All three acts shared similar experiences in the earlier halves of their music careers, and this episode discusses the parallels shared between these artists in 2025. Kicking off my chronological review of pop music across 2025 with Tate McRae's 'So Close To What' & Lady Gaga's 'MAYHEM.' We had such a great time talking with VyVyan Hammond about her single "Play Pretend" and the album it will be on "Lovers Gonna Love, Haters Gonna Watch"(forthcoming). We talked about Rebecca Black's classic "Friday," finding yourself after being lost, and her mantra, 'the journey is the goal.' Vyvyan Hammond has been writing songs for as long as she can remember. “When I was four, I'd ride around on my BMX making up songs in the bush, singing to the trees,” she says. “It was just how I made sense of the world.” Now, after years of quietly creating, she's stepping forward with her debut single Play Pretend. “The world's changed so much—it pushed me to stop waiting,” Vyvyan explains. “I've got something to say, and I want to find the people who need to hear it.” Originally from Sydney, her music is shaped by a life spent observing, feeling deeply, and translating that into raw, lyrical honesty. This might be her first release, but it's the result of years of reflection and creative persistence. Play Pretend explores the slow erasure of self in a relationship—how, in trying to keep the peace, you gradually lose touch with who you really are. “You make adjustment after adjustment until you don't recognise yourself anymore,” she says. The story continues with her next single, Hunter Gathered, delving into coercive control and narcissistic abuse. It captures the descent into isolation, anxiety, and the internalisation of blame—until that constant tension starts to feel like normal life. This emerging body of work is deeply personal and emotionally unfiltered—music for anyone who's ever questioned their worth or lost their voice.
