This episode is part 16 in a series going through the story of the Book of Mormon. This episode covers chapters 9-14 of the book of Mosiah. This is part of the record of King Limhi's grandfather Zeniff that Ammon read.It explains that Zeniff reclaimed the land of Nephi but only by the Lamanites giving him a part of the land. While Zeniff was king, the Nephites and the Lamanites battled several times. The Nephites won, but with bitter casualties.Zeniff helped the land of Nephi prosper before passing the crown to his son Noah. Unlike his namesake, King Noah of the Nephites was kind of like King Belshazzar. He taxed the people and he and his chosen priests lived lavishly.A preacher named Abinadi got into some trouble by pronouncing judgment if the people and king didn't repent. King Noah imprisoned Abinadi, then had him stand before the priests to answer their questions. Abinadi delivered a sermon quoting the ten commandments and Isaiah chapter 53 almost exactly as they are in the King James Bible. We talk about how this poses a challenge to the Book of Mormon being a translation from ancient records as it claims.Further research:Book of Mormon in videoJoseph Smith: The Prophet of the RestorationThe Book of Mormon online: Mosiah [chapters 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14]*** Please contribute to the Hurricane relief fund for A.M. The True Meaning of Contention: A Scriptural Analysis In this engaging video, we tackle the provocative idea of peace being used as a weapon to stifle dissent and uphold unjust authority. Using the narrative of King Noah and Abinadi from the Book of Mormon as a case study, we illustrate how leaders can manipulate religious teachings to serve their own ends. Our discussion extends to contemporary church culture, where the fear of causing contention can prevent necessary conversations about truth and righteousness. We encourage viewers to critically examine the messages they receive and to prioritize divine principles over societal pressures. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wardradio/support

Our Mothers Knew It with Maria EckersleyA Creative Study of Come, Follow MeBook of Mormon [MOSIAH 18-24] Insights“We Have Entered into a Covenant with Him”May 20 - May 26, 2024WEEK 21: SUMMARY=================Lesson Summary:This week, we'll study two epic deliverance stories. The people of Alma will find refuge and covenant connection in the Waters of Mormon but stumble into bondage in the land of Helam. Ultimately, they will pray for relief and find it in their day-to-day burdens as well as their miraculous escape. Limhi's people will also suffer through decades of bondage. They'll come to know their need for a deliverer and find it with the help of the Lord. Thanks to ingenuity, faith, and the help of Ammon's band of rescuers, they too will find deliverance in Zarahemla.sage to others and create an epic pivot point in the Book of Mormon.Questions to Consider:Mosiah 19:16-17 | Do you see a link between this type of treatment of women in this week's chapters and the lack of commandment keeping Abinadi spoke about? How does Limhi break this cycle when it comes to the widows?Mosiah 24:8-9 | Why would Amulon delight in the Nephites misery? How do you see the slippery slope of unrighteous dominion impacting Amulon?Mosiah 23:6 & 23:13 | Why does Alma change his perspective when they get to Zarahemla and become King Mosiah's subjects? Does this choice plant seeds for a future reign of judges that Alma and Mosiah 2 will set up together?CHAPTERS=========00:00:13 INSIGHTS INTRODUCTION00:03:54 INSIGHTS CHAPTER SUMMARY00:09:27 SPARK 1: HEART KNITTING 10100:19:28 SPARK 2: BEASTS & BEAUTY00:30:43 SPARK 3: LIMHI'S WHALE00:41:26 QUESTIONS00:46:48 WRAP UPLINKS=====ETSY Printables: https://meckmom.etsy.comWEB: https://www.gather.meckmom.comINSTAGRAM: Instagram @meckmomlifePODCAST: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST DISCLAIMER=================================This podcast represents my own thoughts and opinions. From Come Follow Me:Large fires can start from a single spark. Abinadi was only one man testifying against a powerful king and his court. His words were rejected for the most part, and he was sentenced to death. Yet his testimony of Jesus Christ, who is the “light … that can never be darkened” (Mosiah 16:9), sparked something inside the young priest Alma. And that spark of conversion slowly grew as Alma brought many others to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. The flames that killed Abinadi eventually died out, but the fire of faith that his words created would have a lasting influence on the Nephites—and on people who read his words today. Most of us will never face quite what Abinadi did because of our testimonies, but we all have moments when following Jesus Christ is a test of our courage and faith. Perhaps studying Abinadi's testimony will fan the flames of testimony and courage in your heart as well. The thoughts, ideas, and beliefs we express on this channel do not officially represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  For additional information or official statements, please visit the website below. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints:https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/?lang=eng#biblestudy #oldtestament #religion #churchofjesuschrist #ldspodcast #christianpodcast #missionary #lds #biblestories #christ #faith #faithinchrist #scriptures #bookofmormon #doctrineandcovenants #pearlofgreatprice #temples #houseofthelord #mormon #mormonbeliefs #chritiansandmormons #god #endure #ironrod #faithineveryfootstep #generalconference #prophets #followtheprophet #commandments #love #service #charity #keepstriving #keeponstriving #gospelgrowthandgoodtimes #become #newtestamentSupport the Show.

Abinadi is a pivot point in the story of the Book of Mormon.  Much of the remaining text in the Book of Mormon are people impacted by Abinadi's ministry. How is Abinadi's sermon related to King Benjamin's? What are Abinadi's key messages? How is Jesus our “father,” and we are to be his “seed”? In this episode, BYU professors Jared Ludlow, Nick Frederick, Jan Martin, and Joshua Sears explore these questions in an inspiring scripture conversation.

Some 150 voices unite in the Book of Mormon to provide a clear witness of the Savior Jesus Christ. What insights might we gain from examining their distinctive voices? And what meaning can studying unique voices of the past lend to our lives today? In this episode BYU professor of Ancient Scripture John Hilton III answers such questions in discussing his recent book Voices in the Book of Mormon—Discovering Distinctive Witnesses of Jesus Christ. Dr. Hilton details some of the linguistic characteristics of major speakers, from Nephi and Mormon to Jacob and Jesus Christ. He also explains how voices speak in harmony, especially as later prophets use teachings from their predecessors. Finally, Dr. Hilton asks us to consider applying Elder Boyd K. Packer's question, “therefore, what?” as we examine who is speaking, to whom, and for what purpose, and how such unique voices might teach principles relevant to our lives.    Publications: Voices in the Book of Mormon—Discovering Distinctive Witnesses of Jesus Christ (Religious Studies Center, 2024) “Textual Similarities in the World of Abinadi and Alma's Counsel to Corianton” (BYU Studies Quarterly, 51.2, 2012) “Samuel and His Nephite Sources” (BYU Studies Quarterly, 56.3, 2017) “Remembering Christ's Blood Which Was Shed” (Religious Educator, 23.3, 2022) “The Isaiah Map: An Approach to Teaching Isaiah” (Religious Educator, 21.1, 2020) “Abinadi's Legacy: Tracing His Influence through the Book of Mormon” (in Abinadi, Religious Studies Center, 2018)   Click here to learn more about John Hilton III

To kick off the new year, we recently had the privilege to speak to academic duo and long-time friends, Adam Miller and Rosalynde Welch about the new book they co-authored together, titled Seven Gospels: The Many Lives of Christ in the Book of Mormon. Their book examines the many ways that Christ shows up in the lives of individuals in the Book of Mormon, including Nephi, Abinadi, Abish, and others. Like the New Testament gospels, these distinct witnesses both affirm and challenge each other, showing how Christ's message for each of us intimately reflects our personal questions and circumstances. This episode not only guides us through these distinct witnesses but also describes the close reading process that allowed Adam and Rosalynde to observe such differentiation in the first place. By slowing down with the scriptures and zooming in on details—even supposedly mundane ones like punctuation and phrasing—scripture can teach us things we don't expect to learn. Just as there are a multiplicity of witnesses of Christ in the Book of Mormon, Adam and Rosalynde make a case that our scriptural canon is a springboard to endless interpretations that speak to us according to our spiritual needs. For those who don't yet know these two, Adam is a professor of philosophy at Collin College, and Rosalynde is the Associate Director and Research Fellow at the Neal A. Maxwell Institute. Adam and Rosalynde are two of the brightest minds in Latter-day Saint studies, so to have them team up on a book is a special privilege, and we loved talking with them, as we always do.
