What if none of this were real, but instead we were in a simulation? What would that mean about life, about the notion of reality, and about our own existence?  From award-winning, Seattle-based author Daryl Gregory comes a story following two friends on a cross-country bus tour through glitches as they grapple with secrets, love, and family — issues that are not uncommon, except these take place in a simulated world. When We Were Real follows longtime best friends JP and Dulin. When JP finds out his cancer has aggressively returned, Dulin decides it's the perfect time for one last adventure: a week-long bus tour of the Impossibles, the glitches and geographic miracles that started cropping right after the Announcement that revealed our world to be merely a digital simulacrum. The outing promises to be the trip of a (not completely real) lifetime. Unlike other sci-fi hits like The Matrix or Vanilla Sky, these characters know they are simulations. Through this self-awareness, they — as well as readers — explore what it means to be human, to be alive or even real. Through a cast of colorful characters (like a pregnant influencer determined to make her child too famous to be deleted) or the stops they make along the way (like a tunnel outside of time or a motivational-speaking avatar's compound) JP and Dulin have no shortage of things to talk about as they venture toward the tour's final stop, where the travelers may find out who is actually running the simulation. When We Were Real aims to uncover the things that really matter in life, even in an artificial world. Daryl Gregory is the award-winning author of numerous novels, including Revelator, Afterparty, and Spoonbenders, a Nebula, Locus, and World Fantasy Award finalist. His novella We Are All Completely Fine won the World Fantasy Award and the Shirley Jackson Award. He currently resides in Seattle, Washington. Matt Dinniman is a writer, artist, and musician (well, he's a bass player) from Gig Harbor, WA. He is the author of several books, including the bestselling Dungeon Crawler Carl series.   Buy the Book When We Were Real: A Novel Third Place Books

Send us a textThe Mark of the Beast remains one of Christianity's most misunderstood and sensationalized topics. Moving beyond surface-level speculation, this deep dive explores what John the Revelator actually meant when describing this mysterious mark received on the forehead or hand. Most contemporary interpretations push the Mark of the Beast into the distant future—a technological development that modern believers will never encounter. These approaches miss the crucial interpretive key found in Revelation's opening verse, where John explicitly states his vision was "signified" or shown through symbols. When we understand the biblical language and imagery John draws from, particularly Deuteronomy 6, we discover something far more relevant to everyday spiritual life. The Mark isn't primarily a physical imprint but a spiritual designation of ownership. It reveals whose authority guides your thinking (forehead) and actions (hands). This understanding transforms it from an apocalyptic curiosity to a present spiritual reality affecting believers in every generation since Eden. The panel discussion features various perspectives, from those viewing the Mark as future technology to others recognizing its roots in biblical symbolism. What emerges is a challenging realization: the Mark of the Beast isn't about microchips, tattoos, or ID systems, but about whose authority we submit to when choosing between God's commands and worldly thinking. This interpretation maintains Revelation's immediate relevance to its original first-century audience rather than relegating it to a distant future scenario. It calls believers to examine not just future technologies but present spiritual allegiances. Are we permitting our thoughts and actions to be branded by the values of the beast, or are we bearing the mark of God's ownership through obedience to His Word?Support the show

There is no doubt that Jesus was weary in His earthly journeys though there is only one reference of it. "Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour." John 4:6. As soon as He sat down on Jacob's well, the encounter with the woman of Samaria would never have happened. He was humanly thirsty, and she was spiritually thirsty. Both were able to give water to each other. However, He said to her, "But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw." (vs. 14-15). Here we see Jesus Christ the "Well of Salvation, sitting down upon "Jacob's well," and "a well of water springing up unto eternal life," entered into the woman. We never read any where else that Jesus drank of that well, but perhaps was satisified spiritually the same as her. Do not be afraid to let go of all the spiritual business when weariness happens. Instead sit down. Do not be surprised to realize that this is a very real place. The same as places of weariness that Jesus had, and Paul and John the Revelator experienced when in prisons wrote all the letters to the churches. Expect God to do things you would never expect, and you will drink of the artesian wells of eternity and be refreshed and strengthen to continue on your own journeys to the Heavenly Mount Zion, "The City whose builder and Maker is God." "We have looked up. We have seen the lovely radiance of that upper air. But our feet must walk the ways of the earth down that dreary hill past those somber trees, and into the valley, before we can press up through the mist and stand under shining skies." ~ Amy Carmichael.

Hope Breaks Through the Hard Stuff: Rev. Dr. Angela N. Parker on Advent

Settle in, listeners. Jen and Amy have invited Greek and New Testament professor and scholar, Reverend Dr. Angela N. Parker to the show to reflect on the Advent season with some words of hope and liberation. She took our butts to seminary, opening our eyes to what it looks like when you examine the scripture through the lens of womanist theology and the experiences of Black women. But as Dr. Parker tells us, “I've lived long enough to know that God will bring me through but sometimes it's hard and sometimes it hurts. But even after the hurt, the tender spots get more resilient.” There's so much to unpack in this one. Jen and Amy discuss their favorite Christmas movies and debate whether classics like Gremlins and Die Hard fit the genre  Dr. Parker explains how liberation is a collective journey, not an individual one – and how everyone, including white men, can need it. We learn how understanding the historical context of scripture is vital for its interpretation. And we also talk about some of the holiday hullabaloo we're ready to Bless and Release this season. *** Thought-provoking Quotes: “If I'm liberated, I don't want to be liberated alone.” – Dr. Angela N. Parker “We don't want to think about the early church being enslavers.” – Dr. Angela N. Parker “If our biblical text is wrestling with the idea of empire from Genesis to Revelation, we are wrestling with empire as well.” –– Dr. Angela N. Parker “When we work as a collective, we actually do better to transform society.” – Dr. Angela N. Parker “The tree at the end of Revelation 21 has the leaves for the healing of all the “Ethnae”, for all the ethnicities, for all the nations. That's what John the Revelator sees in his final vision.” – Dr. Angela N. Parker “In my own work, I talk about how I try to even get whiteness out of me. Even as an African American woman born and raised in these United States, there are elements of whiteness that are in me, on me and a part of me. That's just what we swim in.” – Dr. Angela N. Parker “Hope breaks forth in the midst of terror, fear, and overwhelm. It's normal to have [those feelings]. Don't trick yourself into ignoring them. It's best for us to acknowledge what is going on around us but to remember that hope breaks through.” – Dr. Angela N. Parker “I've lived long enough to know that God will bring me through but sometimes it's still hard and sometimes it still hurts. But even after the hurt, the tender spots get more resilient.” – Dr. Angela N. December 18, 2024Today's Reading: Revelation 6:1-17Daily Lectionary: Isaiah 34:1-2, 8-35:10; Micah 1:1-7:20; Revelation 6:1-17Now I watched when the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures say with a voice like thunder, “Come!” (Revelation 6:1)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. The four horsemen of the apocalypse. 450 words. Cool. Books have been written speculating what each horseman symbolizes. Because there's so much wrong here that it's hard to pick out just one thing that it could be. And that speaks volumes to the idea that what's coming might be even worse. But it was the Lamb who opened the seal to them. And that's even more concerning. After the sixth seal, everyone, slave and free, hides in caves, begging mountains to fall on them to hide them from the wrath of the Lamb. The daily lectionary doesn't quite line up with “Silent Night.”The might behind the angel chorus that sang to shepherds attests to the power of the God made man who will be born on Christmas. That power, that glory, that urgency for justice is found in the Christ child, too. When we pray for God to advent, we prefer the weakness of baby Jesus to the wrathful Lamb sending horsemen of death and destruction. Repent. Both pictures are the same Jesus. We live in the end times and pray, “Come, Lord Jesus.” Spare us from more tribulation. Rescue us from ourselves and the power of the foe. But the tribulation is God's tribulation. The devil is God's devil. All creation serves His will because creation has already been won back from the devil. Christ has died and risen to claim the victory. Evil is still evil, but God commands it now that it would do more than just sow tears. The evil points us to a need for salvation, and the cross not only answers the need but paints a picture of a God amidst the fray, wearing a crown of thorns, conquering death itself to save you.  Now even death and destruction simply point to the cross where the God made man, the Lamb who sits on the throne, was slain for you and for all. The catastrophes of the Revelator pull us from the fantasy that we can conquer God and His horsemen even as they drive us to the hope that the Lamb has conquered to save us. And the presence of God marks a silent night, peace on earth, not by measure of the earth, but by measure of God's Advent to save us from it. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Glory to the Father sing, Glory to the Son, our king, Glory to the Spirit be Now and through eternity. (LSB 332:8)-Rev. Break out your glass, steel, or beer bottle: This time on Shred With Shifty, we're sliding into glory with southern-rock great Derek Trucks, leader of the Derek Trucks Band, co-leader (along with wife Susan Tedeschi) of the Tedeschi Trucks Band, and, from 1999 to 2014, member of the Allman Brothers Band. Reared in Jacksonville, Florida, Trucks was born into rock 'n' roll: His uncle, Butch Trucks, was a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, and from the time he was nine years old, Derek was playing and touring with blues and rock royalty, from Buddy Guy to Bob Dylan. Early on, he established himself as a prodigy on slide guitar, and in this interview from backstage in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Trucks explains why he's always stuck with his trusty Gibson SGs, and how he sets them up for both slide and regular playing. (He also details his custom string gauges.) Trucks analyzes and demonstrates his subtle but scorching solo on “Midnight in Harlem,” off of Tedeschi Trucks Band's acclaimed 2011 record, Revelator. In it, he highlights the influence of Indian classical music, and particularly sarod player Ali Akbar Khan, on his own playing. The lead is “melodic but with Indian-classical inflections,” flourishes that Trucks says are integral to his playing: It's a jazz and jam-band mentality of “dangling your feet over the edge of the cliff,” says Trucks, and going outside whatever mode you're playing in. Throughout the episode, Trucks details his live and studio set ups (“As direct as I can get it”), shares advice for learning slide and why he never uses a pick, and ponders what the future holds for collaborations with Warren Haynes.   Full Video Episodes: http://volume.com/shifty   Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/podcast/id1690423642 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4B8BSR0l78qwUKJ5gOGIWb iHeart: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-shred-with-shifty-116270551/ Pandora: https://www.pandora.com/podcast/shred-with-shifty/PC:1001071314   Follow Chris Shiflett: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/chrisshiflettmusic Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shifty71 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@chris.shiflett Twitter: https://twitter.com/chrisshiflett71 Website: http://www.chrisshiflettmusic.com Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5tv5SsSRqR7uLtpKZgcRrg?si=26kWS1v2RYaE4sS7KnHpag   Producer: Jason Shadrick Executive Producers: Brady Sadler and Jake Brennan for Double Elvis Engineering support by Matt Tahaney and Matt Beaudion Video Editor: Addison Sauvan Graphic Design: Megan Pralle   Special thanks to Chris Peterson, Greg Nacron, and the entire Volume.com crew.

It's their debut for Verve Records, after a string of well-received albums on Dead Oceans. Joined by collaborators like Jim White of the Dirty Three—who you heard earlier this season—Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs, and his wife and songwriting partner Jo Schornikow, it finds Houck examining—what else?—the end of the world.  If one theme has run through the last few seasons of this show, it's that of “apocalypse," or revelation. The veil, no matter how hard we try and keep it pinned down, keeps slipping away. Revelator finds Houck facing uncertain future, but also, leveling up. In its mournful ballads and genuinely hilarious odes to bathroom graffiti, you hear the voice of a songwriter probing the void: “And we've ridden beyond where we could safely touch down And we're out in the void, past where we could've had turned around I tried my feet on the floor, tried to beat on the door But it didn't even make a sound Got my heart open wide But the city been shut down”  But Revelator is no dour screed; it is in fact filled with hope and good humor. In this episode, he joins us to extoll the glory of “unnecessary” art, his work on Paul Schrader's new film Oh, Canada; and the multiple apocalypses afoot. Holy Joe!: Prophet, Seer, and Revelator Interview with Just Judy In this My Life Now episode, Dallas interviews Just Judy author of, "Holy Joe!: Prophet, Seer, and Revelator." About the Book: It is 1822 in Upstate, New York when Mason Chase hires a crew of local farm hands to dig a well on his property. At the bottom of the well, a stone is found and we quickly find young Joseph Smith using this stone to find treasures said to be hidden below the earth. His new found fame as a necromancer leads to a legal trial where he is charged with deceiving people through the use of his stone. As maturity sets in, visions of treasures are set aside for visions of heavenly messengers and a new religion is born. Shortly after the publication of the Book of Mormon, elders are sent out to spread the word of this new religion and the kingdom experiences rapid growth. From his early days as a money-digger to his final days as a martyred prophet, the life of Joseph Smith is a mixture of adoration and apostasy from his people, blended with the ever present friction brought on by suspicion and mistrust from those he called gentiles–non-believers. Joseph Smith was a colorful and dramatic person, charismatic and easy to love. But, like a double edged sword or a two-sided coin, the story tells of a man who had a talent for getting on peoples' nerves. It was those other people who called him Holy Joe. Everyone who read the newspapers of the day, and those with him in the midst of the action, knew the prophet had this other name. Today, this name grabs attention and speaks to a multifaceted personality: ‘prophet, seer, and revelator, yes. He was also known as Holy Joe. If I had to think of one word to describe today's guest, E L U C I D, and his latest album, REVELATOR, it would be “fearless” in every sense of the word. Fearless in its sonic direction that infuses industrial noise, South Asian / Middle Eastern instrumentation and more, into this one-of-a-kind take on hip-hop. Fearless in its boundaryless, ultra-poetic vocal stylings. And also fearless in its subject matter that processes all of the darkness happening in this world, while never ceasing to lose faith in love and a better tomorrow. With REVELATOR, E L U C I D achieved something rare - total creative realization, where the lyrical messaging, the sound, the tone, the songwriting, all feel perfectly in tune with one and other... all building towards this overarching artistic vision that is so powerful and affecting. Just two days before the new album dropped, E L U C I D gives us an in-depth look into the making of REVELATOR, the genesis of its bold sonic direction, how the state of affairs in our world feed into this art, and so much more. After hearing this album 30, maybe 40 times now, as of the time of recording, I'm 100% comfortable saying that REVELATOR is my Album of the Year. And honestly, it is a contender for being one of the very best albums of the entire decade. This album and this artist are just that special, so you do not wanna miss this! The Plug (1:04). Even though we have dedicated quite a few episodes of this show talking about contemporary hip-hop, especially the left field, intensely wordy variety, we have not been able to settle on a name for what we see as a movement of like-minded artists at its cutting edge. One of our struggles in talking about this kind of music is that it defies easy categorization. Sure, it is "underground hip-hop" in the broadest sense, but that term has little meaning in the streaming economy, and is a somewhat outdated term aesthetically as well. As we were beginning to learn the lay of the land of who were the best abstract or "thoughtful" rappers of this era were a few years ago, we started calling the cluster of Backwoodz-associated rappers and their affiliates The Vanguard. The name didn't stick, it's probably too generic to describe the florid and intricate music that is being made. Pretty much everyone got mad when it was referred to as "Art Rap" in a piece in Complex written by friend of the program Shawn Setaro that quoted DBRP host Nate LeBlanc several times. That leaves us, who pride ourselves on a keen ability to describe this music, without an effective banner term. And frankly, these artists are too independent-minded to fall into easy categories, that is part of the reason why we fuck with them. However you try to define this sound, this scene, ELUCID is one of the premier artists of our time, a leading voice in this indescribable tangle of abstract MCs and Producers making challenging, interesting music that pushes hip-hop forward. We have interviewed ELUCID multiple times on DBRP in the past, and we have always found him to be engaging and willing to discuss his art on a bit of a deeper level than most other artists. Today we're talking to him about his new album, Revelator. The album drops October 18th, and in fact we conducted the first interview about it, kind of an unofficial kickoff of the rollout of the record. We look forward to many more listens to this album soon, to unlock its mysteries. Hopefully this interview provides some helpful context for you to consider when you are able to hear it upon release. This week's episode also has a surprise bonus interview with the Previous Industries crew. DBRP hosts Demone Carter and David Ma were able to catch up with Open Mike Eagle, Video Dave, and Still Rift at their show in San Francisco recently for a very loose conversation about their recent album Service Merchandise, one of our favorites of the year thus far. Daniel 7 is perhaps the most important chapter in the book. It is what we call a primary reference. That means it contains original prophecy that will be quoted and referenced by others such as Jesus, Paul, and John the Revelator. The young man who is healed is then questioned by the Pharisees, for they do not want to admit that Jesus is truly good and had the power to heal. The disciples, misunderstanding the man's condition, thought that his blindness was a result of sin. But Jesus proved to them that the man was not blind because of sin but rather so God could be glorified in healing him. After Jesus had healed the man he was brought in front of the Pharisees to be questioned about his newfound sight.
