Synopsis On today's date in 1909, Richard Strauss's opera Elektra had its premiere in Dresden. The libretto, a free adaptation of the grim, ancient Greek tragedy by Sophocles, was by the Austrian poet and playwright Hugo von Hofmannsthal. In ancient Greek tragedies, violence occurred off-stage, and for his libretto, Hofmannsthal honored that tradition. But the music of Strauss evoking the tragedy's violence unleashed a huge orchestra with a ferocity that stunned early listeners. After its American premiere, one New York critic wrote of “a total delineation of shrieks and groans, of tortures physical in the clear definition and audible in their gross realism . . .Snarling of stopped trumpets, barking of trombones, moaning of bassoons and squealing of violins.” Even Strauss himself later admitted Elektra (quote) “penetrated to the uttermost limits of … the receptivity of human ears,” and what he called his “green horror” opera might cause him to be type-cast as a purveyor of creepy-crawly music. And so, Strauss prudently suggested to Hofmansthal “Next time, we'll write a MOZART opera.” Almost two years later to the day, on January 26, 1911, their “Mozart” opera, Der Rosenkavalier, or the The Rose Bearer premiered. It's set in 18th century Vienna, and for this opera Strauss included anachronistic, but eminently hummable waltz tunes. The topic of RAW vs COOKED food is commonly brought up in the plant-based world. Which is superior? Should I be eating more raw food? What if I don't like to eat raw food, is eating mostly cooked okay? Are there any benefits or risks to eating strictly raw? It's good to be asking these questions! As you probably know, eating a plant-based diet is not entirely fool proof. In fact we work with people everyday, most of whom are "all in" on the plant-based lifestyle, but aren't yet achieving health goals due to the need for some nutritional fine-tuning (or also the need to address other essential determinants of health - air, water, sleep, movement, mind, etc). The short answer to the question at hand is that "raw" and "cooked" foods each have their benefits, and most people should be eating plenty of both!We will get into the finer details in today's episode.RAW vs COOKED HighlightsEating raw food can be more hydrating and nutrient dense, therefore helpful in reversing chronic conditions and promoting healthy detoxificationEating cooked food gives us access to more calorie dense nutrition like starchy vegetables, legumes, intact whole grains - essential more maintaining energyThe main risk of a raw vegan diet is mainly malnutrition due to the difficult of eating ENOUGH - though also associated with amenorrhea and other potential hormone imbalanceHow the synergy of whole food plant based nutrition debunks reductionistic science and the need to micromanage nutrition (WHOLE by T. Did Russel Wilson just destroy a promising Denver Broncos team, and set the franchise back 5-10 years?
12-28-2022 Passed Ball Show. In the final PBS broadcast of 2022, John wonders whether it is just Mets fans or whether other fans just expect the worst when it comes to things surrounding their favorite team. John now feels that somehow the Mets are going to back out of their deal with Carlos Correa. John reiterates his belief in Baker Mayfield and thinks he will be a starter in the NFL next season. Russell Wilson deserves blame for the embarrassing season the Denver Broncos are having. John suggests a contingency plan for the Broncos in the near future in case Russ is “Cooked.” With the possibilities of two (2) NFL divisions getting a postseason berth (a home playoff game) with a losing record, John suggests a reformatting of the playoff grid to give the team with the better record a hone playoff game. Finally, John criticizes the NBA media, and the players for taking the bait, when it comes to selfish NBA stat lines.

Another granular mishnah. One who swears off cooked food can still eat roasted food or undercooked food. Cooked means prepared with heat that you eat with bread, as per the practices of yore. Likewise, one who swears off food made in a pot - boiling, specifically, or moving on to any food that's cooked in a pot. Also, the porridge eaten in Babylonia, with bread. Plus, table manners and the effect of different foods.

Our guest on today's show is Giles Coren, the Times restaurant critic and columnist. We recorded with Giles for an hour, but it felt almost like we got two hours of content — and often at times, listening back to the recording, I was convinced I had my player going at double speed, such is the pace of Giles speech and mind. So, in a wide-ranging, highly entertaining conversation, we touched on the rise of the caviar 'bump', charges of nepotism, being seen as a person who ‘divides opinion', why he regrets tweeting about a kid with a drum kit, trying to save Simpsons Tavern, the debauched days of 1990s Tatler, why lobster is overrated, his advice to young writers, why Keith McNally and James Corden deserve each other, and how nobody uses the word 'Proustian' correctly.
The now .500 Sixers were brought back to life by Joel Embiid's absolutely amazing two way performance on Sunday night vs. the Utah Jazz. Embiid returned to MVP form with a near 60 point quadruple double where he picked apart the Jazz scoring at will and setting up his teammates in a way we have never seen before. He also returned to his elite form on the defensive end as a rim protector and pick and roll defender vs. one of the best early season offenses in the NBA. Part of me was extremely excited to see Embiid dominate and another part of me was concerned that we still need these kind of performances in order to win games! But the Sixers are back on track with Harden returning in 2-3 weeks and should be fighting for a top four seed in the East moving forward. After the Embiid and Sixers discussion we discussed the Golden State Warriors who are currently struggling to start the season. We talked about this being the potential end of their dynasty and whether a trade could save them before going over a handful of fake trades involving disappointing prospects James Wiseman and Jonathan Kuminga. The Los Angeles Clippers have embraced the small ball lineups to the fullest this season when Ivica Zubac has gone to the bench. Deploying no back up big man & letting fan favorite Isaiah Hartenstein walk has seemed to prove costly early on in the season for Paul George & company. Why are the LA Clippers small ball lineups not working? What can be done to fix it? Can it work? Should the Clippers play a backup big? This week, Sheil is joined by Underdog Fantasy's Josh Norris to gaze into their crystal balls and predict the future for five different teams. They discuss what the future holds for the Patriots QBs (3:00), and wonder what sort of success the Colts will have with Sam Ehlinger as their quarterback (11:00). Then, they choose the most likely ending to the Broncos' (21:00) and Giants' (28:00) seasons, and share their thoughts on whether Aaron Rodgers could be on his way out of Green Bay (38:00).
