The 1975 Cincinnati Reds, known as the Big Red Machine, were at the height of their dominance and delivered one of the most iconic seasons in baseball history. Managed by Sparky Anderson, the team finished with a 108–54 record, cruising to the National League West title and eventually capturing the World Series crownThe roster was loaded with star power, including Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench, and Tony Pérez—each contributing in different ways to the team's relentless offense and cohesive chemistry. Joe Morgan, in particular, had an MVP season, showcasing a rare combination of power, speed, and plate discipline. Pete Rose continued to be the heartbeat of the lineup, hitting .317 and playing with unmatched intensity. Bench and Pérez delivered consistent power, while George Foster and Dave Concepción added key production and strong defense. On the pitching side, the staff wasn't overpowering, but it was highly effective. Don Gullett, Gary Nolan, and Fred Norman anchored the rotation, while Rawly Eastwick emerged as a dominant force out of the bullpenThe Reds' balance, depth, and aggressive base running made them a nightmare matchup for opponents. After sweeping the Pirates in the NLCS, Cincinnati faced the Boston Red Sox in a dramatic World Series that went seven games. Game 6, featuring Carlton Fisk's legendary walk-off home run, remains one of the most famous in MLB historyThe Reds responded with a Game 7 victory, securing their first World Series title since 1940.

The cattle feeding business has not been a smooth ride throughout the years, but Joe Morgan and now his son, Grant, have found ways to ride the waves by putting the needs of their customers first. This episode covers more than four decades of cattle feeding history — the high interest rates of the '80s, the poor beef demand of the '90s, and so on. At every junction, Poky Feeders had “page turning” events that allowed them to survive and grow. They'll tell you what they need most from Angus breeders and what kind of cattle they need in their feedyard. Hear from the father-son duo just ahead of Joe's induction into the Cattle Feeders Hall of Fame. HOSTS: Miranda Reiman and Mark McCully GUESTS: Joe and Grant Morgan, Poky Feeders Joe Morgan farmed and fed cattle after earning an animal science degree from Iowa State University. In 1985, he moved to Garden City to manage Poky Feeders. Its original capacity was 17,000 and under his and now his son, Grant's, leadership it has grown to 103,000 head. Growing up around the feedyard, Grant first chose to pursue other paths for his education before coming back to the feedyard. He took over as manager six years ago and has created an internship program and paths for employee growth along with leading their most recent expansion efforts. Joe has served on several committees with the Kansas Livestock Association and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. He was a founding member of U.S. Premium Beef, and he currently serves as vice chairman of their board. In 1973 the Dodgers had an 8 1/2 game lead in the Cincinnati Reds before the Big Red Machine hunted them down and won the division. So in the offseason, the Dodgers acquired Jimmy Wynn... and relief pitcher Mike Marshall... and they both made quite the difference... The Toy Cannon provided a big bat in the middle of the lineup and Marshall was sensational out of the pen. Pitching in a MLB record 106 games including 13 in a row at one point, the relief pitcher was on the cover of the 8/12/74 issue of Sports Illustrated because of a season that would see him notch 208 1/3 innings pitched while winning 15 and saving another 21 en route to the Cy Young Award, and helping the Dodgers capture the NL West crown over Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan and the Reds. And while the Reds had a surplus of stars, so did the Dodgers... with a pitching staff of Don Sutton, Tommy John, Andy Messersmith and Marshall and an infield of Ron Cey, Bill Russell, Davey Lopes and Steve Garvey that would play together for a record 8 1/2 seasons. Cey would make his first of 6 All-Star teams in 1974 and manned the hot corner for the Dodgers until leaving for Chicago after the 1982 season but not before amassing the 2nd most HR's in L.A. Dodgers history with 228. The Penguin talks about being a part of the most successful infield in baseball history, why the Reds are in the Hall of Fame and he and his Dodger teammates are not, what it was like to go up against his boyhood idol, Willie Mays and much more when he joins us for a candid conversation on the Past Our Prime podcast. If you enjoyed baseball in the 70's, you'll enjoy this chat with a player that embodies everything there was about the National League and baseball back in 1974. Learn more about your ad choices. SERIES 2 EPISODE 78: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: The democracy will certainly not survive Donald Trump but I am now wondering if it has any chance of surviving Sarah Wallace, Patricia Millett, Cornelia Pillard, and Brad Garcia and if you don't know who they are, they are the latest people on the latest list of supposed liberals and supposed officers of the court who could get us all KILLED. Millett seems to be the most clueless of the three DC Appeals Court dilettantes who first STAYED the gag order issued against Trump in the Election Subversion case and then yesterday conducted the in-person hearing and all but announced that they WILL significantly limit the order because apparently when Trump starts ignoring laws he doesn't like and jailing judges he doesn't like, these idiots somehow think they will be immune because they were so fair to him back there in November 2023. Judge Millett seemed to base her nitwitted reaction to the two hours of oral arguments on the impact of the gag order on…presidential debates. “He has to speak ‘Miss Manners' while everyone else is throwing targets at him? It would be really hard in a debate, when everyone else is going at you full bore. Your attorneys would have to have scripted little things you can say.” Miss Manners. Trump has to speak ‘Miss Manners.' Do you get the same feeling I do that Judge Millette has no earthly clue WHO Dementia J. Trump is? Do you get the OTHER same feeling that I do that it has not occurred to, and will NEVER occur to, Judge Millette that so far there have been THREE presidential debates in the Republican primary and Trump hasn't shown up to any of them and there is no reason to expect he'd have the guts to show up to one in the general election. And THEN there is Judge Sarah Wallace and I'm not sure she didn't even harm the country MORE than Judge “Miss Manners” and Judge “I Would Assume” did. Judge Wallace heard the 14th Amendment disqualification case and at the same time that she ruled quote “that Trump incited an insurrection on January 6, 2021, and therefore ‘engaged' in insurrection within the meaning of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment” she then superseded the Amendment itself in as remarkable an act of judicial cowardice as I've ever seen. “After considering the arguments on both sides,” wrote Judge Wallace, “the Court is persuaded that ‘officers of the United States' did not include the PRESIDENT of the United States. It appears to the Court that for whatever reason the drafters of Section 3 did not intend to include a person who had only taken the Presidential Oath,” unquote. So she ordered him onto the Colorado primary ballot instead of saying “Yeah, I'm thinking they meant to include PRESIDENTS because otherwise having just survived the Civil War they decided to make sure Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee and Nathan Bedford Forrest could NOT run for anything EXCEPT President of the United States rather than showing some guts, Judge Wallace folded. The people who could DO something and they actually divide into two categories and two categories ONLY: Judges who are too effete to do anything and judges who are too scared to do anything. B-Block (22:20) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: How did Argentina elect as its new president Jason Bateman playing Wolverine? The late great Joss Ackland. And the newest housing requisite: Built-in Dog Showers? (26:15) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Just a Fox News typo, no doubt: "Osama Biden Laden"; Moms For Liberty's Philly chief is a registered sex offender; Senator Mike Lee launches the worst January 6th gaslighting ever. C-Block (32:20) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Milo in Tennessee (33:30) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I anchored the telecast of the 1992 Baseball Expansion draft, 31 years ago this week. 9-19-2023 Passed Ball Show. John spends this program making a case of why it would have been beneficial for the New York Mets to get All Star relief pitcher Edwin Diaz into a game or two THIS season as long as he is fully recovered from his injury, Among reasons outside the fact that he is being paid to pitch, John also analyzes why it makes more sense for the 2024 Mets to get him into a game or two this season. John spends a little bit of time talking about the decision made by Michigan State to fire Head Coach Mel Tucker and the fact that the school cares a lot more about not having to pay the $70 million owed to him than the victim and the reason they have "cause" to let him go. On today's #SavingSportsHIstory segment, John talks about Lefty Grove, Jackie Robinson winning the "Jackie Robinson Award," Denny McLain, Mickey Mantle, Jerry Rice, Roger Angell, Duke Snider, Joe Morgan, Hugo Bedzek, and makes a Baseball Hall of Fame case for the late Maury Wills.

Yesterday, Pete Alonso had the 186th game in Mets history with a home run and a caught stealing. It was the first time that Alonso has done this in his career, which makes him the 91st Met to post such a performance. No Met had homered and been caught stealing in a game since last July 4, when Brandon Nimmo did it in Cincinnati. Nimmo has had three of these games, and the Mets have won nine of the 10 games since the start of the 2019 season where they had a player go deep but also get nabbed. The somewhat dubious team record for a single-season is four, set by Lee Mazzilli in 1978 and matched by Darryl Strawberry in 1985. Strawberry is the franchise leader at 16 games with a homer and caught stealing, with Mazzilli at 11, followed by Howard Johnson at eight, José Reyes at 7, and David Wright and Joel Youngblood at five apiece. What Alonso would like to have done yesterday is have his seventh career game with a homer and a steal, which would snap a tie with Lenny Dykstra and tie Lindor and Cleon Jones for 11th on the Mets' franchise list. Ahead of them, and more in Lindor's sights in the years to come? Strawberry's team record of 35 should be safe for a while, with Johnson (28), Reyes (27), and Wright (20) all far above the rest of the field. Then it's Carlos Beltrán and Mookie Wilson (13), Kevin McReynolds (12), Tommie Agee (10), and Mike Cameron and Dave Kingman (9).According to Stathead, the career leaders for homer/steal games are…* Barry Bonds, 102* Rickey Henderson, 87* Álex Rodriguez, 65* Bobby Bonds, 61* Joe Morgan, 60* Willie Mays, 58* César Cedeño, 48* Beltran, 44* Bobby Abreu, 43* Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines, Alfonso Soriano, Larry Walker, 42* Strawberry, 40And to get back where we started, the leaders for homer/caught stealing combo games…* Mays, 29* Babe Ruth, 27* Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, 25* Bobby Bonds, 24* Henderson, 22* José Canseco, 21* Cedeño, Lou Gehrig, Mike Schmidt, 20* Morgan, Gary Sheffield, Strawberry, 19One more note on Alonso. As he tied Keith Hernandez on the Mets' career RBI list, he also tied Mex in homer/caught stealing games. It was also against the Pirates, but at Three Rivers Stadium, on April 21, 1987: Hernandez was caught stealing by the battery of Brian Fisher and Junior Ortiz, but took Bob Walk deep for an insurance run that helped lessen the impact of Barry Bonds' three-run homer off Bob Ojeda in the eighth. Hernandez singled and scored in the ninth, and Jesse Orosco closed out the 9-6 contest, getting Bobby Bonilla to ground out to end it with Bonds, who would have represented the tying run had he gotten the chance to hit, left on deck. Friday Afternoon, October 5th, 1979 @ Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, PA After two thrilling extra-inning victories in Cincinnati, the Pirates are headed home on the precipice of another World Series berth. The 'Family', as they are referred to by their loyal fans, have excelled in all facets of the game: great starting pitching (Candelaria and Bibby), tremendous defense (Foli, Madlock, and Ott), timely hitting (Stargell and Parker), and clutch bullpen heroics (Tekulve, Jackson, and unexpectedly Don Robinson!). Pittsburgh manager Chuck Tanner is confident those trends will continue, sending a veteran righty to the mound, Bert Blyleven (12 - 5 3.60 ERA 237 IP). The Dutch-born hurler will deliver one of the best games of his storied Hall-of-Fame career in his first career postseason start. Reds manager John McNamara is hoping to keep the Pirates big bats at bay with young righty Mike LaCoss (14 - 8 3.50 ERA 205 IP), a 23 year old All-Star in just his second season in the big leagues. If the youngster runs into early trouble, expect McNamara to turn to veteran lefty Fred Norman (11 - 13 3.64 ERA 195 IP). If things don't go the Reds way, it will likely be the final time that Joe Morgan dons a Cincy uniform, signaling an end to the era of the Big Red Machine. Tune in to another exciting conclusion of a championship series. Audio clips from joeydbball Youtube. There’s exceptions.” NBASL – NBA Summer League Last Night Chicago Bulls 107, Sacramento Kings 99 Tonight Detroit Pistons vs. Toronto Raptors, 6:00 p.m. (at Thomas and Mack Center, Las Vegas) Indiana Pacers vs. Oklahoma City Thunder, 7:30 p.m. (at Cox Pavilion, Las Vegas) NBA – Flopping, challenge rules changed by NBA’s Board of Governors The NBA’s Board of Governors approved two rule changes for the coming season Tuesday. One change gives coaches a second challenge if their first one is successful. The other will mean a technical foul will be called against players who flop. The challenge rule change is something that coaches have wanted for some time. Coaches who challenge a call and are successful will get the chance to make a second challenge. Teams must have a timeout in order to call for a challenge; that timeout would not be retained even if a coach won that first challenge. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Today New York Liberty at Indiana Fever, 12:00 p.m. Connecticut Sun at Chicago Sky, 12:00 p.m. WNBA – WNBA All-Star skills competition now features teammates partnering up The WNBA is changing its All-Star skills challenge with the new format pitting four sets of teammates against each other in a head-to-head competition. The league announced the two-round competition on Tuesday that will include a timed obstacle course relay competition that showcases players’ agility, dribbling, passing and shooting skills. The four teams are Atlanta’s Allisha Gray and Cheyenne Parker, who are both making their All-Star debuts; Dallas’ Arike Ogunbowale and Satou Sabally; New York’s Sabrina Ionescu and Courtney Vandersloot; and Las Vegas’ Chelsea Gray and Kelsey Plum. NCAAFB – Northwestern retains assistants after firing coach Pat Fitzgerald Northwestern has decided to retain its assistant coaches and support staff for the 2023 season after it fired head coach Pat Fitzgerald amid a hazing scandal. Athletic director Derrick Gragg informed the coaches and staff of the decision during a meeting. There was no announcement by the school when it comes to the leadership of the program after Fitzgerald’s dismissal. The first game of the season is Sept. 3 at Rutgers. The 48-year-old Fitzgerald was fired on Monday by Northwestern President Michael Schill. Tennis – Elina Svitolina has the Ukraine war and her baby in mind as she beats Iga Swiatek Elina Svitolina is back in her first Grand Slam semifinal since 2019. She got there at Wimbledon by beating No. 1 Iga Swiatek in three sets Tuesday. Things are much different for Svitolina now than they were the last time she made it to the final four at a major tournament. She is a mother who gave birth to a daughter nine months ago and returned to the tour three months ago. And she is concerned about the war in her native Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia in February 2022. Svitolina will face Marketa Vondrousova for a berth in Saturday’s final. Novak Djokovic will play Jannik Sinner in the men’s semifinals. Golf – Saudi investment in PGA Tour will top $1 billion. And Norman will exit as CEO A PGA Tour executive has told Congress that Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund agreed to invest more than $1 billion in a new commercial entity controlled by the tour. Ron Price, the tour’s chief operating officer, also said at a hearing Tuesday that Greg Norman will be ousted as the CEO of LIV Golf if the business deal between the Saudis and the tour is finalized. The Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations is looking into the negotiations between the tour and the Saudis and the geopolitical implications of Saudi investment in American sports. However, there was no indication that Congress would block the tour from going into business with the Saudi Public Investment Fund. This is the first of a two-part conversation with Claire Smith, a pioneer for women and journalists of color. She discusses breaking barriers while covering baseball for 39 years, including her worst day: When the San Diego Padres physically removed her from their clubhouse during the 1984 National League playoffs. Hear how Steve Garvey helped her in that moment, and how Claire's love of baseball powered her through a career that led to her being honored at Cooperstown in 2017. Claire shares tales of George Steinbrenner, Billy Martin and Reggie Jackson from her time covering the Bronx Zoo Yankees. Claire also recalls her years of working with Joe Morgan, and how Jackie Robinson influenced her career, which has impacted so many others. Smith spent 32 years in the newspaper industry, starting in Pennsylvania at the Bucks County Courier Times. In 1979, she moved to The Philadelphia Bulletin, where she mostly covered college basketball and football. When that paper folded in 1982, she was hired by The Hartford Courant. By mid-season that year, she was put on the New York Yankees beat, making her the first woman to cover a Major League Baseball team, full-time. Claire covered the Yankees for five years before serving as the Courant's national baseball columnist for three years. She became the New York Times' first national baseball columnist in 1990 and held that role for eight years. In 1998, she moved to the Philadelphia Inquirer, where she was a columnist and assistant sports editor until 2007. Claire left newspapers in July 2007 to become a coordinator editor and baseball remote news editor at ESPN. She worked for the “Sunday Night Baseball” crew and the production team on MLB game broadcasts until November 2021. In December 2016, Smith was named the 68th recipient of the Baseball Writers Association of America's Career Excellence Award (formerly known as the J.G. Taylor Spink Award) – the highest honor a baseball writer can receive. She was the first woman to win the award, and the fourth African American, joining Sam Lacy, Wendell Smith and Larry Whiteside. Claire was honored at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum's annual induction in July 2017. She was also presented the 2017 “Robie Award” for Lifetime Achievement by the Jackie Robinson Foundation. Smith was named the inaugural winner of the Sam Lacy-Wendell Smith Award for the Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism at the University of Maryland in 2013. Other milestones: Sports Journalist of the Year from the National Association of Black Journalists (1997); the Mary Garber Pioneer Award from the Association for Women in Sports Media (2000); the Sam Lacy Award at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (2010); and SAbR's 2021 Dorothy Seymour Mills Lifetime Achievement Award. Smith was a member of the NABJ Hall of Fame's Class of 2021. Claire was twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, and she was winner of three New York Times Publishers' Awards. A 1979 graduate of Temple University, Smith returned to her alma mater in July 2021 as an assistant professor with Klein School of Media and Communications. With the assistance of the Black Women in Sports Foundation, Smith has long awarded Temple students The Bernice A. Smith scholarship, named after her mother, a Jamaican immigrant and Temple alum. In 2014, Temple honored Claire with a Lew Klein Alumni in the Media Award and inducted her into the School of Media and Communication Hall of Fame. In October 2021, Temple announced the creation of The Claire Smith Center For Sports Media. Claire co-directs the center with John DiCarlo, managing director of student media at Temple.
