Over the past ten years, Chris Bach has been at the forefront of the transformation of web development. Chris coined the term "Jamstack," which refers to one of the first conceptions of a composable web architecture (the acronym JAM accounts for the JavaScript, APIs, and markdown that make up a simple decoupled web system). He also founded Netlify, a company that supports these new architectures and which now serves tens of millions of customers. https://ellessmedia.com/csi/chris-bach/

Today we have Brian Rinaldi from LaunchDarkly on the show. This is the final episode of our in person coverage at the SHIFT Conference in Miami. And although Brian works at LaunchDarkly, we actually didn't talk at all about his employer and instead chatted about Jamstack. Brian has a long history with Jamstack, has written a lot about it. Jamstack was popularized and created by Netlify. And there's been a lot of history of controversy with the term. Some people think of it's merely a branding ploy or a marketing thing, and others find it simply confusing because we have terms like LAMP stack, MEAN stack and MERN stack. So Jamstack automatically gets lumped in with those, but it's not actually a technology stack. It's an architectural pattern. Recently, Jamstack has been giving away to what is known as composable frontends and we picked Brian's brain on this and what this means not only for Jamstack, but also the future web development.

There is a lot of talk about headless, composable, MACH, and the like these days. And I can say from personal experience that there are many instances where they are the perfect fit. But, as with any technology solution, it's not always a one-size-fits-all. Sometimes headless isn't the right fit, or a more nuanced approach is needed. Today we're going to talk about this as well as how low-code or no-code solutions can help teams make the most of their website redesign. To help me discuss this topic, I'd like to welcome Liz Spranzani, Chief Technology Officer, EVP of Technology at Verndale. In this episode, we speak with Matt Biilmann, CEO of Netlify. We discuss what it was like deploying code before Netlify, whether there is about to be a fragmentation in the JavaScript ecosystem as React gets more opinionated, where state and data fit into the Jamstack model, and how you might reach developers with a new project today. You'll hear about the evolution of Netlify's model, the Gatsby acquisition, and how Netlify has succeeded at staying on top of the fast-changing landscape.Hosted by David Mytton (Console) and Jean Yang (Akita Software).Things mentioned:ReactShopifyJavaGatsbyNext.jsWordPressSolidJSPlanetScaleNeonRuby on RailsAstroMastodonNostrMacBook ABOUT MATT BIILMANNMatt Biilmann is the CEO and Co-Founder of Netlify, a cloud platform that helps people build, deploy, and operate websites, web applications, and web stores swiftly and with ease. He has a long history of building DevTools, content management systems, and web infrastructure. Matt has been an active participant in open source and contributed to many well-known projects, including Ruby on Rails, JRuby, and Mongoid. Since launching its private beta back in March 2015, Netlify is now used by 3.5 million developers and is one of the fastest-growing web development platforms in the world.Highlights:Matt Biilmann: I really believed that we would move away from that model and move to a model where we would decouple the actual web experience layer into its own layer that web teams can build and deploy independently, and hopefully much faster. But I also saw at the time that there wasn't any tooling or infrastructure or workflows around that. So early on, when we started Netlify, there wasn't even a name for this web building. We had to come up with the term “Jamstack” to describe this idea of building the web experience layer on its own and typically seeing the backend split into all these different APIs and services, like all the headless CMSs that's really become mainstream now.— [0:03:58 - 0:04:39] Matt Biilmann: Right now, what we're seeing happening around generative AI is probably going to change a lot of how we interface with computers over time, right? It's already almost at the edge where you can imagine stitching a few tools together, and you would be having this kind of conversation with a program, rather than with a human. I think as that starts to happen, that will start to massively redefine how we consume content and commerce and so on. It will probably change a lot of what it means to build a website.— [0:17:09 - 0:17:41] Let us know what you think on Twitter:https://twitter.com/consoledotdevhttps://twitter.com/davidmyttonOr by email: hello@console.devAbout ConsoleConsole is the place developers go to find the best tools. Welcome to season 5 of the award-winning .NET Core Podcast! Check that link for proof. Hello everyone and welcome to The .NET Core Podcast is a podcast where we reach into the core of the .NET technology stack and, with the help of the .NET community, present you with the information that you need in order to grok the many moving parts of one of the biggest cross-platform, multi-application frameworks on the planet. I am your host, Jamie "GaProgMan" Taylor. In this episode, I talked with Dave Glick about Statiq which is a static site generator - although calling it static site generator, as we'll see, is quite reductive. We also talk about the JAM Stack, static sites, and how most websites don't actually need something like ASP .NET Core or WordPress generating pages at request time. We also talk about a very small selection of some of the things that you can use Statiq to generate - why not check it out today? Along the way, Dave dispels some of the common misconceptions of statically generated vs completely dynamically generated websites (i.e. pages generated ahead of time vs pages generated at request time), and I talk about how the website for the show is generated ahead of time, and some of the benefits that the community of listeners get from that. This is a conversation that both Dave and I could have kept going with for hours, but we've agreed to come back to it another day in order to explore further. With all these no code options, do you find your clients are becoming experts and no longer needing you? We try (and fail) to talk about this today and end up going on about JAMStack instead! It's a serious point though. Page Builders and Gutenberg have opened up the website creation process to a whole new audience, and it brings into question what we do as WordPress web developers / builders that make us worthwhile. What can you say to the client to make you seem like value for money in a time when 'affordability' is more important than ever, and when many of the tasks that used to be 'out of scope' for non-technical users, is not possible in an easy-to-use interface? Go listen...
