Make Synchronicity an Everyday Occurrence

Synchronicities are the signposts that lead us forward and, if you've been listening for the last few weeks, you'll know that moving forward is something of a current theme here. However, normally, synchronicities are something of a hit and miss affair and, if we were to wait on the next one or two, we could be waiting some time. In any event, synchronicities tend to happen when least expected - something that we explore anecdotally in this episode.. And, yet, synchronicity is happening all the time - you just have to awake, alert, tuned in with eyes and heart wide-open to spot this everyday phenomenon.Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that big shifts will happen in your life everyday but, then again, synchronicities come in all shapes and sizes and, as we said in this podcast a few weeks ago, our lives don't leap forward in major headlines, our lives change in the small print of the heres and nows of everyday life. So, what can we do to encourage everyday synchronicity? How can we encounter everyday synchronicity if they tend to occur when least expected? We'll answer the second one first because it's easy… expect the unexpected - by turning up to the here and now you'll be tuned in enough to notice the unexpected for what it really is.More to the point, if synchronicity “just happens” (a phrase you'll often have heard me use), what can we do to encourage the “process” - can we even play a part in it?The answer to these questions is the same as the first one. When we turn up to the here and now, when we're present, our presence attracts synchronicity into our moment-to-moment experience of life.Put another way, when we're in Flow, we co-create synchronicity in harmony with the always responsive Universal Flow. That's what this episode is all about and, as always, as you listen you'll pick up the simple things that you need to do to create and attract the synchronicities that will start changing your life… today.

Ep. 80 - The Deer Are NOT Alright: Chronic Wasting Disease

The Field Guides

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 30, 2026

Something's not right in the woods, at least if you're a white-tailed deer. In this episode, the guys dig into chronic wasting disease (CWD), a strange illness reshaping deer populations in many areas of the Lower 48 (and Scandinavia!). It's not caused by a virus or a bacteria, but it is related to mad cow disease. They break down what it is, how it spreads, what's happening inside infected animals, and why it's so dang hard to contain. The deer are not alright… and there's a reason. This episode was recorded on April 23, 2026 at Walton Woods Park in Amherst, NY (a suburb of Buffalo). Episode Notes and Links· Are there different CWD strains in a single animal? Chronic wasting disease isn't a single, uniform pathogen. It's more like a shifting swarm. Infected deer can carry multiple prion “strains” at once, meaning different misfolded shapes of the same protein that behave in slightly different ways. They could spread through the body differently, build up in different tissues, and cause disease at different rates. Lab experiments show this most clearly: when CWD prions are passed through model systems, what looks like one strain can split into multiple distinct variants, or reveal that a mixed population was there all along (e.g., Angers et al. 2010 PNAS; Béringue et al. 2012 Journal of Virology; Li et al. 2010 Journal of Virology). In actual deer, the picture is harder to pin down, but studies comparing prions from different tissues and individuals show real strain diversity and suggest that more than one strain can exist within a single animal (e.g., Angers et al. 2009 Journal of Virology; Moore et al. 2016 Emerging Infectious Diseases). The takeaway is that CWD behaves less like a single disease agent and more like a moving target: a cloud of protein shapes, some dominant, some hidden in the background, that can shift over time, giving the disease more chances to adapt, persist, and potentially jump into new hosts.· Does repeated exposure to CWD reduce incubation time in deer? Repeated exposure to CWD prions does likely shortens incubation time, mainly because prion diseases are strongly dose-dependent. Higher cumulative exposure, whether from a single large dose or many smaller ones over time, can both increase the chance of infection and accelerate disease progression. Experimental studies in deer and elk show that animals exposed to higher or repeated doses tend to develop symptoms faster than those exposed once at low levels. In the wild, this likely plays out through repeated contact with contaminated environments like soil, plants, and carcass sites. That said, factors like genetics and prion strain can still influence how quickly the disease develops in any given animal.· Is CWD the only prion disease that affects wildlife? CWD is the only prion disease currently thriving as a self-sustaining epidemic in wild populations. The others mostly sit at the edges and are livestock diseases that occasionally spill into wildlife or appear in captive/wild interface cases. For example, scrapie occasionally “leaks” into the wild (it has been found in bighorn sheep), but it doesn't take over. It flickers at the edges of livestock systems. Nothing like the landscape-level, self-sustaining spread we see with CWD. That's what makes CWD so concerning: it's not just present in wildlife, it seems to be built for it.· Steve talked about the possibility of vampire bats and wild hogs spreading CWD. What's the story? There's currently no evidence that vampire bats are spreading CWD, but the wild hog story has gotten more interesting recently. Blood-feeding bats like the Common Vampire Bat (Desmodus rotundus) are often mentioned because prions can occur in blood at low levels, but there are no peer-reviewed studies showing bat-mediated transmission, nor any field patterns linking bats to CWD spread. So the bat idea remains speculative. Wild hogs (Sus scrofa), on the other hand, have moved beyond pure theory. A recent peer-reviewed study (e.g., Soto et al. 2025 Emerging Infectious Diseases) detected low levels of CWD prion activity in free-ranging pigs in endemic areas, suggesting they can pick up and carry prions after scavenging infected carcasses. Combine this with earlier work showing prions can survive digestion and still remain infectious (e.g., Nichols et al. 2009 PLoS ONE), it all points to hogs as plausible mechanical vectors: in other words, organisms that can move infectious material without necessarily developing the disease themselves. The takeaway: vampire bats are still a biologically interesting but unsupported idea, while wild hogs are emerging as potential “messy middlemen,” capable of redistributing prions across the landscape, even if they're not a primary engine of CWD transmission, which is still driven by deer-to-deer contact and long-lived environmental contamination.· Why doesn't NYS do more free testing?New York doesn't offer broad, free testing for every deer. Not because it's ignoring CWD, but because it uses a more targeted, strategic approach. There are a few key constraints on broad, free testing:Cost & logistics: Each test isn't just a swab. It involves lab processing (often PCR or amplification assays), trained staff, and sample handling. Scaling that to hundreds of thousands of deer is a major lift.Low prevalence (right now): When disease prevalence is near zero, mass testing tends to return very few positives, so agencies prioritize early detection in hotspots instead.Management strategy: Agencies often invest more in prevention (carcass transport rules, feeding bans, education) than broad surveillance.Hunter participation: “Free for all” testing can overwhelm systems unless tightly managed, and many states have learned that targeted programs get better data per dollar. So NYS is focusing its efforts on where they see it mattering most: high-risk areas, roadkills, sick/dead deer, and zones near known outbreaks—because testing every hunter-harvested deer statewide would be extremely expensive for relatively low yield in a state with no established CWD population.More info on NY's response, as well as what's happening nationally:The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation's page on CWD (including information on how you can help, scroll down to “Members of the Public”)CWD in Captive Deer: DEC's Response in 2024Chronic Wasting Disease Detection and Management: What Has Worked and What Has Not? Philippe Pinel remarked in 1800 that "It is an art of no little importance to administer medicines properly, but it is an art of much greater and more difficult acquisition to know when to suspend or altogether to omit them." This insight remains profoundly relevant today, especially in hospice care, where inappropriate prescribing is a common issue. Studies show that 20%–70% of hospice patients receive at least one unnecessary medication near the end of life, including drugs like antihypertensives, statins, and vitamins. In this episode of the GeriPal Podcast, we tackle the pressing topic of deprescribing at the end of life with expert guests Jennifer Tjia, Jon Furuno, and Simon Mooijaart. The conversation focuses on identifying medications that should almost always be discontinued—such as statins, osteoporosis meds, finasteride, and vitamins, which offer minimal benefit for patients with limited life expectancy. We also delve into more nuanced cases, such as antithrombotics, which present complex decisions that challenge clinicians, particularly when prognosis spans the many weeks to months range. Finally, we explore practical strategies for engaging patients and families in deprescribing conversations. Our guests highlight tools such as the FRAME mnemonic (Focus on the goals of care, Review current medications, Assess each medication's risk/benefit, Minimize the medication burden, and Evaluate regularly) and the Goal Concurrent Prescribing tool, which helps ensure medication decisions align with patients' values and end-of-life priorities. At the edge of the Canadian wilderness, where fog-drenched asphalt disappears into endless forest, the night shift is supposed to be silent. Uneventful. Predictable. But tonight, a lone border officer discovers that some travelers don't arrive by road…and some questions shouldn't be asked. In this eerie, slow-burn mystery from author Robert J. Bradshaw, a quiet outpost becomes the stage for something far stranger than contraband or suspicious paperwork. Reality bends, the familiar grows untrustworthy, and one man's routine shift spirals into a chilling encounter with the impossible. With Drew Blood guiding you through the darkness with his trademark grit and wit, this episode will leave you watching the shadows of the highway a little differently—and wondering what might be standing just beyond the reach of your headlights. A man stands on a railway bridge. Orders pass along the line; the river says nothing. A watch ticks, a breath stalls, and time begins to misbehave. Memory intrudes, desire bargains, and the world narrows to rope, water, distance. No fanfare; only procedure—and a mind trying to outrun it. Follow the story to its far edge. First published in 1890; collected in *Tales of Soldiers and Civilians* (1891). A condemned man stands on a railroad bridge, a noose around his neck, dreaming of escape. I'll share a short story that has been described as "one of the most famous and frequently anthologized stories in American literature" – it's “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by the legendary Ambrose Bierce, from 1890. I have a classic creepypasta from 2016 that many people mistakenly believe is a true story because it is so well written. It's “The Strange Case of Edmonson Kentucky” by Joe Terrell. But first, it's a short story of fiction as told by one of the hardest-working writers I know, as she is always posting new stories on Facebook: Christina Skelton. It's a story from April 2020 titled simply, “The Ghost Bus”.CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate)…00:00.00.000 = Show Open00:01:31.892 = “The Ghost Bus” by Christina Skelton00:11:29.476 = “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce * 00:34:43.528 = “The Strange Case of Edmonson, Kentucky” by Joe Terrell *01:02:22.710 = Show CloseSOURCES AND RESOURCES FROM THE EPISODE…“An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/uu4acekx“The Ghost Bus” by Christina Skelton: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/phupb8p4“The Strange Case of Edmonson, Kentucky” by Joe Terrell: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/sdtru243=====(Over time links may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. He loses consciousness and falls into the river below the bridge as the rope snapped. He awakens to a strong pain running through his body. Farquhar sees a light flash and fade before it grows brighter and he rises to the surface of the river. He is afraid that he will be shot by the northern forces as soon as he is spotted in the water, and makes an attempt to free his hands and neck from the rope. Once freed he finally breaks the surface of the water and inhales deeply and painfully. He looks to the bridge and sees his executioners standing on the bridge looking for him. A sentinel fires his rifle at him but misses, Farquhar notices his grey eyes through the sight of the gun. Farquhar then hears the lieutenant instructing his men to fire, so he dives under the water and swims with the current away from the bridge. A cannonball lands two feet away from him and he swims harder for the shore. He is spun round by the current and winds up on a gravelly bank out of site and range of the gunfire. He weeps with joy and takes in the beautiful landscape around him. He heads into the forest and follows a path, walking all day to his home. Time seems to pass without him noticing, and he rouses standing at his front gate. He makes his way towards his home and sees his wife come down the verandah to meet him. When he moves to embrace her, he feels a sharp pain in his neck and sees a blinding white light. Farquhar is dead. He is hanging at Owl Creek Bridge.

One day, while he and his wife sitting on their patio, a grey-clad soldier rode up to them and asked for a glass of water. The soldier appears to be a confederate. While his wife got some water, Farquhar asked some questions from the front and was informed by that the Northern forces took Owl Creek Bridge, and have repaired the railroad to prepare for an advance. Any civilian caught interfering with the Northern forces would be hanged. Farquhar asks how someone could help the southern forces, and the man replies that he could easily set fire to the driftwood in the area to burn the bridge down. The man then drinks his water and leaves, and we are informed that he was actually a Northern scout.

His wrists are bound and there is a rope tied around his neck. He is positioned on loose planks that have been made into a makeshift platform. Two army soldiers, a captain and a sergeant from the Northern Army are surrounding him. Farquhar observes the forest scene around him and takes in the army on the banks of the bridge while the men around him move to their final positions. Awaiting the captain's signal, the sergeant is about to step away to let Farquhar drop. Farquhar tries to stare into the water swirling below. He watches some driftwood get carried away by the slow water. He shuts his eyes to push away any visual distractions and tries to think of his family. He gets distracting by a ringing metal tone that seems to bang constantly, but slower and slower. Farquhar opens his eyes and tries to imagine himself freeing his hand and swimming away down the river to his family. These thoughts are barely realised before the captain nods and the sergeant steps off of the board.

IN THIS EPISODE: It's Thriller Thursday – and this week I'm bringing you three tales of fiction. It's a story from April 2020 titled simply, “The Ghost Bus”.YOUTUBE TIME STAMPS…00:00.00.000 = Introduction/Show Open00:02:08.463 = “The Ghost Bus” by Christina Skelton00:12:56.446 = “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce00:37:19.785 = “The Strange Case of Edmonson, Kentucky” by Joe TerrellSOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…“An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/uu4acekx“The Ghost Bus” by Christina Skelton: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/phupb8p4“The Strange Case of Edmonson, Kentucky” by Joe Terrell: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/sdtru243Weird Darkness theme by Alibi Music Library. = = = = =(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. Instead of using a script and actors, the host simply reads short stories by authors like Edgar Allen Poe and Ambrose Bierce. The show broadcast from 1963 to 1967 on WKCR. At the end of each show, the host attributed the shows production to King's Crown Radio.00:00:00.000 = INTRO00:01:55.012 = Born Of Man And Woman00:11:20.546 = Ghost Hunt00:27:02.173 = Moonlight Sonata00:35:43.448 = Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge00:58:54.718 = Oil of Dog01:09:33.209 = The Boarded Window01:21:39.388 = The Cone01:42:08.694 = The Hornet01:53:49.273 = The Masque of the Red Death02:09:06.006 = The Pit And The Pendulum02:39:30.719 = The Tell Tale Heart02:54:52.998 = Torture By Hope03:10:25.670 = Was It A DreamSOURCES AND ESSENTIAL WEB LINKS…This episode is sponsored by http://RadioArchives.comWeird Darkness Retro Radio theme by Storyblocks.= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = ="I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness." — John 12:46Find out how to escape eternal darkness at https://weirddarkness.com/eternaldarknessWeirdDarkness® - is a registered trademark. Sure, TV had pictures to go along with the stories, but putting those pictures on the air involved a highly technical and expensive technology, and by the time those images reached the audience they were grainy, blurry, and sometimes nearly impossible to see. One actor could play different parts on several different radio programs, even in a single episode, but once they were seen in a TV show their face was recognizable enough that they had a hard time working on another show, and even a twenty-second appearance meant hours in makeup and wardrobe. Appearing in a radio drama required just a couple rehearsals and then remaining as quiet as possible in the studio, following along in the script until time to perform your lines, which you also read from the script. There was one important thing that television could offer over radio work; money. The accounting in TV and radio was fundamentally different. A radio program was usually paid for by a single sponsor while commercial time on TV shows was sold piecemeal, but there was still a phenomenal amount of money involved in TV production and the networks and sponsors were happy to pay it. Unable to compete with the huge amount of money being spread around by TV, after the final broadcasts of Suspense and Yours Truly Johnny Dollar on September 30, 1960, the Golden Age of Radio came to an end.Or did it?In the decade after the end of the Golden Age of Radio, TV matured artistically and technically. There had been a rejection by the networks of "rural" programming which helped launch a nostalgia craze. This craze began with the release of George Lucas's American Graffiti (1973), and suddenly everything old seemed new again. One of the genres which were best suited to radio was the horror shows which made listeners sit up in bed and pull the sheets over their heads. This sort of program had been pioneered Wyliss Cooper and Arch Oboler on Lights Out as well as The Whistler, Suspense, and Inner Sanctum Mysteries. This was the type of show creators decided upon for his radio nostalgia project, which became The CBS Radio Mystery Theater. They were convinced that there was enough interest from those who had heard similar shows growing up during the Golden Age, but the show built a following of younger fans for whom radio drama was a new and exciting experience. In many ways, CBSRMT was more like a TV program on the radio than a typical Old Time Radio show. The shows were taped rather than broadcast live, which allowed for greater post-production editing and creative control. The scripts generally ran 45 minutes, and the action was broken at points to allow for separately produced commercials and news bulletins to be inserted. The opening featured the "creaking door" effect which had been part of The Inner Sanctum. Host E.G. Marshall was never as campily creepy earlier horror hosts, but his closing, "Until next time, pleasant… dreams?" was sure to inspire nightmares.Production of CBSRMT was efficient almost to the point of cheapness. Creators drew upon radio row veterans working in New York as well as up-and-coming television personalities. The show used original stories from a wide variety of genres as well as literary classics. Writers were paid a flat $350 for each recorded script, and actors received union scale rates of $73.92 per episode. The actors would come into the studio for an initial script reading at 9:00 am, and the episode was generally completed by noon. Paychecks were handed out and the tape would be edited in the afternoon.00:00:00.000 = INTRO00:01:54.482 = The Bleeding Statue (May 23, 1974)00:46:21.986 = Mirror For Murder (May 27, 1974)01:30:27.244 = The Phantom Lullaby (May 29, 1974)02:14:39.905 = Dressed To Kill (May 30, 1974)02:59:05.145 = To Kill With Confidence (June 03, 1974)03:43:09.434 = An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge (June 04, 1974)04:27:15.215 = Darling Deadly Dolores (June 06, 1974)SOURCES AND ESSENTIAL WEB LINKS…This episode is sponsored by http://RadioArchives.comWeird Darkness Retro Radio theme by Storyblocks.= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = ="I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness." — John 12:46Find out how to escape eternal darkness at https://weirddarkness.com/eternaldarknessWeirdDarkness® - is a registered trademark.
