Although he owned the Arctic Cat, he had been convinced to ride an Eskimo snowmobile and it may have been the only time an Eskimo sled crossed the Big Mac.

For more information please visit the links below www.UPPAA.org www.UPNotable.com www.amazon.com/Face-Rock-Grand-Island-Chippewa/dp/0520215672 LOREN R. GRAHAM was a distinguished American historian of science whose research illuminated the intricate relationships among science, technology, philosophy, and society—particularly within Russia and the Soviet Union. As a professor emeritus at both MIT and Harvard University, he was widely admired for his deep understanding of how cultural and political contexts shaped scientific ideas and institutions. Over his long and influential career, Graham authored numerous acclaimed books, including Science in Russia and the Soviet Union, Lysenko's Ghost, and Lonely Ideas, each exploring the ethical and social dimensions of scientific progress. His work bridged disciplines and continents, earning him international recognition as one of the foremost scholars of the history of science and the moral responsibilities of scientific inquiry. cover of the book Eight miles long and four miles wide, Grand Island lies off the south shore of Lake Superior. It was once home to a sizable community of Chippewa Indians who lived in harmony with the land and with each other. Their tragic demise began early in the nineteenth century when their fellow tribesmen from the mainland goaded them into waging war against rival Sioux. The war party was decimated; only one young brave, Powers of the Air, lived to tell the story that celebrated the heroism of his band and formed the basis of the legend that survives today. Powers of the Air lived to witness the desecration of Grand Island by the fur and logging industries, the Christianization of the tribe, and the near total loss of the Chippewa language, history, and culture. Graham charts the plight of the Chippewa as white culture steadily encroaches, forcing the native people off the island and dispersing their community on the mainland. The story ends with happier events of the past two decades, including the protection of Grand Island within the National Forest system, and the resurgence of Chippewa culture.

When the world feels heavy, choosing joy can sound naïve. We think it's the most practical move you can make. In this heartfelt episode, we share how a brutal “year of authenticity” led to a bold decision to claim a “year of joy,” and why that choice reshaped daily life. You'll hear a reading from Small Pearl's Big Wisdom titled We Will Have Joy, then we unpack how gratitude and delight fade without tending, and how to bring them back through simple, repeatable practices. We explore joy as medicine for the soul: the counterweight that steadies your nervous system and expands your perspective during hard seasons. From dance rehearsals that dissolve stress in minutes to tiny present-moment miracles like a dog napping belly-up, we show how nothing outside needs to change for your inner state to shift. Joy doesn't erase facts; it equips you to meet them with more compassion, creativity, and clarity. You'll learn how to set morning intentions, close your day with a quick “what was joyful” check, and use movement, nature, and mindful naming to anchor goodness in real time. This conversation is for anyone who feels stretched thin yet wants a grounded way back to aliveness. We make the case that joy is not a reward for finishing the hard work; it's the fuel that makes the hard work possible. Walk away with practical tools to cultivate joy now, not “someday,” and a gentle nudge to claim even a few drops on the toughest days. SCHULTZ grew up in the beautiful Upper Peninsula, where she was the middle of 6 children in her family. In a neighborhood full of kids, there was always someone to spend time with outdoors. After marrying, raising children, and working outside of the home, she retired and found the time to write and paint (almost) as much as she would like to. She is a self-taught artist and author of children's books. Her nature-inspired children's books gave her the outlet to write and illustrate the wonderful area in which we live. The beauty of the Upper Peninsula and Northern Wisconsin, with its abundant wildlife, wooded areas, and multiple lakes and rivers, has always been an inspiration for her work. Winter is her time of year to create my artwork, with the summers spent outdoors as much as possible. It is her fondest hope that readers will enjoy her work and that it will inspire them to create their own.

Phil has just returned from a week Northern Ireland - a place where he worked during ‘the Troubles'. It prompted him to think about the peace process there, today's fashionable support for the pro-IRA (and allegedly pro Hezbollah) band called Kneecap, and why history tends to be kind to extremists. Then Sam Kelly joins from America to discuss his fantastic, often scandalous and sometimes very funny book on why drugs explain all human history. It's a little tongue in cheek but it reveals so many terrific new angles on some of the most celebrated figures of all time - from Alexander the Great through George Washington to Queen Victoria!Sam's book is available here...https://www.amazon.co.uk/Human-Histor...Several Australia listeners have asked for a full list of where Phil is speaking there in October. To thine own self be true: Sharon Brous has let this advice illuminate her path to becoming a rabbi. She was raised with a strong social, but not religious, Jewish identity. The more she studied and admired the humanity in the sages' writings, the more Brous felt her voice was silenced simply because she is a woman. Today, as an ordained rabbi, Brous's decades of hands-on pastoral care in Los Angeles has cleared “a path to become myself.” Her book, The Amen Effect—and how to get it—is embraced by seekers of every stripe and urges us to seek human connection in an increasingly isolated and divided world.
For this month's #LiteraryAnything episode we're sharing our author talk with Paul Flavel in conversation with Georgina McGuinness, where together they discussed Paul's book 'John Martin's: The Story of South Australia's Beloved Department Store'. The passing of the years has not dulled SA's loved for 'Johnnies', with thousands of people working there and even more loyally shopping there. It was amazing to see so many people join us for this author talk who still had very fond memories of the store.

https://nancykricorian.net/In vivid, poetic prose Nancy Kricorian's THE BURNING HEART OF THE WORLD tells the story of a Beirut Armenian family before, during, and after the Lebanese Civil War. Returning to the fabular tone of ZABELLE, her popular first novel, Kricorian conjures up the lost worlds and intergenerational traumas that haunt a family in permanent exile. Leavened with humor and imbued with the timelessness of a folktale, THE BURNING HEART OF THE WORLD is a sweeping saga that takes readers on an epic journey from the mountains of Cilicia to contemporary New York City.“Like colorful miniatures—from a childhood of elders haunted by the Armenian genocide, to girlhood and adolescence amidst war in Beirut, to marriage and children in New York at the time of 9/11—Nancy Kricorian finds just the right scale to bring her heroine's passage to vivid, reverberating life.” —Aram Saroyan“An arrestingly beautiful novel of how families draw us together, but also push us apart. Set amidst the backdrop of displacement and war, THE BURNING HEART OF THE WORLD illuminates how we carry history deep into even the most forgotten corners of ourselves. Once you start reading about Vera and her family you won't be able to put this book down.” —Marie Myung-Ok Lee, Author of The Evening Hero
