Talking sports cards, sports and life from the Mountain State of West Virginia.
On this week's episode...well...just listen. Peace, love and penny sleeves.
This week I ask why we seemingly overlook Steph Curry in the hobby. And I talk about the historic stretch that Ronald Acuna Jr is on and why I'm buying. In the main segment I tell the story of meeting WWE Hall of Famer Kane, and how a gift from a friend has given me direction in collecting wrestling cards. Enjoy!
This week I talk about WrestleMania, air my grievances with Peacock and explain the misery of being a Pirates fan. In the main segment I quoye Henry David Thoreau and talk about my single greatest card selling failure to date. When I do, you'll understand why week's episode shares a title with a 1987 pop song by Pebbles. Enjoy. Baseball fans, check out Fan Interference: https://fan-interference.com/
This week I shout out Alderson Broaddus University in Philippi, West Virginia; examine the curious case of Kike Hernandez's jersey and explain why I might not be following you on Instagram. In the main segment I turn the mail bag concept around and pose questions to you, the audience. Enjoy!
This week I talk about the underwhelming experience of ripping 2021 Topps Heritage, make fun of guys who give advice while butchering a player's name and beg eBay sellers to stop putting ridiculous descriptions in their listings - like "PSA Ready." In the main segment I talk about a couple of specific MLB prospects, giving ny thoughts but reminding you to do your own research. One great tool for that is the FanGraphs Top 100 Prospects list, which you can find here: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2021-top-100-prospects/
This week I share the story of watching hoops with a buddy, 2021-style; talk about Mookie getting paid and fanboy over a recent Twitter follower. In the main segment I talk about why I'll never put a down payment on a house with money from cards. Enjoy!
This week I remember the glory days of middleweight boxing, wish happy trails to Nick Markakis and give a shout out to @wvfighunters. I also tease a story about my lunch with an icon. In the main segment I remind you to listen to your self and not other people when it comes to building your collection. Whether you're in this for the collection or the flip, the only person you need to make happy is yourself. Enjoy!
This week I share a tale of woe from eBay, tell you why the All Star Game was important for Giannis and talk about my new life philosophy: "Things are until they aren't. Or they aren't until they are." In the main segment I talk in-depth about my philosophies and strategies when it comes to prospecting baseball players and cards. Enjoy!
This week I revisit my thoughts on Renee Montgomery, who is now a role model, I shout out Trey Mancini for his perseverance and I point out that a former phenom is back on track. In the main segment I talk about lessons that I learned at 13 that I can now apply to card collecting as an adult, fondly recalling the first time I picked up a copy of Beckett and the power of seeing card values in print. Enjoy!
This week on the show I remind you that bad things don't go away when the national media stops caring about a tragedy, I talk about sticking to your guns when it comes to pricing and selling cards and I go long on the Fernando Tatis Jr. contract. Spoiler alert: I think it's great for the game of baseball. But it can also be great for the hobby if we pay attention and think like an owner. Just don't think like Seattle's ownership...yikes. Enjoy!
This week I pay homage to the greatest women's basketball player to ever come out of West Virginia, tell the story of meeting one of my favorite wrestlers in a hotel hallway and give me initial review of 2021 Topps Series 1. In the main segment I jump up on my soapbox and share my thoughts on how to overcome hobby fatigue. The short version - block out the noise, but listen to the episode for the longer version. Enjoy!
This week I recount the tale of getting scammed on a Jeter rookie, laugh about young hustlers in my comments and shout out WVU legend Keith Tandy for getting a Super Bowl ring. In the main segment I talk about finding your passion in the hobby and how doing so will make it easier to do the work required to get where you want to be. Enjoy!
This week I lament the trade of Nolan Arenado to the Cardinals, remember a former WVU hoops great and wax nostalgic about the old days of the Atlantic 10. In the main segment I remind you to collect what you like, make your own plan and don't let yourself be brought down by the noise in the hobby. Get in where you fit in and focus on what makes you happy. Enjoy!
This week I throw shade at Shaq, remember Hank Aaron and try to prepare you for the onslaught of "Brady vs. Mahomes" narratives that we're about to be force fed. I also share the discovery that a West Virginia native who appeared in an 80's comedy classic was also a pretty good football player. In the main segment I break down some numbers for why I feel Stadium Club is overlooked in the hobby and I talk a lot about Mookie Betts and Fernando Tatis Jr. Enjoy! In social media/content shoutouts: @sarfa_sportscards is now @theslabtalk. Great IG and now a really good podcast. Give him a follow and a listen @waxpackhero is always solid content @conrads_sportscards on IG does a great breakdown of the legends vs. prospects basketball card market
This week I talk about how many of us were wrong about the NFL card market a few months ago, reference a classic Chappelle's Show sketch in relation to James Harden and Kevin Durant and give another example of why Luka's ceiling is unknown. I also talk a lot about baseball. No really. A lot. I'm excited for the season to start and for the cards to come out. Enjoy! On Instagram give @sarfa_sportscards a follow, the account is incredibly informative and believes in transparency. For my West Virginia and WVU folks - or anyone interested in a very cool niche collector - follow @flo_cards. It's the best WVU collection I've ever seen.
Sorry, gang! No catchy title this week. I talk about my lack of passion for the NFL, the impact of the Lindor trade in baseball and question whether or not the disrupted NBA off season contributes to injury. Today's main topic, though, are my hobby goals for 2021, as inpired by The Luka Show on YouTube. Enjoy!
This week I kick off 2021 by kicking the Fighting Irish while they're down, remind you that the NBA season will be a long and winding road and share some insights on eBay best practices. The short version - be an engaged and responsive seller. In the main segment I talk about my favorite Panini basketball sets and why I like them. Spoiler Alert: it's most definitely NOT Prizm. Cheers to a new year and new hobby adventures!
This week I look back on 2020 and talk about the winding road that led me to a point where I've recorded 23 episodes of a podcast I had no intention of starting at this time last year. And I say thank you to the people who have made this year better. In light of the Josh Bell trade, Ben Cherington and Bob Nutting are decidedly not on that list. Enjoy!
This week I talk about the godfather of modern baseball analytics, Bill James, and his view on successful organizations. And I once again make reference to HBO's The Wire, the greatest show in modern television history. I also shout out Kyle from the Wax Museum Podcast for his ongoing effort to call out obnoxious solicitations from breakers. Find him on Instagram @waxmuseumpodcast. Here's the Bill James blog post that spurs this week;s main segment: https://www.billjamesonline.com/the_mets_new_gm/
In this week's episode I air my grievances with the 1984 film Footloose, eulogize on of Bo Jackson's heroes and admit to not knowing yet another NBA player who was born in West Virginia. In the final segment I share one of my core philosophies, one that I use in the hobby and my day to day life. I also express my curiosity over the Talen Horton Tucker Market and beat you over the head with why you should be subscribed to Sports Card Analytics! Seriously...subscribe - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyHwy6GwBufcf84tqNXj86w Subscribe Rate Review Connect with me. Let's have a conversation. Peace, love and penny sleeves!
In this week's episode I talk about MLB equating Covid-19 to hail, I opine that Deshaun Watson deserves better and I reveal that I was shook to find out that a recent NBS All-Star was born in West Virginia and I had no idea. I also end the show by asking questions about why we're here and reminding you to check in on folks you interact with. Check below for links and shoutouts: The Atlanta Braves didn't do so bad financially, according to FanGraphs - https://blogs.fangraphs.com/what-the-braves-can-tell-us-about-mlb-financial-losses-in-2020/ @wild_kyote is a really great nature photographer - https://www.instagram.com/wild_kyote/ @kin.kinsey runs a great YouTube channel - https://www.youtube.com/c/beansballcardblog/featured
In this week's episode I talk about the impact of Milwaukee's ability (or lack thereof) to sign Giannis to an extension, I predict George Springer becomes a Blue Jay and remind you that all of your sports heroes are just flawed human beings. I also breakdown eBay strategies and use a @StackingSlabs Instagram post as a jumping off point for a discussion on generational differences in the hobby. Reminder: we can all learn from each other in this community. Also, I talk about inspiration I've received via Instagram from @sarfa_sportscards. Enjoy!
In this week's episode I talk about the uncertainty of the NBA Draft, remind you that MLB owners are not poor(no matter what they say to the contrary) and I hop in the time machine to talk about the days when the NFL Cardinals used to play in St. Louis and Queen Latifah was a Grammy winning hip-hop artist. I also talk about the greatest current example of brand building in the hobby and we talk #HobbyUnity. Enjoy!
In this week's episode, I pray to the basketball gods in an effort to make the Harden-to-Brooklyn trade a reality, I apologize for the behavior of insufferable Steelers fans and I share stories that emphasize why I love my home state. In the main segment, I talk about not stressing over the hobby. Instead, focus on what makes you happy and participate in whatever way is comfortable for you. The Hobby is a big tent, there's room for all of us underneath.
In this week's episode I tell you why the Antonio Brown narrative in Tampa Bay is a sham and talk about why I'm taking a hiatus from buying cards, rather I'm focusing on moving things out. Also, I talk about my participation in Jordan's hip-hop video on the Sports Card Analytics YouTube channel. In doing so I talk about why West Virginia means so much to me and why I try to shine the light on our success stories. If you're interested in such things, here's the link to the store that sells the shirt I was wearing in my segment of the video:
In this week's episode I discuss why this off-season could be a tipping point in Major League Baseball, I air my decades long grievance against Notre Dame and talk about a very significant pickup for my collection. I also detail the 33 year old sports card trade that haunted me until this past weekend. *********************************************** Subscribe Rate Review Instagram and Twitter @wvcardboard wvcardboard.com wvcardboard@gmail.com Connect with me. I also shout from the rooftops about Justin Herbert's performance against the Jaguars and talk about why virtual conferences are a drag. I also call myself a low budget high roller and remind listeners to just be yourself in this hobby. This week's epiphany brought to you by Hunter Renfrow and HBO's The Wire. Also, I talk about Joe Morgan and the simplicity of vintage rookie cards, I compare the Astros to pro wrestling heels and I emphasize the importance of maiing human connections through the hobby and social media. Social media shout-outs to: @CD_Cardz - WV Born, now in Tampa, FL @fishtunechi - Collecting cards in Missouri with his son, keeping his grandmother's memory alive "Collectors buy cards that we plan to keep. Better cards appear and we sell the originals to fund the new. We have the opportunity to do this because the cards we bought increase in value. I've always been confused by the terminology. This is investing me." - @stackingslabs Enjoy the World Series!! Subscribe Rate Review Instagram and Twitter @wvcardboard wvcardboard.com wvcardboard@gmail.com Connect with me. In this episode I reference a 1996 Jay-Z song and caution against hustling too hard. I also talk at length about the newest addition to my PC, tell Carlos Correa why he's full of it and point out that JaVale McGee has as many NBA championships as Larry Bird. This week's show lacks a major topic or point of focus. Instead, it's a collection of smaller thoughts generated by my transition in the hobby from "guy who collects a lot of crap" to "guy who wants a more curated collection." Also, I show love to Jordan with Sports Card Analytics, confess my jealousy over G's collection of Curry cards on The Luka Show and, once again, point out that continuing to reward companies for their bad business practices is a losing proposition. I also show great restraint by not laughing at the demise of the St. Louis Cardinals at the hands of Tatis & Machado.
In this week's episode I talk about Juan Soto, why I hate the St. Louis Cardinals, MLB jersey sales and I stake my claim as the President of the Justin Herbert Fan Club. In the main segment I recount the story of buying two beautiful vintage baseball cards in a diner parking lot. The bigger takeaway, though, was not the cards themselves. The experience served as a reminder, one that I feel we all need from time to time.
In this episode I talk about lovely Fall weather, cool pulls from a Topps Archive hobby box and how I'm rethinking my NFL strategies based on risk aversion. I also talk about a couple of MLB legends nearing the end of their careers who I'm investing in now so that I'm prepared when they head to Cooperstown. In content shoutouts I hype the following guys: Sports Card Investigator The Luka Show All The Murrays Sports Card Analytics As always, find me on Instagram and Twitter, @wvcardboard. And if you're so inclined, shoot me an email: wvcardboard@gmail.com
This week I take a deep dive into the different elements of my investing and collecting strategies. I take the "L" on Hakeem Butler, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals, I name check Jedd Gyorko, Steve Yeager and RJ Reynolds. And, ultimately, I lay out all of the things I'm doing with my cards. The whole thing takes about as long as an episode of Law & Order without the commercials. Enjoy.
In this week's episode I talk about Donovan Mitchell, point out why Richard Jefferson is an idiot and eulogize Minor League Baseball. In the main segment I talk about the nuanced difference in investing in baseball as opposed to basketball and, most likely, football. And I analyze rookie card prices of guys in all three major sports at four different stages of their careers - hype guy, promising player on the come up, veteran at the tail end of a great career and a Hall of Famer. Some results were expected, but there are definitely opportunities to be had.
Disclaimer: This week's episode takes on a serious tone. However, if you make it through I think you'll enjoy it. In this week's episode I use the NBA work-stoppage and the death of Chadwick Boseman as a jumping off point to discuss race in America. I tie it back to the hobby by sharing some pieces from my collection of first cards of the players who integrated each Major League team. I talk specifically about four men: Hank Thompson, Bob Trice, Ossie Virgil Sr. and Pumpsie Green. Content shoutouts to Jordan at Sports Card Analytics, Brett at Stacking Slabs, as well as the Cards Anonymous podcast and Wax Pack Hero. This week's content MVP, though, was The Luka Show and G's take on bubble life. Unsolicited Endorsement of the Week: Go read and subscribe to Craig Calcaterra's new daily newsletter, Cup of Coffee. Craig is a great writer who gives the best daily analysis there is on MLB. He's also funny and smart and a role model for me. He's striking out on his own after years of working for big media companies. I would humbly ask that you support his efforts. We need good, independent writing in the sports world. Follow me on Instagram, @wvcardboard
In this week's episode, I tell a story about meeting Justin Townes Earle, discuss Luka's game 4 performance and I debut brand new theme music for the show. Unwrotten rules in baseball are stupid and Fernando Tatis Jr. is the real deal. In the main segment, The American Dream Dusty Rhodes tells us about hard times and I put that into a hobby perspective.
In this episode I talk about my weekend trip to a card show, my first in the COVID-19 era. I talk about the trade I made and the things I saw. I also make the first of what I can only assume will be hundreds of reference's to HBO's The Wire. Content shout outs to @thesportscardpt on Instagram. The Luka Show on YouTube and the Wax Museum Podcast. The main topic this week concerns Cardboard Curmudgeons, a phrase coined by Brett at Stacking Slabs. The Hobby is a big tent, there's room for all of us underneath. People will come and go, live and let live...but understand the landscape to better navigate it.
In this week's episode I talk about my high school chemistry teacher, Ernie Mills and DeAndre Jordan. I talk about the emotional side of card collecting. And I wade into the PSA/BGS/SGC debate and share my view on market forces and how we can influence them.
Excited to sit down and record episode two of my new podcast...even if this is a re-recording from an episode I screwed up on Sunday. In the main segment I break down who I'm investing in for the upcoming (hopefully) NFL season and why I think there's opportunity in Indianapolis. Before that I shout out G from The Luka Show on YouTube (@the luckyshow05 on Instagram) and also talk about why I'm not in on TJ Warren or Caris LeVert.
In this episode, I introduce myself. Everybody has an origin story, from Luke Skywalker to Lebron James. This is mine. I talk about how I got into collecting, how I got back in as an adult and what my goals are for the show. I also shout out some of the content creators who've inspired me: @stackingslabs, @cahillcards, @thesportscardpt, @sportscard_analytics and @sportscardinvestigator.
