Episode 176 - More Than Time - The Watch That Reminds You You're Enough - John CenaToday on Dad Space we unpack the story behind John Cena's habit of carrying two watches-one for time, one for perspective-and how dads can use these lessons to find balance, self-worth, and humility in everyday life. The Two Watches: What They RepresentThe Functional Watch:Represents the practical side of life: schedules, commitments, the daily grind. For dads, it's the reminder of responsibilities-work, family, and the ticking clock of fatherhood. The Pocket Watch of Perspective:This broken watch doesn't tell time; it holds two powerful engravings:“Comparison is the thief of joy”: A reminder to avoid comparing yourself to others or other dads, and to recognize that you are enough and worthy of love“Memento mori”: Latin for “remember you will die,” it's a call to humility, reminding us that we're all human, no better than anyone else, and to stay grounded even when we feel successful or importantCena uses the watch as a “keeper of perspective, not time”-balancing moments of low self-worth with reminders of his value, and moments of ego with reminders of his humanityLessons for DadsSelf-Worth:Like Cena, many dads struggle with feeling “not enough.” Use daily reminders-whether it's a watch, a note, or a mantra-to affirm your worth and importance to your family.Humility:Success as a dad isn't about being better than others, but about being present and grateful. “Memento mori” grounds us in reality and gratitude.Avoiding Comparison:Social media and societal expectations can lead dads to compare themselves to others. Remember: “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Focus on your unique journey and the love you bring to your family.Perspective Over Perfection:The broken watch symbolizes that life isn't about perfect timing, but about seeing things clearly and appreciating what matters most.Practical TakeawaysCreate your own “perspective anchor”-an object, phrase, or ritual that reminds you of your worth and keeps your ego in check.Share these lessons with your kids: model self-acceptance and humility, and talk openly about the dangers of comparison. When feeling overwhelmed or inadequate, pause and reflect: What would your “pocket watch” say to you right now? What's your keeper of perspective? Share your story with the Dad Space community.___https://dadspace.camusic provided by Blue Dot SessionsSong: The Big Ten https://app.sessions.blue/browse/track/258270

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel is traveling, so Rick is joined by David and Ripley, and guests Kevin and Matt. They start off with a 69k Omega X Swatch — say what? — That's a $300 watch. But it's for charity. Next up in the queue is talk of the end of the Only Watch auction, which would be the end of an era if it had actually been an era. Talk then turns to the GHPG Awards, and Ripley takes note of the brands not participating, and the significance of that in context. Gerry Bryant is a brilliant classically-trained pianist, composer, and arranger. He came from a poor inner-city Cleveland neighbourhood, and was givin an opportunity to attend the prestigious Phillips Academy, then Harvard university. He went on to get an MBA and a law degree, all the while continuing the expansion of his knowledge of different styles of music, and forming his jazz group Pocketwatch. This episode partly focuses on his Composers album, with music of Florence Price and Thomas Wiggins who was known as Blind Tom to his slave masters. Gerry reflects on how access to a musical education changed his life, and how wonderful it has been to discover and champion Black composers. One of the musicians that Gerry has collaborated with many times is the wonderful and versatile violinist Mark Cargill, whose playing is also featured in this episode. It's a long story. ‘Dissociation is used as a defense to protect a person from overwhelming pain and trauma. It is a natural ability of the brain. Hypnosis or hypnotic trance is a form of dissociation. There are a number of types of dissociation: amnesia, somnambulistic states, localized paralyses, anaesthesias, and hallucinations. Hypnosis can reproduce all of these dissociative states. The mind naturally hypnotizes itself under various conditions Hypnosis is a valuable tool to move the mind to different neurophysiological states and to get the mind to different levels of the subconscious mind. Hypnosis can also play a role in working around amnesia, since both are types of dissociation. Hyperventilation helps a person induct into a hypnotic trance. Torture, depersonalization, fear and acute anxiety stimulate the body to hyperventilate. Common objects in a person's life that can be hypnotically given a programming meaning include music, tones, colors, the sight of a book or Bible, the pyramid on the back of a dollar bill, pictures of God, silk scarfs, jewelry, lights, -93. sounds, TV programs, and countless other things. The limit to this is simply the programmer's creativity. {Enter The Multiverse} [Festival Project.™] COPYRIGHT © THE FESTIVAL PROJECT 2024 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. © -Ū.

Jace is joined by writer Trevor Fernandes Lenkiewicz and artist Ryan Best for an exclusive announcement about the latest project for Pocket Watch Press, Rise. A superhero story but with a twist, it will explore so very meta themes of masculinity in modern times through the lens of a character who derives his powers very much based on self-perception and his inherent maleness. If its anything like Trevor's previous work, we are expecting great things. Plus with artist Ryan Best pushing himself beyond the traditional look for superhero comics, we are in for one heck of a visual story. There's tons of information about the upcoming campaign, such as expected tiers and a general time frame for the launch of the campaign so listen in.

Bryan and Josh have both long been intrigued by the prolific and quirky “Video Game Development Boy Band” hailing from Utrecht, Netherlands and calling themselves Sokpop. Given the recent breakout success of the group's title, Stacklands, they decided to dive in and survey the vast back catalogue of projects that Sokpop has created. For those unaware: Sokpop is a 4 person video game development collective which has given itself an ambitious mission: launch a new game every 2 weeks. The games vary in size, shape, and scope but generally adhere to a ‘House Style' that features low-res colorful visuals and cute, chunky animations. While the discussion primarily concerns Stacklands and another title, Simmiland, from a gameplay and mechanics perspective, Bryan and Josh discuss Sokpop's approach more broadly in this podcast we're calling Sokpop Selection.Three Word Reviews:Bryan - Curious Collective CreationJosh - Rapid Fire ReleaseShow Notes:Sokpop's Patreon PageGame Design Perspective: Stacklands by JoshGames Discussed: Stacklands, Simmiland, Luckitown, Tile Tale, Pocket Watch, White Lavender, Rook, KingPins, Sproots

In looking for words to describe what the Vortic Watch Company does in taking vintage American pocket watch movements and making them into one-of-a-kind, American-crafted wrist watches, some have called “upcycling” to mind. But the Vortic process is much more. It has been a path of research and development, engineering, trial and error, and a demonstration and appreciation of the very best in the traditions of American engineering. Today On the Dogwatch we have the opportunity to talk with R.T. Custer who, along with his partner Tyler Wolfe, founded and developed Vortic. We talk with RT about the origin of Vortic, how they source and repair movements, the process of designing and manufacturing their watch cases, as well as their Military Edition that helps support the Veterans Watchmaker Initiative. We also get to hear some of RT's thoughts on the future of the company. On this episode our feature is the Veterans Watchmaker Initiative, a school that teaches the highly skilled craft of watchmaking to some of our war veterans to provide career training. Given community support, this school is free for those veterans selected to participate. You can support this initiative either by purchasing one of the Vortic Military Edition watches on Veterans day–if you can get one–or by donating directly.
