Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico

On this episode we are joined by the Sioux Falls SD indie rock band Shurr Jr. In 2015, siblings Nick and Frankie began writing music and jamming together in their mother's garage, drawing inspiration from Elliott Smith, the Avett Brothers, Title Fight, and Charmer. At the time, their sister Kelly Maxwell was teaching herself to play guitar, often listening and vibing along to their creations. The trio's musical journey took on a deeper, more personal meaning after the loss of their father, Frank—an influential member of the Omaha, NE band Fifth of May. In honor of Frank's legacy, the siblings turned to music as a way to channel their grief and keep his spirit alive. The band's name, “Sure, Junior,” is a loving tribute to Frank's iconic catchphrase. "Blondie is a Group" was a pin campaign put together by Blondie's manager as a way to cover his own screwup by picking the iconic photo for this week's album - "Parallel Lines." (PS: It didn't work and he was fired shortly after. Oops.)We all know Blondie is a group, and we also know the core of Chris Stein and Debbie Harry have given us some absolute bangers. After two records, the label wondered how they could put this group of meddling kids (loosely defined) on the top of the charts.Their solution was producer Mike Chapman. Does he come across as a bit of a jerk? Yes, resoundingly. Did the band turn in their most critically and commercially successful album to date under his production? Also, yes, resoundingly. With classics such as "One Way or Another" and "Heart of Glass," it would be hard for the label to go wrong picking a single...Find out how they did just that, and a ton more about "Parallel Lines," on this week's episode of EarWax!Thanks for listening! Based in Moncton, Thomas is also known for his work with The Session Men, a group of skilled musicians from New Brunswick. The band members include Ray Legere (fiddle, mandolin, guitar) and Jon Arseneau (guitar). Collectively, they have performed with well-known artists like Alison Krauss, The Rankins, and Natalie MacMaster. Thomas's band focuses on acoustic roots, folk, and Americana music. In 2022, they toured Atlantic Canada to promote their album Parallel Lines, which features songs from Thomas's vast songwriting repertoire presented in their original, stripped-down forms. Catherine MacLellan, an acclaimed folk singer-songwriter from Prince Edward Island, has built a successful career with her deeply personal and reflective music. Known for albums like Silhouette and The Raven's Sun, she has won multiple awards, including Junos and East Coast Music Awards. Catherine, the daughter of legendary Canadian musician Gene MacLellan, continues to honor her father's legacy while creating her own path in the folk music scene. Catherine recently produced the latest album for Robert Thomas and the Session Men, which includes their new single "A River Runs Through." This collaboration showcases her production talents alongside Thomas's songwriting expertise, bringing a unique depth to the project. As part of their tour, Robert Thomas and the Session Men recently stopped in New Glasgow, where they recorded an interview with East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh at the Shoebox Cantina and Shoebox Studios. It's about the founding of the band, ascending to the heights of pop success, and the hazards of fortune. Famous names march through these pages―Warhol, Bowie, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and more-but you can get famous names anywhere. In a special podcast in honor of Israel's annual Book Week celebration, Haaretz Weekly is spotlighting two female Israeli journalists turned authors: Dina Kraft, co-author of Hannah Pick-Goslar's memoir “My Friend Anne Frank”; and Ruth Marks Eglash, a journalist who reported from Israel for the Washington Post for eight years before writing her debut novel, “Parallel Lines.” The world knows Anne Frank as a spirited teenager through her diary recounting her years in hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam. But her childhood friend Hannah Pick-Goslar knew her entire story from its hopeful beginning to its tragic end. “My Friend Anne Frank” – currently a New York Times best-seller – was written by Pick-Goslar and Kraft. In an interview with Haaretz Weekly host Allison Kaplan Sommer, Kraft recounts her experience interviewing the 93-year-old Holocaust survivor during the last six months of her life. Pick-Goslar died in 2022, before the book was completed. Kraft shares how Anne and Hannah met as young children in Amsterdam, after their Jewish families fled Hitler's Germany, and were inseparable friends as they grew into teenagers. Until one day, following the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands, when Hannah went to see her friend and was “completely shocked to see breakfast dishes still in the sink and beds left unmade, which was never the case in a very orderly Frank household.” Years later, as Kraft describes, the two friends had a heartbreaking reunion at the fence separating them in Bergen-Belsen. Pick-Goslar remembered finding her once-vivacious friend “freezing, starving, with just a filthy blanket to keep her warm.” *** Also on the podcast, Ruth Marks Eglash tells the story behind her novel “Parallel Lines,” which follows modern-day Jerusalem life and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict through the eyes of three young women: one Jewish secular Israeli, one ultra-Orthodox Jew and one East Jerusalem Palestinian, who live side-by-side but in entirely different worlds. Her book – inspired by having to make sense of the roller-coaster of conflict and violence in Israel's capital to her own teenage daughter while working as deputy bureau chief for The Washington Post – focuses on “how this conflict that we write about as journalists and that we read about as adults is impacting young people.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Go-Betweens were a great Aussie band of the 80's - they wrote erudite world-weary songs about life and their loves with zilch success for their efforts.  Their style, a mix of Velvet Underground's 3rd Album's gritty simplicity, Bob Dylan's narrative skills and Television's clear production highlighting guitar never brought them the success that their talent deserved. We did, though, find a fan from Dublin with an extraordinary appreciation of the Go-Betweens. We look at some emails we've received, including Rein who remembers Countdown, and note the comments from comedian Bill Bailey, who is less than complimentary about Coldplay!   Our Album You Must Hear before You Die” this time around is “Parallel Lines” by Blondie.  A great album from 1978, with a couple of surprise Aussie connections.
