ParentingAces - The Junior Tennis and College Tennis Podcast
Welcome to Season 14 Episode 38 of the ParentingAces Podcast! In this week's episode, Lisa is joined by Sam Parfitt, former top junior and collegiate player and the founder/CEO of The True Athlete Project (TAP).TAP has pioneered a holistic mindfulness-based approach that unleashes sport's potential to change lives across diverse contexts. They believe sport can play a powerful role in building a happier, healthier, more compassionate world. But too often, sport fails to live up to its potential, driven by a win-at-all-costs culture that dehumanizes people and leads to dropout, burnout, bullying, and disastrous mental health outcomes. TAP wants sport to be joyful and freeing, and to bring people together. They have become leaders in how to change the culture of sport, working with national and international governing bodies, community sports centers, schools, colleges, coaches, athletes, referees, and parents.Sam Parfitt holds an MSc in Sport Policy, Management and International Development from the University of Edinburgh, where he then became an associate tutor. His dissertation focused on the role of sport coaches as social change-makers. He is a certified mindfulness teacher and a USPTA professional tennis coach with experience coaching all ages and standards - from total beginners to internationally-ranked juniors. While Sam suffered with poor health during his time in the US, Sam endeavored to use his experiences in sport - both positive and negative - to help others. His academic work centered around sport and identity, and he became intimately involved in establishing projects which used sport as an agent for social change. He worked extensively within the context of sport for at-risk Hispanic youths and won multiple awards for his efforts, including the 2012 UTC and City of Chattanooga public service award and the Coleman Lew & Associates Leadership Award. After working within an NCAA Division I athletics department, he was appointed director of athletics at Saint Peter's School - an independent K through 5th school in Chattanooga, Tennessee. There, he had the chance to create his own athletics program around a set of ideals that would help the children enjoy a positive start to their sporting careers. The program included a novel parkour program, sports poetry, mindfulness, and brought the school into the news for his inclusive and innovative approach to the holistic training of young athletes.During his time at St.Peter's School, Sam was also an NCAA Division I women's tennis coach, helping to take the Mocs to their best record for over twenty years.Sam has also worked with the Mastercard Scholars Foundation and advises several NGOs. He has delivered mindfulness to Olympians and Paralympians across over thirty sports. If you're interested in learning more about The True Athlete Project, visit their website at https://www.thetrueathleteproject.org. John Levy is a behavioral scientist specializing in trust, leadership, and human connection. He's the author of the New York Times bestseller You're Invited and his latest book Team Intelligence: How Brilliant Leaders Unlock Collective Genius. Over the last fifteen years, John has helped thousands of leaders—from Nobel laureates to Olympians—understand how to create meaningful relationships, build trust faster, and foster cultures where teams thrive together. On this episode we talk about: Why relationships and trust are the ultimate currency in business and life The psychology of connection and why small acts build deep trust How to avoid manipulation while using behavioral science for good The difference between status and likability—and why likability always wins long-term How emotionally intelligent teams unlock “collective genius” and outperform talent alone Top 3 Takeaways Trust isn't gained by giving—it's built when others invest effort in you. True connection comes from benevolent intent, not manipulation—use psychology to serve, not to scheme. High-performing teams succeed not because they have the smartest people, but because they have the most emotionally intelligent dynamics. Notable Quotes “We can't buy relationships. The real question is—how do we get people to invest effort into us?” “If I told people how I designed my events, would they feel manipulated or cared for? That's the test.” “The reason we follow someone is simple—they make us believe tomorrow will be better than today.” Connect with John Levy: Website: https://www.jonlevy.com/ ✖️✖️✖️✖️

“Good enough is neither good nor enough.”What do you learn from a man who's gone from being a fitness trainer… to leading billion-dollar companies like P&G, Coca-Cola, and Fine Hygienic Holding?James Michael Lafferty has lived a life of constant reinvention — coaching Olympians, building high-performing teams across five continents, and proving again and again that humility and grit beat pedigree every time.In this riveting and extremely authentic conversation, Jim shares hard-earned lessons on leadership, risk-taking, and living a life that matters.Highlights from this episode:•“Staying humble and being a bit naive was my biggest advantage.”•“Good enough is neither good nor enough.”•“Success is never owned. It's rented. And the rent is due every day.”•“Everyone said you can't get women leaders in the Middle East. In 90 days we went from 0% to 30% women on the management board.”From surviving a major heart attack to reshaping global companies, Jim proves that the real difference between a winner and a champion is consistency, dedication, and the courage to reinvent yourself when life demands it.

On Prophecy Radio episode #142, Karen and Kristen dissect the latest Percy Jackson and the Olympians news, plus the release of The Court of the Dead by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro. They also discuss The Red Pyramid chapters 37 and 38, including their favorite moments and what they think will happen next. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air every other week. All discussions are PG-13. News and Updates (00:10:37) The Court of the Dead by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro is officially out in the world! Did you get any of the special editions? (We definitely did.) Did you see the pictures and videos of Rick signing books and Funkos? Leah turned 16 last month! Do these Percy Jackson and the Olympians behind-the-scenes clips mean we'll be getting another BTS documentary?? We go through a slightly older Entertainment Weekly article to discuss the next Senior Year Adventures book. When can we expect the third and final Senior Year book to come out? Rick is strictly a middle grade author, and we're cool with that. What other gods would make for good series fodder a la Trials of Apollo? Other character-centric books are still on the table, and boy do we want them! The Red Pyramid discussion (00:29:14) All right, let's refresh our brains on what happened last time. Good. Now we can jump into The Red Pyramid chapter 37. Why does Set keep flickering between forms? We've really come around on Amos since we learned the truth. Set is SO sassy, and we're kind of here for it. Horus still wants to take over Carter's body, and Carter is still telling him no. Uh, where the heck is Nephthys? Sadie protecc. Thank goodness Carter figures out what Zia meant when she told him not to resist. Carter turns into a total badass! Favorite lines and favorite scenes. All right, time to jump into The Red Pyramid chapter 38. Carter having fun fighting and beating up on Set is slightly concerning. Why do they BOTH bleed black? They're about to bring down the house, so Carter tricks Set into becoming a fruit bat and then drags him outside the pyramid. Will Sadie be able to free their dad from the throne and his sarcophagus? We kind of already knew how to defeat Set, but he really lays it out for Carter. Did we feel bad about what happened to Desjardins? We totally did not expect Set to put the capstone on top of the pyramid. Sadie is a freaking rainbow, y'all! What name could Sadie have shouted? We wanted to read the next chapter SO BAD! But we discuss our favorite lines and favorite moments instead. Feedback (01:09:31) Ensign_Davies and Maria write in to tell us what they think of The Court of the Dead. Caoimhe is super excited about Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, and she let's us know one of our previous episodes was missing links. That's all fixed now! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 143, where we'll discuss The Red Pyramid chapters 39 and 40, as well as get you up to date on more Percy Jackson and Rick Riordan news. This episode's hosts are: Karen and Kristen Each episode, Prophecy Radio‘s hosts will discuss any official news coming out of Camp Half-Blood before doing a chapter by chapter reread of Percy Jackson or one of Rick Riordan's other series. What terrifying trials did Jason and the Argonauts have to overcome to win the famous Golden Fleece from a fire-breathing dragon, in one of the greatest greek myths of all time? When and where does this thrilling story come from? How does it tie together the tales of Odysseus, Orpheus, Achilles and Circe? Is there any historical evidence for the story of Jason and the Argonauts? What are the origins of Medea, the beautiful but vindictive sorceress who Jason marries? Did the Greeks still worship the Olympian gods in the more skeptical Hellenistic age? How did the coming of Alexander the Great transform the Greeks' understanding of the divine? And, were the Olympian gods really once mortal kings and queens of an earlier age, or were they planets..? Join Tom and Dominic as they conclude their epic journey into the glorious heart of Greek mythology, as they explore their evolution in an increasingly skeptical Hellenistic world, and answer the question; why did the Greek myths endure and captivate audiences throughout history, in a way that no other culture's mythology did? WORKING ON YOUR PERSONAL BRAND? DON'T DO IT ALONE
After nearly 400 conversations with Olympians, Paralympians, and trailblazing women athletes from 55 countries, one thing is clear: no two stories are alike. Some athletes train with world-class facilities, others without basic equipment. Some are household names, others are fighting for visibility in sports you've never even seen on TV. And yet, across all these differences, certain themes echo again and again. That's what this new Best Of series is all about—spotlighting both the range of experiences and the threads that connect them. We've pulled together the most powerful moments across years of conversations, including:✨ Best Advice to Younger Selves — from “give yourself grace to be a beginner” to “don't dim your light for anyone.” ✨ Best Stories of Resilience — tales of athletes coming back from devastating injuries, near-misses, and moments when the world doubted them most. ✨ Best Moments of Role Modelship — athletes lifting the next generation, mentoring teammates, and carrying entire communities with them to the world stage. ✨ Best Stories of Identity & Joy — how athletes embrace who they are on and off the field, from glitter on the track to pride in their heritage. and many more! You'll hear voices as different as the sports they represent, yet together, they reveal what it really takes to rise to the top. This isn't just one story. It's hundreds woven together. And this is just the beginning. In this episode we explore how elite women athletes define who they are in the face of pressure, expectation, and change. You'll hear Afghan taekwondo champion Marzia Hamidi confront what it meant to lose, and reclaim, her identity when the Taliban banned women from sport. Fran Brown, British Paralympic cyclist, pushes back on “inspiration porn” to assert her professionalism and agency. Asia Hogan-Rochester, Olympic silver medalist with Canada Rugby Sevens, celebrates individuality, glitter, mismatched cleats and all, as fuel for confidence. And Catarina Guimarães (Team USA) shows that power and femininity aren't opposites, reminding young girls they can love bows and sparkle and still be absolute beasts on the field. Together, these stories reveal identity as both a fight and a freedom, something you own, protect, and proudly bring to the world.Flame Bearers is a women's sports storytelling studio, illuminating the unsung stories of exceptional women athletes from around the world. Kate Mihevc Edwards used to run for no particular reason, except that she loved it. Then, she discovered the world of competitive running in college and ran numerous half marathons and 13 marathons -- three of which were Boston. On her son's first birthday, she went for a run, like always. As she returned home, her heart rate skyrocketed to 300 bpm. She was later diagnosed with a rare heart condition that sidelined any hope of returning to running.Meanwhile, she left her career in marketing and studied to be a physical therapist and board-certified orthopedic specialist who practices running medicine. She has over 15+ years of experience working with high performers, CEOs, runners and athletes of all levels, from recreational athletes to Olympians. She is the founder of Precision Performance Running Medicine Clinic in Atlanta, GA, the RUNsource app and co-host of the Interdisciplinary Case MIles Podcast. Kelly shares the legendary farewell memo that GQ Editor-in-Chief Jim Nelson sent to his staff when Andy Ward left for Random House in 2009. This is workplace appreciation turned up to eleven—a memo so effusive, so unabashedly emotional and so beautifully over-the-top that it became the stuff of publishing legend. Through Nelson's tribute to Andy's "Olympian generosity of spirit" and "Andy Ward-ness," we get a glimpse into what it looks like when someone's professional impact is so profound that ordinary words simply won't do. What if time wasn't fixed, but something you could stretch, compress, and reframe? In this episode of Leveraging Thought Leadership, host Bill Sherman sits down with John Coyle—Olympian, design thinking expert, and author of "Design for Strengths". John has spent his life chasing the meaning of time, from hundredths of a second on the ice to decades in thought leadership. His work asks us to reconsider not just how much time we have, but how we experience it. John shares how fleeting moments can reset the trajectory of our lives—an insight that came from his Olympic journey where fractions of a second separate gold from "first loser". He explains the Greek distinction between Chronos (clock time) and Kairos (human, transformative time) and why organizations and leaders need to design for the moments that truly matter. We explore John's unique career path—from competing alongside Lance Armstrong and working with Enron to translating neuroscience and psychology into practical lessons on leadership, innovation, and resilience. Along the way, he reveals how flow state, storytelling, and emotional engagement can make time slow down and make ideas stick. You'll also hear John's most powerful Kairos moment—the story of a silver medal, a boy who became an Olympian, and how one act of kindness changed two lives forever. It's a reminder that you never know when a small choice can alter someone's future. This conversation challenges leaders to rethink their relationship with time, memory, and meaning. It's not about adding years to your life—it's about adding more life to your years. Three Key Takeaways: • Moments reset the future. Leadership pivots often come from brief Kairos moments that redefine direction more than years of steady effort. • Memories are the currency of time. Flow states, risk, and storytelling create lasting memories that make life feel longer and leadership more impactful. • Design for strengths, not weaknesses. Leaders unlock innovation and resilience when they focus on amplifying strengths instead of patching flaws. If you found value in today's conversation about designing time, flow, and moments that move you forward, you'll want to listen to Maximizing the Flow of Ideas for Your Organization with guests Jeremy Utley and Perry Klebahn. That episode digs into how leaders generate more ideas over time—and why volume, variety, and experimentation are just as important as insight or vision. Both episodes ask a powerful question: how do you create an environment where your best ideas don't just happen—but compound? In short, if you want tools for turning strengths into breakthroughs, and moments into momentum—this is your next listen. It'll help you scale creativity, lead from possibility, and expand what “thought leadership” can mean across your team or organization.

On Episode 42 of Mindful Warrior Radio, we welcome Gary Hall Jr.—a three-time Olympian, ten-time Olympic medalist, and one of the most iconic figures in the history of U.S. swimming. Known for his electric speed, bold personality, and trailblazing spirit, Gary brought showmanship and passion to the world stage, forever changing the culture of the sport.Beyond his achievements in the pool, Gary is also a powerful advocate for health and resilience. After being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes just one year before the 2000 Olympics, he defied expectations and returned to win multiple gold medals—becoming a beacon of hope for athletes and individuals living with chronic illness.Today, Gary continues to inspire as a speaker, mentor, and champion for wellness and performance, encouraging others to push past limits and lead with authenticity. In this powerful conversation, Gary gives us a window into navigating competitive environments, challenging traditional systems, and embracing his own unique way of being and doing. On his unconventional approach to training, Gary is proud of his novel contributions to what has now become the new standard. “You seemed completely off your rocker if you weren't going to try to do 20,000 meters a day. Like, you could never be good if you didn't do that volume of training. If you had suggested what some top-level swimmers are doing now—training three times a week, 1,500 meters—it would have sounded crazy. It's interesting to see how the sport has grown, and I'm happy to have been a brick in the wall of the evolution in the sport.”On artistry versus science in swimming, Gary says he's “always felt like an artist in a math class. You could oversimplify it to right brain vs. left brain—I was a creative type. I didn't care about the formula. I tried the formula, the scientific method approach, and I was miserable. I hated it. I hated the sport. I wanted to quit. And it wasn't until I started just tuning into wavelengths underwater—the way the water moves, feeling that, and learning how to channel and move through the element of water—that it was so much more interesting. That's more art than science. And I always felt like the artist could win.”About the advantages of being a right-brain thinker, Gary notes, “The people that need that structure also may be apprehensive of art, but they also don't handle chaos well. And we know in this life; there's chaos and there are agents of chaos. If you are rigid, if you are inflexible in your mind and how you accept and process chaos when it arises (you struggle). And so, I think that being able to pivot quickly, that was an advantage in the art department, not the science department.”To learn more about Mindful Warrior and Mindful Warrior Radio, follow us on Instagram @therealmindfulwarrior and visit www.mindfulwarrior.com.

In this episode — My Identity (Part 1) — we explore who athletes are beyond medals and headlines. Two-time Olympic champion Caster Semenya says “take me as I am” and challenges narrow ideas of womanhood in sport. Three-time Olympian Shannon Rowbury opens up about the identity shift after stepping away from competition, how she “meditates through movement,” and the power of running community (including her time supporting the San Francisco State team). Claire Taggart, a boccia athlete from Northern Ireland competing for the United Kingdom, reflects on being multifaceted — a woman and a disabled elite athlete — and on boccia's post-Tokyo move to gendered events giving women new space to shine. This is identity in motion: honest, layered, and unapologetically real.Flame Bearers is a women's sports storytelling studio, illuminating the unsung stories of exceptional women athletes from around the world. We discuss her revolutionary recovery-focused training, battles with bulimia, and why she still can't turn off the competitive switch at 58. Most surprising? The swimming world's indifference to her game-changing methods. Dara redefined athletic longevity. This conversation unpacks how. Enjoy! What separates champions from quitters? It's not talent—it's mindset. In this high-impact episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Sana speaks with Coach Sandy Cohen, a dynamic mindset coach, speaker, and author of the 99 Rules series. Sandy breaks down what it really means to train the "muscle between your ears," offering powerful insights into belief, grit, focus, and emotional control. Whether you're an athlete, parent, coach, or someone navigating pressure in everyday life, this conversation will reframe how you see performance and personal growth. From managing burnout to reshaping parental support in sports, this is a raw, practical guide to building a winning mindset. About the Guest:Coach Sandy Cohen is a high-energy mindset coach and speaker who has worked with thousands—from young kids to Olympians. He's the author of 99 Rules Every Athlete Needs to Know and 99 Rules Every Sports Parent Needs to Know, offering straightforward, no-fluff strategies to build character through sport. Sandy's mission is simple: sports are the vehicle, but character is the destination. Key Takeaways: Mindset isn't fluff—it's foundational. Sandy defines mindset through what he calls “The Big 7”: belief, attitude, grit, focus, emotional control, discipline, and self-awareness. Confidence is not the root; belief is. Without belief, confidence and performance crumble. Athletes and parents often focus too much on outcomes. The real win lies in mastering actions and behaviors. Parents have a massive role—not as second coaches, but as steady supporters who know when not to intervene. Burnout happens when athletes ignore recovery and emotional health. Grit isn't about pushing blindly—it's about knowing when to pause and reset. In this powerful episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, guest host Sana speaks with Lyubim Kogan—five-time Olympian, 9/11 survivor, founder of Wings4Heroes, and a man who has quite literally walked back into fire. From Wall Street to war zones, Lubim opens up about the mental cost of mission-driven work, surviving burnout, and why he still chooses to keep going when most would turn away. He shares how protecting his "silent hour" helps him align with his inner compass, and why real resilience is about resting without guilt. This conversation is a masterclass in legacy, sacrifice, and staying mentally grounded under pressure. About the Guest:Lyubim Kogan is a first-generation immigrant, Olympic athlete, former Wall Street executive, and the founder of Wings4Heroes, a nonprofit that empowers amputee veterans through paragliding. His life embodies mental discipline, compassion, and purpose-driven service across continents. Key Takeaways: Burnout is real—even for high performers—and recovery requires intention, not guilt. True resilience means knowing when to stop, rest, and reconnect with yourself. Constant action can be a form of avoidance. Silence reveals true direction. Real impact starts when you follow your inner compass, not just societal definitions of success. Legacy is not about accumulation, but contribution.
