The Open Mat is proud to present our new groundbreaking venture, “Women Wrestle 2” a wrestling podcast hosted by women that focuses on all aspects of women’s wrestling. For far too long, women’s wrestling has not received the attention that it deserves and this is a huge step in the promotion and exposure of the world’s greatest sport. With the advent of this podcast, girls, women and fans of women’s wrestling will have an outlet to learn more about our athletes, their successes and struggles, as well as the lives of our elite competitors outside of the wrestling room. “Women Wrestle 2” is weekly podcast that will be hosted by recent McKendree University graduate Alexis Porter. Alexis was a four-time All-American at the WCWA level, a three-time Junior National Champion in Fargo, a Junior World bronze medalist and an active competitor on the Senior level. Alexis will be joined by her co-host Arian Carpio, a two-time Cadet Pan-American medalist and 2019 U23 World Team member, who is also training to compete in the 2020 Olympics. Our hosts, Alexis and Arian, will preview and recap notable women’s wrestling events, feature prominent guests in the women’s wrestling community and discuss other timely topics that are relevant and important to girls and women in our sport. Women’s wrestling is one of the fastest growing sports at all levels. Earlier this year, the Committee on Women’s Athletics recommended emerging sport status for women’s wrestling to all three levels of the NCAA. In 2018-19 10 collegiate teams fielded women’s wrestling teams for the first time, with 14 others set to take the mat for the first time in 2019-20. This includes DI, DII, DIII, NAIA, and NJCAA schools. Estimates from 2018 are that almost 17,000 high school girls participated in the sport which is a number that has increased every year since 1994. Last year seven states sanctioned an official girls high school state tournament for the first time. Five others have pledged to do the same in 2019-20, which will bring the grand total of states with a high school state tournament up to 18. The Open Mat is a nationally-respected independent news resource for college, high school and international wrestling.
