Teachhoops.com WintheSeason.com In this episode of Coach Unplugged, host Steve Collins discusses building a successful coaching staff with co-host Coach Barker. Steve begins by thanking sponsors Doctor Dish and teachhoops.com, emphasizing their contributions to the basketball community. The main topic revolves around the qualities needed in assistant coaches. Steve outlines three essential roles: the "energizer bunny" who handles administrative tasks, the "Yoda" who has deep basketball knowledge, and the "Nelly" who challenges decisions and avoids being a yes-man. He stresses the importance of assistants providing diverse perspectives and skills to complement the head coach's strengths and weaknesses. Coach Barker adds that new coaches should prioritize assistants with whom they have strong relationships and trust over purely technical knowledge. He also highlights the importance of having a diverse coaching staff, including younger coaches and those who can handle specific tasks like parent communication or film analysis. Barker also mentions the benefit of having someone on staff who is present in the school to handle day-to-day issues and maintain player relationships. They both agree that a well-rounded coaching staff is critical for a program's success, with each member bringing unique strengths. Trust, respect, and the ability to work well together are crucial factors when selecting assistant coaches. The episode concludes with Steve and Barker reflecting on the importance of enjoying the company of one's coaching staff, especially during challenging times. On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Shotgun Spratling and new intern Riley Sager are back in studio to discuss everything happening in the world of USC football, from recruiting to what all 12 assistant football coaches had to say this week at the media brunch. Our team starts off talking about the nearly unbelievable turnaround for USC football recruiting, both from the high school ranks and the NCAA Transfer Portal. Over the past five days the Trojans have picked up as many commits, four from high school and one from the portal. Things got started on Wednesday with three-star receiver Roderick Tezeno, Thursday USC added five-star offensive tackle Keenyi Pepe, Friday was four-star corner Elbert Hill, Saturday three-star receiver Luc Weaver before UCF transfer cornerback Chasen Johnson picked USC on Sunday. Lincoln Riley and his crew have the No. 1 ranked recruiting class for 2026 and it isn't close, with 27 commitments and nearly 295 points (Notre Dame is second with 14 commits and 236 points). The efforts to focus on high school recruiting by new general manager Chad Bowden is paying off and the Trojans are not slowing down on the recruiting trail. On the team side, we were able to meet with 12 assistants on Wednesday at USC's media brunch, two hours of interviews that we filmed and uploaded to our YouTube page. We were able to gain a lot of insight into what the plan is for the off-season to turn things around on the field in 2025. Shotgun also spent the morning at the Under Armour Next Camp in Mission Viejo and shares his thoughts on how the Trojan commitments and targets performed, including defensive line MVP Simote Katoanga out of Santa Margarita (Calif.) and offensive line MVP Chase Deniz out of San Diego (Calif.) Unlimited situations don't create creativity as much as limitations do." - Bob Thurnhoffer (18:05) “(Training in a Hallway) I can do acceleration, I could do plyometrics. I can get very strong in the weight room. And try to learn how to be truly great at these things that I can do. Because I knew that the things I could do I had to be better than everyone else at” - Bob Thurnhoffer (29:38) “I still work general training a very, very large degree. Probably more than most coaches even. Yeah, I remember Brooke, the pole vault coach at Louisville. She said to me at the start of the year how she really liked how much general strength I do. She's like, yeah, I don't know. Coaches never do that anymore” - Bob Thurnhoffer (41:00) “Interestingly enough, I actually, at New Mexico I almost entirely went to Monday, Tuesday neural, Wednesday, Thursday general, Friday neural. The whole two years I was there for everyone. And it worked great” - Bob Thurnhoffer (47:30) “I almost always finish a neural lift with med ball throws; to restore proprioception after heavy lifting” - Bob Thurnhoffer (49:13) "I think like long jump you gotta, it's all about displacement, smoothness, being a passenger, letting the natural inherent reactivity that you've developed in training and it's inherent in the human body do the jumping for you." - Bob Thurnhoffer (1:02:01) "It's the quick ground contact time with the vertical displacement. That's what I'm looking for." - Bob Thurnhoffer About Bob Thurnhoffer Bob Thurnhoffer is an accomplished track and field coach specializing in jumps, currently serving as the Assistant Coach for Jumps at the University of Louisville. He joined the Cardinals' coaching staff on July 31, 2023, bringing with him over 18 years of Division I coaching experience across multiple instit...
In episode #299, we welcome upcoming presenter at this June's TCS Live, Grizzlys Wolfsburg Head Coach Mike Stewart. At the time of this recording, he is currently preparing for his fifth season leading the Grizzlys. He has a unique origin story as a player that includes his mother discovering a loophole that would enable him to enroll at Michigan State University, without a high school diploma, and leading to being drafted in the first round by the New York Rangers. Following his retirement due to injury, he would immediately jump behind the bench as an Assistant Coach with Villacher SV of the Austrian ICE Hockey League. Now 15 seasons later, Mike has spent the bulk of his coaching career in the DEL. He remains a student of the game, and is engaged with the challenge of leading the Grizzlys, a smaller market club in a league with no salary cap, to DEL title. Listen he shares why the best coaches are the best thieves, why passing is a lost art, and why North America should adopt Olympic-sized rinks
