That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. If you are a regular listener of the podcast you know we love to discover interesting stories by authors you have never heard of, and that's exactly what we have for you today. Here's what Fantastic Universe had to say, “Mr. Hunter's superb art work has appeared on a baker's dozen science fiction magazine covers during the past year, but incredible as it may seem with this story we introduce him to the reading public for the first time as a science fiction writer. We say incredible, because this is not a beginner's story. It is sparkling, sophisticated, erudite—the work of a craftsman.”This is the first time we have come across an illustrator turned author. And here's the amazing thing, he wasn't any old illustrator, Mel Hunter was a very accomplished illustrator producing illustrations for famous science fiction authors Isaac Asimov and Robert A. Heinlein, as well as a technical and scientific illustrator for The Pentagon, Hayden Planetarium in Boston, and the Massachusetts Audubon Society.Hunter was born in 1927 in Oak Park, Illinois and he taught himself book and magazine illustration. He was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Professional Artist in 1960, 1961 and 1962. He became a technical illustrator at Northrop Aircraft where he painted illustrations of advanced aircraft and simulated combat scenarios. His love of air and space took him from California's desert runways to Florida's seacoast launchpads to illustrate every variety of jet-age aircraft and space-age rocket imaginable—from the X-15 to Saturn V. He died in 2004 and according to his final wish, his cremated remains were launched into space on May 22, 2012.Savor this story, immerse yourself in it, and listen to it as many times as your heart desires—for it stands alone, as the singular science fiction story ever penned by Mel Hunter. Classic Ghost Stories

Subscriber-only episodeWilliam Frederick Temple (9 March 1914 – 15 July 1989) was a British science fiction writer, best known for his novel "Four-Sided Triangle."Born in Woolwich in 1914, Temple's early career included working as a clerk in the London Stock Exchange. His passion for science fiction led him to become an active member of the Science Fiction Association and the British Interplanetary Society.During World War II, Temple served as a field artillery signaller. After the war, he resumed his writing career, publishing "Four-Sided Triangle" in 1949, which was later adapted into a film in 1953.Though he found success with some novels and series, such as the "Martin Magnus" series for young readers, Temple eventually returned to full-time employment in 1957 due to financial constraints. His last novel, "The Fleshpots of Sansato" (1968), marked the end of his writing career. He died in 1989."The Whispering Gallery" is one of Temple's intriguing short stories, first published in "Fantastic Universe" in October 1953. The story is set in the Whispering Gallery at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, a location famous for its unique acoustic phenomenon that allows whispers to be heard across the room. The story has been included in various anthologies and collections, such as "65 Great Tales of Horror" edited by Mary Danby."The Whispering Gallery" by R.F. Temple is a haunting tale set within the eerie confines of St. Paul's Cathedral's Whispering Gallery. The story masterfully weaves an atmospheric setting, rich with symbolism and intrigue. The golden ball atop the cathedral, symbolizing innocence and obsession, becomes a beacon of desire for the young protagonist, Frederick. Themes of innocence, fear, and the supernatural are explored with subtlety, creating a tension that drives the narrative. However, the story's pacing might feel uneven, and the characters, particularly Frederick's mother and the guide, could benefit from more depth and development. The supernatural elements in the story add a layer of complexity and intrigue. The ghostly figure and the haunting voice in the Whispering Gallery create a sense of dread and terror, playing on primal fears. The cathedral's history and the recurring ghostly events suggest a cyclical nature of time and history, where the past continues to haunt the present. Yet, some readers might find the ending and the supernatural aspects confusing or underexplained, and the connection between the historical and supernatural aspects could be clarified. In conclusion, "The Whispering Gallery" is an engaging and thought-provoking read that effectively uses its setting and supernatural elements to create suspense and horror. The golden ball's symbolism, reflecting the danger of unchecked curiosity and obsession, adds depth to the story. While the character development and clarity in some areas could be enhanced, the story's exploration of innocence, obsession, and fear, along with its rich symbolism, make it a memorable piece of horror fiction. The allure of the unknown and unattainable, embodied in the golden ball, leads the protagonist to his doom, offering a chilling commentary on human desire and the dark corners of the human psyche.New Patreon RequestBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! The Repairman by Harry Harrison audiobook. This is a collection of 3 of Harry Harrison marvelous early stories that were published in Galaxy, Analog and Fantastic Universe. The Repairman (1958) is a straight fun SF story of a man getting a job done. It is most typical of his later style in series like the Stainless Steel Rat; Toy Shop (1962), a short piece exploring bureaucratic blindness and one ingenious way around it and The Velvet Glove (1956), my favorite for its writing style, fun perspective, sly social commentary on the scene in 1956 and just plain delightful imagination. And he manages to pack excitement and mystery in at the same time.

This week, the plan was for Tony and the host of Genuine Chit Chat and Star Wars Comics in Cannon, Mike Burton, the official ICS Mark Russell guest of record to talk about Mark's scathing, hysterical political satire, The Flintsones. The Flintstones, Vol. 1 by Mark Russell (Goodreads Author), Steve Pugh (Illustrations) Fred and Barney reunite for Mark Russell's modern take on Hanna-Barbera's most famous stone-age family! This new series starring the first family of Bedrock (and civilization, really) tells the story of who we are and why we do what we do as if it all began with Fred, Wilma, Barney, Betty, and the rest of the citizens of Bedrock. Shining a light on humanity's ancient customs and institutions in a funny origin story of human civilization, Mark Russell (PREZ) blends modern interpretations with Hanna-Barbera's classic character's, bringing a breath of fresh stone-age air. Hanna-Barbera has created some of the most recognizable animated characters of all time. As part of DC Comics' re-imagination of cartoons like Scooby-Doo, The Flintsones, Johnny Quest, Space Ghost, and Wacky Racers, these new series will be infused with modern and contemporary concepts while keeping the heart and soul of the classic animation. Chin also co-owned a comic book store, Comic Castle, and worked on several other comics, including Overload, Comics Review, Cracked, The Telegraph Wire, The Comic Buyer's Guide, Enchanter, Stargate, Choke and Strip Tease. He actually gave his phone number out in the second issue of ARBBH and invited fans to call him. His early influences were Charles Schultz, Berke Breathed, Gary Larson, and Woody Allen. He often appears in the ARBBH comics as himself. He is usually portrayed as a slight, neat figure in comparison with the disheveled Parsonavich. Timothy Hunter may be destined to become the most powerful magician in the universe, but he's still a London teenager, and having magical abilities is about to turn his world upside down... From award-winning writer Kat Howard, the Books of Magic series will captivate your interest from the start! Timothy Hunter is destined to be the world's most powerful magician--at least, that's what he's been told. In the meantime, though, he's just a regular teenager trying to deal with distant parents, school bullies, and adolescent crushes--and magic isn't helping with any of it. The forces of the supernatural seem to have it in for him. There are more than a few shadowy figures who will stop at nothing to eliminate what they see as a deadly threat to the balance of power--and those are the good guys. In order for Tim to survive long enough to fulfill his destiny, he'll have to learn how to control his burgeoning abilities as well as figure out whom he can trust--and who wants him dead. This journey of discovery begins with a new teacher named Ms. Rose, a homeless woman named Mad Hettie, and an owl named Yo-Yo--and it will lead him from suburban London straight to the heart of the Dreaming. However, most of the superheroes in the series' universe are corrupted by their celebrity status and often engage in reckless behavior, compromising the safety of the world. The story follows a small clandestine CIA squad, informally known as “The Boys“, led by Butcher and also consisting of Mother's Milk, the Frenchman, the Female, and new addition “Wee” Hughie Campbell, who are charged with monitoring the superhero community, often leading to gruesome confrontations and dreadful results; in parallel, a key subplot follows Annie “Starlight” January, a young and naive superhero who joins the Seven, the most prestigious – and corrupted – superhero group in the world and The Boys‘ most powerful enemies.
