In this episode, you'll discover: Why humans create meaning in fundamentally similar ways regardless of their cosmic beliefs How suffering can be both brutal reality and catalyst for transformation The unexpected freedom that comes from separating your identity from your beliefs Are we discovering meaning that's already built into reality, or are we just making it up as we go in a universe that couldn't care less? Last week we dove into the wild possibility that our reality might actually be a simulation. Today we're tackling something just as mind-blowing - what happens when you tear down religious beliefs and have to build something new from scratch? I grew up with Christianity giving me all the answers. Heaven, hell, God watching everything - the whole package. Then I started asking questions nobody could answer, and my entire belief system crumbled. That's terrifying. You're standing in this void where nothing makes sense anymore, and you have to figure it all out yourself. What nobody tells you about spiritual deconstruction is that the void isn't just intellectual - it's emotional, social, even physical. Your entire identity gets ripped apart. The community that once supported you becomes foreign territory. The certainty that grounded you vanishes. For me, that process was both devastating and ultimately liberating. My guest today is Britt. She went from Mormon true believer to theology scholar and landed at atheism. But here's the twist - she didn't throw spirituality out with religion. She built a secular approach that captures the good stuff without requiring you to believe in anything supernatural. We're diving into territory most spiritual podcasts won't touch - that messy space between blind faith and total emptiness. No sugar-coating, no spiritual bypassing. Just real talk about free will, consciousness, quantum weirdness, and what the hell you do when everything you once believed turns out to be someone else's story. Legendary American scholar and critic Tom Gunning has changed the way we think about film history and the future of the medium, profoundly influencing generations of academics, artists, and cinephiles. On Sunday, April 27, Devika Girish and Clinton Krute hosted a live conversation with Gunning and curator David Schwartz at the Museum of the Moving Image, following a screening of Hal Hartley's Flirt (1995), an experimental narrative of love and loss set in three cities—New York, Berlin, and Tokyo. The event was part of a multiday series of screenings and discussions organized by Schwartz, taking place at venues including MoMI, Anthology Film Archives, and Light Industry. This special weekend marked the publication of a new collection of Gunning's writing, entitled The Attractions of the Moving Image: Essays on History, Theory, and the Avant-Garde. The conversation covered a wide range of topics, from Gunning's seminal essay “The Cinema of Attractions” (1986) to his teacher-student relationship with Hartley to some contemporary films that he's (perhaps surprisingly) enjoyed.

When your CFI asks for your name and you respond with "standby" – you're experiencing what pilots call a helmet fire. In this episode, Ben, Brian, and Ted dive into the phenomenon of task saturation that affects pilots at every level, from Ben's instrument approach adventures where he made what sounded like "Charlie Brown's teacher" over the radio, to Ted's coastal flight where turning back was the smartest option. The crew shares practical strategies for extinguishing these cognitive infernos: slowing down both mentally and physically, asking for delay vectors, and constantly thinking ahead by asking "what are the next two things?" They discuss how flying with other pilots can increase pressure, why preparation is critical, and how everyone from students to seasoned pilots can recover when they fall behind the airplane. Plus, updates on the upcoming T82 fly-in (80 attendees, 39 aircraft!), community milestone celebrations, and a reminder that, as Wendell Geek says, "helmet fires are like exercise – they suck in the moment, but in the long run they make you stronger."Mentioned on the show:* VLD - Valdosta Georgia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valdosta_Regional_Airport* The Underbelly Project: https://viralart.vandalog.com/read/chapter/the-underbelly-project/* The Towering Inferno: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Towering_Inferno* M02 - Dickson County Airport, Tenn: https://www.airnav.com/airport/M02* the Dixie Dregs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixie_Dregs* L.P. Hashknife Hartley and Sleepy Stevens - 50-xx-xx (1) The Double Cross
This episode was originally published on May 5th, 2018. Remembering the grocery list, coordinating with the babysitter, making food for the potluck, scheduling a get-together with the in-laws: These are some of the invisible tasks that (most) women exclusively do in their romantic relationships — and the list goes on and on. Like a modern-day Greek chorus, women from across the country wrote in to the Dear Sugars inbox echoing identical inequalities in their relationships with their husbands and boyfriends. The Sugars commiserate with this aggrieved chorus along with Gemma Hartley, the writer who set off a national conversation about emotional labor with her viral article in Harper's Bazaar, “Women Aren't Nags — We're Just Fed Up.” Broaching the subject of emotional labor with a romantic partner can be tricky, especially if he feels as if he's being blamed for the imbalance of labor. The imbalance in Ms. Hartley's marriage began righting itself when she and her husband shifted their perspective: “This is not a problem with you and it's not a problem with me. It's a cultural problem. We have to unlearn a lot of things together in order to move forward." The Sugars Recommend “I Stand Here Ironing,” by Tillie Olsen “The Yellow Wallpaper,” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
In this episode of Green Room, Sydney and Chloe interview Jed Hartley. He shares about his family's close involvement with Mike Bickle and IHOPKC, his father's problematic prophetic ministry, and the impact it has all had on his faith. They talk about the lack of accountability in the IHOP community, the pressure of being a pastor's kid, and the emotional toll of realizing the deception within the religious organization.
Roland H. Hartley was a prominent politician and lumberman who was elected mayor of Everett in 1910–1911, served as a member of the Washington State House of Representatives in 1915–1916, and then as the 10th governor of the State of Washington from 1925–1933. Despite his small frame, he was a political showman and a fiery orator whose colorful words were frequently removed from the official record. His fight to remove what he called waste and luxury in government characterized his political career as a conservative Republican. He regularly exploited his veto power to impose his political agenda and detested taxation, government spending, and unions. He fought with the majority of his elected colleagues on labor, education, and the lumber business during his two turbulent terms as governor.Listen now to learn more about this lumber baron turned State Governor! This episode is part of the ongoing monthly series highlighting Evergreen State Governors

U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Lee Hartley, the assistant adjutant general for the Tennessee Air National Guard, delivers a message to airmen at the 118th Wing in Nashville, TN, on April 5, 2025. The purpose of his visit was to reinforce embracing the warrior ethos mindset as we continue to collaborate, not only domestically, but on the international level, to defend our homeland. Wearing MOPP (Mission-Oriented Protective Posture) gear as the symbol of the Tennessee Air National Guard's commitment to camaraderie, purpose, and the mission set that defines who we are, Hartley said that “we need to be exceptional at adapting fast … we need to be pretty good at going places and figuring it out quickly.” Upholding high standards of excellence to ensure mission success is what drives our ability to pivot and execute. “In our culture, what we encourage when we talk about the expeditionary mindset is commander's intent, and you solve it”, he continues. “We are really good at that.” In an era of increased global volatility and emerging threats, deterrence, readiness and the need to remain agile is paramount. “I have yet to see a top-down solution that will beat grassroots effort when it comes to solving a problem”, he said. “Our airmen are empowered to come up with solutions to the problems they have. All the attention to details and standards that go along with this goes a long way.” Hartley's message resonated with airmen, reinforcing our core values to push us to succeed in future operations. In short: Wherever the mission, we're always prepared to face it - no matter the environment. (U.S. Air National Guard video by Staff Sgt. Yonette)
