In 2011, it was impossible to escape the “Friday” music video. September 16, 2011 changed the trajectory of pop culture – and of 13-year-old Rebecca Black's life – forever. What started as a harmless, fun music video (with yes, some questionable lyrics) turned into a vitriolic mob obsessed with bullying a teenage girl. Even now, every few months the song will resurface on TikTok. But what happens to the person behind the viral fame? What happens to the subject of unnecessary hate? Rebecca Black is on the pod to tell you. Watch us on YouTube here! Listen to Geoffrey's album on Spotify and Apple! You can buy Nora's books on Bookshop or Amazon, or wherever you buy books. This week we bring you a special episode from Amelia Callahan, one of our 2026 Podcast Fellows. She introduces her new podcast, The Separation of Pop and State, which compares political and pop culture moments to show how treating politicians like celebrities can shape their behavior and public discourse. She discusses her hesitation about sharing political opinions publicly and defines “cancel culture” (boycotting/shunning) versus “smear campaigns” (efforts to discredit reputations), arguing the two often overlap through propaganda and bandwagon effects. As a central example, she analyzes the viral “Howard Dean scream” and how ridicule and media framing helped derail his 2004 campaign despite minimal substance. She links similar dynamics to pop culture cases (Ellen DeGeneres, The Chicks, Rebecca Black, Bud Light/Dylan Mulvaney, Taylor Swift) and argues voters must recognize propaganda, fact-check, and base opinions on evidence to strengthen trust, civic engagement, and democracy. 00:00 Democracy Group Intro 00:23 Meet Amelia Callahan 02:31 Why This Podcast Exists 04:39 Politics at the Table 05:45 Cancel Culture Explained 07:48 Smear Campaigns vs Canceling 10:54 Howard Dean Scream Case 18:12 Celebrity Cancelations Compared 23:44 Boycotts and Bandwagons 26:03 Memes as Political Propaganda 32:41 Fact Checking and Civic Trust 35:13 Closing Takeaways Know a student interested in democracy and podcasts? Shawn Banks is a stand-up comedian & producer based in Chicago, Illinois! You can catch his show, 'Lowkey Funny', MONTHLY at The Laugh Factory Chicago
This episode opens with Daniel and Adam in their characteristic loosely-structured warm-up mode — microphone technique, drive-thru misgendering, and the mechanics of speaking in a low voice — before pivoting to Daniel's running update. With the Walt Disney World Springtime Surprise 10-miler two weeks out, he recaps a disrupted training week: a rainy, post-birthday Sunday led to a schedule shift (Monday/Wednesday/Friday instead of the usual Sunday anchor run), costing him his long run. He now owes himself an 8-miler and a 9-miler on back-to-back Sundays, with Adam's upcoming Florida visit landing squarely in the middle of that ramp-up.The lion's share of the episode is Daniel's birthday recap, and it's dense with Disney granularity. The evening moved from the Enchanted Rose lounge at the Grand Floridian, to a standout dinner at Citrico's (filet, rare, Cabernet demiglace, a non-committal Canadian waitress, and a woman whose perfume forced Darwin out of the dining room entirely), to a prime Main Street viewing of Happily Ever After. Daniel catalogues the fireworks show's 3D shaped pyrotechnics with the fluency of a man who has seen it "a thousand million times." The night capped with a minor maritime adventure: a young cast member had to dock a free-floating ferry in choppy, wind-driven conditions, missed on the first attempt, nailed it on the second, and received a full-boat standing ovation. Adam's contribution to the birthday segment is that he spent the same weekend navigating a three-call odyssey through Blue Cross to pay $20 for new health insurance he obtained through healthcare.gov — a saga involving wrong department routing, an unhelpful Walmart insurance rep, and a voice IVR he openly argued with. The back half of the episode covers two pop culture tangents. First, Jeopardy: Daniel watched a YouTube-only celebrity episode featuring Rebecca Black, Monet X Change, and comedian/Dungeon Master Brendan Lee Mulligan, whom Daniel evangelizes with obvious enthusiasm. Mulligan missed Final Jeopardy and still won by $6,000. This detours into both hosts airing their longstanding grievances with Wheel of Fortune strategy (vowel buyers, puzzle solvers who won't commit letters). Second, a listener phone call from Tony in Illinois delivers a Little Rascals/Buckwheat "dictate" joke, which prompts a good-faith but inconclusive on-air debate about whether the joke is racist. The episode closes with logistics: no show next week (Adam is in Florida), a possible Level 13 bonus drop during the visit, and the race weekend show returning the Friday after.Email: Contact@MixMinusPodcast.comVoice/SMS: 707-613-3284

LA SPINZ April 6, 2026 – Final Sequence Segment 1: Paul McCartney performed 2 nights at the relatively small 1200 capacity Fonda Theater in Hollywood and the place was jammed with celebrities. Seen in the crowd were Ringo, Taylor Swift, Stevie Nicks, Sabrina Carpenter, Ryan Gosling, Billie Eilish, Steven Tyler, Olivia Rodrigo, Elton John, Tate McRae, Steve Carrell, Dua Lipa, Margot Robbie and DOZENS more. Who LET ‘EM IN? Segment 2: To convince people to eat snacks with spicy gherkin flavor, the folks at Frito Lay hired an ODD pair to pitch their latest product. Megan Thee Stallion and Nickelback have collaborated on a new music video that mixes winking humor, special effects and a remake of the band's 2001 hit “How You Remind Me.” My stomach is ALREADY feeling SOUR. Segment 3: Blackpink's Lisa announced a Las Vegas residency at the Coliseum at Caesar's Palace. She is the first KPOP artist to have a residency in Vegas. While Jennie, Jisoo, and Rosé are off doing other things, Lisa will be performing there in November. The residency is called “Viva La Lisa.” But will the price of a ticket be 1/4th of a Blackpink ticket? Segment 4: Long running quiz show “Jeopardy” will be spinning off to You Tube later this month. It will start with an episode hosted by Ken Jennings, with contestants from the YouTube creator world: Monét X Change, Rebecca Black and Brennan Lee Mulligan. Also, the other Jeopardy spinoff “Pop Culture Jeopardy! is coming to Netflix. I'll take ‘Too Many Jeopardys' for $600, Ken. Segment 5: The cast of reality show “Laguna Beach” reunited after twenty years. The “Reunion: Laguna Beach” red carpet premiere brought the crew back together in L.A. AND everyone was THERE, from Lauren Conrad to Kristin Cavallari to Stephen Colletti. The series is now airing on the Roku Channel. The cast will soon be going back to being known as WHO?? Segment 6: Dead Or Alive: Sandra Bullock is best known for the films “Speed”, “The Blind Side” “Gravity” and most recently, “Bird Box.” Dead Or Alive? ALIVE. Bullock is set to co-star in “Practical Magic 2” alongside Nicole Kidman and Stockard Channing. The original Practical Magic was released in 1998. Sandra Bullock is 61 years old. Segment 7: “The Madison” scored the biggest first season launch that a Taylor Sheridan series has ever seen. Following its debut, which saw its first three episodes launch on Paramount+, “The Madison” tallied up 8 million views in its first ten days. The series, which stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell, also SCORED BIG with women over 35…much like Russell. Segment 8: Comedian Bill Maher confessed he took no issue with Donald Trump's attempt to block his Kennedy Center honor, noting he was happy to “keep the game going” with the president. Yep, a week after The White House calling it “fake news”, they DID announce Maher WOULD receive the 2026 Mark Twain Prize for American humor. Yep, just another TACO. Segment 9: “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” star Glen Powell is voicing Fox McCloud, the surprise Nintendo character joining the Mario Bros. Powell most recently starred in the thriller “How to Make a Killing” plus last year's “Running Man.” His breakout role was “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022. Powell is reportedly worth 16 million dollars. FOR NOW. Segment 10: Idiot Of The Week – A former Tiger Woods employee blasted the golfing champion after his recent wild rollover car crash and DUI arrest. He said quote, “The guy is a terrible driver. He drives like a bat out of hell, very often on a road where lawn services are parked with heavy equipment.” Unquote. Yep, Woods specialty is ROLLOVER accidents. IDIOT! Segment 11: CBS has cancelled the series “Watson' after 2 seasons, and also canceled the comedy “DMV” after 1 season. However, they RENEWED 16 of its programs, including “Matlock,” “Elsbeth”, “Marshals” and “Tracker.” Meanwhile, the “CBS Evening News” sunk to its lowest numbers, dipping below 4 million viewers. Dead Walter Cronkite said…nothing. Segment 12: Russell Brand‘s trial on rape and sexual assault charges has been delayed. The trial, which will combine all seven charges that have been brought against the comedian and actor in the last year, was originally set to begin in London on June 16th but will now begin on Oct. 12th. It is expected to last up to two SALACIOUS months. Loser. Segment 13: The teaser trailer for HBO’s Harry Potter series shattered records, amassing over 277 million views in its first 48 hours. The debut teaser more than doubled the previous record for the most-watched trailer in HBO history, setting the stage for the series’ release on Christmas Day, 2026. WHICH will be here before you KNOW it. Uggh. Segment 14: The TV adaption of the Anne Rice novel “Talamasca: The Secret Order” has been canceled at AMC after just one season. It was a disappointment for the company, which has been bleeding money over the past several quarters. A spokesperson for AMC said, “While we are not proceeding with another season, we are proud of the series” and BLAH BLAH BLAH…” Segment 15: Trash Bin – A minor, who is accusing diddler and reality tv star Joseph Duggar of grooming and sexual assault, detailed her allegations to investigators. The young girl, who was only 9 years old at the time, said Duggar's hand repeatedly grazed her private parts and he had her sit on his lap several times during a family vacation. He was 26. Gross. Segment 16: News Wrap – a) For the second time in just over a year, Netflix is raising prices in the U.S. b) Apple will spend $400 million to manufacture essential components in the U.S. c) Elon Musk's Grok has been ordered to stop creating AI nudes by a Dutch court. d) Epstein victims will get $72 million dollars from a Bank of America settlement for overlooking signs that his accounts were used to further his abuse of young women. ABOUT TIME. Segment 17: Number 1's – Super Mario Galaxy, BTS Arirang, Team Speed 3, Project Hail Mary Segment 18: Song Of The Week – BTS – “Swim” The new studio album from KPOP supergroup BTS, “Arirang”, is out now and has been a huge seller. The group's 82 date stadium tour kicks off this week in Seoul and includes 4 nights at L.A.'s SOFI STADIUM in September. The group's documentary, “BTS The Return”, is airing on Netflix. One piece of bad news – group member RM suffered a sprained ankle and ligament tear and only has limited movement. Other than that, the band is excited to perform live around the world, which will include several songs off the new album, like this one which we LOVE. Here's BTS with the Song Of The Week, “Swim.” That was BTS with the Song Of the Week, “Swim.” The post LA SPINZ – April 6 2026 appeared first on LA Spinz.
Send in your music story!A silly Friday mood turns into the kind of conversation that's way more real than you expect. We start with Rebecca Black nostalgia and end up unpacking the weird ways school adults sometimes try to “teach lessons,” from setting kids up to laugh to calling an entire class a future failure statistic. If you've ever carried a random school moment for years, you'll understand why we went there, and why we laugh through it anyway. Then we shift into a tight music news rundown for anyone who wants the highlights fast: the loss of Motorhead guitarist Phil Campbell, Rod Stewart's farewell tour momentum, reunion buzz, release chatter, and the swirling Kanye West India concert rumors. We also do a quick Harry Styles reality check, comparing albums, talking hit power, and why some new songs can be good without taking over the culture the way As It Was did. Finally, we get fully consumed by Pocopia, the Pokémon builder game that has us playing on lunch breaks and thinking about it when we're not even holding the controller. We break down what makes it work: cozy Animal Crossing style charm, Minecraft style building freedom, story driven Pokémon characters, completionist systems, and even DJ Rotom letting you run around while classic Pokémon music plays behind you. We wrap by sharing what we've been listening to lately, from early 2000s hip hop and R&B chaos at work to pop punk discoveries and a renewed love for Fastball. Part II of my year-end review of pop music across 2025 tackles Selena Gomez & Benny Blanco's 'I Said I Love You First,' Miley Cyrus with 'Something Beautiful,' and Demi Lovato's 'It's Not That Deep.' All three acts shared similar experiences in the earlier halves of their music careers, and this episode discusses the parallels shared between these artists in 2025. For Selena Gomez, I'll be diving into the couples branding behind her work with Benny Blanco, and how both the singles and campaign may be a mismatch for the album's core. On 'It's Not That Deep,' I'll be going through the recent album and how the singles may have prevented the album from reaching its full potential, and how Demi's dance effort is her most ambitious to date. Plus, how does Miley's new album stack up next to 'Can't Be Tamed,' 'She Is Coming,' 'Endless Summer Vacation,' or 'Plastic Hearts?' Let me know your thoughts as well.
This week, we come in hot — starting with wuxia vibes, holiday chaos, and cursed Christmas remixes of “September” — before diving into music stats, Taskmaster binges, Eden's Wuxia/Baihe adventures, and Peter's latest reading spree (including Gödel, Escher, Bach). Eventually, we embark on the Most Important Cultural Work of Our Time: a fast-food and fast-casual tier list. Along the way, we crown unexpected champions, bury some long-held myths (looking directly at you, In-N-Out), and declare Waffle House the beating heart of American civilization. It's unhinged, joyful, occasionally shameful, and fully definitive.Opening ShenanigansEden opens with an incredible wuxia monologue introducing Beauty's Blade, the Baihe novel they've been reading.Peter tries (and fails) to match the energy.Thanksgiving recaps: delayed flights, Target wandering, and the absolute war crime that is “Do You Remember…the 21st Night of December” playing over store speakers.Life Updates & MediaEnd-of-year malaise, work overload, and winter dread.Apple Music Replay breakdowns:Peter: another year, another Slow Forever domination.Eden: a deeply chaotic top-albums list featuring Rebecca Black, Japanese jazz fusion, KPM library music, and Tron: Legacy.Taskmaster binges continue.Peter's current reading includes Three-Body Problem and the 900-page Gödel, Escher, Bach.Eden is deep into Where Winds Meet (“What if Assassin's Creed but Wuxia and optionally an MMO?”), and fully living in Jianghu.Manga corner: Kaiju Girl Caramelise is adorable and unhinged in equal measure.
Kicking off my chronological review of pop music across 2025 with Tate McRae's 'So Close To What' & Lady Gaga's 'MAYHEM.' Both artists kicked off in Q1 with some of the years most defining albums, and in this episode I'm breaking down the strengths and weaknesses of both projects in reference to the specific artists catalog, and the grand scheme of pop music at large. Plus, I'll be diving into the campaigns surrounding each album and how they tie to both longevity, public narrative, and their own Grammy chances. Did these albums hold up after months? Did the campaigns promoting the album help the artists reach their potential? I'll also be giving a special shoutout to another great Q1 project, which is 'SALVATION' by Rebecca Black.

We had such a great time talking with VyVyan Hammond about her single "Play Pretend" and the album it will be on "Lovers Gonna Love, Haters Gonna Watch"(forthcoming). We talked about Rebecca Black's classic "Friday," finding yourself after being lost, and her mantra, 'the journey is the goal.' Vyvyan Hammond has been writing songs for as long as she can remember. “When I was four, I'd ride around on my BMX making up songs in the bush, singing to the trees,” she says. “It was just how I made sense of the world.” Now, after years of quietly creating, she's stepping forward with her debut single Play Pretend. “The world's changed so much—it pushed me to stop waiting,” Vyvyan explains. “I've got something to say, and I want to find the people who need to hear it.” Originally from Sydney, her music is shaped by a life spent observing, feeling deeply, and translating that into raw, lyrical honesty. This might be her first release, but it's the result of years of reflection and creative persistence. Play Pretend explores the slow erasure of self in a relationship—how, in trying to keep the peace, you gradually lose touch with who you really are. “You make adjustment after adjustment until you don't recognise yourself anymore,” she says. The story continues with her next single, Hunter Gathered, delving into coercive control and narcissistic abuse. It captures the descent into isolation, anxiety, and the internalisation of blame—until that constant tension starts to feel like normal life. This emerging body of work is deeply personal and emotionally unfiltered—music for anyone who's ever questioned their worth or lost their voice. For Vyvyan, it's about reclaiming that voice, and helping others do the same.
