Today on the BYOB Podcast, I'll be reading a paper that I wrote in November 2014 which details how standardized tests have impacted the African American Community. The heated discussion over requiring students to pass standardized tests has been up for debate for decades. On one hand, many people believe that standardized tests are an advancement to the next level of education. Proponents like myself argue that standardized tests are widening the academic achievement gap for African Americans. This is a MUST listen. Although she no longer has primary custody of Rowland and Gavin Keith, Amber uses her relationship with her children as the fuel to her fire. One Mother, One Mission A Note From The Author "Dear Rowland and Gavin-Keith offers a rare glimpse of my monumental milestones, my triumphs, and my struggles to navigate through life without Rowland and Gavin-Keith. I hope that every life I touch, will be encouraged to find strength in all of my weaknesses. Join me on this journey, and learn how I walked the path of peace during this raging storm."
"I Missed the Deadline" is a poem that I did literally begging the cops to stop killing us. It details my experience with having the police called to my hotel room on 9/12/2021. It was one of the most horrific events of my life and I channeled the experience through poetry. I didn't have much words other than these spoken words. The experience was painful and antagonizing, and I never want to live through it again. I can still feel the tears and the panic attack that I had in their presence. I never thought that I would have to thank a cop for not killing me, but I beat the charge and walked away and finished my poem for @girltalk.me poetry slam contest. Listen now! This day was HARD. I chose my hard. I walked away from police, laid on the sidewalk and prayed and cried. I fasted my way out, and thank God I am still alive today.
The black author expo has been moved to a virtual location to reach more viewers! I am inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting for our Virtual Black Authors Book Expo, and I look forward to connecting with you. This will work much better for us all. Thank you to those who were willingly going to travel from Ohio Alabama Florida and more to little ol' Douglas. Why I chose to go virtual: When I thought about how far Douglas, GA is from the area that Kendrick Johnson was murdered, I discovered that it's better to go online anyway. I thought of all the unresolved murders and the way that I stood on the corner with the confederate flag, or how I would walk to class in Georgia across from the KKK! So here's to making reading cool again all around the world!
