Über Catania hängt ein grauer Schleier, feiner als Puderzucker, aber tückisch wie Glassplitter: Es stinkt nach feuchter Vulkanasche. Der Ätna, Europas unberechenbarer Gigant, hat wieder einmal beschlossen, das letzte Wort zu führen. Während die Touristen in den Cafés der Via Etnea normalerweise ihren Espresso genießen, blicken sie heute starr auf ihre Smartphones. Die Nachricht ist überall dieselbe: Warnstufe Rot. Der Stillstand am Tor zur Insel Hinter den Kulissen des Flughafens von Catania spielt sich ein logistischer Albtraum ab. Normalerweise werden hier jährlich mehr als zwölf Millionen Passagiere abgefertigt. Doch an diesem Morgen ist die Bilanz ernüchternd: Nur eine einzige Maschine konnte für einen Inlandsflug abheben. Auf dem Rollfeld bietet sich ein gespenstisches Bild. Flugzeuge, die Millionen wert sind, stehen unter grauen Abdeckplanen; besonders die Triebwerke müssen akribisch vor dem Ascheregen geschützt werden. Währenddessen kämpfen Reinigungstrupps in einer Sisyphusarbeit gegen die Natur an, um die Start- und Landebahnen immer wieder von den vulkanischen Partikeln zu befreien. Für die rund 30.000 betroffenen Menschen bedeutet dies: Warten. Die Unterkünfte auf der Insel sind zur Hauptreisezeit restlos ausgebucht, was dazu führt, dass Reisende die Nacht auf dem harten Boden des Terminals verbringen müssen. Die Stimmung schwankt zwischen Resignation und Wut, oft befeuert durch ein Bodenpersonal, das sichtlich überfordert ist, und Fluggesellschaften, deren Hilfestellungen viele Passagiere als unzureichend beschreiben. Kapitalismus im Schatten des Vulkans Wo Not herrscht, ist die Gier oft nicht weit. Der italienische Schauspieler Filippo Laganà machte seinem Ärger auf Instagram Luft und berichtete von Geschäftemachern, die die Verzweiflung der Gestrandeten schamlos ausnutzen. Wer versucht, auf den Flughafen von Palermo auszuweichen, muss tief in die Tasche greifen: Bis zu 700 Euro verlangten Shuttle-Anbieter für die rund 200 Kilometer lange Strecke. Die Flucht auf die Schiene ist kaum einfacher. Die direkte Bahnverbindung zwischen Catania und Palermo ist wegen Bauarbeiten unterbrochen; wer den Umweg über Messina wählt, landet in Zügen, die so überfüllt sind, dass man kaum stehen kann. Selbst die Fernzüge Richtung Rom sind auf Tage hinaus ausgebucht. Sizilien, das Paradies, ist in diesen Tagen für viele zu einem goldenen Käfig aus Asche geworden. Recht haben und Recht bekommen Inmitten dieses Chaos stellt sich die existenzielle Frage: Wer zahlt das alles? Inga Eleni Esch vom Europäischen Verbraucherzentrum (EVZ) Deutschland bringt es auf den Punkt: Ein Vulkanausbruch gilt rechtlich als „außergewöhnlicher Umstand“. Das bedeutet für Reisende zunächst eine schlechte Nachricht: Eine zusätzliche Entschädigungszahlung, wie man sie von profanen Verspätungen kennt, gibt es nicht. Doch die Airlines sind nicht gänzlich aus der Pflicht. Nach der EU-Fluggastrechteverordnung müssen sie Betreuungsleistungen erbringen. Das bedeutet konkret: Verpflegung: Angemessene Mahlzeiten und Getränke während der Wartezeit. Kommunikation: Zwei kostenlose Telefonate oder E-Mails. Übernachtung: Falls der Ersatzflug erst am nächsten Tag startet, muss die Airline das Hotel und den Transfer bezahlen. Wer sich in der Hitze des Gefechts selbst um ein Zimmer kümmert, sollte unbedingt alle Quittungen sammeln, um die Kosten später einzureichen. Besonders wichtig: Die Airline ist verpflichtet, eine Ersatzbeförderung anzubieten – sei es mit einer anderen Maschine, einer anderen Airline oder einem anderen Transportmittel wie dem Bus oder der Bahn. Das Privileg der Pauschalreise In Krisenzeiten zeigt sich der wahre Wert des klassischen Reiseveranstalters. Wer pauschal gebucht hat, steht deutlich sicherer da. Ab der fünften Stunde der Verspätung greift ein Minderungsrecht: Der Tagesreisepreis reduziert sich um fünf Prozent für jede weitere Stunde. Zudem muss sich der Veranstalter um alles kümmern, inklusive bis zu drei zusätzlicher Hotelübernachtungen, falls nichts mehr geht. Diesen Betreuungs-Luxus haben Individualreisende nicht. Sie müssen jedes Hotel, jeden Mietwagen und jeden Flug separat stornieren oder umbuchen. Hier gilt oft das gnadenlose Kleingedruckte: Ist das Hotel am Zielort geöffnet und erreichbar, muss trotz Flugausfall oft gezahlt werden, es sei denn, man findet eine Kulanzlösung. Auch herkömmliche Reiserücktrittsversicherungen winken bei Naturkatastrophen oft ab – es sei denn, man hat das teure Premium-Paket gebucht. Ein Blick zurück nach vorn Die aktuelle Lage weckt Erinnerungen an das Jahr 2010, als der isländische Eyjafjallajökull den europäischen Luftraum fast eine Woche lang lahmlegte. Doch die Luftfahrt hat gelernt. Statt pauschaler Flugverbote gibt es heute präzisere Vorhersagemodelle und abgestufte Aschezonen. Dennoch bleibt das Restrisiko Natur. Wer klug ist, trägt sich in die Krisenvorsorgeliste der deutschen Botschaft ein und hält engen Kontakt zum Veranstalter. Zitronen und Zuversicht Am Ende hilft im Chaos sowieso nur noch Galgen-Humor. Inmitten der fluchenden Menge am Busbahnhof sitzt ein älteres Ehepaar aus Castrop-Rauxel. Sie haben ihren Flug nach Hause vor drei Tagen verpasst. Ihr Koffer ist irgendwo zwischen Check-in und Aschewolke verschollen. In der Hand halten sie zwei Plastikbecher mit tiefgelber Zitronen-Granita. „Wissen Sie“, sagt der Mann und wischt sich ein paar graue Ascheflocken vom Hemd, „der Flieger ist weg, das Geld wohl auch. Aber so eine Granita schmeckt nirgendwo so gut wie hier, auch, wenn man eigentlich schon längst wieder im Büro sitzen müsste. Bei aller Vorfreude sollten Reisende jedoch die finanziellen Risiken einer Krankheit oder eines Unfalls im Ausland nicht unterschätzen. „Im Urlaub medizinische Hilfe zu erhalten, kann je nach Reiseland hohe Kosten verursachen – insbesondere ein Rücktransport kann sehr teuer werden“, sagt man beim Bund der Versicherten e. V. (BdV).  Daher sollte bei der Urlaubsplanung das Thema Versicherungen nicht zu kurz kommen. Allerdings sind nicht alle Reiseversicherungen sinnvoll.   Darauf kommt es bei der Auslandsreisekrankenversicherung an Eine der essenziellen Absicherungen für Reisen ins Ausland ist die Auslandsreisekrankenversicherung (ARKV). Sie übernimmt die Kosten für eine Heilbehandlung im Ausland und für einen medizinisch notwendigen Rücktransport, die von der gesetzlichen Krankenkasse nicht übernommen werden. Beim Abschluss einer Auslandsreisekrankenversicherung sollten Verbraucherinnen und Verbraucher darauf achten, dass der Versicherer die Kosten für den Rücktransport aus dem Ausland zum ständigen Wohnsitz oder dem vom ständigen Wohnsitz nächstgelegenen und geeigneten Krankenhaus trägt, wenn der Rücktransport medizinisch sinnvoll und vertretbar ist. Dies gilt auch für den Fall einer stationären Heilbehandlung, die nach ärztlicher Prognose länger als 14 Tage andauern würde. Außerdem sollte eine Erkrankung, die bereits vor Antritt der Reise bestand, mitversichert sein, wenn sie sich während der Auslandsreise verschlimmert.   Auslandsreisekrankenversicherung: Auf diese Kriterien sollten Sie achten. Wichtig: Vorhersehbare Behandlungen sind vom Versicherungsschutz der ARKV grundsätzlich ausgeschlossen. Vorhersehbar ist eine Behandlung beispielsweise dann, wenn sie für die Reisezeit geplant war oder schon vor Reiseantritt feststand. „Reisekrankenschutz ist oft in Kreditkarten eingeschlossen – aber Vorsicht: Die Leistungen sind in der Regel deutlich schlechter als bei einer gesonderten Auslandsreisekrankenversicherung“, sagt man beim BdV. So sind beispielsweise die Such-, Rettungs- und Bergungskosten nicht versichert und die Versicherungssummen meist niedriger. Zudem kann es sein, dass nur dann Versicherungsschutz besteht, wenn die Reise mit der Kreditkarte gebucht wurde. „Wir raten daher dazu, sich zusätzlich über einen separaten Vertrag abzusichern“.   Reisegepäckversicherung: Oft lückenhafter Versicherungsschutz    Auch Reisegepäck- und Reiserücktrittversicherungen sieht man kritisch. Sie sicherten keine existenziellen Risiken ab und oft ist nicht nachvollziehbar, wann Versicherte eine Leistung erwarten können. Proaktiv vorgehen – Trends früh erkennen: EFSA-Studien kündigen spätere Rechtsänderungen an. Das Beispiel Acetamiprid zeigt es: Nach toxikologischen Betrachtungen der EFSA (2024) folgten 2025 gleich zwei MRL-Anpassungen. We, at OT Potential, keep hearing stories of more and more OTs teaming up with optometrists to provide vision remediation interventions. (Vision remediation focuses on retraining the eye and brain connection. This is in contrast to low vision therapy, which focuses on compensation and adapting the environment to  maximize remaining vision.)The need is clear: occupational therapy can provide needed interventions for those with diagnosed visual inefficiencies from such things as acquired brain injury, or even developmentally — but the number of OTs with this training is not keeping pace with the need. But, what does it take to fill this gap? On today's 1 hour webinar we are lucky to have one OT, Alicia Reiser OTD, who has built a private practice around this need.
