New Hope Daily SOAP - Daily Devotional Bible Reading

Daily Dose of Hope June 3, 2026   Scripture: 1 Kings 3   Prayer: Dear God, You are amazing!  How awesome it is that you who created all things are also so intimately involved in our lives.  We give you glory and praise for who you are.  We are so thankful for your love.  We want to know you more.  We want and need to hear your voice.  Help us set aside our scattered thoughts and focus on you.  In these next few moments of silence, Lord, hear our prayers...  In Your Name, Amen.   Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional and podcast that complements the New Hope Daily Bible reading plan.  This week, we have started digging into 1 Kings.  King David has died and his son, Solomon, is now firmly on the throne.  After yesterday's chapter, we are left wondering exactly what kind of king Solomon is going to be.   Today's reading is 1 Kings 3.  It seems that Solomon starts his reign out fairly well.  Solomon was following God's laws, making the appropriate sacrifices, and walking with the Lord.  Although, do notice that the people were still sacrificing in the high places.  These high places were shrines or raised platforms on top of hills in the open air.  The Scripture says that the people were doing this because the Temple had not yet been built.  I wanted to point this out because, even after the Temple is built, the people struggle to dismantle these high places.  And this is where the people are tempted to sacrifice and worship to other gods, not just the one true God.  Keep an eye on this as we progress through 1 & 2 Kings.   Back to the chapter - Solomon recognizes his own immaturity and lack of experience and asks God for a discerning, obedient heart so that he can administer wisdom in his kingdom.  This pleases God because Solomon doesn't ask for selfish favors, but rather the ability to help other people.  In response, God grants wisdom, wealth, and fame to Solomon.  The only caveat to all this is that Solomon continues to obey God's commands.    In the last part of this chapter, we get a glimpse into Solomon's new wisdom being tested.  As Solomon begins to rule, he is also very prolific in his wisdom writings, penning Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon.    More tomorrow.   Blessings, Pastor Vicki

It takes wisdom and discernment to navigate the complex realities of interpersonal or social conflict or to find truth in the sea of disinformation. So, how do we become wise? In this passage, Solomon recognizes he is still a child and does not know how to lead the people of Israel. Instead of asking for wealth, military victory, or a long life, he asks for “a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.” When we turn in prayer to the source of infinite wisdom, with humility as we acknowledge our limitations and rely on God's revealed word and the community of faith, our hearts are shaped in such a way that we are able to walk in faithfulness with the one who modeled for us true wisdom and shows us what is true, what is good, what is necessary, and what is right.

In this message from 1 Kings 3, Pastor Gerrit walks through the early reign of King Solomon and the famous moment when God invited Solomon to ask for anything he wanted. Rather than requesting wealth or power, Solomon asked for wisdom to lead God's people well, and that humility is what pleased God most. The passage shows that wisdom begins with honestly admitting what we don't know and genuinely caring about the people we serve. God gave Solomon far more than he asked for, which says a lot about who God is and how he responds to a surrendered heart.

TODAY'S EPISODE: Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible for May 18th, day 139 of our journey through the scriptures. Join your Bible reading coach, Hunter, as we explore wisdom and faithfulness through today's readings: 1 Kings 3, 2 Chronicles 1, Psalm 78, and 2 Thessalonians 2. We'll witness Solomon's prayer for wisdom, reflect on the lessons of Israel's past, and hear encouragement to stand firm amid confusion and chaos. Together, we'll pray for God's comfort and strength, remembering that we are loved, held, and called to walk forward in hope. Let's focus our hearts and minds on God's word and discover peace for the journey ahead. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Don't be shaken. Don't be fooled. These are the words that rise to the surface as we meditate on the letter to the Thessalonians. Life throws so much at us—circumstances that seem impossible, relationships that break us, financial and physical troubles that pile on. These things can shake us to our core and make us wonder if God is even near. We can be shaken to the point of despair. But it's not just the hard realities of life that can leave us unsettled. There are anxious voices and zealous teachers, sometimes even within the church, who try to persuade us that we're not measuring up, that we need to do more, achieve more, believe just the right things, or chase after some secret knowledge to truly be embraced by God. Fear creeps in that, if we miss a certain event or neglect a certain teaching, we'll be left behind, unloved, or even condemned. This is exactly what was happening in Thessalonica. They were being told that they might miss out on God, that there was a secret or spiritual insight they lacked, and unless they did something extra, they would forfeit God's favor. If life isn't hard enough, these spiritual anxieties can threaten to unravel our whole faith. But Paul's message cuts through all that noise: steady on. Remember, it is God who chose you. Your salvation is not the result of desperate striving or frantic chasing after spiritual highs. It is not a fragile hope that depends on your perfection or persistence. You are secure because of what God has already done. You don't need to leave your wilderness in search of him—Christ has come into your wilderness searching for you. The good news is not about what you have to do for God, but what God has done for you. You now share in the glory of our Lord Jesus, not because you have completed a spiritual checklist but because of his finished work. So don't be shaken. Don't be fooled. Stand firm and keep a strong grip—not just on doctrine, but on the astounding reality that you have been wrapped into the very life and love of God through Christ. You are reconciled. You are loved. Keep your grip on that. That's a prayer for my own soul. That's a prayer for my family—my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's a prayer for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ.  Amen.  OUR WEBSITE: www.dailyradiobible.com We are reading through the New Living Translation.   Leave us a voicemail HERE: https://www.speakpipe.com/dailyradiobible Subscribe to us at YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Dailyradiobible/featured OTHER PODCASTS: Listen with Apple Podcast DAILY BIBLE FOR KIDS DAILY PSALMS DAILY PROVERBS DAILY LECTIONARY DAILY CHRONOLOGICAL

This message from 1 Kings 3 looks at the wisdom of Solomon and reminds us that every decision carries weight. Our choices rarely affect only us. They shape our families, relationships, churches, workplaces, and the people God has placed around us.Through Solomon's early mistakes and his humble prayer for wisdom, we see that true discernment begins with dependence on God. Solomon did not ask for wealth, power, or revenge. He asked for a listening heart, the ability to hear God clearly and lead faithfully. That same invitation is available to us today. When life presents open doors, new opportunities, hard relationships, unclear next steps, or decisions bigger than we feel equipped to handle, God invites us to slow down, humble ourselves, and ask for wisdom. A wise life is not built on one dramatic moment, but on small, faithful, daily decisions to listen to God and obey His voice. The challenge is simple: don't walk through every open door just because it opens. Ask God for a listening heart, surround yourself with wise people, and take the next faithful step with Him.New to Friends Church? We're so glad you're here! What was the stipulation for this blessing in verse 14?  5.    How does verse 14 help us see what it looks like to walk with the Lord?  6.    What did the women want in verses 16 to 27? How was Solomon's wisdom on display? What was the outcome of his decision for these women?  7.    In verse 28, how did the people respond to this display of wisdom? Why do people respond this way when they encounter God's wisdom? 8.    More than likely, you want wisdom. What guidelines did the podcast give for how to have God's wisdom in a situation? How was this principle demonstrated in Solomon's life?  9.    The podcast also took a bird's eye view of Solomon's life. Where is his life going? How could this have been avoided?  10.    Where is your own life going? How can you continue to walk in God's wisdom?  Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! But there is one moment in the Old Testament where God does actually do that for someone. God comes to a man and says, “Ask for whatever you want Me to give you.” And the way that man responds teaches us something really important about what we should desire—and what God delights to give. That story is found in 1 Kings chapter 3….Let the Art Speak: About Hope conference on April 10 & 11 in Madison, WIJoin artists & creatives at the 5th Let the Art Speak conference — a celebration of hope.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Packinghouse's Wednesday night worship service from March 4, 2026 Solomon's prayer in 1 Kings 3 shows a leader who knows everything he has comes from God and that God's people do not belong to him. Instead of asking for wealth, power, revenge, or an easier life, he asks for a listening heart—wisdom to discern rightly and serve God's people with justice. That request pleases the Lord, and God gives him both the wisdom he asked for and the blessings he did not ask for, reminding us that when we seek God's heart first, He provides what we truly need. The takeaway is simple: the best prayer is not “Lord, build my kingdom,” but “Lord, give me the heart and wisdom to serve You and the people You've placed around me.” - Rick Cornejo - Wednesday, March 4, 2026

In this Bible study, Rev. David Buchs traces the path from Psalm 41's vision of charity to Solomon's prayer for “a listening heart,” showing how true wisdom is more than intelligence—it is learning to love what is good and remain faithful over time. The study reflects on how prosperity, power, and even giftedness can become dangerous when the heart drifts from the Lord, and why God's people must always think in terms of the long game of faith. “Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and married one of his daughters. He brought her to live in the City of David until he could finish building his palace and the Temple of the Lord and the wall around the city.” (1 Kings 3:1 NLT) Solomon’s fall and disillusionment began with a series of compromises, one of which involved marrying the daughter of Pharaoh. Solomon did this because he wanted to establish a political alliance with Egypt. It was a strategic move. For all practical purposes, Solomon “yoked” himself unequally with a nonbeliever—something God had forbidden. God had told the Jewish people not to intermarry with other nations. This was not a racial issue; it was a spiritual issue. God didn’t want the Israelites aligning themselves with people who worshipped false gods. He knew how powerful the temptation of idolatry was. He knew that the Israelites’ hearts would turn away from Him if they established relationships with nonbelievers. God’s warning should resonate with His people today as well. We have an enemy who will use anything—including other people—to disrupt our relationship with God. And when those other unbelieving people inspire a romantic attraction in us, their negative impact is magnified. That’s how the devil took down Samson, perhaps the strongest man who ever lived. Samson had a natural attraction to Philistine women, even though they were not only idol worshippers but also enemies of Israel. The devil fanned the flames of attraction until Samson turned his back on his spiritual responsibilities to pursue ill-considered relationships. The race that is set before us as God’s people is difficult. A wise strategy is to run it with a partner who loves the Lord as much as you do. If you are a single person, you should pray for and wait on the godly man or woman that the Lord will bring into your life. You can be sure He would not want you romantically involved with a person who does not believe. The struggles, temptations, and negative influences are simply too great to be ignored. The Bible tells us, “Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever?” (2 Corinthians 6:14–15 NLT). In the race of life, you want to run with someone who is going in the same direction that you are. And if you are Christians, both you and your mate will be running toward the Lord and His plan and purpose for your lives. Solomon did not live by that principle. He teamed up with people who did not share his faith or his God. Be wiser than the wisest man who ever lived. Don’t become a partner with an unbeliever. Reflection question: How can you determine whether someone is going in the same direction as you, spiritually speaking?
