Another terrific artist took the time to chat with me! Fine Art Ceramist Patricia Griffin and I explored several topics in this podcast. We explored her transition to becoming a full-time artist. Her transition to opening a public space and becoming a retail shop owner. And we took a journey into her most recent and equally profound career changes. Along the way, you will hear some smart business and marketing concepts and you can easily apply them directly to your art business. And it is all told, in this quick 45-minute podcast, with the depth and clarity I expected from this very smart and successful artist. Head's Up! You MUST listen to the very end because there is a super-duper marketing tip that shows up that I hope will be the key to your future success. I may have over-used the word brilliant towards the end of the podcast, but that won't stop me from saying one more time: This woman is BRILLIANT! Patricia's undeniable talent will be available for all of us to own very soon! Join her list! But first, listen and learn. Whatever your art form, this interview will bring you value and help you "Find Loving Homes for Your Art!" Then, please share your thoughts below! Don't miss an episode! And... What is it for? Well, well, well. A series of clicks found me re-visiting an amazing talk by Seth Godin. It's from December of 2017, but it's still so relevant today. And, it will be just as relevant two or twenty years from now. Its impact cannot be overstated. Watching the YouTube video again, I was overwhelmed with a new sense of MY purpose. I found myself thinking of all the artists I have helped, mentored, coached, and hugged (real and virtually) over the years. And I was reminded that I am a cheerleader and an optimist. I really believe that art changes people's lives. So this podcast is my "response" to Seth. I can sum it up: Art Matters. Artists Matter. But the big takeaway for me is: I matter to artists. Bold? Yep! I am boldly filling this week's podcast with extra Aloha and even more ways to Find Loving Homes for Your Art. I do this by believing in "My Golden Words" and remembering all the artists I have made a difference for. Please listen and then bring your thoughts to the comments. Is there more that I can do? What more would you like from me? Have I helped you? In what ways? Please share your stories! As promised here is the link to Seth Godin's amazing talk (I left out the fact that he is very funny and you will LOL more than a few times watching him!) And join the Artist Family of Subscribers!
Make Love Not War 'Tis the season for people to start lining up and deciding to take a stance in our whacky world of politics. It's getting louder and harder to remain ignorant of all the goings-on. And, we all have the freedom to speak our minds. But this week's podcast is sending you a warning siren. When you are in business, you are in "polite company" everywhere you post. Spend eleven minutes now and Find Loving Homes for Your Art without risking alienating anyone but still remaining authentic. Like the podcast? Want to know when it's released? Want to sell more art?
Got Brand? The concept of a "brand" can be nebulous. On the face of it having an identifiable brand might seem all about corporate/big business. Yes, the major "brands" have that look and feel and strong ties to giant marketing machines, but artists need to have a branded look, too. And they can really become more human by giving branding some space in their business. In today's 11-minute podcast, I will let you in on a few secrets to help you tweak your branding and fine-tune your public-facing information. From your website to your social media and even in your in-person events and art shows, you will connect more quickly and be more memorable if you pay attention to your branding. It's another piece of the puzzle that will help you Find Loving Homes for Your Art. I suspect that there will be some questions and I look forward to your comments as always! Enjoy! Get on my list! It's where special things happen!
SQUIRREL! I can't really explain how my squirrely mind came up with this podcast, but I think you will come away with a new point of view. And hopefully, some strong connections that will lead to you finding loving homes for your art. Bottom line: I want you to find your inner squirrel and become one with that energy. Without further ado: And, while you listen, please join my list. Become a VIA - a Very Important Artist!
Are you too sexy for your car?* This is bound to be a controversial podcast, but that's never stopped me in the past. I know that some people will thank me, but some will shun me. I am talking very frankly in this week's episode. I try to always bring the honest and most intentionally created words I can, but this time I may have created a monster. Very interested in your comments. My hope is for some strong dialog on this very important and overlooked issue. *Lyric from the song released in 1992 (coincidentally the same year my jewelry business started. Go figure!) called "I'm too sexy" by Right Said Fred My jewelry means I stay neutral in appearance.
Where's the PROOF?! Recently, I decided to explore a platform that has a huge user-base that I want to connect with: Instagram. There is such a huge community of artists and makers using that platform and I finally felt compelled to join in the fray. I even popped for a very intensive course from "The Instagram Expert" aka Sue B. Zimmerman. So for the past few months, I have been focused on getting my "grid" figured out along with trying to see what it takes to get traction on this very dynamic tool. I have barely scratched the surface. As usual, the marketing puzzle is three dimensional. However, as I actively explore the ins and outs of Instagram, I have discovered a very discouraging truth: the vast majority of artists I see there are not selling their art. And since my podcast is called, "Find Loving Homes for Your Art", I felt it is my duty to yell at you all in this week's episode. There are remedies! I don't know why it's so foreign an idea to say (in the bio even!) that your creations are available to buy. And why your hashtags don't reach out to #designers #artgalleries #artcollectors #homefurnishings #artforwalls and so on (and on and on). And what size is that doggie in the window? I know you all think you have "good" excuses for being so shy, so feel free to put those in the comments. For those of you who are just plain unsure: get over it. For examples of some smart art marketers, these stand out as artists who are front and center and ready for you to buy from them in a few clicks. @rebeccavincentart @fionapurdypetportraits (her work is 100% commission so she has no "shopping cart") @hannah_seasnailstudio @patriciagriffinceramics (this clever lady has a very different approach to "shopping" cart sales) Anyway... this podcast is actually a little late in being published because I spent WAY too much time trying to find examples among my own followers who were actually actively selling via Instagram. After over an hour... I gave up! Listen to this podcast and ask yourself: Is your art for sale? Don't miss even one episode. Join my list!
The Cat's Out of the Bag! In this week's podcast, just 17 minutes long, you are going to get the secret sauce: the ingredients AND the recipe that I rarely share. These Five Words are the key teachings of my guidebook. But don't think you are off the hook. Just because this podcast episode is revealing the Five Words that are the "Five E's of Selling" from the "E's of Selling Art System", you still need to have the real deal in your life. And while I urge you to purchase the guidebook if you haven't yet, this podcast (and the link below to a related blog post) will give you some serious homework to do. Hey! If you own the "system", you need to read it (or re-read it), study the principles it embraces, dig deep into the workbooks, and carry the flashcards everywhere so you can Find Loving Homes for Your Art. Meanwhile...got your paper and pencils ready? Good. When you are done listening, please let me know: which of the Five E's is most challenging for you? And, why is it challenging? Get ready to think! LINK mentioned: This article is from a couple of years ago, but I had forgotten how informative it is! It's even got a super cool download. Check it out! AND...meanwhile, if you think you need the art system, you can buy it here or learn more here. And if you haven't done it yet, please join my VIA (Very Important Artists) list.
Are your prices too high or too low? Goldilock's principles rarely work in the art industry. There is no such thing as just right when it comes to pricing art. It's an art form all on its own. At the same time, if you stray too far in either direction, you will struggle to make sales. But what you might not realize is that you will struggle more if you underprice your work then if you overprice it. And that concept is what is covered in this week's episode. Please share your thoughts in the comments. Pick a question or answer them all. Do you think you have the right prices? And if so, why? How did you arrive at your prices? When was the last time you raised your prices? What is your biggest challenge with getting a proper livelihood from your artistic endeavors? As promised, here's a quick look at my work. Can you guess what is priced at $26 and what is priced at $275?
Don't let the title scare you! And don't let your fears get in the way of Finding Loving Homes for Your Art. In this week's episode, we are going to face those little nagging doubts and even some of the big scary fears that get in the way of you believing in yourself. In many ways, this is what several of the other episodes have nibbled at around the edges. The nibbling is over. I am taking a big bite out of these omnipresent sales-dampening fears and giving you an attitude adjustment. Stick around to the end where there is a special bit of counseling. It's a virtual hug that centers around the word "important" and puts it into a whole new category of importance. Enjoy... and let me know you "got this". This one is a little extra personal for me. We have all been there We had a great bonding. It was clear that they loved the work. It was clear that money was not an issue. It was obvious that they were going to own your art. They seemed on the brink of saying yes and suddenly, they just don't. AND...As they walk away... Your mind is racing. You are genuinely confused. You were SURE that this was a sale about to happen at any moment. In the E's of Selling Art System Guidebook, there is a page that I included for just this scenario. And for anyone who has not yet made the small investment, I am treating you to the information on that page. And in the links under the podcast player, you will see a special offer. It's long overdue that many of you reading this just go ahead and become an owner of the guidebook, don't ya think? All is not lost You can make this work, I promise. Start by grabbing paper and pen. I was overwhelmed and re-energized (again) by watching an interview by Marie Forleo with a totally rocking dance phenom by the name of Amanda LaCount. I tossed aside my prepared notes and just took all that emotion and put it into this episode. I hope you get emotional, too. I hope you will share, too. I have links below as promised. But as always: listen first! Leap away later! The Marie Foleo interview with Amanda LaCount. That (awesome) Seven-year-old! (My first podcast, too!) Takeaway: You are so important.
Special Attention Required! On the heels of the last podcast, there were some deep conversations and a great comment that added even more dimension to the whole discussion of creating better first contact engagement. And it was obvious that I was concentrating on a single visitor which leads me to today's podcast. When two people, who are in some way sharing their lives and/or their living spaces, approach you and your work, the rules of engagement are much more complicated. Even if one of them is just a good friend, there can be some complex dynamics that run through your time together. I tell two tales in this podcast. One about love found and one about love lost. I think you will enjoy them both. Sharing Required! Comments... oh, you know I want your comments this time. This is such a twisted and explosive subject. I think you have some experiences to share this week. Enjoy! And listen for a special invitation at the end of the podcast. (and I practically beg for you all to go to iTunes and give me a high-five, please!)
Confusion Dilutes Passion It can feel awkward, even uncomfortable, to allow someone a little time and space to become visually acquainted with your oeuvre. Whatever your medium, it's full of stories, full of energy, and full of your spirit. Your art is the product of your unique techniques, special preparations, and your singular artful approach to design and your point-of-view. It's your passion and you want to share it. That's part of why you are showing it to the public, right? But what do they really need to know? How much should you share and when and how should you share it? I answer these and more questions in this episode of "Find Loving Homes for Your Art". The Yin and the Yang It's quite natural to want to tell everyone as much as possible as quickly as possible so they will "get it" and "get you". And hopefully, if they learn enough about you and what makes you tick, they will buy a piece of your creative work. But, as usual, it's a balancing act. And in the beginning, you can upset that delicate balance as they are becoming tuned-in to your work for the first time. And so, in this episode, I am encouraging you to bite your tongue. To be patient. And, as always, I give you some practical ideas on how to do that and what to say and when to say it. Listen to this episode to discover how you can maximize your effectiveness in those first few moments. The bottom line is: Too much sharing can lead to overwhelm and that can kill sales. It's all about timing and that ever-present E from the E's of Selling Art System: Empathy. Enjoy! And please share in the comments. I want to hear your thoughts, ideas, and questions! What's your medium and how does this apply to your presentation? Here is a corresponding blog post that you might want to read (in silence - LOL!).
All is not lost Last week's podcast stirred up some off-site conversations. But one brave soul did put her thoughts into the comments and got me to thinking. Thanks for stirring up the hornet's nest, Jennifer! You inspired this podcast. And so I am tackling the issue from another angle in this week's chat. If the mojo isn't fully in gear, what can you do to make sure you can still "Find Loving Homes for Your Art"? And, those of you who own the "E's of Selling Art System" will recognize some of this rant's origins. This should serve as an additional reminder to all artists. Remember: if they could they would. To that, I add, "when they can they will (if they remember you)". Hope this helps! Let me know in the comments what you do or plan to do to recapture the mojo. Show notes Surely this episode will cause you to re-think those business cards? Listen to "Hide Your Business Cards EP 14" Is it finally time to purchase the "E's of Selling Art System"? Are you dampening your sales by (accidentally) dampening your empathy? As many of you reading this already know, empathy is the foundation of selling anything and everything. Aside from how valuable your empathy is during a presentation of your art, without empathy in our everyday lives, this would be a very odd world to live in. Empathy is the glue that binds society in general. It's vital to civility and fosters generosity and compassion. Without empathy, we would be a lifeless zombie nation. So it's mildly concerning to read recent, well-respected, studies that suggest we may be living in a less empathic world today. According to researchers, a common over-the-counter drug deeply dampens our ability to empathize. An estimated 23% of all US adults consume this drug during an average week. (OMG! Is this the actual zombie apocalypse? LOL) So why am I sounding the alarm? What does this have to do with your ability to Find Loving Homes for Your Art? If you are taking this drug, it could be killing your sales. Here's the real conundrum There is no way to know if you have a lowered empathic response. Think about it. How could you know if you are feeling less empathetic? Just that fact alone requires us to rethink if this is the right drug to take before a show or event. Or before that first date! So listen up! Because your art deserves an empathetically engaged and connected spirit in order to find those loving homes and recognize and empathize with those deserving collectors. I look forward to your comments! See links below the player for more in-depth information. I am so fortunate to have been able to interview Patricia Coulter. I had always enjoyed her work, but now that I know the "rest of the story", I am also somewhat in awe of her talent as a businesswoman, too. This "Bonus" podcast is filled with inspiration, tips for success, and much more. There is not much I can add here. This episode is going to make a mark on all who listen. I have links below the player (on my website). Listen first and then go check-out other valuable parts of Patricia's world.
In order to gain and maintain trust, it is critically important (remember that all-important word, empathy?) that you understand "Your Buyer's Journey". Every buyer goes through three stages with virtually every purchase. The more connected you are the more trust you build. The more you can show them you are on the same path emotionally and logistically as they move from stage to stage, the more likely they will trust your motives and their instincts to purchase. Remember this: If they could (buy), they would (buy). And while it is up to them to decide, your role as an advisor and empathetic cheerleader is crucial to help them remain focused and comfortable through the journey. Understanding which stage they are in and what that requires from you makes all the difference. Don't forget to like me on iTunes with a quick rating! And then come back here and answer this question: Which stage is easiest for you to connect with?
Despite the title, this is not about politics. No, this is about something called "implicit bias" and its effect on your ability to find loving homes for your art. This podcast might just be one of my favorites. It takes you on a very twisted road and (hopefully) creates a sale where one might never have happened had you stayed on your normal path. And here's the bonus: If you adopt the ideas and the attitude I suggest here, I can just about guarantee you will make more sales. And after you have heard this episode, I would like to know: Have you ever "accidentally" made a sale? Enjoy! And Please Share!
What? Hide what? What in the world? Okay. I get it. Seems odd. So, you will need to listen to learn why this is "a thing" and why I am recommending you take this under deep consideration. Of course, some of you may not need to hide your website, but you still need to listen to how to handle the very delicate situation discussed in this week's episode and why you could be losing sales. Hint: Your website is not always valuable for selling your art. Enough said... listen and then please add your comments! This podcast is now available on many apps! iTunes, Spotify, SoundCloud, GooglePlay, and IHeart. Of course, I always want your thoughts and ideas, so listen anywhere, but please come here to share when you are inspired by the podcasts.
Oprah recently shared her mantra at a commencement speech. Not her mission statement, not a slogan, not a tag-line, but her mantra. It's a powerful one! If you aren't sure what a mantra is, well... it's hard to replace that word with any other. A mantra is a statement that prompts deep reflection on a purposeful statement meant to move you into a state of calm and order. Some consider it a state of prayer, but I think it is even more than that. It's something I have relied on for years. I share one in the "E's of Selling Art System". I had several in my more formative years. But when I heard the commencement speech by Oprah, it struck me that I had lost track of my main mantra. I had a one-size-fits-all mantra for years, but I kind of lost track of it. When I thought about it, I realized that my mantra got "lost" because I didn't need it anymore. But I am pretty sure that I need one again. I think most of us will have an easier time in life with one than without one. So, I am digging around for another one. One that will stick and make a real impact when I summon it to my future moments of need. Getting it to stick is the key. Getting a statement to live and breathe into the deepest crevices of your mind, is key. Finding a mantra that you can count on to bring you to your "senses" is not only important, but it can also change your life around. I have several examples in this episode. So, what mantra did Oprah share at a 2019 commencement speech? "Everything is always working out for me." On its face, it's powerful, but I realized that, for me, it's not quite fitting where I am in my life. It would have been better during tougher times or times of great change, but my life (today) is very steady. Not perfect, but not scary or difficult. Nothing like what a college graduate might be going through. So...I don't "feel" the need for the power of that statement for my life at this time. And so, I bring my journey to this week's episode. I suggest you have your thinking cap pulled on tightly and try to remain as undistracted as possible. If you have a specific mantra that helps you - guides you through tough times - and are willing to share, please scroll to the comments and add your voice. Oh... and... you can have more than one! That's what I discovered along the way and that is what I share in the many examples in the podcast this week. And, yes...it will help you "Find Loving Homes for Your Art", too! Enjoy! Available wherever you listen to podcasts, but hopefully you will always return here to leave your valuable contributions in the comments.
This is one of the toughest things to do in face-to-face selling. However, when you understand your responsibility to your collectors or potential collectors, it becomes easier. When you remember the key mantra "It's all about them; it's not about you", you will find a feeling of comfort in exploring this foundational selling principle. This is another episode that probably deserves to be heard more than once. This is all about a subtle, almost invisible suggestion that is very important to include along the way during a presentation. I include several examples of the kinds of statements you might want to consider using - put into your own words, of course. I also beg for some help at the end of this podcast. So stay to the end so you can help me out. I just "need a little help from my friends" to borrow a phrase from Ringo Starr. Meanwhile - enjoy!
This episode is a bit of a departure. I have been fairly consistent in bringing you into the "system" - the E's of Selling Art System. A huge percentage of what I have discussed in the past 23 episodes (with the exception of the two interviews) has been based on that guidebook. But recently, especially with so many of you reaching out with questions that are not related to one-on-one selling best practices, I have started daydreaming about other helpful topics. And then, it hit me. I get so many questions thrown in my direction and even more so lately. So... I am going to answer three in particular that came in my inbox just this last week. How do I grow my email list? What is the best Social Media platform to use? Is the E's of Selling Art System available as a download? And here's one additional question I will answer right here and now: yes... there is still time (offer ends May 31st) to get your discount on the guidebook. Click here if you want to buy now and use the code: BUYNOW And listen closely this week: I will give you a very unexpected and rather compelling reason why even if you never sell face-to-face the E's of Selling Art System could really rock your studio world. Learn more here. (by the way...I don't do this kind of promotion very often, so it might be months before I do this again.) Okie Dokie! Enjoy the show! I look forward to seeing YOUR questions in the comments. ALOHA!
While many tell me that many of my podcasts serve up some inspirational and aspirational attitudes, this episode is full-blown cheerleader, coach, motivational speaker, and my best impression of a serious pep rally all rolled into one. If you take a moment to clear your mind and heart before you hit start, you cannot listen to this and not be moved. And if you are (and I sure hope you are), please be sure to put your thoughts in the comments. I want you to share - if you can - what kind of feelings this one brings to the surface for you. OH! And look for the two links under the player for the mentions in the podcast. Enjoy! Here's my art that I sell every single week at a show on Maui. (Sorry, I don't sell it online.) And here is the link to use with the discount code: BUYNOW
I have been wanting to do this for such a long time, but after several attempts, it never "felt" like I was getting it right. And then... well, just listen and you will see that I did some "extra" fancy things which made this a really useful podcast. And, it dawned on me that it's been a while since I had a special pricing offer on the E's of Selling Art System - Guidebook, Worksheets, and Flashcard Set and this podcast really inspired me to make that happen. If you already know how valuable the guidebook is, simply buy directly with this link. HOWEVER: You will need the discount code! And to get the code, you need to "earn" the discount I am offering by listening to the podcast for the promo code! (There is a separate and very special offer for foreign shipments.) I suspect that some of you will be shy and want to reach out to me personally to get a little extra coaching after you have faced the music. Please email me and let's work something out. With the summer art fair season just about to kick off, can you afford to miss an opportunity to find loving homes for your art? You all know by now that I am always ready to help you increase your selling skills. For anyone who is not feeling shy, please comment below! And, please share this page, and please feel free to put a quick Five Star Rating on iTunes. A short review on iTunes would be a cherry-on-top for me. This podcast is now available on many apps! iTunes, Spotify, SoundCloud, GooglePlay, and IHeart. Of course, I still want your comments, so listen anywhere, but please come here to share when you are inspired by the podcasts.
It seems I can never leave well-enough alone. I took another listen to last week's episode and I was compelled to do a little follow-up. So this is the nitty-gritty details you need to actually close the sale. This is a long overdue discussion. Dare I say it? This is possibly the most relevant of all the episodes. (I always think that though, so you be the judge!) It's definitely another 8 minutes that can change everything. Grab your earbuds! Aloha and enjoy! PS: Speaking of changing everything...I would love another review or two over on iTunes. Show me a little love, please? Share the love. Let's make sure other artists are Finding Loving Homes for Their Art, too! This podcast is now available on many apps! iTunes, Spotify, SoundCloud, GooglePlay, and IHeart. Of course, I still want your comments, so listen anywhere, but please come here to share when you are inspired by the podcasts.
People come into your world and view your art with a unique set of beliefs, self-awareness, desires, strategies, and attitudes to get them through the day. Helping them through the "Buyer's Journey" will be even easier when you learn the lessons in this podcast and find ways to match their steps along the path. In this quick little "reminder" episode, I am discussing intention, timing, and tone. Did they just ask if you accept credit cards? That question is informative, but it's even more informative depending on when it is asked, right? In this short but sweet episode, I am exploring the statements, questions, or comments that come your way in a typical engagement and presentation. I will put several common statements under my microscope. In the end, hopefully, you will see new ways of "hearing between the lines". It's just another part of helping you find loving homes for your art more naturally and authentically. So put on your Empathy Hat and enjoy! And as always, I would love your comments. What words or questions trigger you into action mode? This podcast is now available on many apps! iTunes, Spotify, SoundCloud, GooglePlay, and IHeart. Of course, I still want your comments, so listen anywhere, but please come here to share when you are inspired by the podcasts.
Now, just hear me out: As you start to listen to this podcast and before you judge this podcast as a waste of time, I want you to know that I am planning on creating a natural high for everyone who listens to this episode. And, how all of this leads to more sales. I know you want to find more loving homes for your art, so just take 9 mins to listen right now. And it all starts with puppies, kittens, and even babies. I dare you not to smile! NEWS: I got another review on iTunes! Thanks so much. And if ever there was a good episode to share, this must be it! Enjoy, share, and by all means, practice getting other people high today!
The basic principle is one that every Marketing 101 course would teach us, but as always - it's hard to figure out how to apply this concept to our artful objects. And it's even harder to figure out how to incorporate these basic principals in our presentations - both online and offline. Therefore, pay close attention to the examples in this podcast. Then get out your pencil and paper. This could be one of the more valuable tools to sharpen. Oh... and I made a mention that deserves a fuller story. My packaging for my jewelry is an example of a unique value that I have added to a buyer's list of reasons to buy. It's not unusual for me to sell multiple items to a single buyer who just can't resist the packaging and the story. My buyers know, that as gifts go, this is a big winner. Give everyone lots of reasons to buy and you will Find Loving Homes for Your Art! So take a listen and then share here in the comments: What are you doing to create that extra value? That WOW factor? IMPORTANT NEWS: This podcast is now available on many apps! I am still gathering all the icons! iTunes, Spotify, SoundCloud, GooglePlay, and IHeart. Of course, I still want your comments, so listen anywhere, but come here to share when you are inspired by the podcasts.
This is a mind-massage. This is mindfulness personified. The core exercise taught in this podcast will stimulate and exercise a set of mind/heart connections that will help you refine your thoughts and your message. This will help you explore your core and give you the tools to share your art with the world from a place of humble authenticity and undeniable integrity. This podcast is short, but the lesson here is lifelong. The super simple technique is something you can learn to use instantly. And you can use it as often as needed every day. (Kegles for the soul?) I expect very few comments. This is pretty personal stuff that I am suggesting you experience. But as always, sharing is highly appreciated. (And reviews on iTunes make my day!) Aloha...Mckenna PS... keep scrolling for the offers I made in the podcast! As discussed in the podcast: If you are on my email list, you got the discount code to use for the E's of Selling Art System. On the heels of the Four Dirty Little Words episode, I need to encourage you to do a little bit of storytelling. There are some powerful ways that you can be the conduit that connects your art with viewers of your work. And, now that you know the importance of keeping the Four Dirty Little Words under control, it's super valuable to know when and how to use them to build trust. That's where Purposeful Sharing comes in. So put on your thinking cap on. This one will challenge you. Hey! I need you to head over to iTunes, please. Listen here, but (especially if you feel inspired) please leave your comments/reviews on iTunes. And then share the link everywhere! PS: Here's the link I promised for the most recent Blog Post!
There are certain aspects to every engagement opportunity that tap into our most common and core human instincts. If you are stuck in the natural habit of using these four words, you will struggle to connect. And, unfortunately, every kind of connection is damaged. It might be during phone calls, in-person selling, email marketing, or creating a website or descriptions of your art or even your artist statement. All engagements benefit by leaving out the Four Dirty Little Words as much as possible. It's not easy for most of us. It takes very "purposeful and intentional sharing strategies" to overcome these words. You may need to give this some deep thought to really conquer the instinct and normal tendency to use these words. But you will reap great benefits, both in your professional life and personal life, as you start to lessen your use of the Four Dirty Little Words. Be honest with yourself and heed the warnings. Is this something that you need to improve on in your world? I look forward to your comments! Mckenna Hey... If you really want to "pay me back" for my helpful podcasts - go to iTunes and leave me a review! Mahalo! And if you are not on my mailing list...well... you need to be! Join Now!
I know. This seems counter-intuitive, but having your cards out is costing you sales. Seriously. You really need to hear me out on this subject. I know you want to make sure that you are doing everything you need to in order to secure a trusting relationship with people viewing your art. To get to that point, you must give this idea deep consideration. Someone with half of the story, half of the connection, half of "the heart-of-the-matter" is unlikely to purchase from you anytime soon. They walk away with your card and not nearly enough of what they need to actually "think about it". Open your heart and your mind and take 14 minutes of your day to listen to something that will change your attitude and increase your sales. I await your comments! Listen and then tell me why you still feel the need to leave "all your cards" on the table. Mckenna PS: Let's find loving homes for your art! Listen on iTunes! And please leave a review of any and all episodes that you think will help others find loving homes for their art.
This is the natural continuation from last week's episode. If you haven't heard #12 - stop reading this and go listen to it first. It will put you in the right frame of mind for tackling this often difficult and delicately balanced moment during a presentation of your art. If you are catching this on iTunes or other sources, feel free to visit my website and contribute to the conversation or start one. This is such an important topic! Enjoy... and Aloha... Rebecca Vincent is a fine artist and printmaker from Northeast England. She is charming, thoughtful, and very clever. She shares some very smart tips and hints in this exchange. She has been a professional artist for over 20 years, but as you will learn, it's never as simple as it seems. Stay to the end when she lets us in on her best bit of advice. Visit her website and see her great work! Enjoy! Mckenna
I don't want this to be controversial, but I hope it will start a discussion. This is so important and I think that if you hear ALL the reason listed here, you will have a hard time avoiding my advice on this issue. Inspired by the last podcast, I dig deep into a micro-moment when your actions are critically important. It's a test that is hard to pass. We all hear these words from time to time when presenting our art to the public, but it's never easy to handle the atmosphere created when they are spoken. It can be very disheartening to hear these six words and it's even harder to maintain your poise and purpose. This might be one of the most important podcasts I will share. I hope it helps you Find (even more) Loving Homes for Your Art! Mckenna Listen Anywhere - Download Now! or listen on iTunes!
This is such an important concept that it should be required listening at the start of every art show. It's based on the "shoe store" selling model. What's that you ask? It's all about listening with a specific frame of mind. The reference to my guidebook is the E's of Selling Art System - a Guidebook and Flashcard Set. And I have decided to offer you a discount! In this episode, I discuss the importance - on many levels - of having a few signs in your display. With the level of distraction in today's world, this is something that is increasingly necessary to help "ground" viewers of your work, your medium, and possibly your methods. A video will be added to my website. Enjoy! Mckenna Listen Anywhere - Download Now!
The number one thing that can hurt your sales is assuming it's your turn to talk. As you will hear in this episode, there are some really important moments during your conversation with potential collectors. Sometimes you talk. Sometimes they talk. The balancing act is a critically important detail and I give you some tools to find your balance. Listen Anywhere - Download Now! Or listen on iTunes!
This is an in-depth and longer format episode. It's the first interview I have shared and it's a good one. Carolyn Edlund is a wealth of art marketing savvy advice. Her website, Artsy Shark is consistently ranked among the Top Ten Art Blogs. She recently took a new position working for the Clark Hulings Fund for Visual Artists and we spend some time discussing the great work that the organization is doing for the artist community. And of course, she had plenty of solid advice and excellent thoughts to share, from marketing strategies to website best practices. Get out your pen and paper. You will want to take notes! Enjoy!
I was amazed, overwhelmed, and somewhat sad after a chat and horrid discovery about an artist named Kevin and then something very odd coincided in my world. I had to share! And I had to share BOTH as marketing tips! (FYI - if you listen to this, you will no longer have any excuse for not getting your emails sent!) Enjoy! (Ignore the call-to-action to go join Patreon. It's on hiatus!) This episode is all about staying in touch and staying top of mind. But what do you do when your email list gets cold? It's about a circle that can never be broken. It's about a passage from a book written in 1972. It's about PURE connections between you, your art, and those who view your art. And, although it's a bit esoteric, it might be the concept that wraps up your loose ends and gives you the insight to Find Loving Homes for Your Art. It answers an old question: What's Love Got to Do With It? Listen Anywhere - Download Now!
Welcome to Episode #03...it's a doozy. We all hate these two words. We hate to hear them and we hate to say them. So what should you do when someone says them to you? Whenever I hear these words when I am at a show, it brings a slight twinge. But, over the years, I have developed a solution and a heartfelt piece of tried-and-true advice to share that will help you bridge the seemingly cavernous gap "The Two Words" words create. You can now create a perfect turning point instead of losing all hope. And, as promised in the last episode, this is a turning point for this podcast, too. I have my feet and my heart planted carefully and solidly now. I see the light at the end of the tunnel and years of podcast's are exposed by the light. (It's now safe to subscribe. Well, well, well! Episode #02 is so much better! To hear the very first episode (published in March 2018!) click here. And check out the comments! It only took several months of attending webinars, watching YouTube Videos, and struggling with more than a few software experiments, but finally, I got into a rhythm. This is still a bit raw, but it's much closer to the "trailhead" of the podcasts. However, this one will do your heart a lot of good, too. Big takeaways. Including my often revisited theme: YOU are so important. Art is so important. If you want to get the BIGGER story, immerse yourself in this love fest: "The E's of Selling Art Blog" here on my website. That is where the path is leading me. I hope you will join me for this unique journey. Aloha Nui Loa from Maui, Mckenna PS: in the next episode things get very intense, so be prepared! It's a quintessential call to artists to Find Loving Homes for Your Art. Download to Listen Later? Or subscribe on iTunes!
Aloha and Welcome! There are three major takeaways from this somewhat "raw" first-ever podcast. There are some lessons learned and checklists created for future "flawless" (ha!) podcasting, too! The original release of this can be found here - I would love to bring all those comments to this page, but for now, just go read them. I finally decided to officially create weekly podcasts in the fall of 2018. Hope you hit subscribe! There are several weeks already in the queue and they just keep getting better.
