Johnny "Bee" Badanjek got his professional start in music, at the ripe old age of 16 as the drummer for the Detroit rock and roll band Billy Lee and The Rivieras, later changing their name to Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, where he was described as an "unknown genius" for his drum break on their single "Devil with a Blue Dress On". he co-founded The Rockets, in which he was the drummer and vocalist, as well as songwriter.   He's toured Europe with Nils Lofgren as well as recording an album with him.  Besides the already mentioned, He's worked in some compacity (Playing or writing) with The Romantics,  Broken Toys,  Dr. John, Ronnie Montrose, Edgar Wither, Bob Segar,  Ted Nugent, the legendary  Alice Cooper and others. He has also stayed extremely active in the local rock scene with bands such as The Stammering Flames, The Howling Diablos and The Murder Hornets to name a few. This brings us to want we're here to talk about tonight. Johnny is a self-taught artist whose work has graced album covers, art collection and gallery walls for years. Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce a true renaissance man, Mr. Johnny Bee Badanjek.

Love really IS in the air as we approach Valentine's Day.  On today's episode, I'm joined by the love of my life, my bride Ms Margs, and our friends, Lindsey Janes and Will Derasmoto, to celebrate their love and to toast to their recent engagement! The conversation includes the story of how, despite the age gap and despite being in different phases of life during the early days of their relationship, they became the couple that they are today.  Similar to Margs and my story, in VERY short order, Lindsey & Will pulled off “The Trifecta” by adopting their first dog, getting engaged, and buying a house! They share their mutual love of ALL music, including the likes of Bob Segar, Fleetwood Mac, Zach Bryan, and The Hollies.  And we wrap up with a game of “Tried & True Trivia w/ Andy & Margs” and finally Margs and I share our “Top 10 Lessons Learned From 28 Years of Marriage.”Join us, and let's see where this energy takes us!Kentucky Derby Announcers Calling Mage to Win! https://youtu.be/ZH02-Yuw2gE?si=6h4Erygzg2RSVPWvNight Moves / Bob Segar https://youtu.be/ePCiVK5Jjos?si=O5VOBFXWHFMiFOwNLong Cool Woman in a Black Dress (REMIX) / Moonlight https://youtu.be/F0GbfUyjyKE?si=hpN8asELZT_lEnK2Silver Springs / Fleetwood Mac https://youtu.be/eDwi-8n054s?si=dYfQYycxU9cehJcR

So much new music and only 3 hours to share it. When I was in my teens, radio was a beacon to the world of music. Deejays would assemble shows that reflected their taste while introducing us to new releases by known artists and new artists we needed to know. It was an art form. Let's run down some rabbit holes of the lost & nearly forgotten, or new tracks by known artists, while being cradled in sonic familiarity. Ahhhhh. The art, or at least the attempted art, of weaving together songs and artists that bring enjoyment and information to the listener.  1. Van Morrison / Stormy Monday Blues-Lonely Avenue2. Ray Charles / Hard Times 3. Hector Anchondo / Just Forget It 4. Stan and the Chain Gang / Hole in My Pocket5. Son House / Preachin'Blues6. Gina Sicilia / Unchange7. Keb Mo / Lean on Me 8. What the Riff?!?
1976 - November: Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band “Night Moves”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 21, 2021 35:43

If Bob Seger sounds like he's experienced it all on his breakout album Night Moves, well, he kind of has.  Seger got his start in the music industry in 1961, and this album is his ninth studio album, though the first to credit the Silver Bullet Band on the album cover.  Many of the songs reflect on earlier times, successes and failures of the past, with a wistfulness.  Detroit native Robert Clark (aka Bob) Seger's music has been described as roots rock and heartland rock, and there are similarities between the blue collar sensibilities of Seger's music and others like Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp.  Segar had his first hit back in 1968 with "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man," but didn't follow up with hit singles afterwards.  He turned to working with backing bands, touring with Eric Clapton and joining with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section (who would play on four of the nine songs on Night Moves).  After forming the Silver Bullet Band in 1974 Segar began seeing some interest with singles like "Katmandu" and the release of the album "Live Bullet"  just prior to Night Moves.  However, Night Moves was the one that put him over the top where he would remain for the rest of the 70's and 80's.Many of the songs have a theme of remembering the past, including the title track.  Seger completed his "farewell tour" in 2019.  However, we still have an incredible catalogue of music available thanks to Bob Segar.  We hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane.  Night MovesSeger says his title track was inspired after watching the 1973 film, “American Graffiti,” and he realized HE had a story to tell about growing up, and an Italian girlfriend he had one summer. “Ain't it strange how the night moves?”  The change in seasons forms a metaphor for growing up - being young in the summertime, and looking back "with autumn closin' in."Rock and Roll Never Forgets“So you're a little bit older and a lot less bolder than you used to be…” Seger wrote this at the ripe old age of 31!  While only making it to number 41, this tribute to Rock & Roll and Chuck Berry has taken on a timelessness as a classic rock song.SunburstWe felt that the intro to this beautiful deep track has a similar sound and feel to “Dear Prudence” from the Beatles. There are two clear movements in the music from soft, to rocking, to soft again.  The song discusses an introverted performer on the stage, comparing him to entertainment in the Roman Colosseum.  Main StreetThe second single from the album,  Seger is again sharing a peek into his life growing up in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Anne Street was right off Main Street, and there was the pool hall and dancing girls with R&B bands playing on the weekends.  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “The Muppet Show”)This variety show would draw in a number of A-list celebrities for an evening of entertainment with Kermit, Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, and the rest of the Muppets. STAFF PICKS:Tonight's The Night (Gonna Be Alright) by Rod StewartBrian features a seduction song from Rod Stewart, and it was actually banned by the BBC for the line "spread your wings and let me come inside."  Public demand eventually caused the ban to be lifted, and the song went to number 1 on both the UK and the US shortly thereafter.Jeans On by David DundasWayne brings us a song by British musician and actor David Dundas.  It was first featured as a television advertising jingle for Brutus Jeans, and the popularity of the commercial led to the recording of "Jeans On" as a full length song.  "It's the weekend, and I know that you're free so pull on your jeans and come on out with me."Nights Are Forever Without You by England Dan and John Ford ColeyBruce's staff pick is from Texas duo Dan Wayland (aka England Dan) Seals and John Edward (aka John Ford) Coley.  They originally had a hit with "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight," which was written by Parker McGee who also wrote "Nights Are Forever Without You."  Dan Seals would go on to a country career in the 1980's, scoring 11 number one country hits including "Meet Me In Montana."Blinded By The Light by Manfred Mann's Earth BandRob brings us  this hit originally written by Bruce Springsteen, but  finding fame through Manfred Mann's Earth Band.  Manfred Mann changed the lyrics slightly, and Springsteen has joked about confusion over the lyrics, claiming that “it was not until Manfred Mann rewrote the song to be about a feminine hygiene product that it became popular.”  This version hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Theme to the motion picture CarrieNothing like finishing out the podcast on a scary note!  The motion picture "Carrie" was released in November 1976.

At 73 years of age, Alice Cooper has every right to be excitedly entering the twilight years of a stellar career.Instead, he has just released a new album Detroit Stories and has announced plans to record the next one already. The man is more than a legend, he is a metal God, and one whos indelible stamp will be left forever on the metal scene for which he has almost literally given his soul.HEAVY caught up with Alice from his home base last week for a refreshing and open chat about life through the eyes of The Godfather of Shock Rock. The first port of call was to wish the great man a happy belated birthday.“I’m 73 but I'm probably more like 40,” he joked. “I quit drinking and doing all the bad stuff 38 years ago and I never smoked cigarettes so that's a big plus also. I can go on stage and do five shows a week no problem, whereas usually, guys my age are doing one or two shows a week! I'm not just in the Alice Cooper band, I'm also in the (Hollywood) Vampires so I've got two tours and two bands and four albums, that kind of thing. I'm working on three albums right now and Detroit Stories just came out! And I play golf every day (laughs)."Detroit Stories has been universally praised by critics and fans alike, a fact Cooper puts down to releasing the right album at the right time."I think people were waiting for a fun album to come out,” he shrugged, “a hard rock album that's fun to listen to and I think that's what this one is. Hopefully, people are getting up for it and getting a nice lift from this album."The album focuses on the Golden Era of music from the city of Detroit, with Cooper crediting a large part of his success to the lasting impact being part of that movement."You can't really cover anything with 13 songs,” he said, “but we tried to cover every kind of music in Detroit. There's blues there, there's Motown, mostly hard rock - Detroit is a guitar-driven hard rock town - because when we moved there from L.A... L.A had The Doors and they had Love and bands like that and San Francisco had their Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane and New York had their bands but in Detroit, we didn't fit in anywhere except Detroit (laughs) so when we went to Detroit we met Iggy & The Stooges and Ted Nugent and Bob Segar and Suzi Quatro so we fit right in there and at the same time I was from Detrot - that's my hometown - so we were welcomed with open arms. That's really where a lot of our stuff came out. That's where "18" broke and everything big happened for us out of Detroit."With rock and roll starting to reclaim its rebellious nature, Cooper admits that the future of the music he loves and helped to pioneer is in good hands."I think now rock and roll, in general, is an outcast which I kinda think is a good thing. When rock and roll first started it was a bunch of rock and roll kids - we were like pirates - we weren't the main charts at all. It was pop music with The Beach Boys and The Four Seasons and The Motowns and we were the rock and roll guys looking in because we had a whole different attitude about rock and roll. Our rock and roll was more dangerous. Our rock and roll was sort of like 'can we really put that on the radio?' and then rock and roll got so big that it became the focal point of everything and I think in some ways it lost a bit of its edge. So now that rock and roll is back on the outside looking in I think you're gonna get edgier bands coming out. I think young kids right now are sitting there in Australia learning Guns N Roses songs and learning Aerosmith songs, a bunch of 18-year-old kids, and that's great. You're gonna see a whole crop of new rock and roll bands come out."In the full interview, Alice talks about Detroit Stories in more details, his ambitious plan to write, demo and record the next album completely on the road, the variety of music and genres on Detroit Stories, his favourite live performances, fitting in musically, his five Commandments of Rock and some special advice on submitting your music and how to protect it.

During his 10 years (and counting!) as a member of The Wild Feathers, Joel King and his bandmates have released four well-received studio albums and a live record, played hundreds upon hundreds of concerts all around the country and toured with legendary musicians like Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and Bob Segar. Prior to his time with the accomplished Nashville-based Americana outfit, King — who plays bass and shares vocal duties in The Wild Feathers — was living in Oklahoma and working hard to make a living as the front man of a rock band called The Effects. A few days before The Wild Feathers released its latest album, Medium Rarities, on Nov. 20, King spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas about the collection of B-sides, covers and unreleased material, as well as many of the standout moments from his decade in the band. Of course, the conversation eventually shifted to King's previous projects. Over the course of the hour-long discussion, he talked about making decent money and playing out often in high school bands like Rhythmic Overdose and The Denizens, touring avidly and even playing to American troops in the Middle East in The Effects, being courted by major labels after starting what would become The Wild Feathers, and what he hopes to do with the band once life returns to some semblance of normalcy. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. Well, if you tuned in last week you know this is our last episode! Call it a hiatus, cuz, you never know what might happen. But it looks like this is it. We've both had a lot of good times making this, learned a ton, and had the opportunity to work on something we were both proud of. We go into better detail as to why in the episode. This week is a playlist that was pretty open to interpretation. We both kind of went different routes. Since we don't have them on the thumbnail, Chance's selections are: Red Foot by Fortezza, Reaper by Mormon Goth, Camel Crickets by Matty Garau, Pocketwatch by Tristan Smith, and Don't Dream It's Over by Crowded House. Nick went with So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish by A Perfect Circle, Money Trees by Kendrick Lamar, Here I Go Again by Whitesnake, My Way by Frank Sinatra, and Against The Wind by Bob Segar and the Silver Bullet Band. After doing well with their 1980 self-titled album, Canadian rock band Loverboy would head into the stratosphere with their second studio album entitled Get Lucky. Benefiting from a photogenic lead singer (Mike Reno) clad in read leather pants, Loverboy would ride the MTV wave to the top of the rock and pop charts. Loverboy was founded in 1979 by front man Mike Reno and guitarist Paul Dean, who met when Reno was working at a steakhouse and heard Dean playing guitar in a bus station behind the restaurant. Success came quickly, with hits like "Turn Me Loose” and "The Kid is Hot Tonite” from their first album. The name Loverboy came from Paul Dean's dream inspired by the Cover Girl fashion magazine. “Cover Boy” then became “Loverboy,” and the name stuck.Loverboy is still out performing, and Reno still wears the headband. While it made a fashion statement at the time, he claims it was to keep the sweat from getting in his eyes. The band is the same in its entirety today, except for Scott Smith, their original bass player, who was lost at sea when a rogue wave hit his sailboat. He was replaced by bassist Ken "Spider" Sinnaeve in 2001.Grab your red leather pants and sing along with this hit album. When It's OverThis their second single, and the second track on the album. It made it to number 26 on the charts. It tells the story of a guy waiting for the failure of a bad relationship so he can get the girl.Working for the WeekendYou will recognize this track from the starting cowbell if you ever heard 96 Rock's “5 O'Clock Whistle” back in the day. This is the lead single from the album, and went to number 29. Paul Dean was walking on the beach on a Wednesday afternoon, thinking about how everyone was busy at work, waiting for the weekend. With the band’s feedback, the line "waiting for the weekend" became "working for the weekend."Lucky OnesA hopeful track, this song gives the album its name. “Don't ask me how, but guess who hit the big time?”Take Me To the TopA deeper cut - though still a hit single on a single-heavy album. The synthesizer intro is distinctive. This track was actually a demo that made it right onto the album without a studio version. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the Motion Picture “Halloween II”You have to have a creepy theme from a spooky movie if your profiling music from October, right? Villain Michael Myers also debuted on television for the first time in October 1981, as the original "Halloween" appeared on the networks - heavily edited.STAFF PICKS:“Talk Dirty” by John EntwistleWayne's staff pick brings us a solo outing from “The Ox,” John Entwistle, bassist from The Who. This song was a minor hit at the time, when members of The Who were engaged in solo projects. Joe Walsh takes lead guitar duties on this one.“Destroyer” by The KinksBruce features a hit off their 19th album that was incredibly popular for a rock song at the time. The Kinks make reference to two previous songs, "Lola" and "All Day and All of the Night." Stop! Hold on! Stay in control...“Tryin' to Live My Life Without You” by Bob SegarBrian's staff pick is a live rendition of a song originally written by Larry Williams and released by Otis Clay in late 1972. Segar's version went to number 5, so it was much more popular than the original.“In Your Letter” by REO SpeedwagonRob features a do-wop song from REO Speedwagon's hit album “Hi Infidelity.” Despite the 60's sound, this song is not a cover. Keyboardist Gary Richrath wrote this song after finding a letter from his ex-wife indicating that his wife had left him...for their drug dealer. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Theme from the Television Show “Hill Street Blues” by Mike PostThis instrumental theme was on the charts at the time.

Popcorn Talk Network, the online broadcast network that features movie discussion, news, interviews and commentary proudly presents “I Could Never Be.” Kenny Aronoff is one of, if not the greatest, pop/rock drummers of all time. He has played with John Mellencamp, The Smashing Pumpkins, Bob Segar, Jon Bon Jovi, The Rolling Stones, and The Beatles. He has played drums on more than 60 Grammy-nominated recordings and over 300 million records sold feature his work. What sets Aronoff apart from other musicians is his dedication, putting almost nothing ahead of his musical success. He had the bug from the first moment he saw The Beatles on television in 1964. From that moment on, he practiced daily, and perfected his craft. Almost 50 years later, he performed on stage with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, a testament to his never-ending drive. Growing up in Detroit in the 60's when the streets sang and flourished with the sound of Motown and all of its artists, the Soul of Aretha Franklin and Jackie Wilson, and many Gospel artists proved to be the training camp of life for David Isaac. David became involved in the music industry as a young musician as Detroit evolved into the place for Funk bands in the 70’s from the likes of Parliament/Funkadelic (which he briefly worked with) or Rock from Bob Segar, he became an Engineer and Programmer as it became the home of R&B, Techno, and Gospel from artists like Anita Baker, DeBarge, The Winans, or Juan Atkins in the 80’s (all which he worked with), then he became a Producer in the 90’s as Hip-Hop and Rap made its mark in Detroit from such artists as Eminem, and J. Dilla, all which explains the energy int the environment of Detroit. After working with artists like Parliament/Funkadelic, R. Kelly, Stevie Wonder, El Debarge, Aaliyah, KEM, Aretha Franklin, Barry White, The Clark Sisters, Thomas Whitfield, Fred Hammond, Anita Baker and more, David decided (with the influence from top musicians and engineers) to make the move to Los Angeles, California. There he worked with such artists as Madonna, Michael Jackson, Puff Daddy, Babyface, Billy Idol, Whitney Houston, Bette Midler, Toni Braxton, and more within his first eight months in L.A.! David met and began to work with Bass Legend and Producer, Marcus Miller, and from there he used all of his talents with such artists as Luther Vandross, Eric Clapton, Wayne Shorter, David Sanborn, and Roberta Flack, to films such as “I Think I Love My Wife”, “Head Of State”, “Love Jones”, “The 6th Man”, “Serving Sara” and more, to television’s “Everybody Hates Chris”, to producing the Funk ride at the opening of Seattle’s “Experience Music Project”. So far, David has earned three Grammy Awards and many nominations. You can hear some of his work on Chris Rock’s latest movie,“Good Hair”. He is also wrapping up his own forthcoming R&B/Funk CD with the help of a many R&B legends, like Patrice Rushen, Marcus Miller, Nathan Leftenant from Cameo, and James “D-Train” Williams. The single, “Let This Party Be” is creating quite buzz around the world. David also is developing tutorials and a website that empowers anyone to be a professional producer or mix engineer online.
