Why Staying Busy Is Keeping You Stuck with Peter Economy

If 82% of people lack a time management system and the average worker spends half their day on low-value tasks, what's the real cost of doing nothing about it? In this episode, Brandon Laws sits down with bestselling author Peter Economy, who has written over 140 books, to dig into his latest release, Wait, You Need a Win? The Essential Guide to Time Management, Productivity, and Powerful Habits That Get Things Done. From the neuroscience behind habit formation to the Rocks, Pebbles, and Sand framework, Peter shares practical, immediately actionable strategies for anyone who has ever ended the day wondering where the time went. If you've been meaning to get more intentional about how you work and live, this conversation is your sign. Key Timestamps: [00:01] Welcome Back, Peter Economy Brandon introduces return guest Peter Economy and his latest book on time management and productivity. [00:54] Why 82% of People Still Don't Have a System Peter explains why most people avoid time management and how ingrained habits keep us stuck in low-value routines. [02:17] The Real Cost of Poor Time Management Research shows the average employee loses about 500 hours per year to unproductive work. Peter breaks down what that means for individuals, teams, and organizations. [03:24] Phones, Interruptions, and the 23-Minute Rule The average person picks up their phone 96 times a day, and a single interruption costs over 23 minutes of refocus time. The numbers are hard to argue with. [07:03] The Paradox of Time We think we have all the time in the world. Peter explains why that illusion is one of the biggest obstacles to getting anything meaningful done. [08:26] Working from Home Like You Mean It Remote and hybrid workers face a unique challenge: the people around them don't always see them as "really working." Peter shares how to establish non-negotiable work boundaries at home. [10:50] Designing Habits Using Neuroscience New habits mean new brain pathways. Peter walks through how to intentionally build routines that actually stick, starting small and building over time. [13:18] The Right Way to Use a To-Do List More tasks do not mean more productivity. Peter makes the case for limiting your daily list to three to five high-priority goals and why that constraint is a feature, not a limitation. [16:03] David Allen's Getting Things Done Framework Peter explains the five-step GTD methodology (capture, clarify, organize, reflect, engage) and why it remains one of the most effective systems for managing commitments. [17:46] Why "No" Is a Time Management Strategy People-pleasing has deep roots, and learning to say no is harder than it sounds. Peter shares how taking on one too many projects changed his approach for good. [21:21] Protecting Your Calendar from Meetings You Don't Need Research suggests around 76% of meetings are ineffective. Peter offers a framework for protecting your time by declining meetings that don't warrant your presence. [23:05] The Rocks, Pebbles, and Sand Framework One of the most visual concepts in the book: why tackling your biggest priorities first is the only way to make sure they actually get done. [25:14] Rest as a Productivity Tool Powering through is overrated. Peter makes the case for taking real breaks, getting outside, and prioritizing sleep as essential parts of a high-performance routine. [27:17] Using AI to Save Time From Otter AI for meeting transcription and action items to organizing project files in Claude, Peter and Brandon trade practical tips for using AI tools to reclaim hours in your week. [31:01] Is It Your System, or Is It Your Work? Peter closes with the most important question: if you're chronically unproductive, the problem might not be your framework. It might be that you're not doing work you actually care about. S4 – EP16 – “This One Was Different”: Donna Rice-Hannam on Hospital Failures, Grief and Surviving Without Mark

Widowed AF

Play Episode Listen Later May 18, 2026 58:21

In this episode Rosie Moss speaks with Donna Rice-Hannam, who found Widowed AF just five weeks after her husband Mark died suddenly in October 2024. What follows is a conversation full of heartbreak, fury, dark humour, and the kind of honesty that makes grief feel a little less lonely.Donna shares the story of meeting Mark through mutual friends, a “blind blind date,” and a pub-stairs snog that turned into a relationship built on safety, tenderness and fierce loyalty. After years of difficult relationships, mental health struggles and recovery, Donna found in Mark someone who didn't just love her, but actively protected her wellbeing.Together they survived the devastating late-pregnancy loss of their daughter, privately named Charlotte but publicly known as “Pebbles.” Donna talks candidly about stillbirth, trauma, and the way grief bonded them even more deeply together. She describes Mark's quiet acts of love, from packing the car and taking her to the sea during bipolar episodes, to proposing in Paris simply because “he just wanted to see you smile.”The conversation then turns to the terrifying weeks leading up to Mark's death: repeated hospital admissions, catastrophic internal bleeding, blood transfusions, discharge decisions Donna felt deeply uneasy about, and the growing horror of realising something was being missed. Donna recounts the final hours in devastating detail, from the ambulance ride and failed attempts to stabilise him, to watching doctors perform CPR while begging him to come back.Rosie and Donna also talk about what happens afterwards: the rage of unanswered questions, delayed inquests, poor bereavement care, losing friendships alongside your partner, and the dangerous pull of alcohol when grief feels physically unbearable. Throughout it all, Donna speaks openly about bipolar disorder, surviving early widowhood, and the conscious decision to protect her mental health because Mark fought so hard to protect it while he was alive. This episode covers:• Falling in love after difficult relationships and finding safety in another person• Bipolar disorder, recovery, and supportive partnership without losing independence• Stillbirth, grief after baby loss, and naming their daughter Charlotte (“Pebbles”)• The role of humour, routine and practical care in long-term love• Hospital trauma, internal bleeding, repeated discharge attempts and advocating for loved ones• The shock of sudden death and witnessing resuscitation efforts firsthand• Anger, delayed accountability and ongoing inquest proceedings• Friendship, community and the people who quietly keep you alive in early grief• Alcohol, counselling, medication and surviving the “messy middle” of widowhood• Why protecting your mental health can become an act of love for the person you lost#widowedaf #widowhood #griefpodcast #griefsupport #bipolardisorder #pregnancyloss #stillbirth #nhs #medicaltrauma #inquest

In this Q&A episode, Uncle Joe and I dive into one of the most common—and misunderstood—struggles in marriage: emotional connection. We respond to a powerful question from Alex, a husband who genuinely wants to show up better for his wife but feels stuck, unsure how to respond to her emotions, and frustrated that his efforts don't seem to land.   This conversation breaks down why men default to "fix-it mode," why that instinct actually creates disconnection, and how emotional safety—not solutions—is what most women are truly seeking. We unpack practical, real-world skills for listening, validating, and reconnecting with your wife, especially after years of habit and complacency. If your wife has ever said, "I don't feel connected to you," this episode will give you clarity, direction, and a better way forward.     Timeline Summary [0:00] Introduction [1:02] Opening conversation about Valentine's Day and intentional connection [2:55] Alex's question about building emotional connection with his wife [4:10] Hearing hard feedback: "I don't feel connected or loved" [5:14] How long-term habits quietly shape marriage dynamics [6:03] Why men feel uncomfortable with big emotions [7:12] The difference between fixing problems and creating connection [8:10] Why women share emotions—to feel seen, not saved [9:00] Transactional conversations vs. emotional safety [10:14] Joe explains why feedback is actually a gift [10:59] Pebbles vs. boulders and minimizing your wife's feelings [11:56] Why "it's not a big deal" damages trust [12:17] Understanding how your wife feels loved [13:19] Acts of service and practical ways to reduce her stress [14:11] Real-life example of how small actions rebuild connection [15:19] Curiosity as the foundation of emotional intimacy [16:46] Leading with humility and listening through awkward silence [17:31] Treating your wife like you did when you first dated [19:02] Complacency as the silent killer of attraction [20:13] Why long-term relationships require intentional effort [21:09] Being challenged as an act of love [22:11] Brotherhood, faith, and the mission of the Dad Edge Alliance [23:08] Invitation to the Dad Edge Alliance preview call [23:47] Closing encouragement and next steps     Five Key Takeaways Emotional connection is built through presence, not problem-solving. Fixing minimizes feelings—listening creates safety. What feels small to you may feel huge to your wife. Curiosity and humility rebuild intimacy faster than tactics. Treating your wife like you did in the beginning keeps the relationship alive.     Links & Resources Dad Edge Alliance Preview Call (RSVP): http://thedadedge.com/preview Dad Edge Alliance (Marriage, Parenting, Health, Leadership): https://thedadedge.com/alliance Episode Show Notes & Resources: https://thedadedge.com/1438     Closing Remark If this episode gave you language or perspective you didn't have before, please rate, review, follow, and share the podcast. We've all had a moment when a tiny pebble sneaks into our shoe and makes it almost impossible to keep walking. We stop, we remove it, and we move forward. But what about the pebbles in our hearts—old hurts, resentments, memories, or disappointments that stay hidden until something shakes them loose? In this episode, I share a deeply personal story of discovering a pebble I didn't know I still carried. A story about a niece I loved like my own daughter—our closeness, our drifting apart, and the shock of realizing that years later, I still held hurt. When tragedy struck her life, I wanted to help. But that pebble—unnoticed, unacknowledged—made generosity feel hard. Pain blocked compassion. I wasn't proud of how I felt, but I was honest about it. And that honesty opened the door to healing. This is an episode about:

What's up, dudes? There's nothing like a Christmas jazz house song to kick off a party. I've got Steve Beech of Uplifting House Sessions with me to dive into the opening track of Winter Warnerland! Yes, we're talking Jeff Lorber “God Rest the House!”Jeff Lorber is an American keyboardist and composer specializing in jazz and fusion. After attending the Berklee College of Music, he played with Michael Brecker and John Scofield. Eventually he started Jeff Lorber Fusion and released his first album in 1977. He frequently played on Rhodes, Minimoog, and Prophet 5 keyboards. He subsequently went solo and had several singles on Billboard Dance charts. As the Winter Warnerland liner notes state:“He's the guy who first brought you Karen White with their smash hit, The Facts of Love. Kenny G, his former sax player and right now is one of the hottest session cats out there. You can hear his magic touch on current hits from U2, Pebbles, New Edition, Giant Steps, New Shoes, The California Raisins, Sheena Easton and Jeffrey Osborne. Those are just the ones he's played on this month. And you know he's saving up the good stuff for his next WB LP due sometime in 89. Even though he's a busy guy, he managed to crank out a hot house mix version of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen for us. Turn it up!”Driving bass line? Check. Syncopated version of the melody? Got it. Minor pentatonics, blues scale embellishments, and occasional chromatic triplets? Definitely! So grab your Yamaha GS-1, and jam out to this episode on Jeff Lorber “God Rest the House!”Uplifting House SessionsYouTube: @UpliftinghouseSessionsIG: @upliftinghousesessionsGive us a buzz!
