Send us a textEver wonder why some conversations just flow while others feel like pulling teeth? We kick off this episode exploring a fascinating New York Times study that reveals the secret to meaningful connections isn't finding similarities—it's creating shared moments through "riffing." This simple technique transforms small talk into genuine connection, whether with new acquaintances or longtime friends. The legendary Pumpkin Spice Latte makes its seasonal appearance in our studio as we conduct a live taste test with surprising results. Despite its cult following and massive popularity, we're left questioning what all the fuss is about when the drink tastes more like "melted vanilla ice cream" than anything resembling pumpkin. Our honest reactions might make you reconsider your next coffee order!Fashion trends take center stage as we discuss how Gen Z has officially declared leggings "out" while embracing track pants reminiscent of 90s hip hop dancers. We navigate the practical implications of this style shift (spoiler: some activities still require leggings) and share a personal shopping experience that confirms the trend. Plus, we mourn the discontinuation of the beloved s'mores Girl Scout cookie while questioning the confusing name of its replacement.Throughout our conversation, we explore lunch traditions from around the world—from Japanese bento boxes to Danish open-faced herring sandwiches—while reflecting on our own midday meal preferences and the challenges of packing school lunches. The episode wraps with heartwarming highs and lows, including forgotten groceries, word game archives, and a touching moment when a daughter stepped up to help her tired mom.Join our casual, authentic conversation that feels like catching up with friends over coffee (preferably not a PSL). Er der grænser for, hvad man kan bruge en nedlagt kirke til? Det emne er igen aktuelt, efter at en række danske præster har talt for flere kirkelukninger i de danske landsogne. Send us a textFall has officially arrived, and we're celebrating with our signature blend of random observations and seasonal musings! Fresh off our annual Chardy Party (complete with a giant bottle of Rombauer and an unexpected second wave of late-night revelry), we're diving into autumn with renewed energy and plenty to discuss.Have you ever wondered what Chardonnay-flavored lip oil tastes like? Spoiler alert: not like Chardonnay at all! We sample this peculiar product and discover it's more cake batter than wine, which leads us down a rabbit hole of fall trends including the famous Pumpkin Spice Latte that was almost called something entirely different. Did you know Princess Kate is going blonder? Should brown pants really be this season's wardrobe staple? We have thoughts. The conversation takes some unexpected turns as we explore Europe's recent ban on gel nail polish due to concerning chemicals, Iceland's conservation efforts that literally involve throwing baby puffins off cliffs (for their own good!), and the extravagant transformation of college dorm rooms that has us questioning whether students should still experience the character-building joys of "roughing it." But the heart of our episode is a spirited debate about turtlenecks - from their practical origins protecting medieval knights' necks to their evolution as fashion statements worn by everyone from Audrey Hepburn to Steve Jobs. One of us champions their elegance while the other questions their comfort, all while reminiscing about our 1980s childhood fashion experiences that included unfortunate haircuts, coordinated outfits, and accessories with plastic fruit.Join us for this cozy fall conversation filled with laughs, nostalgia, and maybe even some fashion inspiration. Whether you're Team Turtleneck or not, we promise you'll be entertained by our journey through seasonal trends, bizarre global phenomena, and memories of matching pinafores!Mike Haggerty Buick GMCRight on the corner, right on the price! On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso discuss the latest restaurant industry news, including Taco Bell's plans for voice AI in the drive thru, Starbucks' best week ever, McDonald's issue with tipped wages, and M&A activity heating up. First up is Taco Bell, which found itself in headlines when a viral video showed its voice AI glitching when a customer tried to order thousands of cups of water. While it was a prank, it called out the unreliability of some AI today, and Sam and Alicia discuss what it could mean for customer-facing AI at restaurants. Next they talk about Starbucks, which had some AI news of its own: It rolled out an inventory management tool that will benefit its operators. The coffee giant also announced that it had enjoyed its best sales week ever after the annual Pumpkin Spice Latte launch. Sam and Alicia break down these headlines and what they mean for Starbucks. Then they tackle the news that McDonald's was parting ways with the National Restaurant Association over a dispute about the sub-minimum wage; the Golden Arches has drawn a line in the sand and claims the sub-minimum wage is making labor competition unfair between quick and full serve restaurants. Could this be the first domino to fall in a bigger industry-wide tipping conversation? Managing editor Leigh Anne Zinsmeister then joins for the extra serving portion of the episode to talk about recent merger and acquisition news, including Freddy's acquisition and the rumors of other chains that could be up for sale. Finally, we share a conversation between senior food and beverage editor Bret Thorn and Original ChopShop's Kyle Frederick. It was a big Pumpkin Spice Latte debut for Starbucks. Black Rock Coffee is looking for a big IPO. And one BBQ chain continues to close stores

Text Our Show HostsTonight, we're talking about Fall Season CropsFinally…The morning air is crisp again. The days are getting shorter. And although it's still warm, or even hot during the day, most people are winding down their gardens for the year. And why not? With Labor Day and Football just a few days from now, the summer is coming to an end. Kids are back in school. Grocery stores are already stocking up on Halloween Candy. Before ya know it, they'll be jack-o-lanterns sitting on bails of straw on front porches and coffee houses pushing Pumpkin Spice Lattes to passer byes. And yes… I'm a big fan of Autumn. I love it. But our gardens don't… Or do they…?Ya see, homesteaders know that Fall may be the end of Summer growing season, but they are keenly aware that it's just another beginning for their gardens. Cuz when one door closes, another always opens. The start of this season is important, if you want groceries in your pantry throughout Winter. It's all about planting cold-hardy greens, root vegetables that thrive underground, and cover crops that rebuild the soil, so next year's harvest is even stronger. And it's about turning challenges, like shorter days, dropping temps, and pests looking for a last meal, into opportunities for your family's resilience and abundance. If you've never planted in fall, this is your moment to start. Spinach, Kale, Carrots, Radishes, Garlic, and so many more, these aren't just crops, consider them nutritious survival insurance. And while pests may be hungry and persistent, the right strategies, like organic deterrents, companion planting, and watchful management, you'll keep your garden thriving while others are shutting theirs down. From nasty bugs to cover crops, we'll discuss everything you need to know, as Preppers, to begin Fall Season Gardening. We come bearing gifts! Arctic Circle seemed like the best place to review with Santa Claus in tow, so we took a road trip out to southern Utah to try it! The Good: the mini corn dogs were genuinely great, and Santa brightened a few patrons' days by having gifts for the children! The Not Good: Someone complained to management about aforementioned gift-giving, and we had to cease, also not all the food was great The Just There: To be honest, this whole chain was pretty mediocre What We Ate: Three burgers (standard, bacon, and pastrami), pumpkin pie milkshake, fries, Spanish onion rings, mini corn dogs, cheese curds, root beer ice cream (with a butterscotch topper), fry sauce Santa talks about eating "rabbit on a swing" during the fanciest meal he's ever had "Fine" Dining is now on video! The word "basic" often gets thrown around to describe anything that's mainstream, popular, frictionless, or otherwise inoffensive. But sometimes basic stuff is just what we crave, whether it's a binge-watch, a popular song, or a pumpkin spice latte. It's fall, so today we're talking about what we're calling... Pop Culture Pumpkin Spice Lattes.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
It's been 21 years since Starbucks debuted the first pumpkin spice latte in 2003. Since then, it's become a cultural phenomenon greater than itself: it's shorthand for fall, for basicness, for femininity, and even for white culture. In this episode from last year, we explore why the PSL became so powerful — and how food trends garner so much meaning. Host Brittany Luse chatted with Suzy Badaracco, food trend forecaster and founder of Culinary Tides, to discuss the $500 million dollar industry, and how little miss pumpkin spice has held on to her cultural power.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Summer vacation might officially be over for Nikki & Brie. After a wild summer in the mountains, Brie's ready for the routine of the school year. Nikki has something to say about an Instagram comment that was critical of her openness about going to therapy and the effort she's making to make all of her relationships better and evaluate communication in her marriage. Both Nikki & Brie have noticed some significant changes in how they eat and drink lately. Nikki has come to the realization that three drinks is too many and two is the magic number. Brie's noticed that she's not able to handle certain foods the same way. One thing that Nikki and Brie both have no problems with is black licorice. It could be a problem. Brie's in full Halloween mode, but Nikki thinks she could be getting ahead of herself. It's not even Labor Day and Pumpkin Spice Latte's on the menu. All of this Halloween talk reminds Nikki about something that Brie did to her house that left a lasting mark and a tiny bit of pumpkin rage. While it could be too early for PSL's, Brie already has her family Halloween costume set, while Nikki is weighing her options, but there's a clear front runner. Then, to get ready for the new school year, Nikki & Brie have to get on the same page with Editor in Beef. The Garcia Twins are editors of the school yearbook, and they have to assign superlatives to Artem, Matteo Bryan, Birdie, Buddy, and themselves. Nikki also gives some background on what she's doing in Las Vegas on Labor Day. Nikki will be hosting the Netflix special. Joey Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef will stream on Netflix on September 2! Brie closes the episode out with her pick for Inspiration & Affirmation, which is all about joy and fulfillment for yourself and not living for others. Learn more about Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef Call Nikki & Brie at 833-GARCIA2 and leave a voicemail! Follow Nikki & Brie on Instagram and send Nikki & Brie a message on Threads!
