Every day, monks chant the morning prayer (chōhai) in the Naoraiden (Ceremony Hall) and the public is welcome to observe. This recording was made on 13 December, 2024 and captures part of the prayer. In this episode, Taisha Nurse, Senior Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at McDermott, explains the power of understanding your catalytic nature and then developing the skills and persistence to drive change in some of the most challenging change initiatives that intersect with people's identity. Having persistence allows us to navigate the impatience we can feel about the change not happening as fast as we want. Persistence requires us troubleshooting the cultural implications of change all the way down to the individual buy-in. Original music by Lynz Floren.

Every family has a story of why a language or customs may have stopped being passed down to the next generation. And there are those who feel compelled to reignite that connection. In the story of our guest today, Carmen Blanco a social justice advocate, we'll hear about a Nicaraguan father's wishes for his daughter to thrive in a new land with the language that would help her the best. And how now she is at a point in her life to finally learn the language left behind and make it stick. Every parent wants to keep their child safe. Some families' eradication of a language or cultural practices evolves from a deep desire to ensure the safety of their loved ones. In today's episode, we'll talk to Chloe Bostian, a visual effects artist and food blogger, who feared as a young child that Spanish was not something to speak out loud (unless you were angry) and you don't talk about Cuba. We'll see how she's unpacking all those feelings and finding ways to connect to her Cuban heritage, sin miedo, without fear. Making sure you're understood and can communicate with those you love is super important. And if your parents come from different cultures, speaking different languages, it can make communication with the extended family difficult. It's one of the reasons why today's guest, Lydia Villalba a seventh-grade English teacher, had a pause put on learning Spanish at home. Now she's working to reclaim that lost language so she can advocate for her students and cross that bridge to more fluent communication with her Paraguayan familia. Today Tommy D is joined in The Attic by Taina Sanin, who's the Programs Director of Nonprofit New York. We will discuss how Nonprofit New York Educates, Advocates & Networks on behalf of its 1700+ Nonprofit members.Tune in for this sensible conversation at TalkRadio.nyc or watch the Facebook Livestream by clicking here.Show NotesSegment 1Tommy introduces himself and the show and gives some insight about Philanthropy in Phocus - from the attic. Tommy then introduces Taina Sanin and her Non-Profit, and welcomes her to the show. Tommy asks Taina what pulled her to the nonprofit sector - Taina explains that it all began when her family immigrated to the United States of America from Haiti, and her mother had a dream where she saw Taina helping people. Taina said she has always wanted to give back in some way, and she struggled as an immigrant to have a need to be successful, but that world was not her life. According to Taina the only thing that separates the nonprofit sector from the for profit sector is; the individuals working for the nonprofit are trying to get investors to invest in missions and causes rather than a product.Segment 2After some playful banter the two get back into it - Taina gives an introduction to “Nonprofit New York” the company that Taina has worked tirelessly with - Nonprofit New York works to unify the nonprofits of New York, they have managed to serve 42,000 non-profit organizations in the last two years. The company knew what the nonprofit organizations deserved and have really advocated for the sector. Nonprofit New York has been around for over 30 years and the people of the organization strongly believe that healthy nonprofits are much more equipped to focus on their various missions and services. The company built itself off advocacy and continued on to grow - people wanted more out of the organization, such as training and knowledge. The biggest challenges the organization has faced is growth - as they bring on more partners, more companies, more employees their ‘need' increases and therefore the company needs more support and funding to function and attain that growth.Segment 3Nonprofit organizations cover about 5 percent of all New York City businesses according to Tommy. Taisha talks about how Nonprofit New York helps other nonprofit organizations, by providing them opportunities of training and giving them various tools, resources and knowledge to help them with their various problems and hurdles. Nonprofit New York's goal is to strengthen the various nonprofit organizations, they specialize in helping in strengthening the various management positions in the nonprofit organizational structure. Taina talks about the various trends you see in her company's work, by truly strengthening best practices at the various levels of the organization's structure. Taina mentions that this year specifically the company is focusing on the work on equity - specifically racial equity - and the best practices in nonprofits relating to equity.Segment 4Taina takes it away by talking about how for small organizations it can be expensive to get the resources to strengthen their professional work community and that's why many nonprofit organizations struggle because they can't access those tools. This is where Nonprofit New York comes in, they specialize in providing them those tools at an affordable cost. The new membership campaign launched by Nonprofit New York to provide support to nonprofits that are bipoc (Black, Indigenous, People of Color)running organizations and provide them a two year membership. This means that the organization and everyone in it has unlimited access to the tools and resources - provided by Nonprofit New York - needed for an extended period of time. This would give them access to 77 labs, training, resources and tools - and Tommy has pledged to help 10 businesses for two years. Tommy introduces ‘Always Freyday' and says goodbye.

Marni and Chris Gillis unpack the latest episode of the Bachelorette. The new Bachelorette, Tayshia, is a breath of fresh air on the dating scene. She is playfully collecting evidence about all the guys and having a great time in the process. During this episode, Marni points out what Tayshia is doing right and how some of the guys are missing the mark. Key takeaways from this episode: How to voice a concern to someone you are dating How to data date to gather information The answer to the question ‘Why are you still single?’ What dating with dignity looks like The New Bachelorette Dates with Dignity [1:05] Marni and Chris express how great it is to see Tayshia, the new Bachelorette, work through the dating process with dignity. Marni points out that she doesn't get overly invested in, or attached to any one particular guy and she seems genuinely interested in finding out who is her best value match. The key to Tayshia’s winning dating protocol is that she gives all the guys an equal chance. If she notices chemistry growing with a guy she plays and flirts but is still committed to finding matching values. She is data dating. Past Bachelorettes have mistaken lust for love and lust. Marni shares a big coaching tip, “Ladies when someone asks you how are you still single, tell your story. Say you are selective, and about the time you spent time building a career or traveling.” Then finish with, ‘but now I am ready'. Chris reminds us not to worry about where you are in your life or if you have found someone or not. Guys understand because many of them are single too. Should You Ask Someone to Change Their Look?[8:49] During the episode, Tayshia asks Noah to shave off his facial hair, aka The ‘stache. Marni asks Chris if it is acceptable to ask someone to change the way they look when dating. Chris doesn't think it’s OK to ask someone to change. He says if a woman really wants a change she should find a way to reward a guy if he changes his look without making it an ultimatum. Taisha asks Noah “I wonder what your face would look like without that mustache?” Dating Den Facebook Group Discussion Point: Marni asks “Do you think 'smokeshow' is a derogatory term?” Go to the FB page to share your thoughts. How to Bring Up Concerns Without the Drama [20:57] One of the guys, Ed, wants to share something with Tayshia about one of the other guys. He is sincere when he tells her but it could be construed that he is talking behind the other guy’s back. Did Ed handle it the best way possible? Chris says he wouldn't want to hear it forcefully, or blurted out, especially if it is a delicate situation. He recommends bringing up feedback like you would like to hear it yourself. If you have a similar situation or can relate to the issue, be honest, and open about what it is and share your concerns. Chris says, if a guy is into you, he will go into hero mode to make sure the situation is rectified. Marni recalls the Gottman Group's Gentle Startup technique. Many women say they want more. They say they are meant for more. They say that they've put their lives on hold for others. However, when given the time and opportunity to do what they say they want, they fold. Why? Limiting beliefs can halt progress and prevent you from designing and living your next phase. If you visualize what you want and know where you want to go, then you can address what's holding you back. But, you need to know how these limiting beliefs were instilled, address them and release them before progress can be realized. Spring 2017: NK went to a panel at the California African-American Museum in Los Angeles. The dancer Taisha Pagget was in conversation with the curator Erin Christovale, and Taisha told Erin how her ballet training had institutionalized the natural rhythm out of her. Which made NK think about her own experiences in a graduate writing program — how her writing developed a double consciousness, and how she started going to parties in a cheap blonde wig and hot pink lipstick, a costume which she eventually called WHITE DRAG. This is her experience of literary passing. Original writing by Nicole Kelly. Produced by Elyssa Dudley. Bitchface is written, hosted, recorded, and produced by Nicole Kelly & Phoebe Unter.
EPISODE 15: Last week, we talked about crowdfunding as a way to raise money for your business ideas. So, we thought it would be useful to talk to someone who is doing just that and to share her process with you. In this episode, we interview Taisha Dent, a social worker who is passionate about preparing today’s youth for life, both personally and professionally. Her organization, Help Emotion World, develops video games to teach youth the value of workforce skills and emotional skills. We get a chance to hear about her process and see what it takes to develop an idea and prepare it for launch. In the future, we plan to check back in with Taisha to see how it went. Enjoy! You can contact Taisha directly at mailto:helpemotionworld@gmail.com.
