A former baseball standout from one of Texas' top-ranked high schools, Britton made a bold pivot from the field to the stage in 2022. After an accomplished athletic career filled with championship victories and junior college play, he chose to follow his musical calling instead of pursuing sports scholarships. Music has always been in his blood. His father was a gospel singer before founding a church with Britton's mother, where Britton continues to develop his voice through worship as well as writing his own music. As far as we've come in the 50 years since Balfour Mount and Sue Britton opened the first palliative care at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Quebec, have we lost something along the way? In today's podcast we welcome some of the early pioneers in palliative care to talk about the roots of palliative care. Sue Britton was the first nurse hired on that palliative care unit. Michael Kearney on a transformational meeting in Cicely Saunders's office, with Balfour Mount at her side and a glass of sherry. Justin Sanders wants to be sure the newer generations of palliative care clinicians understand the early principles and problems that animated the founders of hospice and palliative care, including: Origins of the word “palliative” - it's not what I thought! Yes, it means “to cloak,” but there's more… Whole-person-care Total pain Healing as a process distinct from the deterioration of the body Sympomatologists The patient and family as the unit of care Our guests referenced many articles on this podcast, linked above and below. If you read just one, read Palliative Medicine - Just Another Specialty? by Kearney. I promise it's short. 2 pages. Here's a taste: …While there is an abusive and useless dimension to illness, pain and suffering which needs to be removed if at all possible, there is also potential in such experience…If we in palliative medicine fail to accept this view, a view which allows that there may also be a potential in the suffering of the dying process, if we sell out completely to the literalism of the medical model with its view that such suffering is only a problem, we will be in danger of following a pattern which could significantly limit our scope for development and lead to our becoming 'symptomatologists', within just another specialty. And love that Jim Croce choice. What's in a name? I've got a name. Inflammation isn't just about redness and irritation—it's a driving force behind premature aging. In this episode of Skin Anarchy, host Ekta sits down with Joshua Britton, CEO of Deinde, to explore how inflammation accelerates skin aging and how cutting-edge biotechnology is changing the skincare game.Britton, a scientist-turned-beauty entrepreneur, founded Deinde under the biotech powerhouse Debut, with a mission to bring lab-driven skincare to consumers. With a team of 80 scientists and a platform screening 50 billion molecules, Deinde is developing targeted solutions for inflammatory aging, a process where chronic, low-grade inflammation breaks down collagen, deepens wrinkles and worsens conditions like rosacea, eczema, and acne. One of their breakthrough discoveries? Naringenin—a potent anti-inflammatory compound that outperforms niacinamide in reducing inflammatory markers by 15 times. Clinically tested at a precise 0.45% concentration, it significantly improves skin elasticity, reduces deep wrinkles, and restores baseline skin health—without the irritation caused by higher concentrations of traditional actives.Britton also debunks skincare marketing myths, calling for science over hype. With trends like exosomes dominating the conversation, he emphasizes the importance of clinical validation over buzzwords, urging consumers to choose evidence-backed formulations over marketing gimmicks. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to future-proof their skincare routine with biotech-driven solutions that work at the molecular level. Tune in to discover how Deinde is redefining the way we fight aging—starting with inflammation. To learn more about Deinde, visit their website and social media. Jeni Britton is the founder of Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams and the new fiber bar company Floura. Jeni grew up loving food and entrepreneurship—so much so that she left college to pursue her dream of making ice cream. After years of researching and experimenting with new and innovative flavor combinations, she founded Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams in 2002. Over the next 17 years, she built Jeni's into an ice cream sensation. Today, the brand generates over $125 million in annual revenue and is known for its unique, delicious flavor combinations. By 2019, however, she was burnt out. She stepped away from the company, allowing herself time to rest and reflect. During this period, she embarked on a health journey, which led her to the world of fiber. Britton soon learned that a majority of Americans do not get enough fiber, so she set about experimenting with innovative ingredients and nutrients. The result is Floura—a new line of fiber bars featuring 12 different fiber sources from whole plants that come in flavors like Blueberry Matcha and Brambleberry Lavender. Floura launched in January through direct-to-consumer sales and Pop Up Grocer in January, selling out its initial run in just two days.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

How did early modern England understand race and how has that influenced our thinking? Race is often considered a recent construct, but Shakespeare's works—both his plays and poetry—reveal a diverse world already aware of race, identity, and difference. In this episode, Patricia Akhimie, editor of The Oxford Handbook of Shakespeare and Race, discusses the growing field of study and what we can learn from it. She is joined by two of the scholars contributing essays to the guide, Dennis Britton and Kirsten Mendoza, who are exploring the ways race, gender, and power intersect in Shakespeare's long narrative poems. Britton examines Venus and Adonis, investigating how Shakespeare's portrayal of beauty, fairness, and desire upends traditional thinking about sexuality and race. Mendoza focuses on human rights in The Rape of Lucrece, revealing how Shakespeare's use of color symbolism exposes early modern ideas about race, gender, and bodily autonomy. Both scholars illuminate how Shakespeare's works have encoded ideas about race, which continue to resonate today. The Oxford Handbook of Shakespeare and Race is an essential resource for scholars, teachers, students, and readers interested in this important area of Shakespeare research. Patricia Akhimie is Director of the Folger Institute at the Folger Shakespeare Library, Director of the RaceB4Race Mentorship Network, and Associate Professor of English at Rutgers University-Newark. She is editor of the Arden Othello (4th series), author of Shakespeare and the Cultivation of Difference: Race and Conduct in the Early Modern World and, with Bernadette Andrea, co-editor of Travel and Travail: Early Modern Women, English Drama, and the Wider World. Dennis Austin Britton is an Associate Professor of English at the University of British Columbia. His research interests include early modern English literature, Protestant theology, premodern critical race studies, and the history of emotion. He is the author of Becoming Christian: Race, Reformation, and Early Modern English Romance (2014), coeditor with Melissa Walter of Rethinking Shakespeare Source Study: Audiences, Authors, and Digital Technologies (2018), and co-editor with Kimberly Anne Coles of ‘Spenser and Race', a special issue of Spenser Studies (2021). He is currently working on a new edition of Othello for Cambridge University Press and a monograph, ‘Shakespeare and Pity: A Literary History of Race and Feeling.' Kirsten N. Mendoza is an Associate Professor of English and Human Rights at the University of Dayton. Her first book project, ‘A Politics of Touch: The Racialization of Consent in Early Modern English Literature', examines the conceptual ties that link shifting sixteenth- and seventeenth-century discourses on self-possession and sexual consent with England's colonial endeavors, involvement in the slave trade, and global mercantile pursuits. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Renaissance Drama, Shakespeare Bulletin, The Norton Critical Edition of Doctor Faustus, Race and Affect in Early Modern English Literature, and Teaching Social Justice Through Shakespeare: Why Renaissance Literature Matters Now. Job has heard enough. Speech after speech, his so-called friends have offered their wisdom—accusing, correcting, assuming they understand his suffering better than he does. But in Job 16, he fires back with words that cut through their empty comfort:" Miserable comforters are you all." He doesn't just reject their advice—he exposes their failure. Instead of bringing relief, they've only deepened his pain. And as Job turns his focus back to God, his words take on a new tone. He sees himself as crushed, attacked, even hunted by the very One he longs to trust. He speculates that God must hate him, but amid his agony, a flicker of hope remains. The Rev. Robert Moeller, Jr., pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church in Britton, SD and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ferney, SD, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Job 16. Why do the righteous suffer? That's the burning question at the heart of the book of Job—one of the most profound and challenging books in all of Scripture. From a Lutheran perspective, Job's story isn't just about a man enduring unimaginable hardship; it's about wrestling with God's will, grappling with well-meaning but misguided advice, and ultimately finding comfort in God's grace rather than human understanding. As Job's friends offer simplistic answers, Job demands the truth, and God's response reminds us of His infinite wisdom and mercy. Through it all, we see glimpses of Christ—the truly innocent sufferer—who redeems our pain and points us to the cross, where suffering meets salvation. Join us as we journey through Job, confronting tough questions about faith, suffering, and God's mysterious ways with hope grounded in Christ alone. Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations.
