We've both had a lot of good times making this, learned a ton, and had the opportunity to work on something we were both proud of. We go into better detail as to why in the episode. For years now, Screaming Females has maintained a constant presence in my life. (Hey, this is Chance.) A combination of raw musical talent, DIY ethic, and Marissa Paternoster's otherworldly vocals have gotten Screaming Females a lot of traction in the indie community, and they SO deserve it. Their 2018 album, All At Once, is one of their most unique projects, as it captures so many sounds into one cohesive thing. We hope you enjoy. Few bands can follow up one of the biggest albums of all time with another one just like it. But Pink Floyd's 1975 album Wish You Were Here did just that. It may not have been quite as successful as The Dark Side Of The Moon, but it definitely had their most well known hit. This album has a little bit of everything on it, heavy psych rock, pseudo-country, and one of the most played classic rock tunes there is. This album might be a 10/10. You'll have to listen to decide for yourself. Hearing King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard for the first time can be a life-changing experience. I mean, the name alone is insane, and a pretty good indicator of what's to come. King Gizzard's music runs the gamut from high energy psych rock to middle eastern-influenced prog to heavy metal and more. They've released 15 albums in ten years, and still make time to tour a TON. This episode, we went all the way back to the beginning of their catalogue. We talked about the second of two EPs from 2011, Willoughby's Beach. Though this album slightly pales in comparison to their later works, it holds up as a catchy garage rock fuzz-fest. David Lynch is a man known as a filmmaker. If you're into the deep cuts you know he also paints, makes documentaries, music videos, draws comics, and the reason we're here today, makes music as well. Oddly enough, his music isn't quite as weird as most of his movies, but it's a close race. Technically unspectacular, Mr. Lynch's second studio album manages to pull you into a story, a world, or just an atmosphere in almost every song on this record. It’s crazy how long Justin Bieber has been around. Think about a song like “Friday” by Rebecca Black. That song came out around the same time Justin Bieber was getting big, but she hasn’t sustained a fraction of the starpower JB has (for better or worse). His newest album “Changes” dabbles in this R&B/trap kinda style. It’s pretty much what you expect. But, to his credit, some songs are really bad and some… aren’t so bad! Jimi Hendrix is easily one of the greatest guitarists of all time. His live shows, whether at the Monterrey Pop Festival or at Woodstock are apart of the American music tradition at this point. Iron Maiden is the Pro Wrestling of Heavy Metal. It's kitschy, fast, and a blast. They're one of the few legends left from that bygone era of metal, and Powerslave set the tone for how bands could tour. This is an eight track album featuring two of the better known songs from Maiden, but has become a hallmark of the bands prowess as technicians. This record will be the last of the definitive sound of early Iron Maiden, and serves a kind of estuary for what is to come. Get in the proper head space for something a little sillier, but that still has more depth than you might imagine. EDDIE LIVES! For how maniacal and abrasive Death Grips’ music is, it’s surprising the level of acclaim they’ve gained on the internet. But more power to ‘em! Death Grips has to be one of the most unique artists of the decade. Their music is off-kilter, at times scary, but still has some killer hooks. The frontman of the group, MC Ride, has a flow unlike anyone else’s, especially as it changes from song to song. Zach Hill’s drumming is frantic and all over the place. The lyrics are violent, spiritual, and uncensored. Whether or not we love every song, this is an album that demands your attention. The album we talk about this week is super poppy, but you shouldn’t be scared away by that! Blondie is a band that has massive crossover appeal. They represent the radio friendly side of new wave, but still have a tinge of that punk rock spirit that surrounded them. Illmatic might as well be the guide book on how to compose a perfect Hip Hop album. It's influence can still be seen today in almost every aspect of Rap, from lyricism to the beats, content to structure, this album has it all. Embroiled in the midst of the early stages of the East Coast vs. West Coast feud, Nas stakes his claim as one of the best to ever pick up a microphone. This album brings the grittiness of urban New York life in the projects to light while still managing to inspire a bit of hope along the way. Yes, it was a ton of fun talking about this Yes album! Yes was there in progressive rock's infancy, and with a handful of huge songs, has stayed relevant all these years. Not only that, but with the help of one of those weird Japanese cartoons, they had a meme resurgence in the last few years. Fragile, from 1971, is a mix of long-form funky, atmospheric rock songs, with... well, a bunch of tracks that are pretty indescribable. The Blues is one of the oldest genres of modern music, possibly THE oldest. So how do you take something so old and not only make it sound different, but great while doing it? Ask The Tedeschi Trucks Band. The giant 11 member band released their Grammy winning debut album, Revelator in 2011 and have been on a whirlwind like tour pretty much ever since. Malibu by Anderson .Paak stands out as being an immensely varied rap album, taking inspiration from soul, classic rock, funk, and a sprinkling of Kendrick Lamar, for good measure. Tool is a band with a cult following. A cult following that actively annoys many, many people. Taylor Swift fans. Courtney Love. Anyone who hasn't listened to Tool previously. Despite this, the band themselves are pretty fantastic, and they make very interesting music. If you want to develop a cult following like Tool has, you need an album like Ænima. In 1996, Tool changed what it meant to be a Tool fan with their groundbreaking, experimental, silly, and complex second album. This one is a bit of a bear at over three hours long, but we think it will be three plus hours well spent. On this episode of On The Record, we talk about Led Zeppelin's fifth studio album, Houses of the Holy. This went from an album Nick was interested in learning about, to one of his all time favorites. The 1973 record was a little different from the blues/rock style Zeppelin had achieved such success with previously, incorporating aspects like folk, Indian classical, and reggae into their sound.
