney who became a prominent banker, farmer, and state senator in Indianapolis, Indiana This a beautiful day.  My early corn one foot high.  Early potatoes set for blossom.  Early tomatoes six and eight inches high.  Grapes in full blossom. Strawberrys Ditto.  Two messes of green peas.  The grass in the yard cut one week ago.  Raspberrys nearly full grown. Currants ditto former good size latter small.     1888 Birth of Henry Beston (books by this author), American writer and naturalist. Last week I discovered Henry Beston when I researched his wife, the writer, and poet, Elizabeth Coatsworth (books by this author). I have to say it was a thrill getting to know both of them. Henry is best remembered for his book The Outermost House (1928). Henry wrote the book during the year spent on the Great Beach of Cape Cod. He isolated himself in a house on the beach and devoted himself to writing about life along the shore. Henry wrote his book in longhand at a kitchen table. During this year, when Henry was sequestered in this house, he actually met his future wife, Elizabeth, at a garden party. Later on, when he proposed marriage to Elizabeth, She told him, "No book. No marriage". So that was an extra incentive for Henry to finish his book. Now Henry and Elizabeth went on to have two little girls.  Their daughter, Kate Barnes (books by this author), became a respected author and poet in her own right. Here's a little excerpt from her poem called Old Roses, which is about how her parents met. Kate wrote, When my father met my mother at a dinner party in a garden of very old roses on Beacon Hill one hot evening in early June, he said to his friend, F. Morton Smith, that night, "Morton, I have met the girl I'm going to marry!" (We have Uncle Morton's testimony for that, the certified word of a Boston lawyer.) My mother said my father had looked handsome, yes, and talked delightfully, but what she remembered were the mosquitoes. "If you stopped slapping at them, even for a second, you were eaten up alive."   Henry wrote many different books. Of course, most of them are about nature, but there was one garden book that caught my attention, and it's called Herbs and the Earth. And in this book, Henry wrote. A garden of herbs, is a garden of things loved for themselves in their wholeness and integrity. It is not a garden of flowers, but a garden of plants which are sometimes very lovely flowers and are always more than flowers.   Isn't that a great quote about herbs? The more I read about Henry Beston, the more it became apparent that Henry was a profound thinker and thought about gardening on a much deeper level.  I think it's because Henry was so grounded in the tenants of nature.  Listen to how Henry describes watering plants. This is a perspective that I have not heard before. Henry wrote. If gardeners will forget a little the phrase, "watering the plants" and think of watering as a matter of "watering the earth" under the plants, keeping up its moisture content and gauging. its need, the garden will get on very well.    And isn't that the truth?  Here's a delightful little quote by Henry. It's about. Fall: The leaves fall, the wind blows, and the farm country slowly changes from the summer cottons into its winter wools.   1968 Death of Helen Keller (books about this person), American author, disability rights advocate, and lecture.  Helen lost both her sight and hearing when she was a little toddler at the age of 19 months. In the years before she met her excellent teacher, she would turn to nature whenever she was frustrated. She was like her father in that way; they both enjoyed being outdoors. And the Keller family garden was a place where Helen could go to find solace. Helen once wrote. People often have no idea how fair the flour is to the touch. Nor do they appreciate its fragrance, which is the soul of the flower.   And Helen also wrote, I feel the delightful velvety texture of a flower and discover its remarkable convolutions and something of the miracle of nature is revealed to me. Helen's favorite flower was the peony. If you think about holding a peony and the fragrance of the peony, it's no wonder why that flower had a special appeal to Helen. Helen once said, Since my childhood, I have adored them and have been glad each spring. When the miracle of their bloom.has been wrought again.   In 1961, Helen Keller retired from public life, and she spent the last seven years of her life walking in her garden and reading books. After Helen died of a heart attack on June 1st, 1968, her ashes were placed beside her dear friend and teacher, Annie Sullivan, at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. Helen was once asked if she believed. In heaven. She replied, Most certainly.  It is no more than passing from one room into another.  But there's a difference for me.  Because in the other room, I will be able to see.      Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation The Pig by Robin Hutson This book came out in 2019, and the subtitle is Tales and Recipes from the Kitchen Garden and Beyond. Tom Parker Bowles raved, The Pig revolutionised the country house hotel, creating a true rooms home away from hame. No pomp or pretence, just beautiful and magnificent food with produce from their own kitchen gardens. Where The Pig goes, the others follow. From the publisher: A stylish, practical guide to living the good life. Among the pages of The Pig, you will find an idiosyncratic, seasonal approach to the good life, with delicious recipes, how-to guides, lists, panels, and stories. Chapters include one called Out in the Garden - The benefits of growing 12 types of mint- An essay on "the sweetness of carrots"- How to make your own sack garden- Recipe for the Gardener's sandwich   Here's how Robin introduces his restaurant, The Pig, and the journey he's been on these past dozen years. We opened The Pig back in July 2011, although in some respects it feels like a whole lot longer ago than that.  One thing's for sure - we've learnt a lot along the way in those few years. For a start, we've become experts in growing our own and making the most of what we produce. We know how to seek out small artisan producers and work with them to bring some amazing ingredients to the table. We've discovered how to keep bees and make delicious honey. A nd we've even perfected the art of building smokehouses - now we smoke everything in sight, from salmon and salt to beetroot and beef. Beyond the kitchen and garden, we've worked out how to infuse just about anything into gin and vodka and have become past masters at upcycling junk-shop treasures.  The purpose of this book is to share with you some of these discoveries.   If you have visions of a working kitchen garden on a grand scale, listen as Robin tells us what it takes to make it all work at The Pig. We'd heard horrible stories of kitchen gardens at other hotels where the garden produce was left to perish in the soil because there was no shared vision between the chef and the gardener, so we knew this relationship was key. Happily, we've seen no such sorry sights in our gardens. In fact, the bond between garden and kitchen - headed up by Ollie (senior kitchen gardener) and James (chef director) is so strong, there now exists an almost obsessional culture for all things home-grown, homemade and local. Certainly on day one of The Pig, back in the summer of 2011, we didn't envisage the garden team we have today with around 20 kitchen gardeners working across several acres of productive gardens, and our own plant nursery for seedlings. The gardens didn't just play a major part in influencing the food style and the menus but many other aspects of the overall operation, too.   And here's just a random sampling of recipe titles from the index under the letter H: hazelnuts: - nettle salsa verde 143 - salt-baked celeriac salad 84-5 hens 128, 174-5 herbs: garden herb oil 98-9 - growing 114-15 - winter savory $1 herbal healing 255-6 - infusions 208-11, 260 - planters for 241 - in pots 229 - see also basil; lemon verbena; mint; rosemary herby popcorn 205 honey 130-1 - honey clotted cream 123 horseradish: cylindra beetroot & - horseradish toasts 68-9 - making horseradish sauce 68   Here's a glimpse of one of my favorite recipes from this book, Judy's Tomatoes on Toast. Robin writes,  You might think you know what tomatoes on toast tastes like... but believe me, once you've tried this version you'll never have it any other way - it's one of our all-time favourites at home. The tomatoes are so juicy and buttery, and the sourdough toast has just the right combination of crispness and chewiness. Of course the big thing here is the quality of the tomatoes, which can be a bit of a challenge in the UK, especially in the winter. I love Isle of Wight tomatoes, when I can get them. They come in different varieties from some of the best growers in the UK and are fairly local to us as well, which is a bonus. 2 big knobs of salted butter, plus extra for the toast 1kg (2lb 4oz) of the ripest, sweetest, medium-sized tomatoes you can get, roughly chopped A splash of Worcestershire sauce (optional: it's not part of Judy's version but I sometimes add some If I'm feeling a bit wild - woohoo!) 4 large slices of very holey sourdough bread salt and pepper Melt the butter in a saucepan over low heat and add the tomatoes (and a splash of Worcestershire sauce, if you like).  Cook them gently for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Don't boil them, just let them simmer, and then season to your taste. Meanwhile, toast the bread to a nice dark color and spread with a little more butter. By this time the mixture should be halfway between solid and soup, so pour it onto the toast and away you go.   This book is 304 pages of Robin Hutson's The Pig. You can get a copy of The Pig by Robin Hutson and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for around $8.   Botanic Spark 1917 On this day, a garden accident occurred in West Scranton, Pennsylvania. The story was reported in the 11th volume of the Coal Age magazine. Here's what it said. While Mrs. Theodore Barton was pulling weeds in her garden on June 1st, the ground suddenly gave way under her, and she landed in an old abandoned mine gangway that was 18 feet below. A mine gangway is the highway of the mind, and it's a permanent and often fortified part of the mine. It's heavily timbered on the sides and the roof. And so this event of Mrs. Barton falling through a gangway was actually quite unusual, although I'm sure it was terribly frightening. The article says that several neighbors heard Mrs. Barton screaming for help, and they ended up rescuing her after considerable effort. So all's well, that ends well. But I tell you what: the garden can still be a place where dangerous things can happen. Last fall, I had a terrible fall in my garden. I ended up face planting right into the hard ground. It was early November. And I remember lying there thinking, am I still alive? I'm not kidding. It was such an abrupt fall. I didn't even have time to brace myself. But it underscored something that I always tell my student gardeners and gardeners in general. And that is that it's always a good idea to have your phone on you. Not only for taking pictures of all the beautiful plants and flowers that you're working with but also for your personal safety when you're in the garden.    Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

Fantasy writer Elsa Sjunneson has been haunted by Helen Keller for nearly her entire life. Like Helen, Elsa is Deafblind, and growing up she was constantly compared to her. But for a million different reasons she hated that, because she felt different from her in a million different ways. Then, a year ago, an online conspiracy theory claiming Helen was a fraud exploded on TikTok, and suddenly Elsa found herself drawing her sword and jumping to Helen's defense, setting off a chain of events that would bring her closer to the disability icon than she ever dreamt. For over a year, Elsa, Lulu and the Radiolab team dug through primary sources, talked to experts, even visited Helen's birthplace Ivy Green, and discovered the real story of Helen Keller is far more complicated, mysterious and confounding than the simple myth of a young Deafblind girl rescued by her teacher Annie Sullivan. It's a story of ghosts, surprises, a few tears, a bit of romance, some hard conversations, and a possibly psychic dog. This episode was reported by Elsa Sjunneson and Lulu Miller. . The Christmas Spirit We commemorate God's love and condescension by celebrating Christmas. We recognize what needs to be done while even one person's life is in jeopardy. God saw an entire globe of people in grave danger when He gazed down on our sinful earth. We celebrate Christmas because it was during this season that the Savior of the World came to rescue us from our miserable predicament. God did not remain in heaven; He came down to earth to be among us 2. Spread Joyfulness The holiday season officially begins around Christmas. The atmosphere is filled with positive energy and is stress-relieving. Allow your children to be themselves and participate in the fun. Christmas celebrations at school are also a joyous occasion. It contributes to the development of team spirit, mutual aid, and cohesiveness. 3. Learning about God and Faith Christmas is one of those holidays that is observed by people of all castes, creeds, and faiths. It is a festival that honors family love, warmth, joy, and selflessness. It's important to enjoy Christmas in all of its glory with your children so that they can learn about different faiths festivals and develop a feeling of religious tolerance. 4. Happy times With Family Among all of these celebrations, the Christmas supper is the most memorable. It encourages families to get together and spend time together. Your children will meet and become acquainted with all of your relatives. They get to feel firsthand the warmth and affection of family and learn what it means. 5. Connecting With Friends Prepare for the celebrations by incorporating your children in decorating and cleaning. There is a lot of labor that goes along with having a lot of pleasure. Encourage kids to make their own Christmas decorations and hang them on the tree. Include them in the preparation of various snacks and sweetmeats. These preparations can be a lot of fun for the kids, and it allows you to spend quality time with them. 6. The Joy Of Giving Christmas is all about exchanging gifts and having a good time. Encourage your child to buy thoughtful gifts for friends and family so that they can experience the joy of giving. Teach children how to make personalized gifts and join them in making them for their friends. Encourage them to take part in toy drives, food drives, or Secret Santa games for underprivileged kids. They will gradually learn to empathize with those who are less fortunate in this manner. 7. To celebrate Jesus Birth We celebrate Christmas to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. When the world was driven to darkness, Jesus was born to show them a different path, away from darkness and close to Godliness. He was born even when he had known that he would die in a gruesome way. 8. God's Love for Us Sinners God did not bother in suffering being born in this cruel world. He did not bother all that and was born to guide us to a better life away from sin. It is said that an angel said that this baby will bring light to the world, and he did. 9. Bringing Light into the World Helen Keller lost her hearing and sight as a child, but a woman named Annie Sullivan came into her life and taught her how to hear and see without using her eyes. Consider what would have happened if Helen didn't have Annie Sullivan. That's how our lives would be if we didn't have Jesus. Darkness. Jesus, on the other hand, brings Light to our world. (John 1:1-5, 8:12, 12:46) 10. To celebrate God's Glory God's gift to us is Jesus, who is entirely God in the flesh. "I want you to know who I am, so here," God seems to be saying. My name is My Son. He's exactly like me. Learn about Him, and you'll learn about Me." If a blind and deaf woman can learn to sing—just think what you can do! The blind will see, the deaf will hear, and those people who sing off key will sound like angels. At age 14, Helen Keller and her trusted teacher, Annie Sullivan, 28, come to bustling New York City in 1894 so Helen can take singing lessons in order to talk better. Although deaf and blind, Helen is not timid enough to give up. She starts classes in lip-reading, math, English literature, U.S. history, and keeps a diary. Intimidated by singing lessons, Helen embraces the piano and physically senses the music. Recognizing the beauty others experience through music, she wants that, too. Helen’s progress is slow. She tries to keep her hand on her a professor’s throat or on the piano, but becomes confused easily. She is devastated that she must re-learn breathing. Helen longs to sound beautiful and make everyone stop and listen. She imagines beautiful birds singing, but her own singing is forced and her voice sounds bitter. She is embarrassed and not sure she wants to continue the lessons. Meanwhile, Annie learns techniques from the school’s professors that may help her better teach Helen. Isolated by her physical impairments, Helen feels increasingly alone in her journey not only to speak, but also to sing. She improves a little in lip-reading but still cannot read rapid speech. She wants so much to persevere and succeed, if only she could talk and sing like other people. Helen attends the symphony where she senses the magnificent music through her feet. At a dog show, the barking feels to a delighted Helen like a dog-orchestra. She enjoys the rhythm of the piano and asks for private lessons, hoping it will help her singing. She tries to hum the tones that she feels coming from the piano but is again frustrated by the barriers as she imagines writing wonderful hymns on the piano. A visit to the Statue of Liberty inspires in Helen a renewed will to sing and talk more clearly. Though she wants others to think she sings beautifully, she now embraces the freedom to sing whether or not other people approve. At her next lesson, Helen imagines a beautiful, soaring voice . . . hers. She is finally free from judgment. [Production Note for Stage: The nature of Helen’s journey can be told through variations in the sounds the audience hears: everything as usual; no sound when they see what Helen feels; then hear how she imagines the vibrations would sound. A palette of period-sepia goldens and browns would symbolize Helen’s blindness, while accents of blue would signal her varying emotions.]

We talk about her soon-to-be-released YA novel CURSE OF GOLD, sequel to TOUCH OF GOLD, as well as SHARKTOPUS VS WHALEWOLF. Since I know Annie has long been an “aspiring recluse,” I’m eager to learn how she’s been enjoying quarantine for Covid-19 and how she’s promoting her new book without leaving home. We also chat about being a TIGER QUEEN in the age of Tiger King, Greek mythology, leaving Easter Eggs for readers, the time I got robbed, the Loch Ness monster, comma warfare, and so much more. Annie Sullivan is a Young Adult author from Indianapolis, Indiana. Her work has been featured in Curly Red Stories and Punchnels. She loves fairytales, everything Jane Austen, and traveling and exploring new cultures. When she’s not off on her own adventures, she’s teaching classes at the Indiana Writers Center and working as the Copy Specialist at John Wiley and Sons, Inc. publishing company, having also worked there in Editorial and Publicity roles. Ashley Jackson can't see or hear. Yet this girl is one of the most brilliant minds I've ever met.   In this episode, she shares her story of living without hearing or sight. When I first met Ashley, back when Lexie was only 10 months old, I knew a smattering of sign language. Okay, I knew most of the sign alphabet.   As a child, the first "real" biography I'd ever read was about Annie Sullivan, Helen Keller's teacher, and how she finger-spelled the sign alphabet into Helen's hand to teach her...everything. I devoured the story of this half-blind teacher locking the kitchen door when tiny manic Helen clawed her way around the table, snatching people's food, and battled this wild child into folding her napkin.     That story of how one woman opened the world for someone living in darkness shaped who I'd become, as a teacher, mother, writer. Yet I never dreamed I'd actually get to finger-spell into a deaf-blind hand.   Not until that day on a loud, crowded church bus when this tall teenage girl climbed on the bus holding onto her cousin's shoulder. No, she wasn't just blind. She was also deaf. And if someone only knew how sign, she could understand what they were spelling by feeling their hand.   I tried it.   It worked.   On that bouncing bus, I spelled into her hand, "M-y  n-a-m-e  i-s  R-e-b-e-k-(bump)-h."   "Oh, Rebekah. Hello."   Shaking my head, I continued. "W-h-e-e  d-o  y-o-u  g-o  t-o  s-c-h-o-l" (Oh yes, I did misspell a lot. For a while I honestly thought the sign for "r" was "t")   "Where do I go to school? Oh, Tennessee School for the Blind. I'm just visiting here for the weekend."   I raced my stuttering fingers across her palm, trying to get to know this amazing person as well as I could in the short amount of time we had. I only saw her two or three times after that. Each time, I'd learned a few more signs. Just hoping I could talk to her again.   So imagine my delight when I met Ashley a decade later (last year). Now she was a senior at UT Martin, even more brilliant and polished. I began driving her to church sometimes, and on one of those trips she let me interview her so you can also hear her story. Ashley lost her eyes before she turned a year old. Her prosthetic eyes are lovely, but she sees nothing. Her hearing was lost shortly afterward, but thanks to God's gift of brilliant minds and medical technology, she now has cochlear implants that somehow transmit sound waves to her brain and allow her to understand speech. That's how I was able to interview her while driving.   She still "hears" through finger spelling, but she has also learned to understand speech. You'll hear more about that in the interview.   What's most impressive to me is Ashley's hunger to learn, and even more, to share with others. She's graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin and dreams of opening the world up for children with disabilities.   This one quick truck ride didn't allow us time to share her entire story, and Ashley's a gifted speaker. If you're interested in booking someone who will leave your group a lifelong impression, make sure to check out her website and consider booking her for a speaking engagement. She's about to head up to Gallaudet University to get her Master's, so if you're local, don't wait too long!   I hope you enjoy this interview. Please excuse the vehicle noises. This story is a gift from God. Let's not take the precious gifts of life, sight, or hearing for granted. And like Ashley, may we never use our weaknesses as excuses, but rather, as bridges to help others.   Visit Ashley's website here

Today we're talking with a novelist who doesn't just get described as "bestselling" and "prolific" – she's a person whose name defines both, and at a scale that very few other writers approach.  Since she began her publishing career with 1973's Going Home, Danielle Steel has published over 170 books and sold over 650 million copies, making her one of the most-read writers of all time.  This unparalleled output has been driven by a writer who works in a suitably legendary fashion – late into the night, on her vintage typewriter.  Danielle Steel's latest novel is Silent Night, the story of a child actor and a professional woman brought together by a sudden tragedy.  With a setting informed by the careful research that is one of Steel's trademarks, it's a story about an unexpected bond with echoes of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan.  Danielle Steel agreed to spend a few minutes away from her work to talk with us, and even though it was actually the middle of the afternoon when we reached her on the phone, it felt like the kind of middle-of-the night conversation you have with a friend who is working at all hours, on another all-consuming project.

You will discover a newfound sense of purpose and belonging once you understand that you are here for a reason. 5 MM 143 I am Nobody Hey my friend, thanks for coming back to Five Minute Mojo.  We have work to do today.  We need to start thinking about how important you are to the world.  We have got to get you thinking that you are powerful, capable and worthy of an amazing life.  It would seem that yesterday’s show was the perfect segue for today. Yesterday we talked about looking the part of a person of confidence and power and today we are going to go inside your head to do some work there. Okay, right from the get go, who is more important than you?  Sure, we can make that the question of the day; well one of them anyway. I’ll give you time to think.  After all there are billions of people on the planet.  Make sure you take stock of everybody; celebrities, athletes, political figures.  Do you need more time?  Let’s just start with the list you have now.  Who’s on it? Okay, I feel bad.  I set you up.  I asked you a question without an answer. Wait, wait, wait, thom, thom…I have an answer. Well, I am not a guy who has all the answers, but for our purposes today there is only one answer, no one. Of course there are people with more political clout, more celebrity, more wealth, but that doesn’t make them more important.  One of the ways we start to live more fully is to understand that there is no better or worse when it comes to people.  There are just people, each of which is trying to make a life the best way they know how.  From the outside we might see some people and question that motive.  However, I would encourage you to try.  See where the heroin addict is trying to live fully.  See where the billionaire is trying to live better.  See how everyone is trying their best to get through life. What about you?  I asked the question earlier to start you thinking about where you give away your power.  is someone more famous more important than you?  of course not.  Is the scientist who develops a cure for a widespread disease more important than you? No.  He or she will have a greater impact on the world possibly, but that doesn’t make them more important.  We seem to think that the more popular you are the more important you are.  That’s thinking that will have you feeling second best to a majority of people.   That misperception is quite possibly why people gloat about having 30,000 followers on twitter or 20k friends on Facebook.  It’s not how many people you know that determines your worth.  The simple truth is that we all matter.  Each one of us didn’t arrive on the planet by mistake.  We are part of the fabric of everything.  When you stop giving away your power by assuming wealthier, smarter or more powerful people are more important, the happier you will be. It comes down to how you feel about who you are.  If you feel like you are adding to the world then you might not have trouble interacting with anyone.  You would understand that regardless of scope your reason to be here is just as important as anyone’s. In the United States, our culture certainly adds fuel to the hierarchical thinking that average people are less than those in the spotlight.  But hey, let them.  You know better.  You know that you are here for a reason.  And if you don’t, then maybe it’s time you start taking some time to really look at the impact you have on the world. With that said, impact isn’t about scope.  Annie Sullivan was one person. She didn’t seek notoriety or fame.  She simply wanted to help a blind, deaf woman interact with the world.  And she did.  She helped Helen Keller escape the darkness and silence.  She forged a friendship that would help the world rethink disability and woman’s right’s. You have the capability to change the world.  The truth is, you already are.  All you need to do is recognize that your place in the world is necessary. I’ll leave it at that my good friends.  I’ll leave the earlier question of the day as the real question of the day.  As you head home, I would encourage you to think about how you matter.  That question alone is the very gist of ZEN commuter and Five Minute Mojo. There is no need for loneliness or despair my friends.  No need for worry or pain.  Believe that you are here for a reason.  If you aren’t sure what that is, then just quite yourself and ask the question out loud.  You’ll have the answer soon enough. This is Thom Walters signing off for five-minute Mojo.  Make the rest of the day amazing, sleep tight and sweet dreams.

The play, “The Miracle Worker” re-tells the story of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan. Douglas Oakey has this review of a production at Peoria Players Theatre, for Peoria Public Radio and the Live Theatre League. Opinions expressed are those of the reviewer, not those of Peoria Public Radio or the Live Theatre League. Peoria Players Theatre dusts off William Gibson’s “The Miracle Worker” this spring, directed by Charles Killen. Good news: The play retains all of its charm and emotional power. For those new to the show, it’s the classic story of famed deaf-and-blind author and activist Helen Keller, and the woman who first opened up the world to her, her teacher and long-time companion Annie Sullivan. Gibson’s telling of the story recounts the few weeks during which Annie first met and took on the challenge of bringing the child Helen out of the prison imposed by her blocked senses. The success of any production of “The Miracle Worker” rests mostly on the onstage chemistry between the
