DISCLAIMER: This episode contains a large amount of Japanese and even some Chinese words. Make sure to watch the video on Youtube for a glossary and subtitles! https://youtu.be/gva1MN3F4oQ In this episode of the KoreKara Podcast, we interview Emily, a half-Japanese and half-Taiwanese student at Keio University. She grew up speaking and going to school in three languages, which means she's essentially native level at all of them. Although Emily grew up in Taiwan, she ended up going to college in Japan, where she faced new challenges fitting in culturally. Emily shares her story of how she learned three languages growing up, her experience going to college in Japan, and her stories of Japan's working and drinking culture. About Emily: Emily grew up in Taiwan, with her dad being Taiwanese and her mom being Japanese. She went to a Taiwanese elementary school, then a bilingual school, then finally an International School. Because of these environments growing up, she is native level at reading and writing in three different languages, which gives her a unique position of being a polyglot. She also speaks Taiwanese as well as French. Initially when Emily joined the International school in Taiwan, she faced difficulties getting up to par, but was able to reach a high level after 4 years in an all English environment. She ended up only applying to colleges in Japan, after finding a school that perfectly fit her unique personality. At Keio University, she was able to fit in and meet many interesting people, such as someone who enjoyed eating bugs, or other people that didn't care about the cultural norm within Japan. Initially, Emily joined the Volleyball Club in an effort to meet more Japanese people, but due to the difficulties she faced in fitting in and conforming, she ended up leaving the club. Emily shares her experiences of working part-time at Mr. Donuts, where she learned the importance of being punctual within Japanese society. She ended up being late for a couple minutes on the first day, and after being reprimanded, she ended up oversleeping for 3 hours the very next day. Lastly, Emily shares her future outlook on searching for a job within Japan, even though she knows that it might be a bit more difficult for her to fit into a Japanese company. She shares stories of working over-time and stories of deciding not to conform to Japanese societal pressures. Follow Emily on Instagram: @onopoop

Get your controversial red Starbucks cups, dump out the PSL, and fill it up with wine as we delve into the history, science and fun facts about java, joe, dirt, mud, wakey juice, morning jolt or C8H10NN4O2!   This episode's wine: Veijo Feo 2012 Carménère from Baeza Family Cellars in ChileThis episode's cheese: Tallegio James was especially excited about this topic, but not as excited as some fanatics. It's hard to believe there are people out there crazier than James, who grinds his own beans and uses a French press.   We also question if we're actually old enough to drink coffee. James gives us some of the theories about its origin, in addition to a tour of coffee throughout the ages, from the penguins of Yemen to the Incest commercial in 2009.   And, despite being ubiquitous in the '90s, as well as featured in "Friends," "Seinfeld" and "Frasier," coffeehouses were even more popular in 17th century Europe and were the hotbeds for news, philosophy and revolutions.   And, even though we recorded this episode before the red cup "controversy" became the big news this week, we still made sure Starbucks and the Pumpkin Spice Latte were mentioned ... along with some grumbles from Emily. And, if you listen to Good Job, Brain!, one of our favorite trivia podcasts, you would already know the two-tailed mermaid on the coffee cup is called a Melusine.   James somehow holds himself back from his usual rant about how our consumer-driven lives are the worst thing to happen to humanity. But, he doesn't hold back when it comes to criticizing 1950s commercials, in which wives are chastised by their husbands for making bad coffee.   And, for those who like reading too much into the acting in commercials, James walks us through the questionable incestuous relationship depicted in this 2009 Folgers commercial.   We don't want you to think all we talk about on this podcast is incest, even though we mentioned it before in our Cheers to Back to the Future episode. But it's weird how it keeps coming up. (Although Emily doesn't remember much about that episode -- Thanks, Chambong!)   But, just remember these parting words from James: "Not all coffee is incestuous."Go ahead, Tweet that quote so others wonder what you're listning to!Special Thanks   Special thanks to Adam Centamore for his book, "Tasting Wine & Cheese," which we used for this episode and we'll be using for our wine and cheese pairings for the next few episodes!   Listen/subscribe/leave a review on iTunes, Stitcher, Spreaker, Overcast. Listener Feedback. This week on Sharp & Hot, Emily Peterson addresses feedback and future changes she plans on making to her show. Don’t worry! Sharp & Hot will still have it’s same old friendly tone, but the format is going to be a little different. After going over some of the feedback that her viewers sent her, she reviewed the novel “The Cake Therapist” by Judith Fertig, and also questioned what it even means to assign a book the genre “contemporary women’s fiction”. Although Emily does not think that she fits the audience that this book was trying to reach, she still recommends it! “If you feel like your beloved Sharp & Hot is changing, it’s for the better.” [16:00] “I’m trying to imagine exactly who she is talking to, because I don’t feel like it is exactly me.” [22:00] “If you want a beach read, this is right in the beach read category.” [23:00] –Emily Peterson on Sharp & Hot

Recovery from addiction is a particularly challenging process for women, who are also mothers, to go through. Emily Lynn Paulson, author of the book, Highlight Real: Finding Honesty and Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life, is our guest for today's show. She shares the story of her addiction and her journey along the path of the process of recovery and healing. Emily lives in Seattle and she's is the mother of five children. She has been sober for three years now, and she is a certified, professional recovery coach. Emily used to dislike herself a lot. She had difficulty with being honest, both with herself and with others. From a very young age, she used to tell white lies to cover up the things she didn't like about herself and to make up for the things she thought she lacked. Episode Link>> www.theaddictedmind.com/80 ( http://www.theaddictedmind.com/80 ) When Emily started drinking, it helped her to cover up, and make up, for the things she didn't like about herself or that she thought she lacked. The first time she ever drank alcohol, she realized that it affected her differently to the way it affected her peers. Rather than just having fun, when she drank, she felt that she was finally the person she was always meant to be. This theme wove its way into different areas of her life and followed her until she found recovery. When she was younger, it was hard for Emily to make the connection between alcohol and her problem because back then it was still relatively easy for her to hide things from other people. Bad things didn't happen every time she drank but every time something bad happened, she had been drinking. At college, her problem was easy to hide because everyone was drinking all the time and her behavior didn't appear to be any different from that of anyone else. As an adult, Emily had five children and she didn't drink while she was pregnant. So she continued denying her problem for quite some time until the consequences of her drinking finally started outweighing what she thought she was getting out of it. Emily didn't believe she was an alcoholic at first because she thought she could stop drinking. She made several attempts to stop but she always started again. Deep down, she knew that she had a problem but she was not willing to let it go forever. That is alcoholic-thinking, and it is very common. Eventually, it got to the point where Emily could no longer deny her alcoholism. All the dishonesty, secrecy, and lies of omission can make addiction a soul-crushing condition. Other people are often not fully aware of what is going on, so they don't step in and offer to help. Although Emily came to realize that dishonesty didn't work, it was still very hard for her to become fully honest. She found that coming out with her sobriety, and also writing her book, helped her to make the connection and become truthful about who she was, and about the things she still needed to deal with. She knew that she could not start afresh without first dealing with everything that had come before. It's very easy to give a false impression of what is going on in our lives with social media. And many people fall into the social media "comparison-trap". Having to confront her kids with her alcoholism was the most difficult part of recovery for Emily but it was also her biggest blessing because it brought about some very necessary conversations. Alcohol is not something that women have to do to survive their kids. For Emily, her book is an important message to women, telling them how necessary it is, to tell the truth to other women about what alcohol does to mothers. Since Emily started putting her sobriety first, she has been able to be there for her family in a way that she has never known before. Her life has become so much better. She's not perfect now, but her best day when she was drinking was always way worse than her worst day, sober. *Links and resources:* Emily's website - www.emilylynnpaulson.com ( http://www.emilylynnpaulson.com/ ) Emily on Instagram - @highlight real recovery You can find Emily's book on Amazon ( https://amzn.to/2MuEhPJ )
