Highlights from the August 4, 2022 print edition of the Rio Blanco Herald Times 100 years ago the meeker herald wrote “We have finally located the meanest man in town. He stumbled upon a fine large “cache” of the stuff that makes things look bright, in the county road machinery building, last Sunday evening, but instead of putting a select few of his friends “next” as he should have done, goes and tells the wrong people, with the result that the exhilarating fluid fell into alien hands, as it were.” For more enigmas, or to prove that the more things change, the more they stay the same, take a gander at the Day's Gone By section, somewhere in the paper. Where you ask? You're just gon' have ta find out by lookin' at every single page…maybe you'll even stumble across some like….news….or whatever. Just stuff going on, ion your general vicinity, funded by your tax dollars….not that any of that matters. During a special meeting last Friday, RBC Commisioners approved the hiring of two full-time employees for the communications department. The hires will allow the county to take on new broadband customers following the departure of Visionary Broadband, and are expected to generate enough revenue to pay for themselves. https://www.theheraldtimes.com/county-beat-august-2-2022/ Oe'R in Rangely, Town Trustees had a mildly eventful July, though no major decisions were made. Town Trustee Don Davidson expressed concerns about Colorado Senate Bill 21-260, aimed at improving transportation infrastructure in the state, saying that it supports advances on the Front Range at the expense of the Western Slope. https://www.theheraldtimes.com/rangely-trustees-report-for-july-2022/ Meeker Elementary Principal Andi Murphy has resigned, just a few eeks before the start of the 2022-23 school year. Meeker School District superintendent Chris Selle, who has a principal's license, will act as interim elementary school principal until the right candidate is hired. Barone Middle School will also have a new principal this year, with the first day of school set for August 22. https://www.theheraldtimes.com/changes-coming-to-meeker-school-district/ First responders, family and friends gathered at the 6th Street Field in Meeker on Tuesday to celebrate National Night Out with the community. You can find more pictures on our website. Local sports are starting back up this Coming Monday, August 8, including cross country, softball and volleyball. Find all the schedule details at opne of the the links in the description, in the sports section, or online. https://www.theheraldtimes.com/cowboy-cross-country-softball-and-volleyball-begin-monday/sports/ One hundred-years after the historic Colorado River Compact allocated 15 million acre feet of water between seven states in the arid west, the situation has grown dire. On June 15, US Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Camille Touton issued a call to action for all seven states in the 1922 Compact to come up with a plan to save 2-4 million acre feet of water. In response, the upper basin states, made up of Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado created a 5 point plan, which among other things, implores lower basin states to take meaningful action to address their overuse of and depletions of Lake Mead and Lake Powell. That's Rebecca (Becky) Mitchell, Director of the Colorado Water Conservation Board Upper Colorado River commissioner, speaking at the CLUB 20 policy meeting in Rangely last month. More on the dire state of water shortages and Colorado river compact negotiations in the west are at https://www.theheraldtimes.com/colorado-river-compact-discussed-at-club-20/rio-blanco-county/

Episode 88 of Rio Blanco County News. Featuring highlights from the June 23, 2022 print edition of the Rio Blanco Herald Times. _____________________________________________________________ Good news for ongoing Rangely projects was shared at the latest trustee meeting, including positive feedback from a LARP group who recently visited the area. Enjoying spectacular scenery and a delicious meal at Trappers Lake Lodge is hard to top, but if you also happen to be a coupon fan, allow me to make your day. All you have to do is check page 2A of this week's edition for some sweet, sweet savings. A shortage of permethrin has nixed Meeker's aerial mosquito spraying this year. In the market for a new career? The help wanted ads are on page 8B this week. Fair is in the air, with just over a month left until the event officially kicks off Aug. 1 Area 4-Hers participated in a five-day expo last week and visited with representatives from Colorado State University, who were on a tour of northwest Colorado counties. Lucas Turner was on location this week to photograph the Piceance East Douglas Herd Management Area between Meeker and Rangely before a planned gather by the Bureau of Land Management. _____________________________________ Nine months after the jail closure, it's looking like the county will net around half a million dollars in savings per year. While that's good news on the surface, it's not all sunshine and roses. Local police departments are facing challenges due to the increased time and cost associated with transporting inmates. Here's the breakdown. _____________________________________ The primary is coming up this Tuesday, and we'll be on-location reporting results as they come in. If you haven't yet, take some time this weekend to learn about the people on your ballot. Then V-O-T-E!
Episode 87 of Rio Blanco County News. Featuring highlights from the June 16, 2022 print edition of the Rio Blanco Herald Times. It's primary election season and ballots are out to all registered Rio Blanco County voters. Locally four candidates are running for two seats, District 1 County Commissioner and Sheriff. Rio Blanco County Republican party leaders hosted forums last week for the contested primary races in Meeker and Rangely, where candidates were asked to respond to four questions after giving their opening statements. https://www.theheraldtimes.com/gop-hosts-forums-for-commissioner-sheriff-candidates Despite an entire page of election coverage in this edition, the front page was clear of any politics….well….except of course for the advertisements. PAID advertisements, that is. That's right, in the latest SHOCKING development, we now sell advertisements. Some are even saying this innovation could revolutionize the newspaper industry. WATCH OUT social media. You're days are numbered…. Anyway, moving past the news feed, lets talk about the news….news. This week's feature stories cover two very distinct, but still impressive accomplishments. On the west side of the county, Rangely High School graduate Autumn Curdy received the state Masonic Scholarship and plans to head to the University of Colorado–Denver this fall to pursue a degree in healthcare. https://www.theheraldtimes.com/rangely-grad-wins-state-masonic-scholarship Annnd back on the east side, Dr. Travison Anderson of Pioneers Medical Center discussed his love of biking, following the completion of a 4200 mile coast to coast road trip….on bike. He completed the trip on four segments, the first of which was back in 2008. https://www.theheraldtimes.com/anderson-bikes-across-u-s/meeker/ Congratulations Autumn and Travis on your inspiring accomplishments. I'll use this burst of motivation to… complete producing this podcast. Gotta start somewhere… This week Rio Blanco County Commissioners Ty Gates, Ginny Love and Jennifer O'hearon went about their regular business of work sessions, meetings, and more work sessions…. Topics covered included facilities, the potential of a new waterline at the meeker airport, the exit of visionary broadband, and more. One notable decision was the restoration of $13 maintenance cost for the Dominion Voting Systems that commissioners previously removed from the budget. Commissioner O'Hearon voted no on the motion after inquiring about other potential voting systems. County attorney Don Steerman said clear-ballot, the system used in Garfield county would cost $145K plus training and maintenance. Commissioner Gates said he didn't think there was time to get a new system in place for this year, nor find 145K in the budget, but agreed that reviewing the differences between proposed systems would be a good idea. There was quite a lot more, if you can believe it, in this week's county beat. Probably worth a look, if you want to be informed about how your tax dollars are being used. Just remember, the meetings keep happening so…you might have to make a habit of reading the paper…..you know. Or attending the meetings, or watching them on youtube. Or you could just read the paper. Look I was going to mention some other news but…it's too much. Plus we already reported on it. YA ungrateful bastards! I mean…thank you for your support…. Keep your head up, eyes peeled. The political ads are everywhere, EVERYWHERE! Wouldn't want one to COME OUT OF NOWHERE Stay vigilant. Stay alert. Stay safe. Stay…..a supporter of community journalism Newsie out
