Karben 4 Brewing, tucked away by the airport on Madison's northside, is one of the largest craft brewers in the area. Earlier this spring, they began brewing Hopalicious, a beloved hoppy pale ale and summer staple in Madison, after Ale Asylum abruptly closed.  Now, they're bringing back other classics. Ryan Koga, one of the founders of Karben 4 Brewing, fills us in on their plans.

Unlike our last episode (#65) where we recorded from Kent’s porch we are back in the Batcave… Home Sweet Home! This is part one of a two part episode where we revisit (has been almost 2 years?!) with the creators of Urban Forest Craft Brewing, but unlike last time, we’ll be discussing their long anticipated grand opening, AND...in thick of a pandemic. You just can’t make this stuff up. We sampled a VERY appropriate commercial beer from Ale Asylum of Madison WI called FVCK COVID 2.0. They get a wink of approval on this on as they incorporated the ‘V’ in COVID instead of a ‘U’ to get this through the federal label review process. A pleasant and sessionable (5% ABV) hazy IPA featuring Idaho 7, Ekuanot, and Trident hops. The brewery refers to it as a “Hazy American Pale Ale” and the flavor profile is described as being soft and bright. Brent shared with us his home brew Pale Ale creation featuring Amarillo hops as flavoring and aroma, a tasty treat as always. Alex and Heath brewers/owners of Urban Forest brought some crowlers of various beers for us to try, the first being a real nice pilsner named Glass Slipper at a very reasonable 4.8% ABV. Vampires, cats, dragons, and wizards, oh my!  This week we’re back with another episode of our favorite CCG, Magic: The Gathering.  We have a ton of fun playing Commander format Magic when we all get together, so we thought it would be fun to showcase the latest precon decks in the Commander series, Commander 17. Commander 17 focused on tribal decks, so each of these decks fit that theme.  The new Eminence ability was also introduced, which allows for these commanders to start manipulating the battlefield before they even make it there.  Teej is playing Draconic Domination, which is obviously dragon-themed.  Schnell and his cats are running Feline Ferocity.  Junior rolls with the patriarch of the Markov clan, Edgar Markov, and plays Vampiric Bloodlust.  Nelson seeks to use wizards and countermagic to run everyone’s day, so he’s playing Arcane Wizardry.  In order to show off how these decks play directly out of the box, everyone is playing a completely un-modified version of each deck. This week in beer Teej steps up his game as he’s recovering from a nasty cold and goes with Maibock from Capital Brewing, Schnell channels his inner Ronald McDonald and drinks Ocular Pat-Down from Odd Side Ales, Junior throws a jab at Teej’s deck and drinks Magic Dragon Double IPA from Hop Haus Brewing Company, and Nelson aims to make his opponents suffer as he drinks Tears of My Enemies from Ale Asylum.

Listen up, nerds, this week’s episode is all about science!  We’re playing the card drafting game Ion: A Compound Building Game, which sees players playing cards of different elements in an attempt to bind them into compounds to score more points than their opponents.  It may sound like a weird premise for a board game, but if I had this when I was in high school, I know I’d have done much better than that C (of course, studying would have helped, too).  Thankfully I loved chemistry when I took it in college, so this game was a natural step for me, as you’ll hear in my review. Ion is a great way that chem-heads and non-chem-heads alike can come together to play a quick game while still learning something.  It’s a relative inexpensive game; it retails for roughly $20. Panic, sickness, disease, and death grip the earth.  A new and seemingly unstoppable disease has broken out, and the fate of the world rests on the shoulders of four guys sitting around a card table drinking beer and insulting each other.  The debut episode of Beer’d Gamers sees the fellas, along with the help of Contingency Planner Alec Baldwin, frantically trying to save the world (and enjoy a few brews) before it’s destroyed.
