Q: What is the Word of Wisdom? A revelation given to Joseph Smith in 1833 (Doctrine and Covenants 89), outlining principles for physical health, spiritual well-being, and wise stewardship over the body. Q: Was it always a commandment? Originally a “principle with promise” and not enforced by commandment, it became a binding standard for Latter-day Saints in the early 20th century. Q: What does it prohibit? Alcohol, tobacco, and “hot drinks” (interpreted as coffee and tea). Q: What does it encourage? Wholesome herbs, grains, and fruits in their season; meat to be eaten sparingly; and an emphasis on gratitude for the bounty of the earth. Q: Why is it important today?
