Part time investigation, DP Del, and session traditions. Wyatt Blair (Wyatt Blair, Active Decay, Lolipop Records) "Los Angeles' Wyatt Blair can't stop. A physical manifestation of inertia, Blair has been a musical object in motion since his father taught him to play the drums at 13 years old. In the years since, he's spent his time playing in numerous bands, producing bands albums, releasing four self-produced solo albums, and founding the LA-based record label Lolipop Records, through which he helped break a new wave of young garage rockers out of their neighborhoods and into the world. His previous releases garnered praise from Pitchfork, The FADER, Spin, Uproxx & more, and led to support slots alongside acts like The Growlers, Broncho, Screaming Females, Peach Kelli Pop, Cosmonauts and more. Now, after a tumultuous year and relocating from Los Angeles to Flagstaff & back again, Blair is taking some time to help himself the only way he knows how: Channeling his struggles into massive arena rock/power-pop songs on his new EP For The First Time." The May 7 death of musician/engineer/producer/ranconteur Steve Albini shocked music fans all over the world. What may have surprised fans even more is the discovery of just how much classic records he helped create in his four decade run. Besides famously successful records by superstars such as Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey, and others, Albini worked with a wide range of artists, big and small. The discography is literally impossible to navigate, as his credits include over a thousand different sessions. So tonight’s look at Albini’s career is indeed not complete. Some of his most well-known projects aren’t included. Instead, this show tries to show that wide variety I already mentioned. There are singer/songwriter types that worked with on a number of records (Robbie Fulks, Magnolia Electric Co.), quite a few well-known acts that were looking for a different sound (Guided By Voices, Fleshtones), and some more recent bands that certinly benefitted from his wisdom (Cloud Nothings, Screaming Females). There’s also a set devoted to Albini’s own musical career, including a couple of tracks from a brand new Shellac album, To All Trains, that was posthumously released today (May 17).  For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a rare trio episode for you, since two of our guests created something very cool together: Jo Firestone, Marissa Paternoster, and Joe Steinhardt. I'll start with Jo Firestone, the actor, writer, comedian, podcaster, game inventor, and probably some other stuff that I'm forgetting, who you may have seen on the show Joe Pera Talks With You or, like a million other things. She's done stand-up specials and albums, she's written for The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, and she hosts the game-centric podcast Dr. Gameshow. Firestone is currently the head writer on After Midnight, the comedy/game show hybrid that airs late every night on CBS. In other words, she's busy. But not too busy to chat with her friends Marissa Paternoster and Joe Steinhardt about their new graphic novel, Merriment. You may recognize Paternoster are the singer and guitarist for the amazing, recently broken up band Screaming Females, and Talkhouse readers and listeners may even recognize her illustrations, which have appeared on the site over the years. Paternoster continues to make music, but the focus of this chat is Merriment, her first graphic novel. Paternoster put her eerie, singular images to a story by her old friend Joe Steinhardt, head of the long-running independent label Don Giovanni Records, which has been home to a number of incredible bands over the past two decades, including Screaming Females. These three have a fun, loose chat about Merriment, which in case I didn't say it yet, you should definitely check out, as well as Steinhardt's not-so-secret desires to be a comedian, Paternoster's can't-fail movie idea, how Firestone was once tasked with selling St. Louis pizza with a New York attitude, and a game I'd never heard of called “Somebody Pooped in the Salad.” Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Jo Firestone, Marissa Paternoster, and Joe Steinhardt for chatting. We're back after a four month hiatus to bring you our list of the top 100 albums of 2023. Is it, at bare minimum, a month and a half late? Yes. By "we" do we mean "just Brad because Sean wouldn't want any part of this nonsense"? Yes again. But whatever, we're doing it anyway. It has been another great year for music, which at this point should not be shocking. We've got incredible team-ups galore, big names from the past making a mark in the present, new names bursting on to the scene, everything and the kitchen sink albums, spoken word weirdness, hip-hop standard bearers still innovating, gloopy synths, the sounds of a haunted house, and above all else, a lot of very aggressive, noisy music. It was a hell of a year. So... enjoy? (We'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming... eventually. Probably soon. Formed in 2005 in New Brunswick, NJ, the trio has consistently created a hearty, surprising mix of indie-, alt-, punk- and stoner-rock, all with their original line-up of Marissa Paternoster (guitar/vocals), “King Mike” Mike Abbate (bass) and Jarrett Dougherty (drums).Released on February 17th, 2023 by Don Giovanni Records, Screaming Females' final album, Desire Pathway, was recorded at Minnesota's Pachyderm Studios. Bright and full, the album captures the band at a time when nothing was certain other than their abiding desire to make music together. For 18 years and eight albums, Screaming Females have clearly created their own path in the world, touring DIY, self-managing, and releasing music without compromise. They're kicking off their first season with the Showtime series Yellowjackets. If you haven't watched Yellowjackets, it's about what happened to a (fictional) New Jersey high school girls' soccer team who spent 19 months in the Canadian wilderness when their plane crashed there in 1996. The show follows the girls in 1996 and 2021. It's a total celebration of 90s nostalgia, in general, and 90s Jersey nostalgia, in particular. You can watch the series premiere for free. But really, all you need to know about that show to enjoy this episode is that it has the most incredible soundtrack full of some of the best music to come out of the 90s.Aside from talking about a few specific songs the show has used, we keep it spoiler free, so you don't need to be a Yellowjackets fan to enjoy this one. It has been over a month since the phenomenal record release weekend of Screaming Females' album labeled Desire Pathway. There was a ton of excitement in the air leading up to the release and the band did not disappoint when it came time to finally hit the stage and play the songs. The Scream Females' home state of New Jersey was lucky enough to have the release of Desire Pathway and the annual Garden Party jam packed into a two night celebration. It was a festival loaded with great bands and close friends of the band that made the event to be even bigger and better than ever. The Screaming Females closed out the weekend release run with an intimate setting when they traveled to Philadelphia to play in a record store. All of it felt unreal and too good to be true. If the Screaming Females haven't already proved that they know how to throw a party, they sure gained recognition after this record and set of shows. It was only the start for what looks like it's going to be a huge year for the group.  On this episode give a listen to the early beginnings of the band where they discussed how the group formed and what has kept them together. We hear a funny audio clip about what subjects pop up in the van - including a history/current events lesson. Marissa chats about her solo project and the music she released on her own last year. Marissa also gives us a rundown of the unique art of the band. And of course ... the record iself and that incredible release weekend. Catch the band on tour because they are almost certainly coming to a venue near you in 2023! Screaming Females - "Brass Bell" from the 2023 album Desire Pathway on Don Giovanni Jersey trio Screaming Females continue to pave their own punk-rock path on their latest LP Desire Pathway, out now via Don Giovanni Records. Vocalist/guitarist Marissa Paternoster speaks to the album title, sharing, "Maybe there was one in your neighborhood growing up, a corner where everyone decided it took too long to go around, so they made their own pathway to cut through. There's this cool unsaid group consciousness that comes together where everyone decides, this is the right way to go." With today's Song of the Day, she reflects on sacrifice, stating, "'Brass Bell' is a song about surrendering your autonomy to something so overwhelmingly powerful you willingly relinquish your ambitions and self-worth. My intention was to draw an interesting dichotomy between the muscular nature of the song and the rather bleak, worried lyrics.” Screaming Females will be playing in Seattle on Wednesday, April 12th at Madame Lou's with Smirk and Generacion Suicida. Episode 115 Notes: We dive into the perils of Wine Drinking, Liz Phair, Jaime's hat, and why Lou doesn't go to later shows. We also write some primo fan fiction on the spot about an electric rat and our most “thirst trappy” president. The thought of it still makes me feel a little sick to the tum-tum Most importantly, We discuss a book that has been mentioned several times on this podcast: “Sweet Blood” by Pete Hautman. Music-wise, we cover Wipes, Manuela Iwansson, Pleasure Venom, and Chinese Black Metal Band Hoplite (or “Ὁπλίτης). Songs featured in Episode 115: “Wipes” - Frogger “Manuela Iwansson” - Boys of Summer Hoplite and Pleasure Venom were discussed and not actually featured. Pleasure Venom kind of fell victim to me buying the vinyl and not having a download code and me being too cheap to buy the same album twice, and “Hoplites” is a bit difficult to find on account that the name is spelled out in Greek. Check out trashsouthstreet.com to sample these bands and see a totally hawt pic of the “Jaime hat”. Josh Jurk of Garden State's own hardcore punk band, School Drugs, joins for interview No. 146. When Jared Hart was on last summer he mentioned some of the best shows from when he was growing up in the punk scene. He mentioned how Josh threw some of the best shows in New Jersey. Josh reminisces about his upbringings in this one. It all started at a local VFW in Manchester with his original band, The Jurks. Fun fact - Marissa from The Screaming Females did all of the artwork for The Jurks. The name has carried with him since and Josh jokes that the a musician's first band name has to be thought out. If you are from New Jersey - stay tuned because we get into a debate about some of the best deli's/restaurants in the area. All jokes aside, this was an episode that took on some serious subjects. School Drugs focuses on topics that could appear in the community such as addiction and mental health. Josh is the first to speak about mental health. In fact, he took it upon himself at The Fest, one of the biggest rock weekends of the year, and talking about seeing a therapist for the first time. Continuously, Josh can often be found at shows talking about addiction. He has experienced several close friends go through it and supports the charity Harm Reduction. Website can be found here: https://www.samhsa.gov/ Josh also takes the graphic design portion of the band extremely seriously. Check out his page for some samples, he does every design on his own. Josh is full of knowledge when it comes to the images people see of flyers and band tees. In fact, he is a huge fan of Danzig, but not because of the typical music reasons, but because he is a fantastic graphic designer and is big reason for some of the Misfits. School Drugs has some cool shows on the horizon and have seen organic growth over the past year or so. Keep a look out for this New Jersey band!

5...4...3...2...fun!!

i’ve been thinking a lot about storytelling. i feel like i’ve been telling stories in one form or another forever. i mean, we all do. we play make-believe as kids but i do the exact same thing now. maybe we just call it “banter” or something instead. but we riff off each other and create worlds and fantasy. i think that’s so fun, and when you find someone you immediately banter with well, it’s just such a cool connection. or we run through scenarios in our heads but we call it “anxiety” and typically keep these stories to ourselves.so many things to share about storytelling but one thing i think is so interesting is that i think my interest in telling stories has been strengthened and nurtured in therapy. when you talk to your therapist you are telling them your story. and if you’re doing it like me, every small story comes with additional context and tangents and reflection and that’s even before i give them a chance to respond. and then further reflecting on particular moments and themes allows me to connect them to other moments and themes and all of a sudden you find yourself trapped in this spider web of a life story. actually, no - i’m the spider, and i’m not trapped at all. i bounce around carefully from thread to thread, weaving new lines, rewriting old memories, eating flies.and then every time you transition to a new therapist it’s a chance to tell your entire story over again. and you’re so excited about that part of it. maybe too earnest. you weave more bits and pieces of story together and each time you think you have a better understanding of who and why you are. sometimes i’m concerned that i’m overconfident in the work that i’ve done and my ability to communicate it. i’m wondering about the performance of it all. is the story i tell about me actually me right now or a me i aspire to? can it be both? believing that someday i could write a memoir seems laughable but i want to. would you read it? it’ll be so embarrassing but it feels necessary to share it all.i’m just a few weeks into a break from formal therapy right now, but i’m still storytelling. recently it’s been with friends. in the actual real friend world. which i’m enjoying. and opening up in these spaces feels like it means something totally different than it had in therapy. i’m grateful to therapy for helping me explore my own stories but right now i’m more excited about connections and mashups and crossover episodes with friends. excited about friend stories colliding with my own and for the impact to be meaningful for them and for me.DOWNLOAD/STREAM RECORDING00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 Barry “Posh Club” Barry02:52 Hectorine “Motel Song” Hectorine07:21 Screaming Females “Zoo Of Death” Singles Too10:51 Amy O “Blueberries” Shell13:35 Empath “Drunken Angel” Drunken Angel / The Other Side16:25 Anna Meredith “Killjoy” FIBS20:07 Brave Radar “Face The Light” Brave Radar in… It’s Honey’s World21:19 Warp “Abracadabra” Traffic Control23:45 Great Grandpa “English Garden” Four of Arrows26:22 Black Marble “Shoulder” Bigger Than Life30:31 Brazilian Wax “Unicorn” Still Rippin’33:46 Dress Forms “places” we don’t dig guitars35:27 Dry Cleaning “Sit Down Meal” Boundary Road Snacks and Drinks EP39:06 Olivia’s World “SuperValu” Olivia’s World42:06 Mikal Cronin “Apathy” Mikal Cronin44:43 tombo crush “gaze aversion” text me when you get home45:52 Noera “FMLA” Pearls48:51 Walrus “Cool to Who” Cool to Who53:08 hanu vu “Order” Nicole Kidman / Anne Hathaway55:43 TOPS “Echo of Dawn” Echo of Dawn / Seven Minutes57:53 yipee! “The Mall of America, MN” The Cheese Store, MO/The Mall of America, MN59:52 Eyelash “Eating Art” Demo62:10 Macho Blush “Healing Artist” User Guide64:55 Mikayla McVey “roommates” Desert Companion67:48 Vagabon “Water Me Down” Vagabon
