Emily Agnew is the founder of SustainablySensitive.com, where she supports sensitive people through Focusing and Inner-Bonding practices. She is also a professional musician having auditioned and performed at the highest level. One of the characteristics on Elaine Aron's HSP self-test says, "When I must compete or be observed while performing a task, I become so nervous or shaky that I do much worse than I would otherwise." Emily and I both relate to this within our experiences as musicians. For Emily auditions have created difficult to manage adrenaline spikes, and for me I have experienced it in live performance settings. Even when I'm not overly nervous, the release of stress hormones can lead to physiological reactions that make performing difficult. In this week's Extended Play episode I talk about specific examples of times when I've become so shaky that it's been impossible for me to play my instrument. And I share some of my own trial and error practices that have worked for me over the years. You might be wondering what this image has to do with this week's episode. To be honest it didn't come out as I hoped - it was supposed to our inner selves and the anxiety that comes when the wrong characters occupy inappropriate places in the car. Except, they both look like they're having fun. Maybe it has a meaning that I'm not yet aware of. That's why I'm not changing it...well, that and the fact that I can't be bothered to re-do it! In our conversation Emily and I talk about: How performance anxiety and overwhelm can impact us in highly stimulating environments How to develop practices that root sustainable energy in everyday life, and keep us grounded in an intense spike situation (such as an audition or performance) Psycho-physical reactions to stress and what I might be telling myself when I get sore throats before gigging Inner Relationship Focussing - how Emily helps clients to create inner space for healthy self-awareness and engagement How the tiny traumas of everyday life leaves hermetically sealed fragments of our 'selves' steering the vehicle of our lives, like ghosts stuck in a state of limbo How focussing our inner relationship helps get the different 'selves' in the right position to drive life more sustainably Why sensitive people might struggle to speak clearly to the needs underneath the emotions they feel so deeply The importance of working with someone else who can help us ask ourselves the right questions and discover answers beyond our default thought patterns Links Mentioned in the Episode: SustainablySensitive.com Focusing.org focusingresources.com breath-body-mind.org SerenityIsland.me

Bridging the Burnout Gap with Emily Thompson

Emily Thompson's experience starting the Being Boss podcast in 2015 is a strong argument for why you should always plan for success. She and her “business bestie” Kathleen Shannon started the podcast as a way of taking the conversations they were having about their businesses and being entrepreneurs into the public realm—and if they happened to promote their respective branding agency and web design shop in the meantime, well then, hey: that's a bonus! But a few months in and they were already getting ads. A little while later, they casually launched getaway events like the Being Boss Vacation and signed a book deal. The podcast was taking on a life of its own. Emily was already a successful web designer: she had gotten her start with her Etsy store, having fallen in love with the idea of selling handmade things online. It was during this time that she became “enamored with branding,” and diving deep into who she was serving and why they should care about her business. Eventually, she took her expertise and passion to other business people. She graduated from offering pointers on online banners to running Indie Shopography, her web design agency for more than a decade. So when it came time to launch Being Boss, it was a bit of a lark. “We had no business plan. We were just starting a podcast.” Emily and Kathleen went through the usual steps they'd take with any client—from the name, branding, website, and content buckets—but initially, they didn't plan to monetize their passion project. Their sudden success may sound amazing, but Emily cautions that it was “actually overwhelming.” The two of them experimented with a lot of different business tactics when they were building up the podcast, looking to see “what would stick.” Things weren't always easy-breezy: their foray into Facebook Ads was a colossal failure, so bad they didn't even do their customary postmortem. (Emily files aspects of their experiments under “what worked, what kind of worked, what didn't work,” taking lessons from each. “It's how we iterate and do the work we need to do to make the next time we do it even better.”)And then: burnout struck. Emily says that the rush of opportunities on the podcast side, plus some setbacks in her personal life and other business, led to a feeling of burnout. For Emily, burnout felt like “Ew.” She found herself getting angry and listless when it came to work topics. “I was very much not myself.” “For a while, we thought we were going to shut Being Boss down. We were both so tired.” She set a date, and promised herself that if her homebrew remedies didn't work by then, she'd get a therapist (and she did); she learned to recognize the way she felt leading up to a depressive episode (“a very deep tiredness”), and she shifted her priorities, giving herself more time. But the major solution for Emily wasn't to walk away—it was to invest more deeply. While her co-host and partner Kathleen wasn't ready to leave her day job, Emily wanted to go all-in. “Our solution for mutual burnout wasn't the same solution.” Almanac Supply Co. started in 2018 because she found her podcast convos were starting to verge on the meta. “It didn't sit well for me to show up as someone who knows business, but the only business I'm running is this podcast.” She thought back to her time as a web designer; she always “really envied” the folks who were working on product businesses. Pivoting to something nature-focused, hands-on and family-oriented—she even makes the candles with her partner—gives her a sense of purpose, and offering beautiful handmade items brings her back to her Etsy days, albeit with a major glow-up. “I get to show up and be the CEO.”ResourcesTo learn more about our guest, go to https://beingboss.club/aboutTo learn more about FreshBooks and take advantage of an offer exclusive to our podcast listeners, go to freshbooks.com/podcast Follow us on social @freshbooks, and remember to subscribe to get the latest episodes as soon as they become available!

This week's episode of The Waves considers whether there is a uniquely feminist way to divorce your skeevy rich husband. Slate executive producer of podcasts, Alicia Montgomery, and business journalist and co-host of Slate Money, Emily Peck, delve into the stories of two billionaire women who have both recently ended their marriages—Melinda French Gates and MacKenzie Scott.  The two discuss whether French Gates and Scott bear any responsibility for the sins of their ex-husbands companies. They talk about the extent to which each woman worked to rehabilitate their partner's image during their marriage, including unpacking French Gates' obsession with telling the story of how she convinced her husband to drive their daughter to school (some of the time, at least).  Alicia and Emily also talk about whether there's an expectation, just because they are women, that Scott and French Gates use the billions of dollars their husbands have amassed to better the world. And finally, they talk about how Gen Xers were taught to think about marriage and happy endings, and what we've learned about fairy tales.  In Slate Plus, Alicia and Emily talk about their gateways into feminism. For Alicia, it was a 1980's romantic comedy from across the pond. For Emily, it was learning about what a hellscape maternity leave policies can be. Recommendations Fun fact: Emily is very interested in cults. If you want a deep dive into the Heaven's Gate cult from the 1970s, she recommends the Pineapple Media podcast, Heaven's Gate. Did you develop a bad habit during the pandemic? Alicia recommends kicking those habits we adopted to stay sane during lockdown. She'll be slowly cancelling all the streaming services she subscribed to because there are only so many times you can watch The Crown. (Probably.) “I'm so far away from the life I was supposed to have.” Just one of the beautiful and profound statements Emily Getz makes in our open and frank conversations about her experience moving through secondary pregnancy loss and infertility. She stopped me in my tracks with this statement because I believe it's a familiar refrain for so many of us (whether consciously or unconsciously); this belief that we should be somewhere other than right where we are. In Emily's case, this idea she was missing out on the life she was supposed to have related to building her family. But of course, we can think this way about other aspect of our lives too, like our work, social or financial status, the quality of our relationships, or even our spiritual development. And when this belief is active within us, it can really suck all the fun and enjoyment out of the here and now, as Emily so beautifully illustrates through a story about her son Ryder. We cover a lot of ground in this episode, but the overarching message is the need to let go of the life you thought you were supposed to have so you can have (and enjoy) the life meant for you. Letting go of beliefs, thoughts and things that aren't true to who we are, is essentially what healing allows us to do. And when we are willing to move through this painful and often scary process of healing, what awaits us on the other side is often unexpected (but super cool!) and always in alignment with the truth of who we are. For Emily, one of those unexpected outcomes is the creation of her new podcast. Day 1 aims to normalize the experience of pregnancy loss and infertility - particularly here in Canada where for the most part, the conversation has yet to penetrate the mainstream - through interviews with experts and people with lived experience of infertility. By carving out space for these important conversations, Emily hopes to create an amazing, positive loop: a better educated public who can respond more effectively to people experiencing infertility, who will then feel more understood by the people around them and be more likely to share their experience which will continue to educate the public ... An amazing positive loop, indeed. To connect with Emily directly and subscribe to her podcast, follow her on Instagram @_day1podcast. I reached Emily at her home in Toronto.

On this episode of the TWLOHA Podcast, we’re exploring the theme of normalizing mental health professionals both giving and receiving help. Counselors, therapists, psychologists—they’re often a saving grace for many. They provide wisdom and guidance and a safe space for us to lay bare our struggles. But beneath the titles, the offices, the knowledge, and the compassion, mental health professionals are also people. And we believe all people can benefit from things like counseling—but sometimes counselors are faced with a shameful stigma that says they shouldn’t need assistance with the hardships they’re trained to decipher and handle. So today, joining host Chad Moses to discuss and dismantle this hypocritical and hurtful stigma, are LMHC Stephan Monteserín and Dr. Emily Burch.    Stephan Monteserín is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor currently located in his hometown of Orlando, Florida. He’s a valued TWLOHA Board Member and he works to help people grow into freedom from oppressive patterns of thought and behavior. As a counselor, Stephan’s goal is to assist those hurting as they pass through their struggles and acknowledge their pain.    In 2020, Dr. Emily Burch completed her doctorate in clinical psychology whilst working in an inpatient mental health facility. Her experience stems from a variety of clinical environments, including a community mental health center, a local corrections facility, and an equine-assisted therapy program. Along with her professional mental health experiences, Emily is a writer, whose words you can find on the TWLOHA Blog. PODCAST EPISODE 18: Emily Forrest Mikschi from Embodybee, wandering the East Coast of Australia There is a quote from Eve Byers' short documentary, BEEing Kept, where Emily Forrest Mikschi says “I don't really think you could call me a beekeeper because I feel as though it's the bees that are keeping me.” What a thought, one to stir over slowly, one that conjures the complexity of the relationship between humans and bees and begs us to think about the depths of that connection. Emily Forrest Mikschi is an enigma. On paper, she is the genius behind her business Embodybee – she educates children and adults alike, keeps bees, sells bee products, safely rehomes, and runs creative bee-oriented workshops. However, she is much more. A sensual soul, a sexual being, with a spiritual connection to bees unlike anyone I have met in the past. Indeed, I am always thrilled to introduce you to each and every one of the guests on the BEES WITH BEN podcast, but this week I am especially excited, as Emily brings a perspective to the table that is raw, ancient, loving, bodily and simultaneously of this world and not – her relationship to bees is one that stimulates all the senses and dips into a kind of consciousness that requires a special kind of intuitive connection to the natural world. Emily told me of an erotic dream she once had, with bees and a snake. As some of you may know, symbolic meaning has been attributed to natural objects and beings since ancient times, and bees too have their own connection to the spiritual realm. Accessing the depths of consciousness often requires a strong understanding of the body, and how it relates to the earth, time and space. With these things in mind (and they are not small ideas), we might be able to shed some light on Emily's unique perspective. For Emily, beekeeping is much more than a way to procure honey, or even a way to help the planet; for her, bees are sacred beings, connected intrinsically to love and worship. With this in mind, Emily has made it her life's mission to “re-sacralise the bee”, or, make it a scared being once again. Invested in a kind of mutual relationship with bees – a sort of sensual and spiritual love affair – Emily approaches bees from a position of love and respect, and hopes that this approach is adopted more widely, so that all forms of apiary centre on symbiosis – a mutual and beneficial relationship between humans and, as Emily calls them, “sun beings”. Make sure you tune in to listen to Emily and I wander through the depths of her sacred, spiritual and sensual practice that is far more than just beekeeping. We chat about Emily's vision, her business Embodybee, spirituality, and getting naked and honey-dipped with the bees themselves. Tempted? We will talk about her rise to Head of Operations, how they keep a massive community growing and so much more.Too Long; Didn't ListenWhen it comes to metrics, of course, you have your typical indicators which are visitors, new community members, etc but there are more metrics that paint a better story of how healthy the community is. For Emily, that's interactions which for Product Hunt are upvotes, hunting products, chatting in discussions and setting goals in their maker groups.Emily started as a consultant and through her community work was promoted to Head of Operations, her advice for those looking to also get promoted was to take advantage of the autonomy of community work. Community is a lot less defined than something like coding and that freedom means you can look for new ways to build out value for the company. Now that Emily has hired for her prior role in community she mentioned that the biggest thing to look for is empathy. With a junior hire, she says, it's pretty simple to train them and have them learn the technical side but hard for them to be effective if they don't have a strong sense of empathy.

Emily Pereira was living the perfect life, but deep down she knew that something didn’t feel right. When her life and relationship came crashing down, she realized that perfection wasn’t the answer, it was the problem. She went on a quest to find her real life’s passion and through writing and creativity, she discovered her authentic self and true happiness. Emily is a life and love coach, author, creator, retreat leader, mother, and an advocate for finding creative passion within to live your true magical and radiant life. She lives in a magical world in Costa Rica with her partner and her daughter. She now allows her creativity to flow and helps other women do the same. You will laugh and be inspired with this wonderful conversation I have with Emily. Show Notes: [03:09] Emily is a mompreneur who holds retreats in Costa Rica. [03:23] About 10 years ago, Emily started wondering when she was going to do something that truly mattered to her. [05:12] She worked for a Fortune 500 company and lived on the beach with an original Internet  tycon Myspace founder. [05:53] She did more of what she knew. She worked more, shopped more, and escaped more. [07:02] Emily was working from a framework of external happiness and deep down inside she had a nagging feeling that this wasn't working for her. [08:02] Her boyfriend cheated on her, and she moved out of the beachfront property. She was full of pity and blame. [08:40] A beautiful new beginning can be disguise by a painful ending. She connected with a powerful spiritual teacher. [09:47] She discovered that her pain had more to do with the illusion she had bought into than what had actually happened with her breakup. She didn't have to be perfect. [10:42] All of our thoughts have an energy validation. [12:02] It's not about being perfect, it's about being authentic. [13:02] Creativity is a natural part of being human. [14:06] You don't have to be perfect to participate, you just have to give yourself permission to be a beginner. [14:48] She began tearing down illusions and taking radical personal responsibility. [15:56] When are you going to do something that matters to you? This question kept coming up. [16:37] She knew she needed to write her story. [17:10] She began writing a little before bed. The words flowed freely when she suspended judgement. [18:57] The floods of creativity burst forth from her, and she started doing all types of creative endeavors from painting to dance. [19:45] She discovered that creativity was connected to spirituality. [20:05] She felt connected to who she was and why she was here in those moments of inspiration. [22:16] Writing is a super powerful way to draw the authentic out of you. [22:57] She also suddenly felt a camaraderie with other women. She discovered her life's work was going to be helping other women see the truth and beauty of who they are. [25:14] For Emily, success is touching lives and moments of bliss. [26:51] Emily had an epiphany where she discovered her new version of her authentic self. [28:53] Radiance and consciousness is an everyday practice. [29:42] Every morning she writes down 10 things that she is grateful for. [31:11] Things change, and there are going to be challenges. [33:05] Time management can be a challenge for a busy mom. [34:19] Emily lives in Costa Rica with her daughter and life partner. [35:40] She works with women who want to attract love. [36:36] The nature, jungle, and life force of Costa Rica is amazing. As well as the fruits. They have a very International community. [38:20] There's absolutely nothing wrong with you, if you aren't happy. You just bought into an illusion. People Helping People

Emily built the company Lilac Pack from the ground up - a true "moms helping moms" company, providing care packages to support women in their postpartum period (the first 6-8 weeks after childbirth), with their personal recovery and to help them get their best start nursing. It's a time when the attention is so focused on their newborn that quite often a new mother doesn't get the attention that they need. While they're in the hospital, there may be fantastic support and tons of information, but it's hard to take it all in, especially if you're medicated or otherwise overwhelmed from childbirth. Emily Lawrence, an engineer by trade, wanted to change this, so she brought her idea to an event called Give Back Hack. "It was insane." An introvert by nature, she gathered her wits and pitched her idea to a crowd of strangers, only to be surprised by such a supportive environment. Over a single weekend, she was able to form a team and flush out her project. "They pushed you to get out into the community… as in to put on your shoes and get on the ground and talk to people face-to-face to get their input on your idea." She was surprised at how much she accomplished over the weekend, but luckily her journey didn't end there. She went on to SEA Change - an accelerator for social enterprises, which provided her a 14-week deep dive into building her business model, connecting with experts, and further validating her idea. For Emily, it also gave her the opportunity to push herself to develop the social impact side of her business. As she puts it, it's easy to put this off until later, but you'll never get around to it -- instead, start with your impact and it gives you direction and a standard to live up to. So she built Lilac Pack as a social enterprise -- in addition to the core product, they are a living wage company that provides child care support. (Child daycare often creates a job barrier… the cost is too high for low wage jobs.) The third aspect to their social mission is resource matching -- they have a mommy map with locations of services for lactation consultants, doulas, and other similar services as an open directory of relevant services. Now she's up and running, and growing her business - learning how to tackle online marketing, and how to develop a presence on social media. I was so thankful that she shared some of her insight on the podcast. When asked what surprises she's had about starting a company, Emily responded: "I thought it was going to be harder. It is hard, and just like being a mom, it is relentless. It does not let up, but if you have an idea, and if you are passionate about that idea people will get behind you." Having Emily on the podcast is such a joy - we journeyed with her during SEA Change while we were building Wild Tiger Tees, our t-shirt screen printing social enterprise employing youth experiencing homelessness. She was one of the first to utilize our services to print t-shirts to helped us pilot our program - and she continues to openly share her business insight with us, magnifying the impact that she makes. I love what she’s doing with Lilac Pack, and if you know anyone about to give birth, her packages make for beautiful gifts - so go out and support her wonderful venture! Is the struggle for perfection squelching your creative energy? Before you are tempted to say NO, you need to listen to today’s show. We are hearing a personal story of a spiritual awakening, freedom from perfection, and the power of creative energy as a vehicle in cultivating self-worth. Emily Pereira was once entrenched in the corporate world, searching for happiness and fulfillment everywhere except for where it really exists. Emily had a breakdown that became an astonishing breakthrough. After discovering a treasure trove of passion and magic living inside her to which she was previously blind, she’s now helping other women attract soul-affirming love into their lives by showing them how to gain access to their magnetic, radiant selves via one-on-one coaching and transformational Costa Rica retreats. Her ebook, Unstoppable Woman, is available on Amazon, and her 300-page memoir, The Quest, is in the wings. A mom-preneur living her dream life in Costa Rica, Emily is giving other women a map for how to manifest the life that aligns with their heart. She’s here today to tell her amazing story. Living the dream Isn’t that what most people want---the dream? For Emily, her original dream was to be a teacher, but she found herself in pharmaceutical sales, a job she describes as having “golden handcuffs.” She lived a comfortable lifestyle even though she didn’t have passion for the job, but the benefits were top-notch. Fast forward five years when a life crisis caused her world to come crashing down in her late 20’s. Nothing was bringing her happiness, even though she had all the “stuff.”  TWEET: It can look like you “have it all” to everyone else and still be completely unhappy with your life. It’s not the stuff that makes you happy - it’s following your dreams. @bethebeginner The biggest illusion What is the biggest illusion in your life? When Emily connected to a spiritual teacher, he told her she had bought into illusions about herself and the way the world works, with the biggest one being that she had to be perfect in order to have approval, acceptance, and love. He said she was creative, but was freezing herself out of her natural creative passion with her attempt to be perfect. The result was that she was walking around in a constant state of judgment on herself. She says the key to finding freedom is giving yourself permission to be “the beginner” and taking on full radical personal responsibility. TWEET: “Give yourself the freedom to be imperfect and to be the beginner.” @bethebeginner “You’re a writer” Has someone ever told you something about yourself that took you by surprise? When Emily’s spiritual teacher said, “You’re a writer,” it took her awhile to believe and know where to start. He challenged her to set an intention, be the beginner, and write her story. She found with amazement that when she suspended judgment, the words flowed freely. Sentences turned into paragraphs, then pages, then chapters---and she was transformed in the process. She began to play guitar, sing, write songs, paint paintings, do improv, and dance burlesque in an explosion of creative passion. The floodgates were opened and created a cascade of spiritual changes.  TWEET: “Suspend judgement of yourself and finally be able to be in flow.” @bethebeginner Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Be patient with yourself and find people who are a little ahead of you on the path who can help you. Wondering how you can get PR and media coverage a for your agency? Afraid your agency isn't newsworthy? Then it's time to learn some simple tips to get your agency the media coverage it deserve so you can generate interest and leads organically, plus amplify your brand. Today's show guest is talking ways to jump-start your agency's publicity. In this episode, we'll cover: 3 tips to achieve media coverage. The #1 thing to do for a media interview. Today I chatted with Emily Richett, founder and owner of Richett Media. In 2013, Emily left her job as a TV news reporter to start a new venture and naturally leaned towards publicity. Over the past five years her agency has grown from a solo act, to now 5 full time employees. Emily shares some great advice on working with different media outlets and how to start getting your agency in the news. 3 Tips To Achieve Media Coverage Your agency is newsworthy, even if you don't think so. There are always ways to be newsworthy if you understands what the media outlets are targeting, what they care about and the natural ebb and flow of the news cycle. Emily shared 3 big tips for getting noticed by the media: Make it easy for the media to want to cover your story. The media is going to cover seasonal and holiday trends, based on their annual calendar. If you can connect the dots for them and align with a season or time-sensitive current trend you're more likely to get noticed. Create the hook for the media. Often times reporters are too busy, so if you do some of the leg work for them it's a much easier sell. Tie into what the media outlet's viewers care about. People care about people (not businesses) and their impact on society. Outline how your agency is making an impact, whether on a local or national level. Utilize social media as a media lead generation tool. On Twitter search #journalrequest, where journalists request information and quotes for stories. On LinkedIn, use Dux Soup as a lead generation tool to leverage for media lead generation. Check out other resources, like H.A.R.O. ("Help a Reporter Out") The #1 Thing To Do For a Media Interview Prepare in advance! You want to leverage this media opportunity, so you MUST do your homework in order to make your media coverage great. See if  you can find out what questions they will ask. A great way to do this is to study past interviews. Create a list of questions you want to be asked in order to touch on the important topics; provide the list to the media outlet. If your agency will be in print, provide professional pictures and /or headshots. If you agency will be on TV, shoot a hi-res B-roll and provide it. Remember to be yourself. Find your agency's voice. [clickToTweet tweet="Fifty-percent of a great PR opportunity is getting the press. Where in the world have we been?! That's right. What magical places have we traveled to and where do we want to go next? For Emily, traveling began at a young age with family trips to Mexico, Canada, and annual road trips to Florida to visit family. For Betsy, traveling came much later in her life and has been an opportunity to celebrate life and explore the world outside of the home (and town) she grew up in. Now that we're both older (and wiser?), our traveling whims have changed. For Emily, the 4-year-old central protagonist, and the viewer alike, it's a head-spinning tour of the medium-near future where cloning and life extension, virtual reality, autonomous robots, "discount" time travel, and even living on the moon are all part of the same tedious experience as our own smartphones and instant communications. Also discussed: what happens when our memories become art, or commodity?; in this Netflix-YouTube age, why aren't more short films being made?; what themes from this resonate with Hertzfeldt's earlier work?; and how close are we to virtual reality with the Oculus Rift and the 2016 procedurally generated adventure game No Man's Sky? Recovery from addiction is a particularly challenging process for women, who are also mothers, to go through. Emily Lynn Paulson, author of the book, Highlight Real: Finding Honesty and Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life, is our guest for today's show. She shares the story of her addiction and her journey along the path of the process of recovery and healing. Emily lives in Seattle and she's is the mother of five children. She has been sober for three years now, and she is a certified, professional recovery coach. Emily used to dislike herself a lot. She had difficulty with being honest, both with herself and with others. From a very young age, she used to tell white lies to cover up the things she didn't like about herself and to make up for the things she thought she lacked. Episode Link>> www.theaddictedmind.com/80 ( http://www.theaddictedmind.com/80 ) When Emily started drinking, it helped her to cover up, and make up, for the things she didn't like about herself or that she thought she lacked. The first time she ever drank alcohol, she realized that it affected her differently to the way it affected her peers. Rather than just having fun, when she drank, she felt that she was finally the person she was always meant to be. This theme wove its way into different areas of her life and followed her until she found recovery. When she was younger, it was hard for Emily to make the connection between alcohol and her problem because back then it was still relatively easy for her to hide things from other people. Bad things didn't happen every time she drank but every time something bad happened, she had been drinking. At college, her problem was easy to hide because everyone was drinking all the time and her behavior didn't appear to be any different from that of anyone else. As an adult, Emily had five children and she didn't drink while she was pregnant. So she continued denying her problem for quite some time until the consequences of her drinking finally started outweighing what she thought she was getting out of it. Emily didn't believe she was an alcoholic at first because she thought she could stop drinking. She made several attempts to stop but she always started again. Deep down, she knew that she had a problem but she was not willing to let it go forever. That is alcoholic-thinking, and it is very common. Eventually, it got to the point where Emily could no longer deny her alcoholism. All the dishonesty, secrecy, and lies of omission can make addiction a soul-crushing condition. Other people are often not fully aware of what is going on, so they don't step in and offer to help. Although Emily came to realize that dishonesty didn't work, it was still very hard for her to become fully honest. She found that coming out with her sobriety, and also writing her book, helped her to make the connection and become truthful about who she was, and about the things she still needed to deal with. She knew that she could not start afresh without first dealing with everything that had come before. It's very easy to give a false impression of what is going on in our lives with social media. And many people fall into the social media "comparison-trap". Having to confront her kids with her alcoholism was the most difficult part of recovery for Emily but it was also her biggest blessing because it brought about some very necessary conversations. Alcohol is not something that women have to do to survive their kids. For Emily, her book is an important message to women, telling them how necessary it is, to tell the truth to other women about what alcohol does to mothers. Since Emily started putting her sobriety first, she has been able to be there for her family in a way that she has never known before. Her life has become so much better. She's not perfect now, but her best day when she was drinking was always way worse than her worst day, sober. *Links and resources:* Emily's website - www.emilylynnpaulson.com ( http://www.emilylynnpaulson.com/ ) Emily on Instagram - @highlight real recovery You can find Emily's book on Amazon ( https://amzn.to/2MuEhPJ )
