Ryan dives deep into the data after John Kuhn's confusing analytics tweet sparked debate about defensive aggression. Using actual NFL coverage numbers, the analysis reveals a shocking truth: coverage shells tell us almost nothing about how aggressive a defense really is. The Minnesota Vikings run cover two more than almost any team in football—traditionally the "bend don't break" coverage—yet they lead the NFL in blitz rate at 48%. Meanwhile, the elite Texans defense barely blitzes and avoids man coverage entirely. The episode breaks down why personnel determines possibility, why the best coverages work precisely because they're used sparingly, and why fans are actually craving unpredictability rather than aggression. Ryan also explains his continued support for Jim Leonard as DC candidate before wrapping with day one updates from East-West Shrine Bowl practice, including standout performances from Cade Klubnik, Harold Perkins Jr., and several stock-rising prospects Packers fans should watch. January 23, 2026 - Season 16, Episode 83 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Friday morning episode, Alex Kozora and I get right into discussing the Pittsburgh Steelers and their ongoing search for a new head coach. Alex and I discuss the Baltimore Ravens hiring Jesse Minter as their new head coach. We also discuss Miami Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver having an in-person meeting with the Steelers on Friday. We also talk about DC Brian Flores signing a contract extension with the Minnesota Vikings and what it is likely to mean or not mean. Brian Baldinger said on Thursday that he thinks the Steelers might be interested in Miami Hurricanes HC Mario Cristobal. We discuss his report on that topic during this show. We also go over the fact that the Steelers are seemingly now down to five final candidates for their head coach job, pending any other late interviews happening. Alex and I go over the situations and rules related to the Steelers possibly having any interest in any members on the staffs of the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos during this show. The Steelers signed another player to a Reserve/Future contract on Thursday, so we make sure to recap that transaction. Should a potential duo of Mike Shula as Steelers head coach and Nate Scheelhaase as offensive coordinator be a concern to fans when it comes to potentially having the latter of the two robbed from the team in the next years? Alex and I discuss that question due to social media concern related to that topic. In the middle of this show, Alex and I discuss the future of Steelers DB Jalen Ramsey in 2026. We go over his contract, his current salary cap charge, and the decisions the Steelers will need to make concerning Ramsey's roster and option bonuses in his contract. The NFL will play their Conference Championship games on Sunday, so ahead of those two games taking place, Alex and I pick the two contests against the spreads that are listed on MyBookie.ag, a longtime sponsor of our podcast. Lastly, Alex and I go over the several emails responses we have received from listeners of the show related to the four quarterback questions we asked late during the Wednesday show. There were a ton of emails to read and while we hit a lot of them, we were unfortunately unable to get to all of them. Alex and I discuss the likelihood of the Steelers trading for San Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones to close out this Friday episode of the podcast. This 99-minute episode also discusses several other minor topics not noted in the above recap. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Doc Walker opens the show reacting to the news that Brian Flores is staying in Minnesota as the Vikings' defensive coordinator. Doc questions why Flores wouldn't want to come to Washington, where the Commanders have a bottom-half defense that clearly needs fixing. Anthony pushes back, saying Washington should actually be an attractive destination — a chance for a top defensive mind to take on a true rebuild project and turn the Commanders defense into one of the best units in the league.

Sean McDermott fired! Can the timing be worse? John Harbaugh and Kevin Stefanski just signed with the Giants and Falcons. Oops? And while everyone is sad today for Josh Allen no one has shed a tear for CJ Stroud. Is it because he tried to big bro Caleb Williams? Maybe.
