ADHA has been building its federal presence, and this spring marked a milestone: members on Capitol Hill for the profession's first formal lobby day in 20 years. President Lancette VanGuilder and Advocacy Advisory Committee Chair Alyssa Aberle sit down with Matt Crespin to break down what brought the Advocacy Advisory Committee, ADHA leadership and sponsoring organizations to Washington on April 16, with three specific asks spanning community water fluoridation, Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement for hygienists, and expanded FSA/HSA access for oral care products. They share what the reception was really like, why some offices had never met with a dental hygienist before, and what it felt like to walk through their own state's office doors and make the case for the profession. The follow-ups are already coming in. This is what showing up looks like.Guests: Alyssa Aberle, MBA, RDH, FADHA; Lancette VanGuilder, BS, RDH, PHEDH, CEAS, FADHAHost: Matt Crespin, MPH, RDH, FADHA

About This Episode: What does it really mean to hold a dental hygiene license? In this episode, Dave and Jessica sit down with Amanda Hill — speaker, consultant, award-winning author,to unpack what licensure truly represents for dental hygienists. This is not a conversation about paperwork and renewal fees. It is a candid, thought-provoking discussion about responsibility, public trust, and what it means to show up for your patients at the highest level of your profession.   What We Cover:   Why "access to care" can become "babysitting disease" in dentistry   A clarion call for dental hygienists to level up   Virginia's new dental laws: 120-hour assistants and foreign-trained dentists   Why dental hygiene should feel like a therapeutic massage and what that means for patient care   Why patients trust the letters on your scrubs and why licensure matters more than you think   The invisible protections your dental hygienist provides every single appointment   About Amanda Hill, BSDH, RDH, CDIPC Amanda Hill is an enthusiastic speaker, innovative consultant, and award-winning author with over 25 years of clinical dental hygiene experience. A follower left a comment asking if their 30 years of experience mean something. Sure, it means a lot...but it doesn't automatically mean you're current. I've been an RDH for 20 years. I know what it looks like when experience is the real thing, and I know what it looks like when someone has done the same thing on repeat for two decades and called it tenure. Both exist. Dentistry is full of both. In this episode, we dig into a real question from an experienced hygienist starting over at a new office, and we don't let either side off the hook. Because there are two very different versions of this story. Version one: you've kept up, you've grown, and you're walking into an office that's behind where you are. Version two: you've been doing the same thing for 30 years and calling it experience. In this episode: ▪️ How to tell the difference between expertise and habit ▪️ Why the interview isn't the time to pitch improvements, regardless of how right you are ▪️ How intentional questions help you vet a workplace before you're committed to it ▪️ What a team's response to new ideas tells you about the culture ▪️ Why trust has to come before change, even when the change is obvious ▪️ The question worth asking every time: "Is there anything here that would prevent me from growing?" The framework: Problem. Understand the consequences. Offer a solution. Experience is only an asset if it's actually current.   If you made it all the way down here, hit a like and share a comment.  Until next time, Peace out peeps! ✌️ _______________________________________

Host Matt Crespin sits down with Thalía Diedrick and Amaya Johnson to unpack the findings of GoTu's recently released 2026 State of Work Report, the largest survey of the U.S. dental workforce, developed in partnership with ADHA. The numbers are striking: 60% of hygienists report burnout, 53.8% received no raise in the last two years, and 41.4% receive zero benefits — and yet nearly 78% intend to stay in the profession long term. These issues lead to a retention crisis driven by resolvable issues, not a lack of committed professionals. Thalía and Amaya break down the three to five year cliff, why physical demand tops the burnout driver list, and why better benefits ranked above better pay as hygienists' number one desired change. They also dig into the rise of flexible and temporary work as a deliberate career strategy, the case for license portability, and what expanding scope could mean for underserved communities.Guests: Thalía Diedrick, Vice President of Marketing, GoTu; Amaya Johnson, Senior Manager of Provider Marketing, GoTuHost: Matt Crespin, MPH, RDH, FADHAEpisode sponsored by GoTu.

Periodontal disease affects one billion people worldwide with severe disease, and in the U.S., prevalence has risen 25 percent over the past three decades. So why isn't the needle moving? Matt sits down with Dr. JoAnn Gurenlian, ADHA's director of education, research and advocacy, and Dr. Ann Eshenaur Spolarich, assistant dean for research at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health at A.T. Still University, to dig into ADHA's new white paper on periodontal disease prevention. They cover the P4 care model, the evidence behind antiseptic mouth rinse, emerging diagnostic technologies, CDT coding for preventive services and what it really looks like to move from telling patients what to do to actually partnering with them in their care. This episode and its companion white paper were developed with support from LISTERINE.Guests: JoAnn Gurenlian, RDH, MS, PhD, AAFAAOM, FADHA and Ann Eshenaur Spolarich, RDH, PhD, FSCDHHost: Matt Crespin, MPH, RDH, FADHAADHA White Paper: https://www.adha.org/rinse-resource-center/white-paper-highlightsRinse Resource Center: https://www.adha.org/rinse-resource-center/ADHA Advocacy: https://www.adha.org/advocacy/

Got questions? Send Ericka a Text!Your medical insurance may be able to cover wisdom teeth extractions, and the reason most people never find out is painfully simple: nobody asks the right way. We sit down with Jen from Hygiene Unlocked and unpack a real, recent moment where a medical insurance rep insisted “that's dental” until Jen pushed for an actual code check. Once the CPT and diagnosis pairing was reviewed, the answer changed, and so did the entire cost picture. We get practical about dental medical billing: how to think in medical necessity instead of “dental vs medical”, how ICD-10 diagnosis codes tell the story that justifies treatment, and why cross-coding matters when an oral surgery plan only lists dental codes. We also talk about the everyday realities of calling payers, including how reps default to in-network benefits, how to confirm out-of-network coverage, and why you should always get a call reference number so you can appeal bad information later. The takeaway is bigger than wisdom teeth. When we treat the mouth like it's separate from the body, patients lose benefits they pay for and offices miss legitimate reimbursement. If you want a clearer, more defensible process for wisdom teeth extraction billing, CPT coding, ICD-10 documentation, and CMS-1500 claims, this conversation will change how you look at your next treatment plan. Subscribe, share this with a biller or office manager, and leave a review with your biggest medical billing question. Her story reinforces a steady truth for both dental hygiene students and early-career clinicians: your direction often becomes clear through patient care, not before it. One patient experience led her to build a niche serving an underserved population, reminding listeners that growth in clinical dental hygiene often starts with curiosity and a willingness to adapt. She also offers grounded insight into common challenges like finding patients in clinic, paying for dental hygiene school, and navigating workplace culture—emphasizing that the right office environment and continued education (like CE courses and conferences) can shape long-term satisfaction in the profession.Start here:Get dental hygiene school tips, free resources, and access to upcoming student events → https://dentalhygienebasics.mykajabi.com/newsletterWhen you're ready for boards:Join StudentRDH VIP → https://www.studentrdh.com/national-dental-hygiene-board-review-nbdhe-studentrdh-vip-club?utm_source=Referral%60&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=DHBasics&utm_content=DVIP3Want extra support + events?Get your free CloudU student membership (monthly events + giveaways) → http://clouddentistry.com/r/vxn1

Dental hygienists don't diagnose." It's one of the most persistent misconceptions in the profession, and it's wrong. Podcast host Matt Crespin sits down with the three co-authors of ADHA's newly released white paper "Dental Hygiene Diagnosis" (DHDx) to set the record straight. Darlene Swigart, Krista Beaty, and Toni McLeroy explain where this misconception came from, why the language we use shapes our professional identity, and how every hygienist is already making diagnostic decisions — from elevated blood pressure to food insecurity — whether they call it that or not. They walk through the Gurenlian and Swigart DHDx model, the case for standardizing terminology across education and state practice acts, and why CODA must reinstate DHDx explicitly into accreditation standards. Plus: how to start documenting dental hygiene diagnoses tomorrow morning, how AI fits into the diagnostic process, and why naming what we do is the first step to elevating the entire profession. RDH's...Are you taking BP at every visit?  In this episode of the Tooth or Dare Podcast, Irene and Victoria break down one of the most common questions in dental hygiene: “Is taking blood pressure at every visit mandatory?”   Patients often say: “I've never had this done before.”   So what do the guidelines actually say?   We discuss: Is blood pressure screening mandatory in Canada or the U.S.? What provincial and ADA guidelines recommend What to do when a reading is over 180/110 Can patients decline? When to defer treatment or refer Real clinical stories from practice The disconnect between dental and medical care   Clinical stories shared: - A patient with BP over 200 systolic who went to ER and was later medicated - A young patient with elevated BP who turned out to be pregnant with gestational diabetes - Patients dismissed to physicians - What happened when a patient was told by physicians, “We're not concerned and monitor.” - The disconnect between dental and medical frameworks   Blood pressure screening is strongly recommended — but in most places, not legally required. So, where does that leave us as preventive healthcare professionals?   We unpack it and discuss the following Resources & References: CDHO Hypertension Advisory https://cdho.org/advisories/hypertension/   CDHO Hypertension Factsheet https://cdho.org/factsheets/hypertension-in-adults/   American Dental Association – Hypertension https://www.ada.org/resources/ada-library/oral-health-topics/hypertension?utm_source=chatgpt.com   Today's RDH – Pre-Operative BP Screening https://www.todaysrdh.com/heart-health-importance-of-pre-operative-blood-pressure-screenings-in-the-dental-office/?utm_source=chatgpt.com   Peer-Reviewed Study (PMC) – BP Screening in Dental Settings https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7523566/?utm_source=chatgpt.com   If you're a hygienist, dentist, or healthcare provider navigating this conversation in your operatory — this episode is for you.   If you made it all the way down here, hit a like and share a comment.  Until next time, Peace out peeps! ✌️ _______________________________________
