On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a rare trio episode for you, since two of our guests created something very cool together: Jo Firestone, Marissa Paternoster, and Joe Steinhardt. I'll start with Jo Firestone, the actor, writer, comedian, podcaster, game inventor, and probably some other stuff that I'm forgetting, who you may have seen on the show Joe Pera Talks With You or, like a million other things. She's done stand-up specials and albums, she's written for The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, and she hosts the game-centric podcast Dr. Gameshow. Firestone is currently the head writer on After Midnight, the comedy/game show hybrid that airs late every night on CBS. In other words, she's busy. But not too busy to chat with her friends Marissa Paternoster and Joe Steinhardt about their new graphic novel, Merriment. You may recognize Paternoster are the singer and guitarist for the amazing, recently broken up band Screaming Females, and Talkhouse readers and listeners may even recognize her illustrations, which have appeared on the site over the years. Paternoster continues to make music, but the focus of this chat is Merriment, her first graphic novel. Paternoster put her eerie, singular images to a story by her old friend Joe Steinhardt, head of the long-running independent label Don Giovanni Records, which has been home to a number of incredible bands over the past two decades, including Screaming Females. These three have a fun, loose chat about Merriment, which in case I didn't say it yet, you should definitely check out, as well as Steinhardt's not-so-secret desires to be a comedian, Paternoster's can't-fail movie idea, how Firestone was once tasked with selling St. Louis pizza with a New York attitude, and a game I'd never heard of called “Somebody Pooped in the Salad.” Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Jo Firestone, Marissa Paternoster, and Joe Steinhardt for chatting. You'd think if you have Joe Steinhardt from Don Giovanni Records and Marissa Paternoster of Noun and Screaming Females, you might talk a lot about their legendary impact on New Brunswick's basement scene. Or at the very least about their great new graphic novel, Merriment. Nope. This is New Jersey is the World, so we're talking about the Northeast Corridor train line! (First aired on WUTC 1/13/24)"Marissa Paternoster is one of the best guitar players alive.” -Kathleen HannaA band lasting for half the lifetime of its members, Screaming Females has long been pounding out their own desire path. Formed in 2005 in New Brunswick, NJ, the trio has consistently created a hearty, surprising mix of indie-, alt-, punk- and stoner-rock, all with their original line-up of Marissa Paternoster (guitar/vocals), “King Mike” Mike Abbate (bass) and Jarrett Dougherty (drums).Released on February 17th, 2023 by Don Giovanni Records, Screaming Females' final album, Desire Pathway, was recorded at Minnesota's Pachyderm Studios. Bright and full, the album captures the band at a time when nothing was certain other than their abiding desire to make music together. For 18 years and eight albums, Screaming Females have clearly created their own path in the world, touring DIY, self-managing, and releasing music without compromise. The route might cut a little off the main road, but you'll quickly see there's a reason they went this way. You just might like where it leads you! For this incredibly thrilling premiere episode of Season 5, I am joined by Marissa Paternoster, the frontwoman of the legendary New Jersey punk band Screaming Females. Marissa and I talked in depth about her band's steadfast DIY ethics, recording the latest Screaming Females album in the now infamous Pachyderm Studios where Nirvana, The Wedding Present, and PJ Harvey made their most iconic LPs, our shared love of Placebo, and so much more. ✨ MORE ABOUT SCREAMING FEMALES ✨Formed in New Brunswick, NJ in 2005, Screaming Females is Marissa Paternoster (guitar, vox), Mike Abbate (bass), and Jarrett Dougherty (drums). Over seven albums and more than a decade of music-making, the band has remained deeply individual and steadfastly DIY. DIY and punk trio Screaming Females have pioneered an uncommon path through the underground and the larger music business since their inception almost twenty years ago. They've released their eighth studio album this year, titled Desire Pathway, now out on Doni Govani records. Ahead of their Chicago stop on their spring tour, vocalist and lead guitarist Marissa Paternoster and drummer Jarrett Dougherty talked with Features Co-Director Mick R. about the state of their creative process and its democratic underpinnings, the contributions of producer Matt Bayles to their latest record and their steady and supportive relationship with Don Giovanni Records. Screaming Females will be playing at the Corbra Lounge in Chicago on April 19th w/ Generacion Suicida and The Mimes Find Desire Pathway at https://www.dongiovannirecords.com/ If you're truly having like a democratic creative process where everyone gets to chip in their two cents, you're never going to get exactly what you like, or might absolutely desire. But the whole beauty of being in a band is that ... you come up with something together that you never even expected. - Marissa Paternoster. Produced by Mick R. Image Credit: Krista Schlueter
Marissa Paternoster is doing too many amazing things to be defined by any one of them – she's best known for her music in the Screaming Females, a band whose whole ethos of self sufficiency, open mindedness, strong integrity and ability to evolve without ever not being the Screaming Females I just love, she writes phenomenal melodies, harmonies and lyrics both with the band and on her own – do check out her solo album Peace Meter for a masterclass in how to write perfect songs – she makes really thought provoking art through drawing on everything from postcards to buildings to ceramics, she's been collaborating on a graphic novel and sings and plays guitar with such character and individuality.https://www.heysunday.co/i-wanna-jump-like-dee-deeI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. There's a new Screaming Females album released next week, on February 17th, as ever, on Don Giovanni Records. Called Desire Pathway, it is, as ever, a thrilling thing, with some of the best songs the New Jersey band have written – and some of singer/guitarist Marissa Paternoster's most exciting licks – in the group's 17 years of history to date. I've loved Screaming Females for years. They're one of my very favourite bands. I've wanted to talk to Marissa for ages and ages. And so I'm surprised that when I did, I wanged on so much about Bigfoot. In episode 71 I talk to Marissa Paternoster about Nina Nastasia, an American folk singer-songwriter. A native of Los Angeles, she first came to prominence in New York City in 2000 after Radio 1 disc jockey John Peel began giving her debut album, Dogs, airplay. The album earned Nastasia a cult following, and was re-released in 2004. Her fifth studio album release, You Follow Me (2007), was a collaboration with Australian drummer Jim White of Dirty Three. As of 2022, Nastasia has released a total of seven studio albums, each recorded by Steve Albini. Her musical style has been described as folk and country-influenced with neo-Gothic overtones, often featuring sparse acoustic guitar accompanied by string arrangements.

Was tun?

If there’s anything we’ve learned this year, it’s that deep down, everyone loves ska. This week we provide yet another example of an unexpected band releasing a ska song: Screaming Females. They will be releasing a cover of The Selecter’s “On My Radio” next month. The song is being released as part of the deluxe edition of the comic series What’s The Furthest Place From Here? which is written by punk lover Matthew Rosenberg, who has written many popular comic books (Spiderman, Wolverine, etc)We got a sneak of Screaming Females’ “On My Radio” cover, and let me tell you, it is awesome. Good enough that it inspired us to bring them on the show to tell us about the tune and their relationship to ska. We also discuss the New Brunswick scene (Where Catch 22 are kings!), how guitarist Marissa Paternoster nearly played in The Slits, how drummer Jarret Dougherty’s bout of tendonitis led to an obsession with Our Band Could Be Your Life, The Minutemen, and DIY culture. And last and perhaps most importantly, we talk about Taylor Swift. If you enjoyed this episode, please share it with your friends, and on social media. For years now, Screaming Females has maintained a constant presence in my life. (Hey, this is Chance.) A combination of raw musical talent, DIY ethic, and Marissa Paternoster's otherworldly vocals have gotten Screaming Females a lot of traction in the indie community, and they SO deserve it. Their 2018 album, All At Once, is one of their most unique projects, as it captures so many sounds into one cohesive thing. We hope you enjoy. We talk about it at the end of the episode, but I felt I should mention it here. After next episode, we'll be on an indefinite hiatus. We love you all, and we'll talk about it more then. This week we sat down with Megan March and John No from the band STREET EATERS. STREET EATERS are a truewave/punk band from Berkeley, CA. Active since 2008, they have extensively toured North America and Europe with bands like SCREAMING FEMALES and FORGETTERS, playing everything from steamy midwest basements and smoke-filled Serbian squats to four experimental/ambient sets at the Portland Art Museum and multiple nights at the Fillmore Ballroom supporting JAWBREAKER. They have released several EPs and three well-received full length albums on both continents, including their most recent LP The Envoy - a concept album based on famed dystopian, gender revolutionary, anti-authoritarian author Ursula K. Le Guin's books "The Dispossessed" and "Left Hand of Darkness". Megan and John also run the independent label Nervous Intent Records which has put out music from bands such as CROOKED BANGS (Austin), LEVITATIONS (Berlin), and the upcoming LP from SILENT ERA (Oakland/SF). The label is also releasing a new Street Eaters 7" picture disc soon, which features the band's first foray into playing with guitarists - including a GANG OF FOUR cover with Marissa Paternoster (of SCREAMING FEMALES) on guitar and vocals (video of it live here). In addition to playing in Street Eaters, Megan (drums) and John (bass) have been in bands such as FLESHIES, WILD ASSUMPTIONS, and YOUNGER LOVERS. John is also a high school social studies teacher and was the main editor and a primary contributor to the 2019 anthology Teaching Resistance (on PM Press). --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adultingwell/support

Conan Neutron's Protonic Reversal
Infinite Void: Infinite Void's name might have you thinking black metal, but the Melbourne quartet are firmly planted in atmospheric punk and post-punk, taking cues as much from the members' past punk bands as from the smudged sonics of My Bloody Valentine, Joy Division and Pornography-era Cure. They released their debut self-titled album through Poison City Records in 2012 and had Steven Smith from Scul Hazzards manning the desk for the sessions, and since them have released some very rare split 7” records to keep the ball rolling. Recorded live at the Oxford Art Factory in Sydney on the 17th of February, 2016. Recorded & mixed by Harvey O’Sullivan. Screaming Females: Mixing equal parts Dinosaur Jr. and Sleater-Kinney, the Brunswick trio of Marissa Paternoster (guitar/vocals), Michael Abbate (bass), and Jarrett Dougherty (drums) strives to embody the spirit of indie rock in its purest form; Screaming Females book their own shows and self-released many of their own records to bring their guitar-driven rock to the people without compromise. In 2007 the band fired its opening shot, self-releasing its debut full-length, Baby Teeth. The band quickly followed up with its sophomore album, What If Someone Is Watching Their T.V.?, which was self-released and later reissued by Don Giovanni Records, with whom the band has enjoyed a good relationship. Between 2010 and 2012, Screaming Females released their fourth album, Castle Talk, and followed up with their fifth album, the Steve Albini-engineered Ugly, in 2012. The band teamed up with producer Matt Bayles to record its 2015 studio effort, Rose Mountain and embarked on a tour that saw them travel to Australia for the first time, from which the set you’re about to hear derives from. Recorded live at the PBS FM Studios in Melbourne on the 8th of August 2016. Engineered by Jeremy Smith. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 6th of November 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
