A small interlude why I recover from a cold. ScriptCast season 3 is in full swing, with four interviews coming up in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, let's have a look at what's in store with the upcoming DevOne conference, taking place on April 11, 2019. Check out the website, check out the CfP and have fun listening to Donovan Brown from Microsoft! Donovan is Principal DevOps Manager at Microsoft, for the now called "Azure DevOps" team, formerly known as VSTS. In his talk you hear how Microsoft embarked on their own DevOps journey reducing a three-year release cycle down to three weeks. This required changes to their people, process and products. Donovan Brown from the League of Extraordinary Cloud DevOps Advocates will share insights into the agile transformation of Microsoft's Developer Division and showcase newest additions to Azure and how to use Visual Studio Team Services to deploy any language on any platform, including Windows, Linux, mobile and containers. Stefan met again with André Staltz, who is known for his excellent contributions to functional reactive programming. This time however, we go a more non-technical route, and chat about how we can build our own internet, and how other people are already doing it. We chat about personal LANs, the on-your-phone Facebook alternative, and many other challenges that we face when we want to put control back to our users. It's like the internet of the 90s, remastered, and exciting. Join us and don't forget to support André on Open Collective! Recording from Script'18 A typical interaction with a device or interface involves touching it. Either you're pressing buttons on a controller, swiping on a touchscreen or clicking on your laptop's trackpad. But what if you could control things without the use of your hands? What if you could use... your thoughts? I have been tinkering with a brain sensor and developed an open source JavaScript framework for it to allow me (or anyone else) to control interfaces or robots using facial expressions and mental commands. A recording from Script'18 (https://scriptconf.org) Next wave infrastructure - do far more with much less - Phil Hawksworth(https://twitter.com/philhawksworth) Recent years have seen a shift in technical architectures. Building complex services for the web used to be just that – complex. Projects might have demanded a broad range of specialist skills which could stretch even the fullest of full-stack developers. These days we have a growing number of options for how we design, build and maintain the systems which keep our web sites and applications alive. This talk will look at ways to make use of emerging tools and services which can deliver surprisingly rich features and capabilities without maintaining expensive and complex infrastructure. We’ll talk about the benefits in keeping your stack simple, in using the expertise of others, and we'll examine the performance and security benefits of JAMstack and microservices. A recording from Script'18 (https://scriptconf.org) Creating Augmented Reality Apps with Web Technology - Michaela Lehr (https://twitter.com/fischaelameer) If 2017 was the year of Virtual Reality, 2018 may become the year of Augmented Reality. With Apple's ARKit for iOS and Google's ARCore for Android, we should not forget that actually the open web and Augmented Reality are the perfect couple. But how do we create AR apps with web technology? In my talk you will learn how to write your own AR app that runs in the browser. You will see how Augmented Reality works, what markers are for, and how to create them. And you'll get an overview about the devices you can use to test your AR projects. We are just at the beginning of the rise of Augmented Reality. This is why lots of UX design questions are still unanswered. But there are patterns and best practises, and you will learn how to use them to get a great user experience in your AR application. We all remember the days when we had to spend hours and hours configuring and debugging web servers when all we wanted was to just code and test our app. Those days are long gone and it’s time for us to unlearn how to provision and manage infrastructure while focusing on building and scaling applications. A recording from Script'18 (https://scriptconf.org) The Journey to Full Time Open Source Working on open source has changed my life. I am self-employed and work on open source full-time. I don't have a boss. I only work on projects that I enjoy working on, and I can work whenever and wherever I want. I also let people use all the code I write for free. This is all made possible thanks to the amazing support from the community made up of the users of my open source projects. I think I'm incredibly lucky to be in this position today. Yet there are still many open source maintainers struggling on the verge of burnout while their software is being used by millions. So in this talk I will share with you my journey of open source - in particular how I made it my full-time job - in the hope of shedding some insights on open source sustainability. We had a little chat over tea and Club Mate and spoke about Mathias' career and life. How he started as a developer, came to Opera and ended up with Google's V8 team (https://twitter.com/v8js). We also spoke about regular expressions and recent advancements in that area. They are evolving, and Mathias is actively contributing to the standards. Reminder! Script'18 is happening. Check out the program at https://scriptconf.org and see speakers like Evan You, Marcy Sutton and Andre Staltz. I met with my buddy Daniel Khan (https://twitter.com/dkhan) for "Coffee", or a hoppy equivalent you have at around 5pm on a sunny afternoon. Daniel and I know each other for a long time, and somehow we ended up at the same company roughly the same month. Albeit in totally different teams, our paths keep crossing. Mostly because we share the same passion for Node.js. Daniel and I also share similar views in how we view our skills. And more importantly: The lack thereof. The Dunning-Kruger effect or the more friendly Socratic paradox helps us to lead a more humble and pragmatic way of doing things. We also chat about how we viewed the mysterious event loop wrong for way too long, and how understanding it helped us becoming a better Node.js developer (spoiler: it didn't). I was in Warsaw at Frontend-Con where I had the chance to meet Ruth John (https://twitter.com/Rumyra). Together with Karolina Wasielewska from Girls Gone Tech (http://www.girlsgonetech.pl) I did an interview about Ruth's passion: Audio/Video art on the web. We chat about the new APIs and the best way of using them. We also share stories about sound on the web gone right and wrong. Last, but not least, we learn more about live:js (http://livejs.network/, live audio/video shows based on web technologies. Ruth is joined by a bunch of web creatives like Martin (controls light via CSS), Tim (moving from Nerd Disco to Vision Lord), Sam (a musician and composer for live:js) and Matt (musician and creator of "Loop Drop"). Their next gig is a complete show at JSConf Budapest. If you are around, make sure to check it out. I had a lot of fun talking to Ruth and enjoying a good cup of tea together! In good Scriptcast tradition we went to a beer garden, had Käsekrainer with potato salad and the occasional Hefeweizen. Mostly to convince Peter that there are in fact good Hefeweizen. Of course we spoke about JavaScript, mostly on the server side this time. Peter's company is well known for their Node.js expertise and their consulting work, so we spoke about all things structuring, maintenance, leftpadding and "Hauptversionsnummernerhöhungsangst" (aka the fear of updating the major version number, it exists!)
