Celebrating Episode 200 In Kansas City With NLBM President, Bob Kendrick, Former MLB Player, Ed Hearn, and BBQ HOF Member, Ardie Davis Episode 200 was not going to pass without us doing something special and so we took the show to Kansas City where baseball and barbecue are part of the city's foundation.  While there we had the pleasure of spending time with three previous guests. Bob Kendrick is president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri and was our very first podcast guest almost six years ago.  After his first appearance he joined us two more times and each discussion was even better than the one before.  This was our first time meeting in person and we were overjoyed to meet Bob as we greatly respect his talents as a baseball historian, phenomenal storyteller, and an incredible steward of the game.  We talked about his passion for the museum, the history it preserves, and the stories it tells.  Go to https://www.nlbm.com/ for more information on Bob and the museum. Ed Hearn is a former Major League Baseball player.  He was part of the New York Mets 1986 World Series Championship and played briefly for the Kansas City Royals.  We had Ed on once before and Jeff proudly wore Ed's #49 at New York Mets Fantasy Camp.  Ed was extremely thoughtful to invite us into his home where we had the chance to try on his World Serious ring as well as see his other championship memorabilia.  We met his wife, Trisha and his dog, Hartley.  Ed recently received a new kidney and thankfully is feeling better.  It is very special the way that Jeff calls Ed #49 and Ed calls Jeff #49.   Ardie Davis was a guest once on the show, but meeting him in person was a huge thrill and he met us on a long line at Slap's BBQ.  Ardie is a 2016 Barbecue Hall of Fame inductee in the celebrity/humanitarian category.  Ardie is a founder of the American Royal Barbecue Sauce Contest which is the world's largest sauce contest.  He is a charter member of the KCBS, instrumental in the development of the Certified Barbecue Judge curriculum, and author of the oath recited by each judge prior to judging a contest.  We affectionately refer to him as barbecue royalty and you would be hard pressed to find anyone who would say otherwise.   The show is filled with congratulatory messages and then Jeff and Len reflect on what the podcast and achieving 200 episodes means to them.   We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. We recommend you go to Baseball BBQ, https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories,  Magnechef https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves, Cutting Edge Firewood High Quality Kiln Dried Firewood - Cutting Edge Firewood in Atlanta for high quality firewood and cooking wood, Mantis BBQ, https://mantisbbq.com/ to purchase their outstanding sauces with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Kidney Project, and for exceptional sauces, Elda's Kitchen https://eldaskitchen.com/ We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe. Episode 120 features part 2 with Barbecue Hall of Famer, Ardie Davis, and BBQ rubs and sauces creator, Denny Mike and a discussion with baseball umpire, Perry Barber.    Ardie Davis aka Remus Powers, Ph.B. is a 2016 Barbecue Hall of Fame inductee in the celebrity/humanitarian category. Ardie has written numerous BBQ books.  He has also been interviewed by the History Channel regarding barbecue, on more than one occasion.  In 2003 he was named a Kansas City Barbecue Legend by the Kansas City Star.  We affectionately referred to him as barbecue royalty and you would be hard pressed to find anyone who would say otherwise.         Dennis Michael Sherman is known by thousands of satisfied customer's as Denny Mike.  Since 2006, Denny, the creator of super-premium, all-natural and gluten-free sauces and seasoning blends has been selling these products with the DennyMike's label proudly displayed.  His products are sold in Whole Foods as well as Hannaford Brothers and fortunately online at https://www.dennymikes.com.  Denny shares his stories of a business which is extremely competitive, but having a great product has helped him prevail.  Denny has forged many wonderful friendships throughout the years and it is due to this that we were fortunate he asked Ardie to join us and we are very grateful for that.          Perry Barber has been a baseball umpire since 1981.  She got her start umpiring Little League games and then, at her mother's urging, attended her first professional umpire school, Harry Wendelstedt's with her twin sister in 1982.  She has attended the school several times, working hard at honing her craft.  We can fill the remaining lines talking about her umpiring career, but we also want to mention that she is a Jeopardy champion.  We can talk about how umpiring has provided her the opportunity to travel around the world,  but then we might miss mentioning her time as a singer/songwriter and that she has opened for Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, and Hall & Oates.   We even played a quick round of baseball themed Jeopardy with her pitted against Jeff.  Perry is a true Renaissance woman and we must have her back again. We recommend you go to Fifth & Cherry, https://fifthandcherry.com for wonderful cutting boards, http://www.baseballbbq.com for grill tools and clothing for barbecue and baseball fans, the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag, and DennyMike's, https://www.dennymikes.com for some delicious barbecue rubs.We conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Ace and Bobo" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe.If you would like to contact the show, we would love to hear from you.Call the show:  (516) 855-8214Email:  baseballandbbq@gmail.comTwitter:  @baseballandbbqInstagram:  baseballandbarbecueYouTube:  baseball and bbqWebsite:  https//baseballandbbq.weebly.comFacebook:  baseball and bbq

In episode 119 we pull off a rare triple play as we have three outstanding guests; author, Dan Joseph, Barbecue Hall of Fame member, Ardie Davis, and BBQ rubs and  sauces creator, Dennis Michael Sherman aka Denny Mike.    Dan Joseph joined us on episode 51 to discuss his book, Last Ride of the Iron Horse: How Lou Gehrig Fought ALS to Play One Last Championship SeasonSeason and he returns to regale us with stories about Pistol Pete Reiser found in his latest book, Baseball's Greatest What If:  The Story & Tragedy of the Brooklyn Dodgers' Pistol Pete Reiser.  If Reiser's first season and a half was any indication, not only was he on his way to a Hall of Fame career, but he was on his way to becoming one of the game's greatest.  Unfortunately, part of what made Pistol Pete great, was his willingness to put his body on the line no matter what the outcome, and that included crashing into several outfield brick walls.  Dan presents Reiser's story in such a way that by the end of the book you will feel awful that Reiser's playing career cut short by injuries and feel regret at missing the talented career that could have been.     Ardie Davis aka Remus Powers, Ph.B. is a 2016 Barbecue Hall of Fame member in the celebrity/humanitarian category. Ardie has written numerous BBQ books.  He has also been interviewed by the History Channel regarding barbecue, on more than one occasion.  In 2003 he was named a Kansas City Barbecue Legend by the The Kansas City Star.  We affectionately referred to him as barbecue royalty, and you would be hard-pressed to find anyone who would say otherwise. Denny has forged many wonderful friendships throughout the years and it is due to this that we were fortunate that he asked Ardie to join us, and we are very grateful for that.          We recommend you go to Fifth & Cherry, https://fifthandcherry.com for incredible cutting boards, http://www.baseballbbq.com for grill tools and clothing for barbecue and baseball fans, the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the astounding books we have featured as well as some additional swag, and DennyMike's, https://www.dennymikes.com for some delicious barbecue rubs.We conclude the show with the song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. If you would like to contact the show, we would love to hear from you.Call the show:  (516) 855-8214Email:  baseballandbbq@gmail.comTwitter:  @baseballandbbqInstagram:  baseballandbarbecueFacebook: Baseball and BBQWebsite: www.baseballandbbq.weebly.com

Ardie Davis, better known by many for his larger-than-life, 'cue-themed alias, Remus Powers Ph.B., knows a thing or two about barbecue. He invented the American Royal's Sauce Competition, has authored 12 books on the topic and he's in the Barbecue Hall of Fame. We picked some bones together and talked KC-style smokin', regionalism and what's next for the cuisine.

SHOW NOTES FOR EPISODE 17 This show features a conversation with another barbecue icon, the wonderful, wise and funny Karen Adler, who has written some fabulous cookbooks, many of them in collaboration with her friend and fellow Barbecue Queen Judith Fertig. Their latest is The Gardener and the Grill: The Bounty of the Garden Meets the Sizzle of the Grill.  In the show I asked Karen to name some of her favorite cookbooks. She recommends: Michael Chiarella's Live Fire America's Best BBQ Homestyle: What the Champions Cook in Their Own Back Yards, by Ardie Davis and Paul Kirk Smoking Meat: The Essential Guide to Real Barbecue, by Jeff Phillips, and Championship Barbecue Secrets for Real Smoked Food by Karen Putman and Judith Fertig.  You can get all these books online through the usual sources, but I recommend that you buy them directly from Karen's book distribution business, Pig Out Publications.  I also asked Karen to share a couple of her favourite recipes for the grill, which I posted on the blog last week. I encourage you to give them a try! I'D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU! Write me at rockinronnie at ronshewchuk.com, tweet me @rockinronnie, or post something on the Barbecue Secrets Facebook page.
