Every week, two of the Best Fans in Baseball (TM) bring you all the news and analysis you need about the St. Louis Cardinals. The trading deadline has come and gone and neither Daniel (@C70) or David (@iPopEditor) was all that enthused about it. It was fine, but will any of the returns make it to the majors? What about the roster and the clogs of bats that are there? Will we see Nolan Arenado again? Who will be the September callups? It's a hodgepodge of a show but it might be more entertaining than the current Cardinals game, depending on when you listen.
Will Carroll joins the show to react to the moves that were made by the Cardinals and Royals ahead of the MLB Trade deadline. He also dives into the weeds on the latest with Nolan Arenado after the third baseman hit the IL with a shoulder injury.

Ryan Wrecker chats with Tom Ackerman, sports director at KMOX, about the Cardinals' disappointing season and Nolan Arenado's uncertain future amid injuries and trade rumors. Ackerman emphasizes the need for the Cardinals to rebuild through solid drafting, developing, and retaining talent—citing successful models like the Milwaukee Brewers. The conversation then shifts to the recent controversy over a St. Louis City SC fan being ejected for wearing a MAGA hat, with Ackerman expressing frustration about politics creeping into sports. They close on a lighter note reminiscing about classic TV sports reporters from WKRP in Cincinnati and Frasier, debating who would make the better sportscaster.

In this episode, we break down the bombshell announcement of Nolan Arenado's placement on the 10-day injured list due to a nagging right shoulder strain and what it means for the star third baseman's future with the team. With trade rumors swirling, a no-trade clause in play, and a hefty $42 million contract through 2027, has Arenado played his final game in a Cardinals uniform? We discuss the implications of his injury, his declining offensive performance, and whether the Cardinals will trade him this offseason or keep him as they transition to new leadership under Chaim Bloom. Plus, we tackle the big question: Will the Cardinals spend big in 2026 to contend, or are they locked into another rebuild year?

Tom Ackerman joins to break down the Cardinals' trade of Stephen Matz to Boston for Blaze Jordan, a former viral slugger known for 500-foot home runs as a teenager. Despite being labeled a “former slugger,” Jordan is now leading Boston's minor leagues in power stats and could be a future star in St. Louis. The segment dives into the rationale behind the trade, the COVID-related delays in Jordan's minor league trajectory, and the broader picture of Cardinals' roster restructuring. On Episode 989 of Hittin' Season, powered by WHYY, John Stolnis of The Good Phight recaps Wednesday night's awful loss to the Red Sox and tries to get to the bottom of Jesus Luzardo's struggles. Also, Cristopher Sanchez is now a bona fide ace, John goes inside the numbers on what makes him so special. And what are the latest Trade Rumors surrounding the Phils? John breaks down all the latest. Could the Phils move Ranger Suarez or Luzardo this summer? Show Notes: Disastrous loss in the finale Phillies blow a 5-0 lead, HRs from Schwarber, Harper, Castellanos & Stott, Realmuto It's the Phils' first loss in a game they homered five or more times since June 10, 2019. They haven't won three in a row since June 18-20. Blame Realmuto & Luzardo, who had a no-hitter going into the 5th, gives us 6 in the 5th after walking in two runs then serving up a grand slam FELL APART WHILE PITCHING FROM THE STRETCH AGAIN Thomson said they have to keep digging and working on what's wrong with Luzardo, specifically in the stretch Since June 11, opponents have hit .192/.252/.253 with 37 strikeouts and eight walks when there is no one on base against Luzardo. With runners on base, those numbers jump to .339/.443/.576, 16 strikeouts and 11 walks. (Gelb) Gelb says he went back to his old mechanics last night, but it still didn't work Jesus Luzardo says he is working day and night to fix his issues and he says they need to be fixed. He says teams are hitting him hard when he is pitching out of the stretch. He says it is not on JT Realmuto losing that foul ball pop-up. He says he and other Phillies lost it as well. Manager Rob Thomson says Jesus Luzardo lost his concentration. Phillies now 3-8 in Luzardo's last 11 starts They've now given Luzardo 3-0, 4-1 and 5-0 leads in July only to have him lose all 3 of them. He posted a 2.15 ERA in his first 11 starts. He allowed 20 runs in his next two. He made significant mechanical changes when pitching from the stretch, and it's resulted in only a 4.79 ERA over his last nine starts. UNLESS LUZARDO FIGURES THIS OUT, THEIR ENTIRE OFF-SEASON WILL HAVE BEEN A COMPLETE AND UTTER FAILURE The good news is this is a mechanical issue… which would indicate to me it CAN be fixed… but can they fix it in time? PITCH TIPPING: The Red Sox are renowned for doing this. Two pitches later, Story doubled home a run. THIS WAS NOT A STRONG ROB THOMSON GAME Luzardo should have been pulled after the second straight bases loaded walk, but got Jordan Romano up too late… after the game, Thomson admitted that was a mistake Pinch-ran Weston Wilson for Kyle Schwarber in the 10th after Schwarber's RBI single… Wilson, who is not fast… thrown out trying to steal 2nd to end the 10th With Wilson already used, Max Kepler had to face a lefty reliever and watched a called strike three to end the game in the 11th, instead of having Wilson available to pinch hit Rob Thomson on the 5th inning tonight: Said they have to keep digging and working on what's wrong with Luzardo, specifically in the stretch Harper's home run was the 350th of his career Bryce Harper tonight became the youngest of the 8 active players to reach 350 career home runs joining Giancarlo Stanton, Mike Trout, Paul Goldschmidt, Manny Machado, Freddie Freeman, Nolan Arenado, Aaron Judge. Kyle Schwarber's 34 HR are the 3rd-most through 102 games in Phillies franchise history, behind only Ryan Howard in 2006 and Mike Schmidt in 1979 -- both had 36. Cristopher Sanchez is a TRUE ACE: https://www.thegoodphight.com/2025/7/23/24472912/cristopher-sanchez-is-a-real-bona-fide-cy-young-contender WHEELER & SANCHEZ This gives the Phillies a leg-up in the postseason No one can match what the Phillies can do in the playoffs STARK ON SCHWARBER Says he believes Schwarber will be back here 4 years, $100 million is the number… how is he going to have a better deal four years AFTER the first free agent contract??? TRADE DEADLINE LATEST: Jayson Stark on 975 the Fanatic w/ Mikey Miss: Dombrowski wants to use his biggest chips to trade for a big time power bullpen arm controllable beyond this year, Duran, Bautista, no on Miller or Clase If he gets one, it's a right-handed platoon bat that falls into his lap Bullpen arm is more important than a bat Jeff Passan: The Phillies have quietly built up one of the best farm systems in baseball, and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski's history of trading prospects for impact talent is unmatched. Still, with the Phillies entering a transition phase over the next few years, they aren't likely to sacrifice all of their depth. That complicates their tack at this deadline, because they are among the few teams with the need and capacity to acquire a pitcher of Clase's talent. Same goes for Cade Smith, another Guardian, and the Twins' two frontline relievers, Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax. Getting David Robertson for $6 million certainly helps matters and serves as insurance against objectionable demands on high-end relief pitchers. And yet adding Robertson plus a high-octane relief arm alongside Orion Kerkering and Matt Strahm gives the Phillies a representative back end. If they can also add a right-handed-hitting outfielder with power -- Adolis Garcia is in the mix, and Luis Robert Jr. would play, too -- it will be a successful deadline for a team whose starting pitching is good enough to carry it deep into October. Ruben Amaro & Jim Salisbury on Phillies Show Very interesting stuff on the show from Amaro (doesn't think they'll be able to get a lock down closer), Aiden Miller might be more untouchable than Painter, and the clubhouse talking about Eugenio Suarez (Salisbury). @JohnnyPhisher: Phillies need a RHH OF @Buster_ESPN: A surprise name has emerged in the starting pitcher market: Dylan Cease, who will be eligible for free agency at year's end. Perception of other teams is that the Padres are intent on making a push for the playoffs, and would use Cease to help fill other roster needs. Mets, AL East teams, Cubs among teams that have talked about him. COULD THE PHILLIES DO SOMETHING SIMILAR WITH RANGER SUAREZ OR JESUS LUZARDO? Jo Adell started slow, but on May 6 he hit a 9th inning HR in a blowout that got things going for him. Since then (67 gms) he has a .907 OPS (top 20 in MLB) with 19 HR (T-6th), and his .563 SLG is higher than any Phillies player. An interesting name: Dane Myers. Plays center field for the Marlins. The right-handed 29 year is wailing on lefties: .324/.385/.493, .878 OPS, 2 HRs, 13 RBIs in 78 PAs, 6 doubles. Would be a platoon guy. The Phillies and Padres are two of the many teams that have expressed interest in Steven Kwan, reports Jon Heyman of The New York Post. Both National League contenders are known to be looking for a left field upgrade.

Former MLB Pitcher Josh Towers and Scott Seidenberg take a look at teams that are buyers or sellers and players that could be dealt as we inch closer to the trade deadline. Scott Seidenberg and Josh Towers began the podcast by highlighting the proximity of the MLB trade deadline on July 31st and exploring player perspectives on potential trades (0:02-0:54). Josh Towers shared insights about clubhouse attitudes, noting that players on borderline teams usually do not focus too heavily on rumors unless they perceive their team as a genuine contender (0:54-2:22). Scott specifically referenced Zach Allen's scenario, discussing extra motivation players might feel to perform exceptionally well, either as a farewell to their home fans or to appeal to potential acquiring teams. Towers concurred, emphasizing how recent performances heavily influence trade interest (2:23-4:26). For players on losing teams, Towers explained they often refrain from openly expressing dissatisfaction but admitted they privately may urge agents to facilitate a trade, highlighting their focus remains primarily on what they can control—their performance (4:27-5:58). They then discussed prominent potential free agents, notably Kyle Tucker, Pete Alonzo, Ranger Suarez, and Framber Valdez. Towers indicated that Tucker could command a significant contract, speculating around $500 million due to the limited number of big names available (6:05-9:16). Scott and Josh shifted their focus to the Philadelphia Phillies, anticipating aggressive trade deadline actions given the impending free agency of key players like Kyle Schwarber and JT Realmuto, stressing the Phillies' urgency for success (9:17-10:30). They conducted a detailed breakdown of specific potential trade candidates: Eugenio Suarez from the Diamondbacks was deemed a definite trade candidate due to market scarcity (10:31-10:40). Sandy Alcantara, despite a 7.14 ERA, was viewed positively due to his talent and health (10:55-11:24). Mitch Keller from the Pirates and Zach Allen and Merrill Kelly from the Diamondbacks were discussed as attractive pitching targets, with Towers uncertain on Kelly's market value given his declining velocity (11:35-12:54). Nolan Arenado was considered a possible high-value trade piece, especially if packaged with Ryan Helsley, making him attractive to teams like the Yankees (12:54-13:53). Reid Detmers was identified as a valuable asset despite recent struggles, with Towers emphasizing his potential if developed properly (13:54-14:34). They then analyzed various teams: The Milwaukee Brewers' recent success raised questions about their legitimacy, given historical postseason struggles (17:06-18:25). The Toronto Blue Jays, despite inconsistency, were cautiously viewed as potential contenders (19:46-21:33). The Seattle Mariners were described as too streaky and lacking offensive consistency (22:27-23:10). The Texas Rangers were recognized for strong pitching but considered lacking sufficient offensive consistency (24:19-24:45). Tampa Bay Rays were praised for their unpredictable yet effective roster-building approach (24:46-25:33). In the National League: The San Diego Padres' potential was acknowledged, but Towers indicated internal cohesion issues possibly hampering performance (25:59-27:59). The Giants were dismissed as inconsistent and thus not genuine contenders (28:03-28:40). The Cincinnati Reds were enthusiastically discussed as a young team with potential but needing additional key offensive pieces to become legitimate contenders (29:21-33:27). Finally, they briefly touched on the Angels, suggesting that adding two pitchers could significantly enhance their playoff chances, despite current struggles and a negative run differential (34:29-35:47). Scott concluded by emphasizing the approaching trade deadline's impact on MLB futures markets, hinting at further discussions to come (37:47-39:51). Learn more about your ad choices. BT and Sal dissect the New York Yankees' perplexing tendency to strike out, arguing that their "all-or-nothing", launch-angle focused approach is hindering their offense despite having plenty of power. Sal champions the idea of acquiring a high-contact, defensive-minded third baseman like Nolan Arenado to balance the lineup, contrasting him with strikeout-prone options like Eugenio Suarez or even Anthony Volpe, who a scout suggests is trying to hit like Aaron Judge. They emphasize the importance of putting the ball in play, even if it's a groundout for an RBI, as opposed to the current lineup's frequent whiffs, which they believe limits run-scoring opportunities.

In this "Call of the Day," Eddie from Long Island passionately argues that the struggling Yankees could significantly improve their winning record, particularly in extra innings, if they simply embraced small ball and bunted more often with runners on base. He emphasizes this as a fundamental Little League principle and expresses extreme frustration with the team's current approach. Brendan Tierney and Sal Licata then debate Eddie's point, bringing up hypothetical lineup changes and the merits of potential trade targets like Ryan McMahon and Nolan Arenado, ultimately circling back to the Yankees' perceived aversion to bunting and its impact on their offensive strategy.

Post-Dispatch podcasts page: https://go.stltoday.com/0hfn43 Please consider subscribing: https://go.stltoday.com/9aigz5 After his barehanded play on a slow-rolling grounder ended Tuesday night's game against the Cubs with a stirring, 8-7 Cardinals victory, third baseman Nolan Arenado talked about how much it meant to play meaningful, tense, important games against an archrival. He said he woke up excited, and hadn't been this eager to get to the ballpark in almost two years. A day early, Cubs manager Craig Counsell said he wouldn't be the "hype man" for the series. The oldest rivalry in Major League Baseball between two teams that have not left their cities, Cubs-Cardinals was long defined by one team's brand as champion and the other as lovable losers, but that's so Y2K, man. Now the rivalry happens in cycles, and for the first time in several years the Cardinals and Cubs were snug in the standings when they played this past week at Busch Stadium. Does that give the rivalry renewed verve, or does the change in schedule make it just another division series? Chicago Tribune baseball writer and Cubs beat writer Meghan Montemurro joins the Best Podcast in Baseball for a conversation at Busch Stadium (listen to that determined A/C) about the current state of the rivalry and if it has the same heat in Chicago that it experienced from the St. Louis side this past week. The pressure is on the Cardinals to chase down the Cubs, and the pressure on the Cubs, with only one guaranteed year of standout player Kyle Tucker, appears to be on winning and advancing in October now. How should that shape their trade deadline decisions? How can they shape the Cardinals' trade deadline decisions? Cubs president Jed Hoyer is in the final year of his contract, and Cardinals president John Mozeliak is in the final year of his tenure leading the Cardinals' baseball operations. Change is coming, potentially to both teams, adding another twist to the rivalry. Plus, BPIB host Derrick Goold, asks Montemurro about his theory that maybe instead of the National League Central rivals spurring the Cubs to spend like a bigger market it will be their neighborhoods on the South Side as the White Sox welcome in a new investor. A split four-game series at Busch Stadium between the Cardinals and Cubs left nothing settled between the two teams, and the final game of the series (a 3-0 victory and second consecutive shutout by the Cubs) ended with both teams emptying their dugouts to almost confront each on the field. Tempers cooled quickly, but the stage is set for their next week within two weeks for Fourth of July at Wrigley Field. Will there be fireworks? The Best Podcast in Baseball, in its 13th year as one of the leading baseball podcasts, is sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis. It is a production of StlToday.com, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and Derrick Goold.

Cory and Eric Phillips discuss the St. Louis Cardinals defeating the Cincinnati Reds 6-5 in an 11-inning thriller on June 21, 2025, at Busch Stadium. The Reds led 5-2 going into the 8th, powered by Elly De La Cruz's two-run homer and Matt McLain's two doubles. However, Nolan Arenado's game-tying homer off Reds closer Emilio Pagan sparked a Cardinals comeback. In the 11th, Yohel Pozo's walk-off single scored Jordan Walker for the win. Cardinals pitchers held the Reds to 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position, while Phil Maton earned the win. The Reds' bullpen struggled late, with Chase Petty taking the loss.
