Jim Tews, comedian/author/animator, joins us today to talk a bit about everything. ADHD, growing up a creative church kid, storytelling, comedy, and more. Jim's got a great perspective on what it means to tell a story, and we have a great time finding our way into a focused conversation about the differences and similarities between telling a story, and telling a joke. We had our first story slam event in over three years this last weekend and it was so truly incredible to be back at Wil-Mar Neighborhood Center for stories, community, and fun. Our winning storyteller, Jessica Regan, shares a great story all about how sometimes you have to be bold enough to say hello first, often to a stranger. We can learn a thing or two from Jessica and her son. In fact, I wrote about it on the new Madison Story Slam website in a blog post here. LINKS Madison Story Slam: Website Instagram TikTok Facebook
John Mleziva set his sites on being a Brewer, wait no…a brewer, lowercase B; but after a stint in Scotland, John was beguiled by the great mistress that is whiskey and set forth on a path to found maybe the best distillery Madison, Wisconsin has ever seen, State Line Distillery. John is a community guy, who is as passionate about State Line being a hub of community as he is about State Line producing the highest quality distilled spirits you can bottle. And if State Line's recent Double Gold Award at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, awarded to their coffee liqueur made with beans from local coffee barons, Kyle and Gwen Johnson, says anything about John's passion, you should visit the tasting room and experience the community that happens there. Madison Story Slam is back after more than three years! Both the podcast and our live events are back. Our next event is Saturday, May 20, 2023 at the Wil-Mar Neighborhood Center in Madison, WI. Story Slam: Boldly is sponsored by One Barrel Brewing Co, and will feature true stories based on the theme “boldly.” Tom Farley returns to the Madison Story Slam microphone (the first guest to do that) to share a bit about how he is doing in a post pandemic world, and how he's using the power of story to connect with people seeking sobriety. Tom's brother Chris Farley had a very public struggle with addiction, and ultimately succumbed to his disease in December 1997. Tom's learning how to step away from the fringes of Chris' limelight to start sharing his own story to connect to people. Hey all, long time no see. Adam's moved to Colorado, and he is no longer producing Madison Story Slam. This podcast more or less exists as a time capsule of an amazing community from Madison, WI and we'll try to keep it live as long as we can! The reason you're seeing a new episode is because Adam is launching a new show called, High, Friends!, which is a show about the fun, the science, and the benefits of cannabis. One benefit of having a podcast with a decent following, is being able to promote your new projects. That's what this is. If you'd subscribe to the new show, it would be huge. Hope you're well, and finding life to be as amazing as you are. High, Friends! Link: https://pca.st/wm9pna3w

We are now doing two episodes a week! As evidenced by this second episode this week. We are committed to providing you with episodes to fill your days with great stories. You are all a big part of this community, and we thank you for your support. Here's a warning that this episode deals with suicide. While it's a tough subject, we believe that it's important to talk about this subject. We deal with real life stories, and all that they entail. Our hope is that these two stories provide healing and comfort to everyone who hears them, especially those who have dealt directly with suicide in their life. First up, Ryan Haack is sharing a few stories about his dad. Ryan told this story on the 4 year anniversary of his dad's death by suicide. I love how Ryan ends his story. It's also a story you may want to see on video (YouTube links for both stories are below) because there are some visual aspects that may make it better. The second story on the episode is told by Jessica Regan, and it is also about the death of her father by suicide. I am continually blown away by the willingness of the members of our community to share deep aspects of their personal lives. It's just amazing. Enjoy the episode.
