Just one Christmas song, James Brown "Santa Claus Go Straight To the Ghetto", from a Christmas album he did in 1968 called "A Soulful Christmas". That's my offering for the silly season, otherwise it's always the season for great roots music. A bit of a technical blue to start with - heck what's new? But after that it was plain sailing.

Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   Nelson DeMille (1943-2024) Nelson DeMille, who died on September 17, 2024 at the age of 81, was one of the leading best-selling authors from the 1980s into the 21st Century. Among his novels are The General's Daughter, the Gold Coast, Plum Island and Word of Honor. Three of his novels were turned into films. On June 13, 1997, Richard A. Lupoff and Richard Wolinsky interviewed Nelson DeMille while he was on tour for Plum Island. In the discussion, we focused on that book, as well as several others.  This is the first of two interviews with Nelson DeMille. Nelson DeMille would return to the character of Paul Brenner from The General's Daughter in Up Country in 2002, he would return to John Corey from Plum Island in The Lions Game in 2000, and in seven other novels. In all, there would be 27 novels, plus two written in collaboration with his son, Alex DeMille, two early novels written under a pseudonym plus several works of short fiction. Three of his books, most notably The General's Daughter, became films. This interview was digitized, remastered and edited by Richard Wolinsky in November 2024. Echo and other faults exist on the original recording. Complete Interview   Barry Lopez (1945-2020) Barry Lopez (1945-2020) in conversation with Richard Wolinsky on June 11, 2004 while he was on tour for Resistance, a collection of interrelated short stories with the theme of resistance. Barry Lopez, who died on December 25, 2020 at the age of 75, was a master of the short form, both fiction and non-fiction. His non-fiction, collected in such books as Arctic Dreams and his last published work, Horizon, and his fiction in collections such as Light Action in the Caribbean, focused on exploration, biology, morality, transcendence, biology, politics, philosophy and much more. In this second of three interview, he discusses how he came to write this particular book, and then moves on to discussing what in 2004 was an unnamed threat of totalitarianism. Today, of course, it's named. He speaks of the inattentiveness of the masses as well, which also has great resonance today. Barry Lopez Wikipedia page. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   Bookwaves Jan Morris (1926-2020) Jan Morris was a noted travel writer and historian, and a leading figure in the trans world. As James Morris, she accompanied Edmund Hillary on the first expedition to the summit of Mount Everest. Before and after her transition in 1964 to the time of her death, Jan Morris had published 18 travel books, six history books including a three volume history of the British Empire, eight memoirs including the best-selling Conundrum, two novels and twelve collections of essays. These interviews were originally aired together on November 25, 2021.   An interview recorded while Jan Morris was attending a conference in San Francisco, August 20, 1999. Richard Wolinsky and Richard A. Lupoff discuss her career, her feelings toward writing, the United States and other topics. Jan Morris's book, Lincoln: A foreigner's quest, discussed in the interview, was published in 2001. Complete 38-minute podcast.     An interview recorded during the book tour for “Trieste and the Meaning of Nowhere,” recorded November 16, 2001 in the KPFA studios. In this interview Jan Morris talks about the meaning of Trieste in her life, delves deeply into what she sees as the future of humankind over the following decades, and pretty much nails where we are today in 2021. True to her word in the interview, “Trieste and the Meaning of Nowhere” was the last full-length book Jan Morris would write. Collections of new and old essays were published in 2004 and 2010, an illustrated essay on the Battleship Yamoto in 2018, and two volumes of late in life diaries were published, the first in 2018, “In My Mind's Eye,” and posthumously in 2021, “Thinking Again.” Complete 40-minute podcast.   Review of “1984” at Aurora Theatre through December 10, 2023.     Book Interview/Events and Theatre Links Note: Shows may unexpectedly close early or be postponed due to actors' positive COVID tests. John Scalzi has written over thirty books, five of which are non-fiction, plus short stories, essays, chapbooks and audio books. His specialty is the comic science fiction/fantasy novel, often dealing with common tropes in films and television, figuring out how they would work in real life (Kaiju monsters, Star Trek red shirts, etc). His best known works include the Old Man's War series, and several of his stories have been nominated and won various awards. His latest novel, “Starter Villain,” looks at James Bond type supervillains and how they might operate in the real world. The book also serves as a satire on the egotism and hubris of the very rich. John Scalzi has also written for television, and several of his stories have been adopted for the “Love, Death and Robots” series on Netflix. He has raised money for Americans United for the Separation of Church and State and has been a strong supporter of feminist causes. Complete 65-minute Interview. Tonight's VIP is Mr. Chris Miskel, CEO of KENDRE Music Group. Chris is naturally gifted to do what he loves. He said he has never taken formal lessons and has gained the majority of his inspiration from mentors, Oscar Seaton Jr. and Khari Parker. He has admiration for Steve Gadd, Steve Jordan, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Dave Weckl. In 2003, Chris began touring with guitarist Nick Colionne and in late 2006, with smooth jazz artist Brian Culbertson during his Soulful Christmas tour. He is currently touring with Brian Culbertson and Will Downing but has performed with a variety of artists. By playing with many musicians, Chris has acquired the ability to play the drums in multiple styles and genres of music. He believes adapting to various musical situations is essential to being a well-rounded musician. When Chris is home between tours, he continues strengthening his drumming techniques, solos, and improvisation by performing in local clubs and participating in jam sessions. According to Chris, "The vibe you receive from playing in local clubs allows you to stretch out and just play! Playing what I feel and being able to transcend my vibe to the fans and get a reaction from them is what makes my job wonderful". One quote he stands by is “If u do what you've always done you"ll get what you've always gotten.” #ChrisMiskel #drummer #jazz #rnb #music #BrianCulbertson #TiffanyRochelle #thepeoplescheerleader #HearMyHeart #chicago #WillDowning, #producerlife #musicdirector #bYou #LifeCoach #Success #Life #Encouragement #podcast #talkShow #Coach #GrowthMindset #Author #LifePurpose #mindset #motivation #inspiration #youtube #applepodcast #Spotify

Episode NotesYes indeed, folks, Christmas time is here again!  We at What the Riff!?! want to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas, and here are a few rocking songs of the season for you to put on your playlist.“Merry Christmas (I Don't Want to Fight Tonight)” by the RamonesThe founders of the punk movement offer this take on a Christmas song, with the rapid tempo and rough lyrics we've come to know and love as a classic Ramones style.  Christmas is a time to be together with family,  but some families are a little less together than others!“Little Saint Nick” by the Beach BoysA little bit more sand than snow, this well-known Christmas classic takes inspiration from the surfin' genre of the Beach Boys in songs like "Little Deuce Coupe".“I Believe in Santa Claus” by REO SpeedwagonREO Speedwagon produced an album of Christmas standards in 2009.  The re-release in 2010 included three bonus tracks, one of which was this original song penned by Cronin and Hall.“You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” by  Thurl RavenscroftRavenscroft's bass voice is iconic for this classic song from the animated special, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."  He also contributed his voice to Tony the Tiger for Kellogg's Frosted Flakes commercials.“Santa Claus is Comin' to Town'” by Bruce SpringsteenHow we missed this song in the first three Christmas episodes is a mystery, but Springsteen's rendition of this Christmas standard has been heard on rock radio stations everywhere since the mid-70's.  This rendition has made lists of both the best and the worst Christmas songs of all time.“Blue Christmas” by Elvis PresleyBrian wouldn't let us get through another episode without taking on this iconic song.  Doye O'Dell may have recorded this sad Christmas tune in 1948, but Presley's version is without a doubt the most famous one.“Mele Kalikinaka” by Bing Crosby & The Andrews SistersThe name of this song is a phonologic translation of the word "Merry Christmas" into the Hawaiian language.  Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sisters sang this song in 1950, but it made us think of its appearance in "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation."“Up on the Housetop” by Gene AutryWhile Autry sang this classic in 1953, it actually originated much earlier.  Benjamin Hamby wrote it in 1864, and it is the second-oldest secular Christmas song, after "Jingle Bells."   “I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas” by Gayla PeeveyBruce thought this was sung by Bernadette Peters, but it was actually performed by then 10-year-old child prodigy Gayla Peevey in 1953.  The song inspired a fundraiser which resulted in the Oklahoma City Zoo acquiring a baby hippo named Matilda..“Soulful Christmas”  by James BrownWhile it is definitely a Christmas song, it is also a song of Thanksgiving, with the Godfather of Soul expressing his thanks for his fans coming to his shows and buying his albums.“Another Lonely Christmas” by PrincePrince penned this original Christmas song during his "Purple Rain" days, and it appeared as the B-side to the single "I Would Die 4 U."  The initial recording took place on February 18th, 1984 when Prince was essentially operating solo, and it tells the story of a man whose lover died on Christmas Day.“The Christmas Song” by Nat King ColeRobert Wells and Mel Torme wrote this standard in a hot July, and it had its beginnings as a psychological way for Bob Wells to think of cold things during the heat wave.  Nat King Cole recorded the most famous version of this song in 1946, adding a small string section over the objections  of Capitol Records.“'Zat You Santa Claus” by Buster Poindexter & His Banshees of BluePoindexter and his band cover this lesser-known Christmas tune originally sung by Louis Armstrong and the Commanders in 1953.  It tells the story of a guy frightened by a knock on his door while hanging up his stocking.“Another Christmas Song” by Stephen ColbertIngrid brings us a track by comedian Stephen Colbert, who parodies a Christmas song with the intention of becoming rich off its popularity.“Have a Holly Jolly Christmas” by Burl IvesThis song was featured in the Rankin-Bass Christmas Special "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer."  Ives provides the voice for Sam the Snowman, the narrator of the show.  This song finishes off that special, and also finishes off our special podcast.Merry Christmas, y'all!

James Brown's music and personality is endlessly fascinating, and on this album, he reminds us that not all Christmas songs have to be by Bing Crosby or Mariah Carey. The album in question is A Soulful Christmas, from 1968. Merry Christmas and happy holidays, from us (and James Brown) to you! In just four years, Jennifer has gone from best-kept-secret status to being hailed as one of the freshest new voices in alt-pop/adult contemporary music. She wowed critics with 2015’s “Merry Christmas, You Are Loved,” her debut holiday album produced by Narada Michael Walden. She then followed it up with “Walk With Me,” a captivating mix of luscious soul and R&B, co-written and produced by Walden, and next came “Wake Up,” an album brimming with consciousness-raising gems, including the globally recognized title cut that featured the talents of South African Grammy-winning male choral group Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the distinctive playing of guitar legend Carlos Santana. Continuing her collaboration with Walden, Jennifer released her second holiday album in 2017, “Soulful Christmas,” a delightful assortment of seasonal treasures that saw the singer joined by The Temptations on the single “Christmas Lover.”

I decided I wanted the Party Favorz site to match the residence, so I went ahead and decorated it on both fronts.  Actually, Rick and I don't put up decorations until the weekend of Thanksgiving.  However, we both agreed we needed some Holiday cheer sooner rather than later.  So, we pulled out all the lights and the wreaths and hung everything up with the precision and care of two old lady's that have been collecting ornaments since their first husbands died...LOL. The most special item is our Charlie Brown Christmas Tree that we bought back in 2001, the first year we moved to Atlanta.  We didn't have a lot of money to burn, but we were at Michael's (an arts and craft chain in the U.S.) and they had everything 50% off.  We knew we couldn't buy a real tree, and even if we did, my anal-retentive self would have had to make all the decorations by hand; something I did flawlessly with my ex, who kept all of them...bitch!  I digress.  Anyway, that also costs money.  So when I saw this little kinda ugly tree made out of dried branches and already decorated, I decided to find the money to rescue it.  Obviously, I bought it and it's been shining brightly every season ever since. Christmas trees are symbolic for the obvious reasons, but our little Charlie Brown tree symbolizes our first Christmas together and everything we did to get here.  Due to its special nature, I just thought I would share that with you guys.  Over the years we've added and removed stuff, always trying to keep it fresh, but at the end of the day, it's still our little Charlie tree. As for the mix, I put this together off the cuff last year.  King Street Sounds had put out an album called "Christmas in the House"  that was filled with some unmixed holiday deep house tunes.  So, I bought it and mixed it up tacking on a couple of holiday dance classics at the end to round it out.  This year, they have three more new tunes, but I couldn't find the originals and wasn't going to spend another $10 on something I previously owned.  Since the blog was new anyway and I figured not that many people ever had the chance to download it, I decided to bring it back and share it again. The original upload was a 96 bitrate and this one is in 320 plus I added the Mariah Carey tune at the end, thus the 'enhanced' version.  I know, usually, an enhanced release contains more than one extra song plus a DVD, but I figured a higher quality version and one new song should suffice.  Besides, I always wanted an enhanced version of my mixes...LOL.  I'm not going to say this is for everyone, because it's not.  After all, it is a true deep house.  Nevertheless, if you're a house head like me, I think you'll appreciate the alternative to the traditional. Anyway, this is my last diversion before we get back on track.  When I mean on track, I mean full steam-a-rolling!  I've got some big, big did I mention BIG updates that I'll start rolling out sometime this coming weekend.  So big, it should keep y'all swarming like a bunch of busy bees.  I hope those of you living in the U.S. have a happy Thanksgiving and I'll catch up with everyone this weekend.  Until then...ENJOY!
