Is everybody ready to cut Footloose? Because we've choreographed this episode of Baconsale to be all about famous dance scenes in film. And will Joel, Kent, and Zack be singin' (in the rain) and dancing as they share their picks for such categories as Always Puts a Smile on My Face, Best Solo Dance Number, I Could Totally Do That, Memorable for the Wrong Reasons, and Hall of Fame? Bet on it. We've got canned heat in our heels and we will do our best to paint a picture of each scenario as we're dancing cheek to cheek. So whether you're into tap, ballroom, ballet, swing, modern, or hip-hop, we hope you enjoy our discussion, listener, because we've had the time of our life with this subject.   Press play to let us know if Sara got into Juilliard.    And visit Baconsale.com to find the YouTube playlist of scenes discussed in this episode.

Welcome to Twice 5 Miles Radio. I'm your host, James Navé. Today, I'm joined by Juliet Ewing, a dynamic jazz vocalist whose journey from Broadway stages to intimate New York jazz clubs is as lyrical as the songs she sings. ' A classically trained musical theater performer, Juliet speaks candidly about creativity, joy, and the art of telling the truth through song. We dive deep into her transformation from touring musicals like Crazy for You and Footloose to developing her sold-out cabaret "Rise Up Singing: The Music of George Gershwin," now culminating in her upcoming album Simply'S Wonderful. Juliet unpacks the layers of perfectionism, the power of storytelling in music, and how Gershwin's lyrics still break hearts a century later. We talk rehearsal, spontaneity, roses, and the jazz of living well. Juliet's voice—clear, radiant, intelligent—carries more than a tune. Her voice carries a lifetime of artistic devotion, grit, and joy. If you've ever wondered where the magic lives in a song, this conversation will bring you home.

A bunch of townies playing video games with their joysticks. The metaphors do not run deep here. If you're looking for a local scene where accruing points makes you royalty, where the vibe is provocative and the women love disrobing freely, then you just found your way to the local arcade, friend. Jefferson Bailey (Scott McGinnis) and his grandfather own and operate the town video-tech. When grandfather gets ill (or something, do we really know?), Jeff has to take on the resident busybody, Joseph Rutter (Joe Don Baker), and his idiot nephews. They want to Footloose the arcade youths! Meanwhile, Rutter's daughter, Patsy (Corinne Bohrer), is in on the teen delinquency. Jeff will have to battle his on-screen girlfriend's father demon and take on King Vidiot (Jon Gries) to save the day! The arcade? The summer? What the hell is really going on here? Is Eugene (Leif Green) hooking up? Is McDorfus (Jim Greenleaf) going to have a heart attack? RTS loves after hour parties and secret sexy video games. La-Mar shatters records in Moon Patrol and dominates a few rounds of Gorf. Collin gets on a minibike and shows the crowd who the Pole Position champion really is. When you're not taking off your shirt or having backroom circle-bed sex, just remember, “Totally awesome video games!”

If you've ever turned up the radio and belted out Footloose at the top of your lungs — or strutted around the house pretending you're Maverick flying a fighter jet to Danger Zone — then you already know the magic of Kenny Loggins, the undisputed king of the ‘80s movie soundtrack and a bonafide soft rock legend. But there's way more to Kenny Loggins than just toe-tapping anthems and blockbuster film credits. His story is pure classic rock gold, filled with sun-soaked California beginnings, powerhouse collaborations, and an uncanny knack for writing hits that stand the test of time.Born Kenneth Clark Loggins in Washington, Kenny grew up in the golden haze of Southern California's music boom. While his friends were trying to score surfboards, young Kenny was writing songs in his bedroom and dreaming up hooks that would one day echo through stadiums. He cut his teeth as a songwriter for hire, landing cuts with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.Kenny's story really kicks in when he teams up with ex-Poco and Buffalo Springfield member Jim Messina. Enter Loggins & Messina, the folk-rock duo that ruled the early ‘70s with feel-good harmonies and radio-friendly hits. These guys were the ultimate laid-back rock bros — they sold millions of records, filled arenas, and gave Kenny the confidence to step out on his own when the partnership ended in '76.When he did go solo, he doubled down. He scored a huge hit with “Whenever I Call You ‘Friend',” a dreamy duet with Stevie Nicks He co-write with Michael McDonald, “What a Fool Believes” — a song that scooped up the Grammy for Song of the Year in 1980.Then came the era that made Kenny a household name: the Soundtrack King phase. First up, Caddyshack. Next, Footloose — released in 1984, it shot straight to No. 1 and never left the pop culture dance floor. But Kenny Loggins wasn't done. Not even close. Two years later, the Top Gun soundtrack landed in his lap — and he strapped in for one of the most turbo-charged hits of his career: Danger Zone. But here's the thing — the Soundtrack King crown didn't box Kenny in. He's always been more than a hit machine. Albums like High Adventure and Vox Humana show his softer, more introspective side. Songs like “Heart to Heart” and “This Is It” gave us smooth sax solos and heartfelt lyrics. Kenny could be funky, he could be breezy, he could make you want to dance — or just chill on the porch.Through it all, Kenny stayed a collaborator at heart. He's jammed with Michael McDonald, Steve Perry, Stevie Nicks. He even dipped into children's music with Return to Pooh Corner. He's done Christmas albums, live records and acoustic sets. His catalogue is a masterclass in versatility.Today, Kenny Loggins is still out there, doing what he does best — playing sold-out shows for die-hard fans who never get tired of that big, warm, unmistakable voice. His book Still Alright: A Memoir tells the stories behind Kenny's legendary five-decade career and shares behind the scenes tales. The celebrated songwriter and chart-topping collaborator shares an entertaining perspective on his life and career as one of the most noteworthy musicians of the ‘70s and '80s and addresses his personal challenges and obstacles of his life and work -- including two failed marriages, a difficult but motivating relationship with the older brother for which “Danny's Song” is named, struggles with hisaddiction to benzodiazepines, and the revelations of turning seventy and looking back at everything that has shaped his music - as well as coming to terms with his rock-star persona and his true self.I hope you enjoy Kenny Loggins' candid conversation with me during this episode. To learn more about Kenny head ot his website: https://kennyloggins.com/

Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast

Flashdance (1983)—Dream Big or Go Home?In this energetic episode of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast, hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell dive into the iconic 1983 film Flashdance. Neither had seen the movie before, leading to some surprising reactions as they examine this influential 80s classic through modern eyes.Nathan reveals how Flashdance became the progenitor of the Simpson-Bruckheimer production style that dominated 80s and 90s cinema, influencing everything from Top Gun to Dirty Dancing and Footloose. The hosts discuss how this $7.5 million film that grossed nearly $100 million established the MTV-style visual language that would later evolve into the Michael Bay aesthetic. While Krissy found herself disappointed by the movie overall (giving it just 5 out of 10 "bras removed through shirts"), both hosts agree that the dance sequences are electrifying highlights in an otherwise disjointed narrative. They examine the film's problematic message about dreams and failure—that one setback means you should abandon your ambitions altogether. The hosts also explore the complex portrayal of Alex (Jennifer Beals) as a young woman experiencing sexual awakening while making questionable emotional decisions, and discuss the fascinating behind-the-scenes facts about Marine Jahan, the uncredited dance double who performed most of the iconic dance sequences.Other Topics Covered:The problematic age gap between 18-year-old Alex and her 36-year-old boss/love interestThe contrast between burlesque dancing at Mawby's Bar versus stripping at the club across the streetThe film's impressive soundtrack filled with 80s bangersJennifer Beals' performance and her famous "bra removal through sweater" techniqueThe supporting characters' abandoned dreams and limited character developmentNathan's recommendation of All That Jazz (1979) for a more substantive dance filmKrissy's unexpected endorsement of welding as an empowering hobbyWhether you're revisiting this classic or discovering it for the first time, this episode offers fascinating insights into how Flashdance helped shape 80s cinema despite its narrative shortcomings. As the hosts remind us, sometimes the most influential films aren't necessarily the most cohesive—but they can still deliver unforgettable moments that stand the test of time. --We couldn't do this without your support of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! In this radical episode of Past Tens: A Top 10 Time Machine, Dave and Milt hop in their DeLorean — flux capacitor fully operational — and set the date for June 16, 1984. They're not just cruising through the Billboard Top 10; they're living it like extras in Footloose. The episode kicks off with a heartfelt and totally tubular tribute to Dave's late father — think The Karate Kid's Mr. Miyagi, but with better dad jokes. From there, it's a parade of parachute pants, popped collars, and personal memories as they discuss the artists who ruled the airwaves: Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Duran Duran, and Cyndi Lauper — basically the Justice League of 1984 pop. Of course, it wouldn't be Past Tens without a few twists. There's a Playdate Quiz that would stump even The NeverEnding Story's Atreyu, a musical mashup segment that's more chaotic than Gremlins after midnight, and their signature song substitution game — think Indiana Jones swapping the idol for a bag of sand, but with Huey Lewis tracks. Some highlights: 00:54: A heartfelt memorial for Dave's father, complete with more heart than Kevin Bacon dancing alone in a warehouse. 08:33: Pop Culture Highlights: Ghostbusters hit theaters, Purple Rain was on the horizon, and nobody put Baby in a corner (yet — Dirty Dancing was still a few years away). 15:22: Countdown kicks off — Night Ranger's “Sister Christian” taught us all what "motoring" really means (spoiler: it's not what your dad thinks). 38:01: Musical Mashups — imagine Footloose meets Thriller but performed by the cast of Revenge of the Nerds. 39:22: Laura Branigan's “Self Control” — the unofficial soundtrack to sneaking out past curfew in 1984. 44:54: Huey Lewis reminds everyone that the heart of rock and roll is still beating — even if it's wearing leg warmers. 59:33: Steve Perry's “Oh Sherrie,” a ballad so powerful it could get E.T. to phone home twice. 01:19:50: Cyndi Lauper's “Time After Time” — guaranteed to make even the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man misty-eyed. 01:23:15: Cyndi's legendary ties to the wrestling world — she could literally have body-slammed a Goonie. Milt also teases his upcoming trip to Africa, though we're unclear whether he'll be traveling by Toto song or Temple of Doom bridge. It's a journey that's equal parts nostalgia, musicology, and a John Hughes movie montage. Crank up your Walkman and join the ride — just don't feed Milt after midnight.

Giddy up with Roxy Striar & Aaron Alexander as they ride into the hilarious world of Shanghai Noon (2000), where East meets West in a rollicking Western action-comedy. Jackie Chan shines as Imperial Guard Chon Wang (celebrated for Rush Hour and Rumble in the Bronx), dispatched to the American frontier to rescue Princess Pei Pei. He's paired with slick outlaw Roy O'Bannon (Owen Wilson, Wedding Crashers, Zoolander), whose quick quips and questionable bounty-hunting skills collide perfectly with Chon's martial-arts mastery. Lucy Liu (star of Charlie's Angels and Kill Bill) charms as the spirited Princess Pei Pei, whose sharp wit and warrior instincts match any cowboy's, while Roger Yuan (The Matrix Reloaded) brings menace as the ruthless henchman Lo Fong. Rounding out the posse, Chris Penn (Reservoir Dogs, Footloose) pops up as Chon's reluctant partner Marshal Jackson, and Dan Hedaya (Blood In, Blood Out, Boogie Nights) has a memorable turn as saloon owner Marshal Nathan Van Cleef. Roxy & Aaron break down every standout moment—from the gravity-defying train rescue and the epic saloon brawl to the explosive showdown in the mountain gold mine. Don't miss their take on how Shanghai Noon balances Jackie Chan's trademark stunts with Owen Wilson's laid-back humor, creating a dynamic duo that defined a genre mash-up favorite. Avoiding pain and maximizing pleasure. This is perhaps one of the most enduring human instincts and life-shaping habits in history. How much space does personal enjoyment take up in our life plans? If you live in the same South Bay that I am blessed to call home, this is a very important question. We love a good beach day, party, or vacation! We love fun food, delicious drinks, excitement, and entertainment. We work hard and we play hard. Another, perhaps more important question is a theological one: how does our personal enjoyment and play fit into God's design? Is God indifferent on the matter? Is He helping us get the party started? Or, like so many movies have suggested over the years, is God largely forbidding of fun and pleasure, like the curmudgeonly reverend in Footloose or the withholding mayor in Chocolat? Let's crack open the scroll of Ecclesiastes and consider an inspired and inspiring ancient poem on the matter!

This week on Blurry Hysteria, we're pulling rabbits out of uncomfortable hats!First up, the U.S. government is waving its moral wand again with a proposed federal bill to standardize obscenity laws—which sounds like code for “bye-bye porn, hello legal chaos.” Is this a noble crusade to clean up the internet, or just the 500th reboot of Footloose, but with more pixels and fewer dance numbers? Either way, we're not sure if we should be horrified or just... slightly bored. Then, we conjure up the magical tale of The Magic Circle's first female member, who fooled the boys' club by disguising herself as a man in the early 1900s. Spoiler alert: she was better at sleight of hand and mustache application than any of them. Gender-bending misdirection? Now that's a trick worth applauding.Tune in for a magical and moderately NSFW episode where illusion meets institution, and nothing is quite what it seems!Links & Resources

Join us as we relive the tale of rebellious Catholic school girls, televised dance-offs, and the eternal struggle against buzzkill parents who just don't understand the rhythm. We're talking Sarah Jessica Parker before Sex and the City, Helen Hunt in peak “my accessories are wild” form, and a plot that screams, “What if Footloose and glitter had a baby?” It's cheesy, it's chaotic, it's got choreography—and yes, we're judging every dance move like it's 1985.Intro/Outro Music: "Phantom Fun" by Jonathan Boyle----Show E-Mail: cultcinemacircle@gmail.com----Follow Cult Cinema Circle on Instagram, Bluesky, and Letterboxd Hosted on Acast. What's up, dudes? Remember GI Joe? This real American hero was developed by Stan Weston and licensed and produced by Hasbro in 1963. They even coined the phrase “action figure” to help market the toys to boys. In 1966, the British toy company Palitoy licensed GI Joe and created their version: Action Man. Action Man was primarily developed with British military themes in mind. To set themselves apart, Palitoy even developed flocked hair and gripping hands, though of course they eventually crossed over to the GI Joe line. Consequently, time kills most toy lines, and sales dwindled until GI Joe relaunched itself in 1982 with 3 ¾ inch figures to compete with Kenner's Star Wars figures. To keep up, Palitoy rebranded Action Man as Action Force, a mixture of international soldiers and specialists from Britain, Germany, Australia, and, of course, America. In ‘83 they were given file cards and character profiles and even had their own comic strip, Battle Action Force! Action Force battled the terrorist organization Red Shadows led by Baron Ironblood. Meanwhile, the Action Force toyline branched out into video games, audio stories on cassette tapes, stationery, and even toiletries. In ‘85, however, Alfred Pallett passed away, and Hasbro bought out Palitoy, including their factory, copyrights, and molds. Basically they just produced GI Joe figures under the Action Force name. In fact, Action Force even began fighting Cobra rather than Red Shadows. Even the cartoon was retitled and re-dubbed as Action Force with its own theme song! In ‘86, the Battle Action Force comic strip was canceled, and Marvel UK began publishing a weekly comic in ‘87. Action Force #43 from Dec 26, 1987 includes a Christmas story entitled "Silent Night." The snow may be deep and crisp and even inside the Norwegian arctic circle, but the Christmas celebrations turn a little sour for Footloose and Frostbite when a squad of Cobra snow serpents come visiting — and they aren't there for a kiss under the mistletoe! Explosions? Check. Harsh weather condition battles? Got 'em. Plum pudding MREs? Definitely! So grab your laser rifles, hop on your Snow Cat, and defeat Cobra with this episode!Give us a buzz!
