Could cannabis be an effective treatment for pain? To help answer that question, we hear from Dr. Steven Wright of Colorado, a physician with expertise in treating pain and preventing addiction. Listen to the first part of a two-part series focusing on cannabis in pain treatment: the positives, negatives, and unknowns.
When properly prescribed, controlled medicines can relieve suffering for millions of people across the world. At the same time, some of these medicines can be harmful if diverted to illegal purposes. While we often hear that that the United States consumes more prescription opioids than any other country in the world, is this really accurate? To help answer this question we need to turn to scientists instead of politicians. Today’s episode takes an international perspective and speaks with Willem Scholten from The Netherlands, a legendary pharmacist, researcher, and consultant who focuses on the regulatory barriers to the treatment of pain and access to controlled medicines. A link to one of his recent articles is available for free at the following internet link: Access to Controlled Medications: Barriers, Measuring Adequacy of Consumption, and Current Developments https://jied.lse.ac.uk/articles/10.31389/jied.59/
We continue to hear stories about patient abandonment whenever the prescribing or dispensing of prescription opioids are involved. Some doctors have told their patients that they can no longer prescribe opioids because the FDA, DEA, or CDC prohibited them from doing so. This of course is not true; states, not the federal government, regulate the practice of medicine. The following podcast explores the topic of patient abandonment with Mr. Ron Chapman, an attorney with the Chapman Law Group. Depending on the patient and their condition, a voluntary and consensual reduction in dosage or substitution of certain pain medications may actually help. However, there is ample evidence that involuntary tapering is also occurring across the United States, and without consent. This practice not only violates medical ethics, evidence exists that involuntary tapering without consent has resulted in increased pain and even suicide. We discuss voluntary and involuntary opioid tapering with Dr. Beth Darnell of Stanford University, as well as her current study involving voluntary tapers with patient consent: https://empower.stanford.edu/
