Mark Christie, who specialises in Dynamics 365 for Field Service at eBECS, uses Azure DevOps (formerly known as Visual Studio Team Services). He’s from Perth, the ancient capital of Scotland. On 25 January he’ll be celebrating Burns Night where the haggis is introduced to the table with bagpipes. Dynamics 365 Saturday Scotland runs on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 January, and its speakers will also be piped into the room. Azure DevOps combines planning tools such as backlogs and boards, with development tools like source control and testing with operations features to help you compile and deploy your applications. Neil is enjoying the forecasting feature of Azure DevOps which helps you see how long a project might take given a set of product backlog items and estimated team velocity. Mark enjoys building Azure DevOps dashboards and that although it’s a large suite, users can use a single app, like testing, within Azure DevOps without knowing the other parts of it. Azure DevOps is free for small project teams up to five users. Paid plans start at US$30 per month for 10 users to $750 per month for 100 users. Visual Studio subscribers are free. Microsoft partners can choose whether to provide their own instance of Azure DevOps and invite their customers to join, or whether to join their customer’s instance of Azure DevOps. When they recorded this episode, neither Mark nor Neil knew there was an on-premise option of Azure DevOps available. There is. It’s called Azure DevOps Server 2019 and it’s the successor to Team Foundation Server. Mark outlines how he manages his product back in Azure DevOps. Mark uses tasks to manage the work required to complete user stories in his backlog whereas Neil doesn’t. Mark also reveals a cunning track: using hashtags to label items even more quickly than using the label feature. Mark and Neil share the different statuses they use to track how items move across their Scrum boards. Mark’s co-worker, Richard Harding, gets credit for how Mark’s team are using the Azure DevOps wiki feature to help stakeholders learn how to use Dynamics 365’s features. Finally, if you think Scotsmen are famous for being frugal with their money, Mark will pay you £1.25 for a $1 note. Co-hosts, Neil and Dermot (yes, he's back!), discuss the sprint backlog. What is the sprint backlog and how does it relate to the product backlog? Who is responsible for the sprint backlog and who can change it? How the development team and the product owner negotiate the contents of the sprint backlog, with the help of the scrum master. The effect of swapping items out of the sprint backlog. How to handle capacity issues towards the end of the sprint when you’re ahead of or behind schedule. Using a ‘Definition of Ready’ to ensure that stories selected for the sprint backlog can be developed into working features within the sprint. Using velocity from recent sprints to forecast capacity for the upcoming sprint and how to adjust it for team members’ availability. The types of product backlog items that can go into your sprint backlog, and whether it’s useful to use tasks to track progress during a sprint. Should we separate out the business value delivered during the sprint from the velocity delivered during the sprint? Using a physical Scrum board or a digital Scrum board, such as Visual Studio Team Services, and benefits and drawbacks of each, and the challenge of keeping them in sync if you decide to use both. How to know when a product backlog item is complete at the end of the sprint, what to do if an item wasn’t finished, and why you should finish one item before starting another one.

The cloud is a term that's full of hype. We hear from various media outlets all the time: the cloud is the answer, the cloud is cheaper, the cloud is the way of the future, the cloud handles your DR, the cloud managers availability, and more. Microsoft has been pushing the message of "cloud-first" (and mobile-first), which has many SQL Server professionals confused, concerned, or  even angry. There are also plenty of professionals that dismiss the idea of cloud anything when it comes to data. I've felt similar emotions, and certainly I have been skeptical of the cloud versions of databases. I remember the first cloud service, a key-value store, which seemed woefully inadequate for most purposes. Since they I've seen the Azure SQL Database grow, and many other products get released. Across that time, I've become more and more impressed with what Microsoft has done, and as Visual Studio Team Services has expended, I've come to really embrace and get excited by the cloud. It's still not something I'd always recommend, but I would always start there. Read the rest of "The Cloud is Just a Tool"

Jake Ginnivan is a Senior Consultant at Readify. He's an open source enthusiast, blogger, speaker, microsoft MVP and a fan of good beer. He is a contributor to a number of open source projects including AutoMapper, Shouldly, NSubstitute, XBehave, DbUp and Funnelweb. The best way to get in touch with Jake is to flick him a tweet. Today I gave him a call to talk about his latest efforts on a project called GitVersion. GitVersion is an Easy Semantic Versioning solution for projects using Git. We started the conversation by taking a quick look at what Semantic Version. Jake is taking the lead on the next release of GitVersion. To give you some background. GitVersion has been on GitHub since August 2013. Since then it's had 22 releases with 54 contributors and it's used by the team NServiceBus and Octopus Deploy. I got to using GitVersion on a project this week and I found it interesting to see how many different ways it can be used for different solutions. GitVersion works on many levels. It can assess your commit messages, tags and branches. It gathers up all that data and creates a useful version number. Depending on your configuration it will then include that version number in your solution. GitVersion is useful for whatever pipeline you've got going on. Whether it be Team City, Visual Studio Team Services, Chef, Puppet, Octopus Deploy. It's going to work because at the end of the day it can be encapsulated into a single simple to use command line tool that can be plugged in whereever you like. GitVersion is a tool that will help your project remain semver compliant. Thinking about what this means and how this sort of standardisation can help your project continue to evolve whilst others depend upon it got me thinking... Spending some time exploring semver has got me thinking about transitive dependencies and how this sort of idea is often at the core of backlog management, grooming and prioritisation. Perhaps semver could be a useful tool early in the scrum cadence. Perhaps the idea of semver could be useful for versioning many things, not just released packages of code.
