What if the same brain states people spend years chasing through psychedelics could be accessed through meditation alone, and in as little as seven days? In this fascinating solo episode, Darin Olien explores groundbreaking new research from University of California San Diego, Harvard University, Massachusetts General Hospital, and University of Montreal suggesting that meditation may produce brain patterns remarkably similar to those observed during psychedelic experiences. From the suppression of the default mode network and increases in neural complexity to neuroplasticity, endogenous opioids, and measurable biological changes in the bloodstream, Darin unpacks the science behind one of the most powerful, and completely free tools available to human beings. He also walks listeners through a practical seven-day protocol combining focused-attention meditation, Vipassana, breathwork, walking meditation, and loving-kindness practices designed to help cultivate greater awareness, emotional resilience, cognitive flexibility, and inner peace. What You'll Learn The groundbreaking UC San Diego meditation study and its surprising findings Why meditation may create brain states similar to psilocybin What the default mode network is and how it shapes everyday thinking How meditation may reduce rumination, anxiety, and self-referential thought The concept of brain criticality and cognitive flexibility Why post-meditation blood samples stimulated neuronal growth How meditation influences neuroplasticity and whole-body biology The differences between Samatha and Vipassana meditation What advanced monks are teaching scientists about consciousness The limitations and caveats of current meditation research A practical seven-day meditation protocol anyone can begin Why meditation may be one of the most powerful health interventions Meditation is not simply a relaxation practice—it appears to be a biological, neurological, and consciousness-altering intervention capable of reshaping the brain, changing the body, and transforming how we experience reality. The question is not whether the door exists. The question is whether we are willing to sit still long enough to walk through it." Join the community built for women business owners over 40 who are building real businesses on their own terms. JOIN US INSIDE HERE, no code necessary to save.Thirty years ago, Jeni Britton started an ice cream company with no money, no backing, and no roadmap. Becoming a founder later in life turned out to be the best decision she never planned. In this episode of Dear FoundHer, Lindsay talks with Jeni Britton, founder of Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams and Floura, about what it takes to build something that lasts. Jeni started her first company at 22, but she will be the first to tell you that the best entrepreneurs are in their 40s. The data backs her up. The fastest-growing segment of entrepreneurs in the United States right now is women over 45, and those businesses tend to be more durable than the ones built by founders half their age.Real founder stories rarely come with a straight line. Jeni's includes early risk, hard lessons, public crisis, reinvention, and building again with more clarity. Jeni talks about closing her first business, Scream, and what learning from failure taught her about the difference between making what excites you and building something customers return to again and again. She also walks through the 2015 Listeria recall that nearly took Jeni's down, and why she looks back on it as one of the most important moments in her company's history. Scaling challenges, crisis leadership, and knowing when to simplify your mission so your team has something clear to hold onto are all part of the conversation. She gets into the founding of Floura too, her fiber nutrition company built from produce trimmings, and what becoming a founder later in life looks like when you already know the hard lessons. The second time around, she says, you know who to build with. Her coach and her advisor from the Jeni's years are now her co-founders at Floura. That kind of peer support for entrepreneurs is part of how the work actually gets done. For female founders at any stage, if you have been telling yourself you are behind, this episode makes a pretty strong case that you are not.Episode Breakdown:00:00 Why Jeni Britton Is a Must-Hear Guest for Women Founders03:42 How Jeni Britton Started Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams with No Money and No Backing10:46 The Accidental Product That Put Jeni's on the Map12:37 Why Word of Mouth Still Beats Social Media for Growing a Business22:17 The 2015 Listeria Recall and What It Taught Her About Values Under Pressure29:44 Becoming a Founder Later in Life: Why Jeni Stepped Back and Started Over33:28 Introducing Floura: A Second Company Built from Produce Waste and Gut Health Research44:01 How to Price, Scale, and Build a Product the Right Way47:00 Why the People You Build With Are Your Most Important Business Decision51:46 Why the Best Entrepreneurs Are in Their 40sConnect with Jeni Britton:Follow Jeni on InstagramFollow Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams on InstagramFollow Floura on Instagram Subscribe to The FoundHer Files Follow Dear FoundHer on Instagram Join THE networking community for women business owners over forty, The Dear FoundHer... In this episode, Britton sits down with Taylor, a pastor, pilot, and lavender farmer from the Iowa City area, who shares his unlikely journey to becoming a church planter. Taylor opens up about a decade of trying every program, model, and strategy imaginable to reach one of the least churched communities in Iowa, only to conclude that the Sunday morning system itself is fundamentally unable to produce sold-out disciples of Jesus. With their school venue cutting them off and building costs proving prohibitive, Taylor and his church are one month away from transitioning their congregation into house churches led by co-leaders, embracing a model built on shared ownership, mutual discipleship, and dependence on the Holy Spirit rather than pastoral performance. Recorded right in the middle of the transition, this conversation is a rare and honest look at what it actually feels like to be in the thick of radical church change — the freedom, the shame, the uncertainty, and the deep conviction that Jesus is worth the risk.
Send us Fan MailIf your child can talk for days but freezes the moment a pencil hits paper, the problem might not be “motivation” or “attention.” It might be handwriting. We sit down with educator and curriculum designer Holly Britton, founder of Squiggle Squad, to unpack why handwriting instruction is a core building block for literacy, written expression, and confident learning, especially in the early elementary years. We get specific about what handwriting really is: a transcription skill that has to become automatic so kids can use their brain power for planning, organizing, and revising. Holly explains how fine motor skills and cognitive language skills develop together, why the brain treats writing-by-hand differently than speaking, and how overlapping literacy systems make handwriting more than a nice-to-have. We also talk directionality and why early motor patterns can lock in for years, plus a practical example that can help prevent b and d reversals by teaching consistent start points. Then we zoom out to what developmentally appropriate learning looks like. Holly shares the Squiggle Squad approach of teaching a small set of pre-writing strokes first through gross motor play and finger tracing, before asking young kids to form letters on paper. We also tackle a real classroom issue: kids rarely see adults handwrite anymore, and screen-based “handwriting” demos often fail to model the actual tool, grip, and movement children need to copy. If you care about early literacy, child development, fine motor skills, and practical handwriting tips for parents and teachers, you'll leave with clear next steps and a simple chalk challenge you can do today. Subscribe, share this with a parent or educator, and leave a review with your biggest handwriting question so we can cover it next.Support the showSJ CHILDS - SOCIALS & WEBSITE MASTER LISTWEBSITES- Stream-Able Live — https://www.streamable.live-COMING SOON- The SJ Childs Global Network — https://www.sjchilds.org- The SJ Childs Show Podcast Page — https://www.sjchildsshow.comYOUTUBE- The SJ Childs Show — https://www.youtube.com/@sjchildsshow- Louie Lou (Cats Channel) — https://www.youtube.com/@2catslouielouFACEBOOK- Personal Profile — https://www.facebook.com/sara.gullihur.bradford- Business Page — https://www.facebook.com/sjchildsllc- The SJ Childs Global Network — https://www.facebook.com/sjchildsglobalnetwork- The SJ Childs Show — https://www.facebook.com/SJChildsShowINSTAGRAM- https://www.instagram.com/sjchildsllc/TIKTOK- https://www.tiktok.com/@sjchildsllcLINKEDIN- https://www.linkedin.com/in/sjchilds/PODCAST PLATFORMS- Spotify — https://open.spotify.com/show/4qgD3ZMOB2unfPxqacu3cC- Apple Podcasts — https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-sj-childs-show/id1548143291CONTACT EMAIL- sjchildsllc@gmail.com

SEASON 6 EPI 13A BIG SHOUT OUT TO ADREANA JACKSON FOR HAVING DR. DELVENA ON HER SHOW, "THE BALANCE". "The Brain Love Podcast" is replaying an episode from, "The Balance" hosted by Andreana Jackson.COPIED FROM ADREANA'S BLOG:There's a quiet truth many of us are living with but rarely pause to examine: stress is no longer occasional—it's constant. This conversation brings together two medical experts, Dr. Delvena Thomas, Board-Certified Psychiatrist and Lieutenant Colonel, and Dr. Heather Britton, Board-Certified Neurologist, to explore how stress is not only experienced—but processed, stored, and expressed within the brain and body. What unfolds is both scientific and deeply human. The nervous system is divided into two key parts: the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system, which includes the autonomic system responsible for regulating involuntary functions. The sympathetic nervous system (fight-or-flight)The parasympathetic nervous system (rest-and-digest)When the body perceives stress, it activates the sympathetic system—releasing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.“Stress affects the hypothalamus and amygdala… it produces cortisol and adrenaline, leading to rapid heart rate, anxiety, and elevated blood pressure.” — Dr. Heather Britton“Prolonged stress can affect memory, concentration, and even your personality—because it impacts the prefrontal cortex.” — Dr. Heather Britton“Stress in small doses is protective. But prolonged stress tears the body down.” Dr. Delvena Thomas“We've been conditioned to believe constant stress is normal—but it's one of the reasons we see higher rates of hypertension, diabetes, and anxiety.” — Dr. Delvena ThomasOver time, stress can lead to:Anxiety and depressionHigh blood pressureSleep disturbancesCognitive declineThe body, quite literally, was never designed to stay in survival mode. From childhood environments to cultural norms, the way we process stress is often shaped early in life.“You often learn how to manage stress based on how you saw your family handle it.” — Dr. Heather BrittonDr. Thomas expands further, introducing the concept of vicarious trauma—how historical experiences, systemic challenges, and lived environments can contribute to elevated stress levels across generations. This adds an important layer: stress is not always individual—it can be collective.Interrupting Stress in Real TimeUnderstanding stress is one thing. Managing it is another. When asked how to regulate stress in the moment, Dr. Thomas offers a practical and immediate solution: breathing.“You have to break the cycle. Engage your parasympathetic system through breathing—that's what calms the body.” — Dr. Delvena ThomasIt's a reminder that sometimes the most powerful tools are also the simplest. The result? A state of continuous stimulation that can disrupt focus, sleep, and emotional balance.Mindfulness—being present and intentional—becomes increasingly difficult in a world designed for distraction.Dr. Britton highlights several ways to protect cognitive function and reduce the risk of conditions like dementia:Maintain a nutrient-rich diet (Mediterranean-style)Stay physically activeEngage sociallyContinue learning new skills“You have to keep your brain active—learning new skills creates new neural connections.” — Dr. Heather BrittonStress management, once again, plays a central role—reinforcing how interconnected mental and physical health truly are.Living in BalanceAt its core, this episode reflects what The Balance has always been about: awareness. Not eliminating stress—but understanding it.Not avoiding life—but learning how to move through it with intention.Because balance isn't something we find once. It's something we practice—daily.Final ThoughtStress may be inevitable—but living in a constant state of it is not.And sometimes, the most powerful reset begins with something as simple as a breath.

In this episode of The Independent School Podcast, Juliet Corbett is joined by Philip Britton MBE, Head of Foundation at Bolton School and Chair of HMC.In this reflective conversation, they explore the leadership lessons that only become obvious over time. In particular, they discuss the shift from relentless ‘doing' to intentional ‘being', and the judgement required when decisions are complex and sometimes represent the least bad option available.Together they explore:The shift from constant ‘doing' to the discipline of ‘being'The importance of creating space to think deeply before actingWhy clarity of purpose matters more than easy consensusHow leaders develop judgement under sustained pressureAccepting that not every decision will feel straightforwardRunning through the conversation is a strong thread of reassurance - about giving yourself permission to pause, to focus on the ‘why', and to recognise that leadership is often about steady presence rather than constant action. This episode is for you if you're a senior leader navigating difficult decisions, carrying significant responsibility, and want to reflect on how presence, clarity and judgement shape your leadership over time.Episode linksStrategic school leadership with Philip Britton MBE, Head of Foundation, Bolton School (Ep. 83)Thank you so much for listening to The Independent School Podcast. In the latest episode of Mental Gymnastics, Dr. JD Barton is joined by Jacey Vore, a two-time Big Ten Champion at the University of Michigan. Before her collegiate career, Jacey was one of the nation's top Level 10 gymnasts, earning the 2019 Level 10 National All-Around title, qualifying for the Nastia Cup three times, and finishing as a two-time runner-up in the event. At Michigan, Jacey became a consistent presence in the Wolverines' bar and beam lineups. Behind the scenes, however, she faced a significant challenge: an unexpected and intense mental block on vault that sidelined her from the event throughout her entire college career — until an emotional return on senior night, when she performed an exhibition routine. In this episode, Jacey opens up about the emotional toll of that experience — from frustration to the fear of letting others down — and shares how she worked through those challenges, ultimately finding strength, resilience, and a new perspective during her time in college.Thank you to our monthly Patreon supporters: Lee B, Cookiemaster, Happy Girl, Erica S, Semflam, Amy C, Maria L, Becca S, Cathleen R, Faith, Kerry M, Derek H, Sharon B, Randee B, MSU, Kimberly G, Lela M, Mara L, Jenna A, Alex M,, Kelsey, Lidia, Maria P, Alicia O, Cristina K, Bethany J, Diane J, Kentiemac, Marni S, Betny T, Emily C, Cathy D, Lisa T, Libby C, Thiago, Taryn M, Dana B, Jamie S, Chuck C, Je_GL, Kaitlin, Susan P, Mallory D, LFC_Hokie, Ella, Debbie, Kay, Diane J, Julie B,, Austin K, Jane, Sarah, Amy, Stephen S, Johanna T, Alison S, Kristina T, Abigail W, Ola S, Jennifer K, Kate M, Claudia, Erin L, Sarah A, Thomas B, Kihika N, Beth C, Amy, Renee PM, Ryan V, Brandon H, Tyler, Hayley B, Ben S, Kate, Danielle, ALittleUnderRotated, Dana C, Grace, Pat G , Lexi G, Laura N, Kathy, Katie A, Ruby B,, Róisín, Megan J, Emily D, Britton, Ry Shep, Reyna G, William A, MB, Jackson G, Stella, Ulo F, Noah C, Melissa H, Alexis, William M, Trish, Susie, Leslie G, Catherine B, Karlin, Laura L, Katy S, J'nia G, Kathy M, Kathy S, Okcaro, Caroline P, JD B, Cookiecutter, Ailish D, Wil D, Caroline M, kcmojojojo, Sammy S, Fabio B, Kerry H, Ricardo A, Brandon, Leah D, Margaret G, Molly, Marco B, ClemsonTigersFan, Lisa B, DSO, Sarah M, Abigail M, Grace M, Laura A, Justin D, Paola, Kendrick C, Rich A, Ty T, Nicholas S, Becky E, Annsley M, Tere, Melody M, Stacey, Erica H, Kathy, Teressa, Angela C, Bridgett C, Ashley D, Whitney J, Amanda C, Erika B & Mara R!

This week we're joined by Ava Jordan, a junior at the University of Michigan. In her freshman year, she competed on vault in all but one meet, notching a season-best 9.85 in her very first collegiate appearance. She took things up a notch during her sophomore season, consistently competing in both the vault and bars lineups and earning her first career 9.9 score on bars at the Big Ten Championships. Now in her junior season, she's making an even bigger contribution to the Wolverines by adding beam to the mix and scoring career highs on all three events: a 9.9 on vault, 9.925 on bars, and 9.95 on beam. Ava joins us to talk about what led her to Michigan, finding consistency on the competition floor, her future goals, and more.Plus, stick around after the interview for our thoughts on Iowa State cutting its gymnastics program and some other highlights as we head into postseason.Thank you to our monthly Patreon supporters: Lee B, Cookiemaster, Happy Girl, Erica S, Semflam, Amy C, Maria L, Becca S, Cathleen R, Faith, Kerry M, Derek H, Sharon B, Randee B, MSU, Kimberly G, Robert H, Lela M, Mara L, Jenna A, Alex M,, Kelsey, Lidia, Maria P, Alicia O, Cristina K, Bethany J, Diane J, Kentiemac, Marni S, Betny T, Emily C, Cathy D, Lisa T, Libby C, Thiago, Taryn M, Dana B, Jamie S, Chuck C, Je_GL, Kaitlin, Susan P, Mallory D, LFC_Hokie, Ella, Debbie, Kay, Diane J, Julie B,, Austin K, Jane, Sarah, Amy, Stephen S, Johanna T, Alison S, Kristina T, Abigail W, Ola S, Jennifer K, Kate M, Claudia, Erin L, Sarah A, Thomas B, Kihika N, Beth C, Amy, Renee PM, Ryan V, Brandon H, Tyler, Hayley B, Ben S, Kate, Danielle, ALittleUnderRotated, Dana C, Grace, Pat G , Lexi G, Laura N, Kathy, Katie A, Ruby B,, Róisín, Megan J, Emily D, Britton, Ry Shep, Reyna G, William A, MB, Jackson G, Stella, Ulo F, Noah C, Melissa H, Alexis, William M, Trish, Susie, Leslie G, Catherine B, Karlin, Laura L, Katy S, J'nia G, Kathy M, Kathy S, Okcaro, Caroline P, JD B, Cookiecutter, Ailish D, Wil D, Caroline M, kcmojojojo, Sammy S, Fabio B, Kerry H, Ricardo A, Brandon, Leah D, Margaret G, Molly, Marco B, ClemsonTigersFan, Lisa B, DSO, Sarah M, Abigail M, Grace M, Laura A, Justin D, Paola, Kendrick C, Rich A, Ty T, Nicholas S, Becky E, Annsley M, Tere, Melody M, Stacey, Erica H, Kathy, Teressa, Angela C, Bridgett C, Ashley D, Whitney J & Amanda C!
