In this episode, we sit down with Christine Jeffs, co-founder of Acuti Sharpening, to talk about why sharpening isn't optional—it's essential.   Christine shares how she got started in the sharpening business and how Acuti Sharpening came to life alongside co-founder Melia Lewis, RDH. We unpack the often-overlooked role instrument sharpness plays in ergonomics, efficiency, patient comfort, and long-term career longevity.   This conversation goes beyond the what and into the why. Christine explains how sharpening directly impacts clinical outcomes and why making it a consistent habit—not an afterthought—can change the way hygienists practice. Whether you're new to sharpening or know you should be doing it more regularly, this episode offers clarity, motivation, and practical insight.   What You'll Hear in This Episode   How Christine got into the sharpening space   The origin of Acuti Sharpening   Why sharp instruments matter for clinicians, patients, and careers   How to build sharpening into a regular clinical routine Resources: Acutisharpening@gmail.com

The Nifty Thrifty Dentists

In this episode of the Nifty Thrifty Dentists Podcast, Dr. Glenn Vo sits down with Dr. Joy Void-Holmes, CEO & Founder of Dr. Joy, RDH, to unpack one of the biggest challenges facing dental practices today: rising hygiene wages paired with shrinking reimbursements. Dr. Joy brings nearly 30 years of experience across clinical dentistry, education, and business strategy to explain why hygiene should no longer be viewed as a cost center, but instead as a profit and practice valuation engine. They discuss how insurance mix, business literacy, training, and clear expectations on both sides of the chair can dramatically change hygiene performance, team retention, and long-term practice value. If you're a practice owner struggling with hygiene staffing, compensation, production, or burnout, this episode will shift how you think about your hygiene department.

Nursing achieved self-regulation a century ago – so why not dental hygiene? Your host Matt Crespin explores this with Cindy Gadbury-Amyot and Sylvie Martel, lead authors of the ADHA's newly released white paper on self-regulation. With 97% of Canadian dental hygienists self-regulated, Sylvie shares lessons from a 30-year journey of patience, resilience and coalition-building. Meanwhile, Cindy sounds the alarm on threats like Missouri's Oral Preventive Assistant pilot project – and explains why similar legislation is being introduced across the U.S. This episode tackles the big questions: Who should determine scope of practice? How does regulation by dental boards limit access to care? And what will it take to move the profession forward? Whether you're new to the self-regulation conversation or have been advocating for decades, this is essential listening.Guests: Cynthia C. Kim McCrady got started in the field of dentistry over 30 years ago, working her way up as a recall coordinator, dental assistant, and eventually RDH. She later became co-founder of a provider centric support organization, Signature Dental Partners, and, fast-forward to now, is an author of a children's oral health book. Her book, Plaque Poop, provides simplified oral hygiene instructions to children and was written with the focus of preventing dental cavities. I love highlighting her story because it's an example of how you can use your training as a dental hygienist to work outside of the operatory and still help people improve their oral health!

Believe it or not, some topics from that first 1926 issue are still conversations we're having a century later. What if your child's sleep struggles, picky eating, speech issues, or chronic congestion weren't random—but signs of an underlying oral function and airway problem? In this episode of The Integrative Health Podcast, I sit down with Chelsea Madison, RDH, Certified Myofunctional Therapist, IBCLC, and Infant Oral Motor Specialist, to uncover the overlooked connection between the airway, tongue posture, facial development, and whole-body health.Chelsea shares her journey into this specialty after her own child experienced symptoms of tongue tie and oral dysfunction. She explains how the tongue, lips, and facial muscles shape the jaws, support the airway, influence sleep quality, and even impact gut health and behavior.Together, they explore how improper tongue posture, mouth breathing, and unresolved oral restrictions can lead to narrow jaws, sleep apnea, speech difficulties, feeding issues, and long-term structural problems. Chelsea also breaks down when ties actually need to be addressed, why function—not appearance—matters most, and why myofunctional therapy is essential before and after any release. If you've ever wondered whether your child's struggles—or your own—may be rooted in the airway or oral function, this episode is a must-listen.Dr. Jen and myofunctional therapist Chelsea Madison discuss how tongue posture, oral function, and airway development impact sleep, feeding, behavior, orthodontics, and long-term health. Learn how myofunctional therapy supports proper development in children and adults.PODCAST: Thank you for listening please subscribe and share! Have you been diagnosed with restless leg syndrome - but the iron pills or medications you've been given for it aren't giving you any relief? Do you struggle with chronic fatigue, and you've been told it's from restless leg syndrome, but nothing you try makes you feel more rested? If you've ever spent nights Googling “restless leg syndrome treatment” or “restless leg syndrome causes,” you know how frustrating RLS is. When I was diagnosed with restless leg syndrome in middle school, I felt the same confusion and frustration about my RLS. I was told it was because I had low iron. I took the supplement, and it maybe helped a little...but I still felt exhausted throughout the day. It wasn't until I became a functional health practitioner that I figured out what was causing my restless leg syndrome - and how to treat restless leg syndrome for myself in a way that actually WORKED. Now - I've found COMPLETE restless leg syndrome relief (which my husband is so grateful for!). And today, I'm going to teach you how you can do the same. In today's episode, we're diving into the real root causes of Restless Leg Syndrome — the ones most doctors never mention. You'll learn how restless leg syndrome connects to your brain, iron levels, airway health, and even your gut health — and what steps you can take to finally find restless leg syndrome relief naturally. Restless leg syndrome isn't random, and you're not stuck with it for forever. It's time to teach you the root cause of restless leg syndrome so that your legs - and your sleep - can finally find some peace. Cavities are still one of America's most common diseases – despite decades of fluoride use. Xlear is calling on the FDA to recognize xylitol as an active anticaries ingredient so dental professionals and patients can finally access this powerful tool. Xylitol, a safe and natural compound, has been proven to stop cavity- causing bacteria and dramatically reduce tooth decay. The American Dental Hygienist Association (ADHA) in conjunction with Xlear, a leader in hygiene products, filed a citizen petition with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) urging the FDA to formally recognize xylitol as an approved Over-the-Counter (OTC) active ingredient in dental hygiene products, including toothpaste, rinses, gels, mouthwashes, gums, and lozenges.Xylitol addresses the root cause of tooth decay. In contrast, fluoride strengthens tooth enamel. Fluoride has almost no effect on the bacteria that causes tooth decay. Studies have shown that xylitol has a higher “protection factor” in fighting cavities than fluoride.“Dental decay is the single most common communicable, chronic disease inflicting Americans today. Moreover, dental decay is also closely associated with driving other serious health risks - ranging from heart disease to diabetes,” said Trisha O'Hehir, MS, RDH.Key Facts:·         Nearly 90% of U.S. adults have experienced tooth decay.·         Studies show xylitol can reduce cavities by up to 80%.·         Xylitol works by neutralizing acid-producing bacteria and protecting enamel at the source.·         Xylitol is safe if swallowed, a key benefit for children.·         Widely used internationally, xylitol is already found in gum and oral hygiene products. The petition requests that FDA: Amend 21 C.F.R. Part 355 to list xylitol as an approved anti-caries active ingredient. Alternatively, issue a new OTC monograph under Section 505G of the FDCA.Learn more about the Petition hereXlear is one of the nation's leaders in effective xylitol hygiene products, available inpharmacies, big box stores, natural retailers and online.XLEAR's Retailers: Walgreens, CVS, Vitamin Shoppe, Target, Kroger, Sprouts, Natural Grocers and most natural products retailers nationwide.XLEAR's Online Retailers: Amazon, iHerb, Lucky Vitamin, and Vitacost.comLearn more at Xlear.com or SprySmile.com
