Listen as Mark James preaches a sermon called The Burdened Leader and the Complaining People from Numbers 11.
Fr. Mike discusses how the Israelites complaining against God and believing they were better off in Egypt reflects our own inclination to be enslaved by sin. Today's readings are Numbers 11, Deuteronomy 10, and Psalm 33. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. Please note: The Bible contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.
Numbers 11 is a significant chapter in the Bible, describing a series of events where the Israelites complain about their hardships during their journey through the wilderness. The chapter highlights themes of dissatisfaction, divine provision, judgment, and leadership challenges. Summary of Numbers 11 1.The People Complain (Verses 1-3) The Israelites, recently freed from Egypt, begin to complain about their hardships. God's anger is kindled, and He sends fire that consumes some of the outskirts of the camp. Moses intercedes, and God stops the fire, but the place is named Taberah (“burning”) because of the event. 2.The Craving for Meat (Verses 4-9) A group among them, called the “rabble,” begins to crave meat and complain about only having manna to eat. They nostalgically recall the food they had in Egypt—fish, cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic. The people express their dissatisfaction with manna, even though it was God's miraculous provision. 3.Moses' Burden and God's Response (Verses 10-15) Moses, overwhelmed by the people's complaints, expresses frustration to God. He feels the weight of leadership and asks God to either help him or take his life. This highlights Moses' human limitations and the immense challenge of leading a complaining people. 4.The Appointment of Seventy Elders (Verses 16-30) God instructs Moses to gather seventy elders, who will receive a portion of Moses' spirit to help him lead. When the Spirit of God comes upon them, they prophesy. Two men, Eldad and Medad, prophesy in the camp, and Joshua wants to stop them, but Moses responds that he wishes all God's people could be filled with the Spirit. 5.God Sends Quail and Judgment (Verses 31-35) God answers the people's craving by sending an overwhelming amount of quail. The people greedily gather and eat the meat, but as they chew, God sends a plague because of their greed and lack of gratitude. The place is named Kibroth Hattaavah (“Graves of Craving”) because many who craved meat died there. The Israelites then continue their journey to Hazeroth. Key Themes and Lessons Gratitude vs. Complaining: The Israelites' complaints reflect human nature's tendency to focus on what is lacking rather than appreciating God's blessings. God's Provision: Despite their complaints, God provides food (manna and quail), showing His care but also His discipline when people are ungrateful. Leadership Challenges: Moses experiences the emotional toll of leadership, but God provides support through the seventy elders. Judgment and Consequences: Craving and greed lead to divine judgment, emphasizing that desires must be aligned with God's will. Application for Today Trusting in God's provision rather than longing for the past. The importance of gratitude over complaining. Leadership requires reliance on God and shared responsibility. Unchecked cravings and dissatisfaction can lead to negative consequences. Numbers 11 serves as a reminder of both God's provision and the importance of faithfulness in following His ways. There are times, in all of our lives, when we're tempted to grumble and complain. These times can discourage ourselves and others. Today, we'll study Numbers 11 and see how the Children of Israel's grumbling brought discouragement to Moses and judgment upon themselves. DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. The podcast suggests that Numbers might be one of the hardest books of the Bible to read and understand. What books have you found difficult to work through? Why? 2. What does the people's complaints indicate about their trust in the Lord? How is this a break in their covenant with Him? 3. What was the primary complaint of this passage that was given in verses 4-6? 4. What does verse 10 indicate about the solidarity of the people in this grumbling? Does this unity in the midst of their grumbling prove that their grumbling was righteous? How do you know? 5. In verse 18, the Lord called the people to consecrate themselves to Him. According to Leviticus 1, how was a person consecrated to the Lord? What was the reason for this consecration? What did the need for this consecration indicate about their standing with the Lord? 6. What did the Lord tell Moses do in verses 16 to 17? What were these people for? How do you think they would have helped Moses bear the pressures of leadership? If you're in a position of leadership, how can you help the other leaders around you bear up under their burdens? 7. When the Lord provided quail in verse 31, how did the people respond in verse 32? What does their response indicate about who or what they were putting their trust in? 8. Although there is no indication that the people had obeyed God's command to consecrate themselves to Him (from verse 18), even if they had reconsecrated themselves to Him, how does their hoarding of the quail indicate that they weren't actually trusting Him? 9. As we consider all that we've been reading about the Children of Israel, how were these people falling into a pattern of complaining? How was this affecting their own well-being? Their relationship with the Lord? Their relationships with one another? Their relationship with the leadership? 10. What was the ultimate outcome of their complaining? Was it a righteous outcome? 11. The podcast pointed out that in verse 21, Moses refers to 600,000 people, but we know from Numberers 1:46 that the number was actually 603,550. The podcast explained some principles regarding the Bible's use of round and specific numbers? What principles were given? How does this help us understand these differences? 12. In this passage, Moses clearly was discouraged. How did he handle his discouragement in this passage? How should he have handled it? Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! Even though the people of Israel dwell with the LORD in their midst, they quickly fall into their familiar grumbling on their way to the Promised Land. They long for the food of Egypt, despite the versatility of manna. Moses responds to the people's grumbling by bringing the matter before the LORD and asking for help in leading the people. The LORD responds to Moses' request for help by placing His Spirit upon seventy elders of Israel so that they prophesy for a time. The LORD responds to His people's grumbling for meat by overloading them with quail, so that what Israel should have received as a gift comes instead as a judgment. Even still, the LORD continued to lead His people toward the Promised Land. Rev. Tyler Hauptmeier, pastor at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Doniphan, NE, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Numbers 11:1-35. "Wilderness Wanderings” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Numbers. After the LORD delivers His people from slavery in Egypt, He leads them toward the Promised Land. Although the first generation of Israelites proves faithless, the LORD remains faithful to His people and brings a new generation of Israelites to the plains of Moab. This strengthens us to listen to God's promises today and stay faithful to Him as He guides us toward resurrection life.

SERIES: “The Need for Followership”Certain things in life we do alone. Some out of necessity, others by choice. But when it comes to following Jesus, we are never alone. No matter how much our own fears or even the devil himself may try to convince us otherwise, we always follow Jesus with others. God has given us fellow followers to walk in his footsteps together as he leads us. May we never doubt this truth, nor take it for granted!

Passage: 4 The riffraff among them had a strong craving for other food. The Israelites wept again and said, “Who will feed us meat? 5 We remember the free fish we ate in Egypt, along with the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic. 6 But now our appetite is gone; there's nothing to look at but this manna! ” 10 Moses heard the people, family after family, weeping at the entrance of their tents. The Lord was very angry; Moses was also provoked. 11 So Moses asked the Lord, “Why have you brought such trouble on your servant? Why are you angry with me, and why do you burden me with all these people? 12 Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth so you should tell me, ‘Carry them at your breast, as a nursing mother carries a baby,' to the land that you swore to give their ancestors? 13 Where can I get meat to give all these people? For they are weeping to me, ‘Give us meat to eat! ' 14 I can't carry all these people by myself. They are too much for me. 15 If you are going to treat me like this, please kill me right now if I have found favor with you, and don't let me see my misery anymore.” 16 The Lord answered Moses, “Bring me seventy men from Israel known to you as elders and officers of the people. Take them to the tent of meeting and have them stand there with you. 17 Then I will come down and speak with you there. I will take some of the Spirit who is on you and put the Spirit on them. They will help you bear the burden of the people, so that you do not have to bear it by yourself. 24 Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord. He brought seventy men from the elders of the people and had them stand around the tent. 25 Then the Lord descended in the cloud and spoke to him. He took some of the Spirit who was on Moses and placed the Spirit on the seventy elders. As the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they never did it again. 26 Two men had remained in the camp, one named Eldad and the other Medad; the Spirit rested on them — they were among those listed, but had not gone out to the tent — and they prophesied in the camp. 27 A young man ran and reported to Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” 28 Joshua son of Nun, assistant to Moses since his youth, responded, “Moses, my lord, stop them! ” 29 But Moses asked him, “Are you jealous on my account? If only all the Lord's people were prophets and the Lord would place his Spirit on them! ” 30 Then Moses returned to the camp along with the elders of Israel. -- Numbers 11:4-6,10-17,24-29 Song: The Lord Will Provide (https://open.spotify.com/track/6hphIUnmvXPPydnr8kZnGf?si=253c0eafab3e4310) by Brett Younker, Chris Davenport, and Jess Cates Lyrics: Look at the flowers In all of their beauty I don't have to wonder You know what You're doing So why would I worry at all You're faithful to supply Everything I need Everything I need My Father has it My Father has it Every single time The Lord will provide My Father has it Look at the sparrow Lacking for nothing No fear of tomorrow And what it will bring If I have You I have enough 'Cause Your love will satisfy Seek first the kingdom and its treasures Everything else it will be added All that I'm needing I know the Lord will provide I know my God's not empty handed He gives us blessings upon blessings I'm still believing I know the Lord will provide Prayer: Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands. Serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song. Be sure that the Lord is God. It is he that made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise. Be thankful to him, and speak good of his name. For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endures from generation to generation. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
